Review Of Red State Religion: Faith And Politics In America's Heartland By Robert Wuthnow, James E. Sherow
Review Of Red State Religion: Faith And Politics In America's Heartland By Robert Wuthnow, James E. Sherow
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Robert Wuthnow, who directs the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University, has a distinguished publishing record in the field of American religion and culture. A Kansas native, he has an unmistakable soft spot for the state. He opposes Thomas Frank's view that Kansans have consistently espoused Republican-centered moral issues at odds with their economic well-being. His central argument, as he clearly states, is that the "Republican Party and the centrist conservatism of the state's two dominant religions-Methodism and Catholicism- actually deterred radical religious and political movements from gaining much ground during most of the state's history." He …

Relative Abundance Of Northern Flying Squireels And Red Squireels In Different Forest Types, Black Hills, South Dakota, Melissa Hough, Charles D. Dieter
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) and red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) in the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF) of South Dakota represent isolated populations. Because data on both species in the region are limited, and because the northern flying squirrel in South Dakota and the Black Hills National Forest has species of concern status, we trapped throughout BHNF to determine relative abundance in different forest types for both populations. For northern flying squirrels, capture rate was higher in the northern and western hills compared to the southern and eastern hills, whereas for red squirrels, capture rate was …

Family stories are told and retold, evolving over time with new details and other layers. One story merges with the next, while photographic images, oral and written accounts dissolve into the fabric of memory, building the family narrative. Both individual and collective, these histories continue to grow and transform as a new language is created, one that is visual, written, spoken and unspoken. As the complexities develop, the impact of these stories on our lives and the need to make sense of them in relation to our own identities increases. Yet, as I wade through my own family’s tales, the …
A Mixed Methods Approach To Evaluate Kidquest, A Traditional Classroom Obesity Prevention Intervention, In An Afterschool Program: A Pilot Study, Amy M. Wehbe
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Over 1.4 million middle school adolescents participate in afterschool programs each year. While most of the obesity prevention interventions focus on the traditional school day, the afterschool setting should not be overlooked. A pilot study was conducted using KidQuest, a traditional classroom nutrition and physical activity intervention for early adolescents ages 10 to 12 based on the social cognitive theory, in an afterschool setting. The purpose of the pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using a nutrition and physical activity intervention developed for the traditional school day in an afterschool setting. The desired outcome of this mixed-methods study …

Review Of The Negative Influences Of Non-Native Salmonids On Native Fish Species, Kelly C. Turek, Mark A. Pegg, Kevin L. Pope
Review Of The Negative Influences Of Non-Native Salmonids On Native Fish Species, Kelly C. Turek, Mark A. Pegg, Kevin L. Pope
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Non-native salmonids are often introduced into areas containing species of concern, yet a comprehensive overview of the short- and long-term consequences of these introductions is lacking in the Great Plains. Several authors have suggested that non-native salmonids negatively influence species of concern. The objective of this paper is to review known interactions between non-native salmonids and native fishes, with a focus on native species of concern. After an extensive search of the literature, it appears that in many cases non-native salmonids do negatively influence species of concern (e.g., reduce abundance and alter behavior) via different mechanisms (e.g., predation and competition). …

