The Impact Of Elementary School Counseling Programs On Student Behavioral Outcomes In The First Year Of Middle School, Brenda Chaney Leggiadro
The Impact Of Elementary School Counseling Programs On Student Behavioral Outcomes In The First Year Of Middle School, Brenda Chaney Leggiadro
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
School counselors are uniquely positioned within the P-12 education system to ensure that all students meet developmental needs in academic, career, and social-emotional areas in order to become successful and contributing members of society. School counselors collaborate with other school staff and parents/caregivers to ensure that students finish high school and are well-equipped for the challenges of the future.
Because students who experience even one suspension as early as seventh grade show an increased likelihood of dropping out of high school, it is important to explore ways that schools can effectively decrease the chance that a student will receive behavior …
These Are My People: An Ethnography Of Quiltcon, Kristin Barrus
These Are My People: An Ethnography Of Quiltcon, Kristin Barrus
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis presents the first ethnography of QuiltCon, the annual fan and artist convention for quiltmakers who identify with and participate in a social phenomenon called the Modern Quilt Movement (MQM) within the 21st century quilt world. QuiltCon (QC) is one product of this movement. This study considers the following questions: What kinds of people attend QC, and what types of experiences and encounters do they expect at the convention? What needs are met at QC for this subset of quiltmakers who attend and for the greater community of Modern quiltmakers? What role does QC play in cementing the identity …
The Lion And The Eagle: The Ramifications Of Reduced Us-Iran Educational Diplomacy, Cameron Azimi
The Lion And The Eagle: The Ramifications Of Reduced Us-Iran Educational Diplomacy, Cameron Azimi
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In the 2018-2019 school year, the number of Iranian students in the US fell for the first time since 2005. This essay contributes to the educational diplomacy subfield of cultural diplomacy literature by being the first to analyze the causes and effects of this change. By interpreting Iranian student data in the context of political events, it becomes clear that hostile Trump era rhetoric and policy are chiefly responsible. As a result, the US stands to lose economic benefits and influence to states like Russia that are eager to exert soft power through international students. With educational diplomacy being the …

The Crisis Of June 2020: The Case Of The Retired Generals And Admirals And The Clarion Calls Of Their Critics In Lex Non Scripta (Historic) Perspective, Joshua Kastenberg
Nebraska Law Review
In the first week of June 2020, former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, a retired United States Marine Corps general with substantial wartime experience, along with other retired senior military officers took the unusual step of condemning President Donald Trump for his response to nation-wide demonstrations demanding equal justice and an end to the existence of systemic and institutional racism. Shortly afterward, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell (who had also served as the Sixty-Fifth Secretary of State), likewise argued that President Trump “drifted away” from the Constitution and undermined democracy. Joining Powell and Mattis were, …

After Forty Years, Nebraska Weighs In On Assisting Suicide: Criminal Liability For Assisting Suicide In Nebraska After State V. Stubbendieck, Samuel S. Baue
Nebraska Law Review
In State v. Stubbendieck, the Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed the first conviction for assisting suicidein state history, even though the Nebraska Legislature had criminalized assisting suicide more than forty years prior. The Nebraska Legislature made assisting suicide a Class IV felony in 1977 by enacting section 28-307 of the Nebraska Revised Statutes, which reads in pertinent part: “A person commits assisting suicide when, with intent to assist another person in committing suicide, he aids and abets him in committing or attempting to commit suicide.”In interpreting the statute for the first time, the Nebraska Supreme Court clarified the legal contours of assisting suicide …

