Nebraska Dog 4-H Learning Resources: Assessing Youth Opinions And Determining Focus Of Future Curriculum Development Efforts, Tressa Reiner
Nebraska Dog 4-H Learning Resources: Assessing Youth Opinions And Determining Focus Of Future Curriculum Development Efforts, Tressa Reiner
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The optimal method of teaching participants in the Nebraska Dog 4-H program has historically been a club led by an adult volunteer. However, participants in the program, particularly those 4-Hers without a club in their area, may benefit from additional learning resources such as online how to videos or short hands-on workshops. Online resources have been shown to be helpful in other extension related activities. In order to gain an understanding of Nebraska Dog 4-Hers’ current knowledge of existing resources and their opinions of current and potential future resources, a survey was sent to all 4-Hers enrolled in the Nebraska …
Using Infrared Radiometry Thermometer For Irrigation Management Of Dry Edible Beans In Western Nebraska, Isabella Presotto Possignolo
Using Infrared Radiometry Thermometer For Irrigation Management Of Dry Edible Beans In Western Nebraska, Isabella Presotto Possignolo
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Proper irrigation management requires farmers to determine the right timing and amount to irrigate. Soil water sensors are one of the most popular sensor-based approach used by farmers to decide when and how much to irrigate. However, installation and retrieval of soil water sensors require excavation of soil and can be challenging. Other than soil water sensors, there are plant-based water stress monitoring technologies that are less soil disturbing such as infrared radiometry thermometer (IRT). Using canopy temperature measured from IRT, researchers can calculate thermal-based indices such as crop water stress index (CWSI) for many crops around the world. Yet …
Exploring Pedagogical Empathy Of Mathematics Graduate Student Instructors, Karina Uhing
Exploring Pedagogical Empathy Of Mathematics Graduate Student Instructors, Karina Uhing
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Interpersonal relationships are central to the teaching and learning of mathematics. One way that teachers relate to their students is by empathizing with them. In this study, I examined the phenomenon of pedagogical empathy, which is defined as empathy that influences teaching practices. Specifically, I studied how mathematics graduate student instructors conceptualize pedagogical empathy and analyzed how pedagogical empathy might influence their teaching decisions. To address my research questions, I designed a qualitative phenomenological study in which I conducted observations and interviews with 11 mathematics graduate student instructors who were teaching precalculus courses at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.

The Downfall: Listening To Non-Urban Communities And Their Language Ideologies, Jessica Sierk, Theresa Catalano
The Downfall: Listening To Non-Urban Communities And Their Language Ideologies, Jessica Sierk, Theresa Catalano
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Increased mobility due to globalization and other geopolitical shifts has changed school demographics worldwide. In the Midwest, much of this new immigrant population is Spanishspeaking and in need of language support. Consequently, schools play an important role in responding to the New Latino Diaspora. In this paper, we describe how unconscious language ideologies inhibited social change that could improve conditions for new student populations in two non-urban high schools in Nebraska (Stockbridge and Springvale, pseudonyms). This critical discourse analysis draws on ethnographic data from a larger study, including participant observations and semi-structured interviews. Findings reveal language ideologies that use language …

An Eye Tracking Replication Study Of A Randomized Controlled Trial On The Effects Of Embedded Computer Language Switching, Cole Peterson
An Eye Tracking Replication Study Of A Randomized Controlled Trial On The Effects Of Embedded Computer Language Switching, Cole Peterson
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The use of multiple programming languages (polyglot programming) during software development is common practice in modern software development. However, not much is known about how the use of these different languages affects developer productivity. The study presented in this thesis replicates a randomized controlled trial that investigates the use of multiple languages in the context of database programming tasks. Participants in our study were given coding tasks written in Java and one of three SQL-like embedded languages: plain SQL in strings, Java methods only, a hybrid embedded language that was more similar to Java. In addition to recording the online …
Finite Population Corrections For Two-Level Hierarchical Linear Models With Binary Predictors, Steven Svoboda
Finite Population Corrections For Two-Level Hierarchical Linear Models With Binary Predictors, Steven Svoboda
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Answering social science research questions about clustered data necessitates collecting data using sampling schemes, which may result in hierarchical data structures. Hierarchical liner modeling (HLM) techniques are required to account for the interdependency of observations due to clustering. However, traditional HLM assumes the target population is infinitely large or near enough to infinitely large for practical purposes (i.e., the sample consists of less than 5% of the target population). Often times, the assumption of an infinitely large target population may not hold.
The current study was conducted in two separate phases using Monte Carlo simulation methods. First, the continuous predictors …
Inscribing The South For Harper's Weekly In 1866, Ashlyn Stewart
Inscribing The South For Harper's Weekly In 1866, Ashlyn Stewart
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The top weekly publication in the nineteenth-century United States, Harper’s Weekly, faced a new challenge after it had survived the Civil War: what would keep readers subscribing to the periodical in peacetime? To maintain their remarkably large readership, the editors looked southward and produced abundant content about the Reconstruction South for its primarily Northeastern readership. A noteworthy portion of that content was a series of powerful illustrated articles known as “Pictures of the South,” which ran from April to October 1866. Seasoned war correspondents Alfred R. Waud and Theodore R. Davis travelled through the rapidly rebuilding South on behalf of …
An Algorithm For Building Language Superfamilies Using Swadesh Lists, Bill Mutabazi
An Algorithm For Building Language Superfamilies Using Swadesh Lists, Bill Mutabazi
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The main contributions of this thesis are the following: i. Developing an algorithm to generate language families and superfamilies given for each input language a Swadesh list represented using the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) notation. ii. The algorithm is novel in using the Levenshtein distance metric on the IPA representation and in the way it measures overall distance between pairs of Swadesh lists. iii. Building a Swadesh list for the author's native Kinyarwanda language because a Swadesh list could not be found even after an extensive search for it.