Aquatic Invertebrate Community Structure In The Niobrara River, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska, 1996-2009, David E. Bowles, David G. Peitz, J. Tyler Cribbs
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Aquatic invertebrates were sampled annually in the Niobrara River, Nebraska, during the period 1996-2009 using Hester-Dendy multiplate samplers. Collections indicated the invertebrate community in the river has shifted from one dominated by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) taxa to one dominated by Chironomidae and Amphipoda. Generally, EPT richness and percentage abundance of EPT of the total community, as well as percentage abundance of Heptageniidae and Leptophlebiidae, has declined across the years. During that same period, percentage abundance of Amphipoda and Chironomidae, taxa evenness, Shannon's Index, and the Hilsenhoff Biotic Index have increased. Stream discharge decreased significantly during the 15-year period …
Taking The Measure Of A Mark: Exploratory Size And Shape Analysis Of Cut Marks, Eileen Johnson, Patrick J. Lewis, Leland C. Bement
Taking The Measure Of A Mark: Exploratory Size And Shape Analysis Of Cut Marks, Eileen Johnson, Patrick J. Lewis, Leland C. Bement
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
A database of 128 measured incised butchery marks (i.e., the classic cut mark) was the basis for exploratory statistical tests of length and width measurements from late Pleistocene mammoth localities and an early Holocene bison locality. The tests reveal several trends. The initial approach uses univariate descriptive statistics, regression, and ANOVA to examine differences in size and shape of marks. Significant differences are noted in length and width of marks based on location, element, and type. Length and width variables demonstrate low variability within incised marks. Results demonstrate a consistency in incised marks across the two taxa. Other consistencies are …
Review Of Inequity In The Technopolis: Race, Class, Gender, And The Digital Divide In Austin Edited By Joseph Straubhaar, Jeremiah Spence, Zeynep Thfekci, And Roberta G. Lentz, Anthony M. Orum
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Austin, Texas, by most accounts, is one of the most attractive cities in America. It is said by many people and magazines to be one of the best cities in which to live. Outside of Silicon Valley, it possesses some of the best high-tech companies and the most generous investors in high technology. Young people from across the country attend the University of Texas at Austin- and few of them ever seem to leave. It has become the Urbantopia of our age, the model for the new "creative economy."
But is it? How much of what we know about Austin …
Review Of Community And Frontier: A Ukrainian Settlement In Thecanadian Parkland By John C. Lehr, Jim Mochoruk
Review Of Community And Frontier: A Ukrainian Settlement In Thecanadian Parkland By John C. Lehr, Jim Mochoruk
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
At first glance this slender volume appears to be nothing more than a study of one small and seemingly insignificant Ukrainian Canadian settlement located in the harsh bush country of southeastern Manitoba. Appearances can be deceiving. While Community and Frontier is most assuredly a case study, it is a brilliant little work-a true gem-that sparkles with intellectual vitality as it broadens our understanding of the entire Ukrainian Canadian experience, particularly in the pioneer phase.

Review Of Green Illusions: The Dirty Secrets Of Clean Energy And The Future Of Environmentalism By Ozzie Zehner, Jonathan Hladik
Review Of Green Illusions: The Dirty Secrets Of Clean Energy And The Future Of Environmentalism By Ozzie Zehner, Jonathan Hladik
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
As we grapple with climate change and pollution, resource scarcity and rising prices, it's clear we need to make difficult choices about our energy consumption. In the opinion of many, the solution begins and ends with increased investment in renewable energy systems, an investment that will help us cut back on emissions and lower prices-while creating economic opportunity here at home. Ozzie Zehner doesn't share that opinion. His critique of modem American environmentalism in Green Illusions maintains that many of us could be wrong.
Zehner begins by addressing the seductive nature of renewable energy systems, dissecting popularly circulated solutions, and …

Review By Aboriginal Peoples In Canadian Cities: Transformations And Continuities Edited By Heather A. Howard And Craig Proulx, Bonita Lawrence
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In some respects, this comprehensive anthology represents the cutting edge in a growing field of study related to urban Aboriginal communities in Canada. With a focus ranging from Toronto to Vancouver, the book contains fascinating new studies, including the experiences of Aboriginal employees at Ontario's Casino Rama, the rebuilding of Papaschase First Nation in Edmonton, and how Plains culture has been adopted as a form of healing in Vancouver. While the authors acknowledge the absence of voices addressing the Atlantic provinces and Quebec, this is offset by the strength of offerings from the Prairies, which include a textual analysis of …
Review Of Fishes Of The Central United States By Joseph R. Tomelleri And Mark E. Eberle., Timothy H. Bonner
Review Of Fishes Of The Central United States By Joseph R. Tomelleri And Mark E. Eberle., Timothy H. Bonner
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The second, enlarged edition is a timely and necessary revision of the comfortable first edition classic. Tomelleri and Eberle remain true to their initial intent of providing accurate yet readable species accounts and detailed illustrations of Great Plains fishes. Format and style are especially suited for nontechnical audiences (anglers, naturalists, fish enthusiasts), whereas detailed life history accounts, summaries of conservation threats, and an extensive bibliography serve as handy references for natural resource managers and researchers.
Upon first review, the "Revised and Expanded" label may seem suspect: this second edition has 34 fewer total pages. However, revision of taxonomy and addition …

1. The biological structure of arctic lakes is changing rapidly, apparently in response to global change processes such as increasing air temperatures, although altered nutrient stoichiometry may also be an important driver. Equally important, however, are local factors (e.g. landscape setting, hydrological linkages and trophic interactions) that may mediate responses of individual lakes at the regional scale. Despite general acknowledgement of the importance of local factors, there has been little focus on among-lake variability in the response to environmental change.