The Adverse Associations Of Classrooms’ Indoor Air Quality And Thermal Comfort Conditions On Students’ Illness Related Absenteeism Between Heating And Non-Heating Seasons—A Pilot Study, Shihan Deng
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
(1) The association of the indoor environmental conditions in classrooms with illnessrelated absenteeism (IRA) was not well investigated. In addition, studying the association between heating and non-heating seasons were very limited; (2) To fill this knowledge gap, a research team collected various indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort conditions (TC) of 85 elementary classrooms in two school districts from the Midwestern United States throughout an academic year; in total, 255 classroom visits were performed. A negative binomial regression model was implied to associate the classroom’s IAQ and TC with IRA, separating for heating and non-heating seasons; (3) During non-heating …
A Reimagining Of The Chacoan World, Larry Benson, Richard W. Loose
A Reimagining Of The Chacoan World, Larry Benson, Richard W. Loose
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A new paradigm of the Chacoan world is presented, wherein Chaco Canyon is considered to be a mostly unoccupied architectural complex that functioned primarily as a pilgrimage destination. Chaco was the political, religious, and social focal point of people living in outlying regions. The resident population of the Canyon consisted of a small number of caretakers, charged with maintaining great house structures, food supplies, and their ceremonial contents. Chacoan chiefdoms were mostly located in large, well-watered, agriculturally-based communities situated at the base of mountains that ring the San Juan Basin, e.g., the Chuskas. Chiefly elites lived year-round in those areas, …

Best Practices For Preschool Music Education: Supporting Music‑Making Throughout The Day, Jentry Stoneman Barrett, Rachel E. Schachter, Danni Gilbert, Mathew Fuerst
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Active engagement in music has numerous academic and social benefits for young children and music-making is included in many early childhood standards and preschool curricula. The purpose of this article is to provide quality resources for classroom teachers to use in providing music-making activities for young children, ages 3–5. Although teachers may use music in their classrooms, we provide resources and suggestions for more intentional and extended integration of music-making. Specifically, we identify best practices for preschool music education based on key standards and research as well as with common music pedagogies. We then turn to concrete examples of how …
Interpretation Of Ambiguous Pronouns In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Kara Hawthorne, Susan J. Loveall
Interpretation Of Ambiguous Pronouns In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Kara Hawthorne, Susan J. Loveall
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Background — Pronouns are referentially ambiguous (e.g. she could refer to any female), yet they are common in everyday conversations. Individuals with typical development (TD) employ several strategies to avoid pronoun interpretation errors, including the subject bias — an assumption that a pronoun typically refers to the subject (or, with the closely related order-of-mention bias, the first-mentioned character) of the previous sentence. However, it is unknown if adults with intellectual disability (ID) share this strategy or the extent to which the subject bias is associated with non-verbal abilities or receptive vocabulary.
Methods — We tested 22 adults with mixed-aetiology ID …
Disappearing Chairs And Related Matters: A Visual Essay For Wittgenstein’S Philosophical Investigations (Section 80), Michael R. Hill
Disappearing Chairs And Related Matters: A Visual Essay For Wittgenstein’S Philosophical Investigations (Section 80), Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Are there rules capturing the meaning of all possible uses (now, past, and future) of the word “chair”? Ludwig Wittgenstein raised this issue in Section 80 of the Philosophical Investigations where he stated: “I say, ‘There is a chair over there’”. Does “chair” in his utterance mean anything? For myself, this question can be approached autobiographically and chronologically. As a youngster, my earliest understanding of “chair” is reflected in the graphic illustration from a Dick and Jane reader (Figure 1) with re-imagined dialog: “This is a chair”. I understood a chair to be a human-made object — usually constructed from …

Taxonomic Revision Of Eunota Togata (Laferté-Sénectère, 1841) (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) In North America With A New Subspecies From Western Texas And New Mexico, United States, Robert E. Acciavatti
Insecta Mundi
Within Nearctic Cicindelidae, Cicindelini, Eunota togata (LaFerté-Sénectère, 1841) (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) exists as several distinct phenotypes, some described as subspecies whose taxonomic status has been misinterpreted. Eunota togata togata applies to adults marked with broadly sinuate inner margins on shiny brown elytra common across northern coastal Gulf of Mexico. Eunota togata fascinans (Casey, 1914), new synonymy, incorrectly applied to populations in western Texas and New Mexico, United States, is considered a junior synonym of E. togata globicollis (Casey, 1913), the predominant subspecies with broadly sinuate inner margins on coppery elytra found from eastern New Mexico and western Texas into the …