What She Became?, Sarwa Abdulghafoor
What She Became?, Sarwa Abdulghafoor
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
WHAT SHE BECAME? is a thesis comprised of a thirteen- page introduction and 35 poems. As is evident from the title, the poems are about the poet’s unsettling personal and creative journey, as well as her personal movements, her traumatic childhood, her individual and cultural backgrounds. The author takes her readers through the experiences of women in war-torn Iraqi Kurdistan from the early 80s to the present day. Her poetry gives you a glimpse of life under a patriarchal regime that attempts to stifle women’s voices. The introduction dives deeper into her own personal history as a female Kurdish writer, …
Identity And Technology In An Efl Context: A Study Of Egyptian Teachers And Adult Learners, Alia Emara
Identity And Technology In An Efl Context: A Study Of Egyptian Teachers And Adult Learners, Alia Emara
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Globalization and the advent of technology have compelled many Egyptians to master the English language to participate in an increasingly competitive knowledge-centered global economy. Therefore, the demand for English language classes has been increasing in Egypt in recent years. However, English language classes alone may not guarantee that learners become technologically competent to master 21st century skills. Therefore, one purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine how Egyptian EFL teachers and Egyptian EFL adult learners utilize technology and digital resources in teaching and learning English to promote autonomous learning and 21st century skills. The study also …
"You Have Witchcraft In Your Lips": Sensory Witchcraft In Shakespeare's Antony And Cleopatra And Macbeth, Hannah Kanninen
"You Have Witchcraft In Your Lips": Sensory Witchcraft In Shakespeare's Antony And Cleopatra And Macbeth, Hannah Kanninen
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Scholarship on witches and witchcraft within Shakespeare’s plays has been a popular subject for many scholars. But one of Shakespeare’s most famous characters has not yet been integrated into this scholarship: Cleopatra from Antony and Cleopatra. Although scholars have often noted her “witchiness,” none have argued for an interpretation of Cleopatra as a witch. This is because traditional definitions of witchcraft have not been able to include Cleopatra. In comparison, Lady Macbeth from Macbeth has often been cited as the fourth witch in the play. But this interpretation relies upon examining Lady Macbeth’s perceived masculinity, which subsequently also makes her …
Addressing The Need For An Alternative Education Collaborative In Nonmetropolitan School Districts, Trina Pettit
Addressing The Need For An Alternative Education Collaborative In Nonmetropolitan School Districts, Trina Pettit
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Through both federal and state educational legislation, there have been efforts to increase the accountability of schools in meeting the educational needs of all students and increasing the nation's graduation rates. States and districts across the nation have responded differently to these laws. As one pattern, there has been a rise in alternative schools and programs developed to address the educational needs of students who have not been having success with the traditional school model. Even as alternative schooling becomes more common, there is limited guidance in establishing these programs and limited professional development designed specifically for those teaching or …

