Belonging: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of Communication Coaching Workshops On Participation And Self-Esteem For International Students With Non-Native Accents At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michaela Reddel

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The current study explored survey results of 17 participants who were international students with accents at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. These participants participated in a communication workshop hosted by the researcher who is a Speech-Language Pathology graduate student. The Acculturation Model (Berry, 1997), the work by Dai and Chen (2014) in Intercultural Communication Competence, and evidence-based practices from the field of Speech-Language Pathology informed the creation of this study and the workshops. The workshops were designed for participants to learn various communication strategies with the purpose of increasing communication participation and self-esteem. The goal of increasing these two constructs was …

Examining The Effects Of The Write Sounds Intervention With First Grade Students, Brittany Wambold Jul 2021

Examining The Effects Of The Write Sounds Intervention With First Grade Students, Brittany Wambold

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Students who have difficulty with reading and writing are at risk to continue having difficulty throughout their schooling. Lack of time and resources may be a contributing factor for students not receiving additional instruction for both skills. However, there is evidence that balanced reading and writing programs can be effective. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Write Sounds intervention for students who had deficits in reading and writing. This study was a multiple baseline across participants design with three first-grade students who showed difficulty with reading, spelling, and phonemic awareness. Students received 40 minutes …

Navigating Non-Physical Borders: An Examination Of The Boundaries Of Exclusion And Ideas About Inclusion Of Immigrants In American Communities, Alison O'Toole Jul 2021

Navigating Non-Physical Borders: An Examination Of The Boundaries Of Exclusion And Ideas About Inclusion Of Immigrants In American Communities, Alison O'Toole

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Are exclusionary boundaries drawn by those who aren’t accepting of immigrants malleable? Do beliefs about inclusion on the part of those who tend to be more accepting toward immigrants have limits? To address these questions, I look at the major factors that I believe influence reactions to immigrants: national identity and trust, and values. This dissertation contributes to two important goals. The first is to help ensure that long- term residents in communities accept people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The second is softening the divisive power of the immigration issue to make it less of a staple in the …

Readings Of (Non-)Consumption In Jan-Ole Gerster's Oh Boy (2012), Christopher Etheredge Jul 2021

Readings Of (Non-)Consumption In Jan-Ole Gerster's Oh Boy (2012), Christopher Etheredge

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis consists of a series of close readings of consumptive acts in Jan-Ole Gerster’s debut film, Oh Boy (2012). I argue that the analysis of consumptive acts enables the viewer to develop a more nuanced understanding of the characters and their relationships to one another. Furthermore, these consumptive acts shift our understanding of other themes present within the film, such as the characters’ confrontations with their past and with feelings of guilt. Confrontations with the past have played a large role in many scholars’ and interpreters’ understanding of the film, as it encourages in some ways reading Oh Boy …

No Easy Way Out: A Memoir Of Interruption, Cameron S. Steele Jul 2021

No Easy Way Out: A Memoir Of Interruption, Cameron S. Steele

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

No Easy Way Out: A Memoir of Interruption is a collection of personal essays examining themes of race, the body, violence and desire as it seeks to examine and interrupt inherited, normative understandings of work, art, beauty, love, and belonging. An illness narrative that follows my experiences as a girl born into a family of white Southern wealth, as a young crime reporter in the Deep South, and as a mother, scholar, and writer in the Midwest, No Easy Way Out raises questions about the entanglement of privilege, illness, and access to care. The book considers the stories I covered …

Cubesats Deliver New Insights Into Agricultural Water Use At Daily And 3 M Resolutions, Bruno Aragon, Matteo G. Ziliani, Rasmus Houborg, Trenton E. Franz, Matthew F. Mccabe

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Earth observation has traditionally required a compromise in data collection. That is, one could sense the Earth with high spatial resolution occasionally; or with lower spatial fidelity regularly. For many applications, both frequency and detail are required. Precision agriculture is one such example, with sub-10 m spatial, and daily or sub-daily retrieval representing a key goal. Towards this objective, we produced the first cloud-free 3 m daily evaporation product ever retrieved from space, leveraging recently launched nano-satellite constellations to showcase this emerging potential. Focusing on three agricultural fields located in Nebraska, USA, high-resolution crop water use estimates are delivered via …