Applications Of The Critical Power Model To Dynamic Constant External Resistance Exercise: A Brief Review Of The Critical Load Test, Haley C. Bergstrom, Taylor K. Dinyer, Pasquale J. Succi, Caleb C. Voskuil, Terry J. Housh
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
The study and application of the critical power (CP) concept has spanned many decades. The CP test provides estimates of two distinct parameters, CP and W0 , that describe aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacities, respectively. Various mathematical models have been used to estimate the CP and W0 parameters across exercise modalities. Recently, the CP model has been applied to dynamic constant external resistance (DCER) exercises. The same hyperbolic relationship that has been established across various continuous, whole-body, dynamic movements has also been demonstrated for upper-, lower-, and whole-body DCER exercises. The asymptote of the load versus repetition relationship is defined …

1. In mosaic marine habitats, such as intertidal zones, ocean acidification (OA) is exacerbated by high variability of pH, temperature, and biological CO2 production. The nonlinear interactions among these drivers can be context-specific and their effect on organisms in these habitats remains largely unknown, warranting further investigation. 2. We were particularly interested in Mytilus edulis (the blue mussel) from intertidal zones of the Gulf of Maine (GOM), USA, for this study. GOM is a hot spot of global climate change (average sea surface temperature (SST) increasing by >0.2°C/year) with >60% decline in mussel population over the past 40 years. 3. …
Racial Bias In A Provider-Patient Relationship: May Give Rise To An Intentional Infliction Of Emotional Distress Claim, Lauren Ziegenbein
Racial Bias In A Provider-Patient Relationship: May Give Rise To An Intentional Infliction Of Emotional Distress Claim, Lauren Ziegenbein
Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)
Racism continues to permeate the provider-patient relationship today on both the provider and the patient’s sides. One way to combat this racism is to bring an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim against the provider (if you are a patient) or against the patient (if you are a provider). It will be a very high bar to reach, but it is possible to reach it, as we saw in Brown and Greer.

Moving From High-Stakes Exams To Meaningful Placement, Suzanne Ames, Doug Emory
Instructional Leadership Abstracts
Placement testing is a routine part of the college intake process even though the inequities built into standardized tests are well known in higher education and are the antithesis of an open access institution like a community college (Nettles, 2019; Wai et al., 2008). The great majority of two-year college students begin their college journey by taking high-stakes standardized tests that assign them a placement score in math and English. To give students a better shot at success, and with the welcome departure of the nationally standardized COMPASS placement test, Lake Washington Institute of Technology took the opportunity offered and …

Shakespeare's Henriadic Monarchy And Chaucerian/Elizabethan Religion, Paul Olson
Shakespeare's Henriadic Monarchy And Chaucerian/Elizabethan Religion, Paul Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Shakespeare, interpreting late medieval English history from the ages of Geoffrey and Thomas Chaucer, gives us a second tetralogy (1595-99) that less defends the "Tudor myth" than creates a lens for viewing the formation of a unitary religious/political culture. Writing near the end of Elizabeth's reign, after serious Catholic insurrection had quieted, he examines how Act of Supremacy sacerdotal monarchy eschews rebellion and decadence, creating eidola paralleling Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales ones. In the latter, Chaucer presented, to the court, narratives of Catholic clerical failure, Jovinian decadence and the possibility of reformed penance. However Shakespeare turns, for his salvific, from honest …