Zea E-Books Collection
A compilation of short fiction from Dr. Bev’s ‘Introduction to English Studies’
Throughout history, humankind has gathered together collections of beautiful things, ranging from bottle-caps to coins to seashells or even flowers. No matter the season, humans have devoted hours of their time to admire and share the world’s beauty with those around them. These relationships then become their own collections of the beautiful, friends and family gathering together to appreciate that which they find most lovely, spanning across distance, hardship, and time. Today, we continue to admire the world’s beauty and cherish the love we find there. The word …
Early Language And Literacy Skills Of Spanish-Speaking Dual Language Learners, Alejandro Rodriguez, Marc Goodrich, Maggie Harms, Lisa Fitton
Early Language And Literacy Skills Of Spanish-Speaking Dual Language Learners, Alejandro Rodriguez, Marc Goodrich, Maggie Harms, Lisa Fitton
UCARE: Research Products
The purpose of this study is to examine the early language measures that are the best predictors of English reading achievement and to determine whether assessing DLLs’ Spanish language skills contributes to the prediction of English reading achievement. Preschool and kindergarten often represent DLLs’ first significant exposure to English, and development of English language proficiency is strongly linked to English reading achievement (Storch & Whitehurst, 2002). Because DLLs may not be exposed to English consistently prior to preschool or kindergarten, they often enter kindergarten with lower levels of English proficiency than their monolingual peers. This makes it difficult to identify …

The parent-child relationship is a cornerstone of early childhood development and one-way early childhood programs can have a positive influence on early development is to adopt programmatic features to enhance this relationship. Research supports these conclusions in both U.S. and cross-cultural contexts, even though assumptions about parenting and the parent-child relationship may differ across cultures. However, for true understanding of cultural differences, it is important to have comparable measures across cultures. The purpose of the study is to assess measurement invariance of the two constructs of the Child-parent Relationship Scale using data gathered in programs serving low-income preschool children in …

Writing After The Human: Marie Darrieussecq’S And Anne Garréta’S Posthumanisms, Annabel L. Kim
20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium
In our current moment of climate catastrophe and impending planetary doom, the posthuman seems like a harbinger of an all too imminent reality (felt especially keenly in the age of COVID-19). In the twenty-first century, the humanities, grappling with the multifarious failures and excesses of traditional humanism, are attempting to abandon the anthropocentric epistemologies and practices that have characterized Western thought and culture and to create new models for thinking the world—models that are able to accommodate the nonhuman and welcome other forms of life and matter as objects of focus, moving thus from an imperialist vertical mode of conquering …

Using the text from job ads, we introduce a new dataset to describe the evolution of work from 1950 to 2000. We show that the transformation of the US labor market away from routine cognitive and manual tasks and toward nonroutine interactive and analytic tasks has been larger than prior research has found, with a substantial fraction of total changes occurring within narrowly defined job titles. We provide narrative and systematic evidence on changes in task content within job titles and on the emergence and disappearance of individual job titles. (JEL E24, J21, J24, J31, N32)
Time And The Bibliographer: A Meditation On The Spirit Of Book Studies, Matt Cohen
Time And The Bibliographer: A Meditation On The Spirit Of Book Studies, Matt Cohen
Department of English: Faculty Publications
In light of the global return of tribalism, racism, nationalism, and religious hypocrisy to power’s center stage, it is worth returning to the question of the relevance of bibliography. It is a time when, at least at the seats of power in the United States and some other places, books seem to have become almost meaningless. Bibliographic pioneer D.F. McKenzie’s strategy was not to constrain bibliography in self-defense, but to expand it, to go on the offense. What is our course? This essay explores bibliography’s past in order to suggest ways in which it can gain from an engagement with …

Encourage learning about complex, confusing, or even just random topics that were covered in fictional stories. Later on, shift the narrative from "discover new topics from what we are reading" to "what is the author trying to say here? What was their intent? What clues is the author giving us, and what do you think will happen next in the story?". This brings elementary schoolers a first interaction with deeper English themes, such as author's intent, at a low-stakes interaction to build confidence in the works and in themselves.

An Annotated Bibliography Of Archaeoentomology, Diana Gallagher
An Annotated Bibliography Of Archaeoentomology, Diana Gallagher
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
For my Master’s Degree Project, I have undertaken to compile an annotated bibliography of a selection of the current literature on archaeoentomology. While not exhaustive by any means, it is designed to cover the main topics of interest to entomologists and archaeologists working in this odd, dark corner at the intersection of these two disciplines. I have found many obscure works but some publications are not available without a trip to the Royal Society’s library in London or the expenditure of far more funds than I can justify. Still, the goal is to provide in one place, a list, as …

Brain Activation For Cochlear Implant Users: A Pilot Fnirs Study, Makayla Gill, Ceceli Bonitto, Bailey Heaton, Yingying Wang
UCARE: Research Products
Cochlear implants (CIs) have become a widespread device for individuals with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) to regain hearing ability and improve quality of life. However, the brain needs to adapt to this bionic device and relearn the function of hearing, especially for speech sounds. Because the auditory inputs through a CI are not the same as those heard by individuals with typical hearing, aural rehabilitation takes time. The goal of this study is to examine neural bases of speech perception in adult CI users using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Two adults with bilateral SNHL and CI(s) were fitted with …
