Key findings
● State and federal policies targeting divisive concepts or DEI are shaping research agendas at scale and across disciplines. Twenty percent of all respondents, and 29 percent of researchers working in states with divisive concepts or similar laws, reported having avoided certain research topics because of state laws and policies.
● Eight percent of respondents representing a wide range of disciplines reported having had a federal grant cancelled in 2025.
● Eleven percent of respondents reported that federal and state policies restricting research activities are compelling them to seek employment out of state, to leave the academy, or …
Costa Rican Oboe Music By Mario Alfagüell: A Performance Guide, Ruth Moreno Calderon
Costa Rican Oboe Music By Mario Alfagüell: A Performance Guide, Ruth Moreno Calderon
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
It was not until 1972 that the modern oboe achieved a formally established professional presence in Costa Rica. This does not suggest that the instrument was absent from the country prior to this date; rather, its professional consolidation occurred with the arrival of two foreign oboists (Claudio Bondy and David Busch) and whose activities marked the beginning of systematic performance, pedagogy, and institutional continuity. As a result, the professional history of the oboe in Costa Rica has been established for only a few decades.
A central challenge is the limited size of the Costa Rican oboe repertoire and the absence …
Inclusive Special Education: Changing Mindsets And Practices To Improve Student Achievement, Nicole S. Pechous
Inclusive Special Education: Changing Mindsets And Practices To Improve Student Achievement, Nicole S. Pechous
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Decades after federal mandates for special education services, students with disabilities (SWD) continue to lag significantly behind their peers in academic achievement and post–school outcomes. This quantitative study explores how the inclusive mindsets and collaborative practices of general and special education teachers from a medium–sized, suburban Midwestern district improved after participating in a year-long training series on inclusive practices. The study also explores the impact of increased inclusive mindsets and practices on student reading achievement, particularly for students with disabilities. Using a quantitative design, changes in inclusive mindsets and practices for participating teachers were analyzed. Findings indicated that participation in …

The Effect Of Cerebral Somatosensory Network Priming On Language Function In Chronic L-Mca Ischemic Stroke: A Companion Case Study, Mandelin E. Wollesen
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Chronic aphasia following a left middle cerebral artery (L-MCA) stroke is often associated with limited recovery beyond the acute phase, necessitating interventions that target neuroplastic mechanisms. This study examined the effects of somatosensory pneumotactile stimulation paired with cognitive-linguistic tasks on functional language performance in an individual with chronic aphasia. Using a single-subject pre-post design, the participant completed a 10-week intervention protocol involving repeated pneumotactile stimulation via the GALILEO system combined with language and motor tasks. Outcomes were assessed using standardized measures, discourse-based language samples, oral reading, repetition, and phonemic verbal fluency. Discourse was analyzed using Correct Information Units (CIUs), words …

Effects Of Ndbi With Just-In-Time Programming Of Vsds On Communication Of Children With Asd, Jenna M. Rogers
Effects Of Ndbi With Just-In-Time Programming Of Vsds On Communication Of Children With Asd, Jenna M. Rogers
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a prominent neurological and developmental disability that often requires communication support, such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Visual Scene Displays (VSDs) are an AAC support that directly immerses in the user’s life, using images from real environments the user has or may experience. Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) is an evidence-based approach to early intervention that targets social communication during naturalistic routines, including those who rely on AAC support to communicate. Despite recent research indicating that combining NDBI and AAC is a promising approach (Pope et al., 2024), no studies to date have examined …
Exploratory Evaluation Of Handler Performance And Processing-Related Outcomes During Cattle Handling, Morgan Marquardt
Exploratory Evaluation Of Handler Performance And Processing-Related Outcomes During Cattle Handling, Morgan Marquardt
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Animals have several critical roles in society, including the production of food and fiber, and companionship. Contact with animals has been shown to benefit human physical and mental health, yet little research has investigated the impact that humans have on animals. Handler skill may considerably affect the extent to which humans influence animal health and wellbeing, and this may be a critical consideration for animal agriculture. Objective assessment of cattle handler skill has received limited attention in the scientific literature, despite its importance to human safety and animal welfare. When compared to less skilled handlers, highly skilled cattle handlers may …
Rhetorical Violence: The Rhetorics Of Women's Counter Political Violence, Kylie Rowland
Rhetorical Violence: The Rhetorics Of Women's Counter Political Violence, Kylie Rowland
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Protest is omnipresent, and yet not much is known about the efficacy and impacts of its different rhetorical strategies—particularly so for marginalized populations, whose available means of protest are already limited by both material realities and assumptions that govern who and what can make waves. This bind is further exacerbated by gendered and racialized civility politics that determine which bodies can be disruptive and which already are considered “violent.” To address this gap, I turn toward the under-researched rhetorical potentials of marginalized people’s—specifically women and queer folks’—use of symbolic protest “violence,” which works to strategically make evident the larger ongoing …