Tweetdrought: A Deep-Learning Drought Impacts Recognizer Based On Twitter Data, Beichen Zhang, Frank Schilder, Kelly Helm Smith, Michael Hayes, Sherri Harms, Tsegaye Tadesse
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Acquiring a better understanding of drought impacts becomes increasingly vital under a warming climate. Traditional drought indices describe mainly biophysical variables and not impacts on social, economic, and environmental systems. We utilized natural language processing and bidirectional encoder representation from Transformers (BERT) based transfer learning to fine-tune the model on the data from the news-based Drought Impact Report (DIR) and then apply it to recognize seven types of drought impacts based on the filtered Twitter data from the United States. Our model achieved a satisfying macro-F1 score of 0.89 on the DIR test set. The model was then applied to …

From The Trenches To The Writer’S Desk: Establishing A Collection Of Children’S Books Authored By Military Veterans In An Academic Library, Casey D. Hoeve
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Kansas State University possesses a collection of juvenile literature to aid Education and English Department programs. KState is also the university with the largest military population in the state. It was discovered that several famous children’s authors were military veterans. Building upon this research, over 160 children’s authors who served in the military were identified. K-State Libraries NEH Endowment Committee funded the curation of a military veteran children’s literature collection, the only known academic library to possess such a collection. The collection enabled the libraries to provide outreach through access to the materials, internet resources, and special collections exhibits.

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
The occurrence of two members of the genus Hypsugo, namely H. alaschanicus and H. savii caucasicus, have been reported for Mongolia in the literature. Due to various taxonomic reassignments within and between genera, the number of records for the genus Hypsugo in Mongolia is quite scarce and sometimes not resolved at species or subspecies level. Despite recognition of the two above-mentioned species, recent reports based on genetic analyses describe only new and further records of H. alaschanicus. Thus, it exists a large uncertainty regarding the occurrence and distribution of H. savii caucasicus in Mongolia. Here, our efforts …
Pesticide Usage Is Compromising People’S Health In The United States: Ideas For Reducing Damages, Terence J. Centner
Pesticide Usage Is Compromising People’S Health In The United States: Ideas For Reducing Damages, Terence J. Centner
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
The development of synthetic pesticides has provided new tools for addressing troublesome pests. A review of parts of the registration process for pesticides in the United States identifies an outdated evaluation system that undervalues health damages. Registration fails to adequately consider co-formulants and effects of exposure to multiple chemicals. Frustration with failures to protect people and property from damages accompanying pesticide usage has led injured plaintiffs to resort to tort lawsuits to secure relief. However, litigation involves compensating injured persons after they are injured rather than preventing injury. A more proactive approach would be to prevent situations that injure people. …

Impact Of Maize Hybrid Selection On Water Productivity Under Deficit Irrigation In Semiarid Western Nebraska, Strahinja Stepanovic, Daran Rudnick, Greg R. Kruger
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
The future economic and agricultural sustainability of semiarid western Nebraska will largely depend on more efficient utilization of the declining groundwater resources. The scope of this research was to evaluate the maize hybrid yield, water productivity (WP; i.e. grain yield produced per unit of water consumed), and irrigation water productivity (IWP; i.e. increase in grain yield per unit of irrigation water applied) across a range of semiarid climatic conditions (i.e. drought, normal, and wet) and irrigation treatments. Total of 13 maize hybrids were evaluated under full irrigation (FI), deficit irrigation (DI, receiving ~50% less irrigation water than FI), and dryland …

A Routine Electroencephalography Monitoring System For Automated Sports-Related Concussion Detection, Amirsalar Mansouri, Patrick Ledwidge, Khalid Sayood, Dennis L. Molfese
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Cases of concussions in the United States keep increasing and are now up to 2 million to 3 million incidents per year. Although concussions are recoverable and usually not life-threatening, the degree and rate of recovery may vary depending on age, severity of the injury, and past concussion history. A subsequent concussion before full recovery may lead to more-severe brain damage and poorer outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings can identify brain dysfunctionality and abnormalities, such as after a concussion. Routine EEG monitoring can be a convenient method for reducing unreported injuries and preventing long-term damage, especially among groups with a greater …
