Biological Assessment For Maintenance Of Bank Stabilization Structures Missouri National Recreation River Gavins Point Dam To Ponca State Park, Nebraska Jan 1994

Biological Assessment For Maintenance Of Bank Stabilization Structures Missouri National Recreation River Gavins Point Dam To Ponca State Park, Nebraska

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The location of the proposed maintenance construction project discussed in this document is located between Gavins Point Dam, South Dakota and Ponca, Nebraska, at specific locations as listed in the accompanying plans and specifications.

The proposed construction consists only of maintaining those structures that can reasonably be repaired to alleviate erosion problems for the purpose of maintaining the structural integrity of the existing structures. Any structure that is beyond repair would not be reconstructed, since it would no longer qualify as maintenance. There are nine existing projects within the Missouri National Recreation River (MNRR) segment of the Missouri River. Each …

Dietary Comparisons Of Adult Male Common Grackles, Red-Winged Blackbirds, And Yellow-Headed Blackbirds In North Central North Dakota, H. Jeffrey Homan, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier, Robert B. Carlson Jan 1994

Dietary Comparisons Of Adult Male Common Grackles, Red-Winged Blackbirds, And Yellow-Headed Blackbirds In North Central North Dakota, H. Jeffrey Homan, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier, Robert B. Carlson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We compared the esophageal contents of adult male common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula), red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus),and yellow-headed blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus) collected in north central North Dakota from July through October 1989. Temporal variation in the diets of all species was related to food availabilities, which were heavily influenced by crop phenology. Depending on species, mean percent dry weight of sunflower achenes during August increased 2-6 times over July. Yellow-headed blackbirds migrated from north central North Dakota by early September, but substantial numbers of common grackles and red-winged blackbirds remained until mid-October. Sunflower was an …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Sections 307 and 309 of the 1988 Indoor Radon Abatement Act (IRAA) direct EPA to identify areas of the United States that have the potential to produce elevated levels of radon. EPA, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the Association of, American State Geologists (AASG) have worked closely over the past several years to produce a series of maps and documents which address these directives. The EPA Map of Radon Zones is a compilation of that work and fulfills the requirements of sections 307 and 309 of IRAA. The Map of Radon Zones identifies, on a county-by-county basis, areas of …

The Conservation Reserve Program: Habitat For Grassland Birds, Douglas H. Johnson, Michael D. Schwartz Aug 1993

The Conservation Reserve Program: Habitat For Grassland Birds, Douglas H. Johnson, Michael D. Schwartz

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has effected major changes to the landscape, especially in the northern Great Plains. Breeding birds have responded dramatically to habitat changes by colonizing CRP fields, often in large numbers. The vegetation in most CRP fields consists of introduced grasses and legumes, along with a variety of weedy species. This paper describes the bird populations found during three years of surveys on more than 300 CRP fields in western Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and eastern Montana. We relate densities of selected species to geographic location, annual effects, conservation practice adopted, and vegetation features.

The Value On An Interdisciplinary Environmental Awareness: An Introduction, J. Allen Williams Jr. Aug 1993

The Value On An Interdisciplinary Environmental Awareness: An Introduction, J. Allen Williams Jr.

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This special issue of Great Plains Research brings together important and innovative environmentally-related research being conducted in what might be considered an "ecoregion," the Great Plains. Investigators from seven different disciplines explore topics that span the Great Plains from the southern border of Texas to the Canadian prairie provinces of Alberta and Manitoba. Their methods vary from highly focused experimental designs to broad-based policy analysis.

A review of the research topics covered in this issue might suggest they are as varied as the geographic locations, disciplinary affiliations, and methodological approaches of the researchers. In one sense, they are, but the …

Under An Open Sky: Rethinking America'swestern Past. William Cronon,, John R. Wunder

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Environmental studies is a growing field that brings new knowledge almost every day and certainly with every press's new listings. Many Western social scientists are attracted to it as a means of explicating the past, present, and future of North America. It is not new to Western historians. James C. Malin and Walter Prescott Webb were two pathfinders in studies of the environment over five to seven decades ago, but ecological impacts on human actions were somewhat forgotten by historians in the interim. During the past fifteen years environmental history has become a staple in studies of the American West. …

Asymmetric Trends Of Daily Maximum And Minimum Temperature, Thomas R. Karl, Philip D. Jones, Richard W. Knight, George Kukla, Neil Plummer, Vyacheslav Razuvayev, Kevin P. Gallo, Janette Lindseay, Robert J. Charlson, Thomas C. Peterson Jan 1993

Asymmetric Trends Of Daily Maximum And Minimum Temperature, Thomas R. Karl, Philip D. Jones, Richard W. Knight, George Kukla, Neil Plummer, Vyacheslav Razuvayev, Kevin P. Gallo, Janette Lindseay, Robert J. Charlson, Thomas C. Peterson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Monthly mean maximum and minimum temperatures for over 50% (10%) of the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere landmass, accounting for 37% of the global landmass, indicate that the rise of the minimum temperature has occurred at a rate three times that of the maximum temperature during the period 1951-90 (0.84°C versus 0.28°C). The decrease of the diumal temperature range is approximately equal to the increase of mean temperature. The asymmetry is detectable in all seasons and in most of the regions studied.

Field Manual For The Identification Of Selected North American Freshwater Fish By Fillets And Scales, David W. Oates, Lisa M. Krings, Karen L. Ditz

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

This manual is designed for use in the field to help conservation officers identify fish that have been filleted or skinned. Many North American freshwater gamefish and those caught by commercial fishermen are included. Our goal was to collect six fish of each species for measurement purposes. Several states and provinces including Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Washington D.C., Wisconsin and Wyoming furnished samples. Fish may vary from location to location; these differences were not corrected for in this manual.