Dirges Of Hope, Manasseh Azure Awuni
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Among the varied themes that African fiction explores, politics and governance remain the most dominant across generations. Writing under oppressive and exploitative colonial administrations, the first generation of African storytellers used fiction to highlight the injustice of colonial rule. With fidelity to the African proverb that says the tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter until the lion learns to tell its own stories, African writers also used fiction to push back against one-sided, toxic narratives about the continent. After independence, when rulers of the new republics continued the colonial legacies of oppression, inflicting untold hardships on their citizens, …

Let Them All Grow: Protecting Nebraska's Intersex Youth From Medical Intervention, Jori Peters
Let Them All Grow: Protecting Nebraska's Intersex Youth From Medical Intervention, Jori Peters
Nebraska Law Review
The Nebraska Legislature passed the Let Them Grow Act on May 22, 2023, which prohibits minors from receiving gender-affirming care in Nebraska. This Note argues that the Act violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because it exempts intersex children—those born with ambiguous sex characteristics—from protections against unnecessary, irreversible, and nonconsensual medical procedures, while the Act protects those born with clearly male and female sex characteristics. This Note clarifies the distinction between the issues faced by intersex individuals and transgender individuals, and highlights the psychological and physical harms of early sex assignment surgeries. Further, this Note outlines the …
Carson V. Makin: Ending The Status-Use Distinction And Building A Foundation For The Emergence Of Catholic Charter Schools, Tyler Lyon
Nebraska Law Review
Over the course of its history, the United States has wrestled with a wide variety of issues that have tested the tension between the Establishment and Free Exercise clauses of the First Amendment. One such issue involves the extent to which religious schools can access public funds, which was addressed by the proposal of the Blaine Amendment on a national scale in 1875. The Blaine Amendment was intended to prevent religious groups from accessing public funds, and although it did not pass on a national level, it was adopted by many states.
However, some recent United States Supreme Court cases …
On Sovereignty, Outer Space, And Taxation, Erika I. Scuderi
On Sovereignty, Outer Space, And Taxation, Erika I. Scuderi
Nebraska Law Review
This Article offers a comprehensive framework for States’ taxing powers in outer space. Beginning with an analysis of the legal status of airspace and outer space, the study addresses the taxation of commercial space activities, where traditional fiscal approaches of residence-based and source-based taxation break down. The discussion ultimately centers on Article VIII of the Outer Space Treaty, on which basis the present Article proposes the “Tax Jurisdiction by Registration Principle,” arguing that the act of registering a space object provides a legal basis for taxing income derived from its use. In doing so, the Article provides for a potential …
Leveling The Playing Field: Which Type Of Political Gender Quota Most Effectively Increases Women's Legislative Representation?, Meghan K. Stone
Leveling The Playing Field: Which Type Of Political Gender Quota Most Effectively Increases Women's Legislative Representation?, Meghan K. Stone
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Significant advances have been made in recent years in terms of increasing the representation of women in national legislatures around the world. Many scholars believe political gender quota laws are responsible for this increase. However, it is important to note that there are several different types of political gender quota laws, each with differing mechanisms for increasing the presence of women within the legislature. This paper researched the effectiveness of three different systems of political gender quotas (voluntary political party quotas, legislated candidate quotas, and the hybrid system of quotas) in increasing the percentage of women represented within national legislatures …