Black bears (Ursus americanus) are hosts for two important zoonotic parasites, Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp. and bears are hunted for human consumption in the USA. Little is known of the genetic diversity of T. gondii circulating in wildlife. In the present study, antibodies to T. gondii were found in juice from tongues of 17 (25.7%) of 66 wild black bear from Maryland during the hunting season of 2010 and 2011. Antibodies to T. gondii were assessed by the modified agglutination test. Tongues of 17 seropositive bears were bioassayed in mice and viable T. gondii was isolated from three samples. …

Proximal Sensing As A Means Of Characterizing Phragmites Australis, Travis Yeik
Proximal Sensing As A Means Of Characterizing Phragmites Australis, Travis Yeik
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Phragmites australis is an invasive wetland weed found throughout much of the United States. Documenting and mapping the growth and spread of this emergent macrophyte can be an important step in developing and implementing successful management strategies. Characterizing the phenology of a vegetation species with a sensor capable of hyperspectral resolution, positioned at close proximity to the canopy of interest, is often a first step necessary for understanding the basic species-specific reflectance patterns, and for quantifying the manner in which light interacts with the plants comprising particular communities. Spectral data over a P. australis canopy were collected during 22 …

The Importance Of Spring And Autumn Atmospheric Conditions For The Evaporation Regime Of Lake Superior, Christopher Spence, P.D. Blanken, John D. Lenters, N. Hedstrom
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Feedbacks between ice extent and evaporation have long been suspected to be important for Lake Superior evaporation because it is during autumn and winter when latent heat fluxes are highest. Recent direct measurements of evaporation made at the Stannard Rock Lighthouse have provided new information on the physical controls on Lake Superior evaporation, in particular that evaporation can react within hours to days to a change in synoptic conditions. However, the large heat capacity of the lake creates a strong seasonal cycle of energy storage and release. There is a complex interaction among heat storage, evaporation, and ice cover that …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Soil temperature can exhibit considerable memory from weather and climate signals and is among the most important initial conditions in numerical weather and climate models. Consequently, a more accurate long term land surface soil temperature dataset is needed to improve weather and climate simulation and prediction, and is also important for the simulation of agricultural crop yield and ecological processes. The North American Land Data Assimilation phase 2 (NLDAS-2) has generated 31 years (1979–2009) of simulated hourly soil temperature data with a spatial resolution of 1/8°. This dataset has not been comprehensively evaluated to date. Thus, the purpose of this …

Assessing Migration Of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus Colubris) At Broad Spatial And Temporal Scales Evaluación De La Migración De Archilochus Colubris A Escalas Amplias De Tiempo Y Espacio, Jason Courter, Ron J. Johnson, William C. Bridges Jr., Kenneth Hubbard
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Phenological patterns in birds appear to be temperature-dependent in part, and global temperatures are undergoing change. Many studies of bird phenology are conducted at broad temporal but local spatial scales, making it difficult to assess how temperature affects bird migration across landscapes. Recently, networks of “citizen science” volunteers have emerged whose collective efforts may improve phenology studies as biases associated with such efforts are recognized and addressed. We compared mean Rubythroated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) first arrival dates from Journey North (2001-2010) with data from the North American Bird Phenology Program (1880-1969). Ruby-throated Hummingbirds arrived earlier in the more recent period …

Southeast Asia (SEA) hosts one of the most complex aerosol systems in the world, with convoluted meteorological scales, sharp geographic and socioeconomic features, high biological productivity, mixtures of a wide range of atmospheric pollutants, and likely a significant susceptibility to global climate change. This physical complexity of SEA is coupled with one of the world's most challenging environments for both in situ and remote sensing observation. The 7-Southeast Asian Studies (7SEAS) program was formed to facilitate interdisciplinary research into the integrated SEA aerosol environment via grass roots style collaboration. In support of the early 7SEAS program and the affiliated Southeast …