For identification of fish, we will first examine fillets. Fish …

Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, Sarah Carter

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The essays in this innovative and significant book look at the effects of European occupation on the people and the environment of semiarid regions on several continents. It is the book's comparative and interdisciplinary approach that makes it particularly original and provocative. Included are the lands of the indigenous people of the North American Plains, the Australian Aborigines, the Kazakhs of what was once the USSR, the Maasai of Kenya, several groups in South Africa, Alaskan, and Lapp (Saami) people. Contributors are from anthropology, economics, English, law, history, religion, Native American studies, and environmental studies and they are John W. …

Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, By Paul A. Olson, Adolph M. Greenberg Feb 1991

Review Of The Struggle For The Land: Indigenous Insight And Industrial Empire In The Semiarid World, By Paul A. Olson, Adolph M. Greenberg

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book is based on the premise that solutions to the problems experienced by many resource management programs currently underway in the semiarid regions of the world can be found in indigenous systems of resource use. Developing out of a 1986 interdisciplinary symposium sponsored by the Center for Great Plains Studies, the book has contributors from agricultural development, anthropology, economics, English, environmental studies, history, law, native studies, and philosophy. Given the magnitude of the human and environmental problems in semiarid lands, a book intended to provide an indigenous counterpoint, as it were, to present use of those areas would not …

Review Of Agricultural Bioethics: Implications Of Agricultural Biotechnology, Steven M. Gendel, A. David Kline, D. Michael Warren, And Faye Yates, Eds., Vernon W. Ruttan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This book is largely the product of a series of faculty discussions and a symposium held at Iowa State University in 1987. It represents a comprehensive treatment of the safety and regulatory issues, economic prospects, social considerations, and ethical dilemmas emerging from advances in molecular biology and agricultural biotechnology. Major attention is focused on bovine growth hormone bGH). The book is the most useful introduction to these issues available under one cover. It is also a book of highly uneven quality. The papers range from advocacy journalism to carefully reasoned argument and rigorous sifting of evidence. I particularly recommend the …

Hydroclimatic Variability On The Great Plains, Michael J. Keables Feb 1991

Hydroclimatic Variability On The Great Plains, Michael J. Keables

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This study identifies the spatial variability of the hydroclimatology of the Great Plains. Spatial associations of monthly midtropospheric circulation anomalies, total precipitation, and mean stream discharge are identified using an unrotated principal component analysis. Three hydroclimatic associations, representing synoptic circulation features and associated precipitation and stream discharge patterns, identify specific circulation anomalies and corresponding spatial pattems of surface hydrology in the northern, central, and southern Great Plains. Results indicate that nearly 47% of the hydrologic (precipitation and stream discharge) variability during summer is attributed to synoptic-scale midtropospheric circulation anomalies, with sub-synoptic convectional processes accounting for approximately 42% of the hydrologic …

United Conservation Alliance, Laurence R. Jahn

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)

We gather here and reflect on successes in wildlife conservation, restoration, and management; and make plans for more beneficial actions. Significant achievements have been madein public education and wildlife management, as shown by increases in some wildlife populations. But a continuing pressing challenge involves responding to some wildlife population declines, as well as wildlife damage and nuisance situations, as the human population increases and dominates the landscape.

As you well know, management successes involve imagination and dedication of people, such as those gathered here. Your efforts play an important role in helping to manage wildlife, and provide associated outdoor recreational …

The Human Element In Wildlife Damage Situations, Ron J. Johnson Mar 1990

The Human Element In Wildlife Damage Situations, Ron J. Johnson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)

The field of prevention and control of wildlife damage is changing and evolving along with clientele needs, pressures from user and non-user groups, and other factors. A theoretical overview of the field may offer an action model regarding changing trends and potential responses. I propose that three things happen every time a wildlife damage problem occurs: 1) A human activity, desire, or need is interfered with, 2) the experience fosters an opinion about a wild animal - usually negative, and 3) a decision is made to tolerate the situation or to control it. If control is selected, availability and effectiveness …

The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1990

The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought affects more people than any other hazard, in both developed and developing countries, yet few governments have taken steps to prepare for it. This situation stems partly from the complex nature of drought, which affects various sectors of society in different ways, and partly from an inability or unwillingness of governments to accept drought as a normal part of climate, not as an extreme random event. Scientific and policy communities have become increasingly concerned about the inability of governments to respond to drought in an effective and timely manner, and some have called for improved drought planning and management. …

Identification Of Solubility-Controlling Solid Phases In A Large Fly Ash Field Lysimeter, Jonathan S. Fruchter, Dhanpat Rai, John M. Zachara Jan 1990

Identification Of Solubility-Controlling Solid Phases In A Large Fly Ash Field Lysimeter, Jonathan S. Fruchter, Dhanpat Rai, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Samples of pore fluids and leachates were obtained from a large fly ash field lysimeter in central Pennsylvania. The fly ash in the lysimeter was usually only partially saturated, and only 0.3 pore volumes of water leached through the lysimeter during the 3-year study period. The samples were analyzed for major and trace inorganic anions and cations. The resulting analyses were modeled by using an equilibrium speciation/solubility code to test the hypothesis that the solubilities of at least some species in the fly ash leachate were controlled by solid phases. Potential solubility-controlling solids were identified for Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, …