Three Butterfly Genera Across The Central Texas Suture Zone, Qian Cong, Jing Zhang, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
Genome-scale analyses of butterfly specimens across the Central Texas Suture Zone revealed that several taxa currently treated as subspecies exhibit genomic differentiation similar to that observed between species. Further investigation and genomic sequencing of additional specimens from across the ranges of these taxa support this conclusion and result in the following changes to nomenclature and taxonomy. Two new subspecies of Nymphalidae Rafinesque, 1815 are described: Asterocampa louisa monterra Grishin, ssp. n. (type locality in Mexico: Nuevo León) and Asterocampa clyton plana Grishin, ssp. n. (type locality in USA: Texas, Denton Co.). The following taxa are recognized as species, not subspecies: …
Spatial Variability Of Nitrates And Nitrogen Mineralization Kinetics And Their Effects In Long-Term Tillage Systems, Bibash Rokaya
Spatial Variability Of Nitrates And Nitrogen Mineralization Kinetics And Their Effects In Long-Term Tillage Systems, Bibash Rokaya
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nitrogen (N) and water management are essential for water quality protection and crop production. However, soil N and water are spatiotemporally variable. Soil water spatial dependencies are described in the literature with known associations with preferential flows among other factors. In contrast, a knowledge gap exists on the spatial dependence of soil N mineralization kinetics. We hypothesize that soil N mineralization kinetics and soil water have distinct and cross-correlated spatial characteristics among soil management practices and climatic regions. For the field study, we measured soil-N mineralization kinetics, volumetric water content (VWC), and a suite of soil properties along ~70 m …

Principle Over Pedigree: United States V. Rahimi, Post-Ratification History, And The Case For Justice Barrett’S Approach, Joel Myers
Nebraska Law Review
Four years ago, the Supreme Court revolutionized Second Amendment law in New York Rifle & Pistol Ass’n, Inc. v. Bruen by instituting a test concentrated on text, history, and tradition. To uphold a firearm regulation, the government must demonstrate a relevantly similar historical analogue. Shortly after, the Court affirmed but clarified its position in United States v. Rahimi by performing the Bruen analysis at a higher level of generality and rejecting a challenge to 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(8). The Court’s evolving Second Amendment jurisprudence offers fertile ground for the Court’s originalists to elucidate their perception of constitutional interpretation. In Rahimi, Justice …

Chapter 4: The Grid Patterns In The Vestments And Headdresses Of Female Statuary From The Classic Period Cultures Of Central Veracruz, Chantal D. Huckert
Precious Pattern: The Dotted-Diamond Motif in Indigenous American Textiles, Explorations in Mesoamerica, the American Southwest, and the Andes
This chapter focuses on grid designs appearing on female clothing in Late Postclassic Nahua sources, in Maya sources, and on the Late Classic figurines of Central Veracruz. This study examines cross-hatched lattice patterns based on repetitions of rhombus and quincunx motifs associated with the sentient Mesoamerican Earth complex. The attached catalog presents a clear reference to these motifs and their variants, while the rest of the chapter is divided into two sections and addresses the general cross-hatched lattice pattern and the associated motifs. The first section discusses the all-over grid design, dotted or not, on the clothing of Mexican highland …

Unsettling The West: Migration Routes And Homesteading Through Oral Histories, Sidney Wickham
Unsettling The West: Migration Routes And Homesteading Through Oral Histories, Sidney Wickham
Nebraska Anthropologist
Westward expansion in the nineteenth-century United States has long been framed through settler-centered historical narratives that emphasize progress and national development. This article employs oral history as an ethnographic method to examine migration routes and homesteading experiences in Nebraska and the broader Midwest, foregrounding how memory, storytelling, and lived experience function as cultural practices. Drawing on interviews with descendants of homesteaders, community members, and museum professionals, alongside diaries, newspapers, and archival materials, this study analyzes how migration was remembered, narrated, and transmitted across generations. Rather than treating overland trails and homesteads as singular pathways of movement, this research situates them …
A Semiotic Analysis Of German-American Cultural Suppression In The Lincoln Freie Presse From 1914 To 1918, Elle Ward
Nebraska Anthropologist
This study performs a historical semiotic content analysis of the Lincoln Freie Presse to document the processes of cultural coercion and resultant identity erasure within the German- American press of Nebraska during the critical period of January 1914 to December 1918. The research establishes a semiotic baseline (1914–1916) characterized by high linguistic and content autonomy and then tracks the immediate, stark shifts following the U.S. entry into World War I (the coercion period) and the succeeding mass anti-German hysteria (1917–1918). Quantitative findings convey a rapid and overwhelming visual conquest of the newspaper’s spatio-textual landscape: patriotic symbolism surged from zero to …