Disrupting Evasion Pedagogies, Kara Mitchell Viesca, Tricia Gray Jun 2021

Disrupting Evasion Pedagogies, Kara Mitchell Viesca, Tricia Gray

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

As we have researched in schools and reflected on our own teaching, we have come to recognize the lie and our untruthfulness that permeates many of our cultural scripts (Gutierrez et al., 1995) and practices as teachers. It is within these cultural scripts and practices that inequity is perpetuated and humanizing learning evaded. Thus, what we term evasion pedagogies, serve to sustain the status quo and are powerful tools to maintain oppressive projects like white supremacy, heteronormativity, gender binaries, patriarchy, ableism, classism, and linguicism. In this piece, we examine the notion of evasion pedagogies as a powerful lie in practice …

A Systematic Review Of Recommendations For Behavioral Health Services For Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults: The Three-Legged Stool Of Evidence-Based Practice Is Unbalanced, Natalie Holt, Allura L. Ralston, Debra A. Hope, Richard Mocarski, Nathan Woodruff

Trans Collaborations Academic Papers

There is a growing literature of clinical recommendations for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) affirming behavioral health care, yet it is unknown to what extent these recommendations are rooted in evidence-based practice (EBP). This systematic review included 65 articles published between 2009 and 2018 with recommendations for behavioral health services with TGD adults, emphasizing general clinical care. Coded variables included type of article, participant demographics, aspects of EBP, and whether care was informed by objective assessment. Most articles did not equally draw from all components of EBP. Recommendations for specific clinical problems are increasingly available and address diversity within TGD …

Urbanization Of The Salt Plains: Early Industry And Material Culture Of The Kauffman Neighborhood, June Weber

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The material history of Lincoln, Nebraska has previously been addressed through several theses and papers, however, the Kauffman collection up to this point has not been thoroughly analyzed and summarized as a whole. Through this thesis, the results of data from the features excavated will be compared with the analysis of artifact collections revealing the social dynamics of both the individual household and the neighborhood itself. Census data and Sanborn maps will be integrated in order to better visualize changes in household composition and size throughout time. Primarily by analyzing glass bottles and ceramic assemblages found within individual privies, cisterns, …

Genomics-Guided Refinement Of Butterfly Taxonomy, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Paul A. Opler, Nick V. Grishin May 2021

Genomics-Guided Refinement Of Butterfly Taxonomy, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Paul A. Opler, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Continuing with comparative genomic exploration of worldwide butterfly fauna, we use all proteincoding genes as they are retrieved from the whole genome shotgun sequences for phylogeny construction. Analysis of these genome-scale phylogenies projected onto the taxonomic classification and the knowledge about butterfly phenotypes suggests further refinements of butterfly taxonomy that are presented here. As a general rule, we assign most prominent clades of similar genetic differentiation to the same taxonomic rank, and use criteria based on relative population diversification and the extent of gene exchange for species delimitation. As a result, 7 tribes, 4 subtribes, 14 genera, and 9 subgenera …

Towards A Machine Learning Based Generalizable Framework For Detecting Covid-19 Misinformation On Social Media, Yuanzhi Chen

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, online social media has become a conduit for the rapid propagation of misinformation. The misinformation is a type of fake news that is created inadvertently without the intention of causing harm. Yet COVID-19 misinformation has caused serious social disruptions including accidental death and destruction of public property. Timely prevention of the propagation of online misinformation requires the development of automated detection tools. Machine learning (ML) based models have been used to automate techniques for identifying fake news. These techniques involve converting text data …

Safety Measures, Laura Madeline Wiseman May 2021

Safety Measures, Laura Madeline Wiseman

Zea E-Books Collection

Safety Measures documents a solo cross-country bicycle adventure. After completing a ride across the United States in 2017, from Astoria, Oregon, to Yorktown, Virginia, in 60 days, pedaling 4,200 miles with support, Laura Madeline Wiseman endeavored to ride her bicycle, Lexa, across the country alone. This lyric collection in creative nonfiction and prose poetry recounts that journey. From Anacortes, Washington, to Bar Harbor, Maine, this 4,300-mile, 59-day ride begins and ends in Minnesota, the site of Wiseman’s childhood summer vacations at Leach Lake. Biking, fishing, beachcombing, and other experiences with her dad had instilled an adventurous spirit. She hoped to …

Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Fried In Recycled Palm Oil: Implications For Nutrition And Health, Aemiro Tadesse Zula, Derese Tamiru Desta, Mary S. Willis

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Fish constitutes a occasional food for the Sidama people of Hawassa, the capital city of Ethiopia’s Sidama Region and the site of a large endorheic lake. Freshly-caught fish, especially Nile tilapia or koroso in Local name, are typically fried prior to consumption. Despite the sensory qualities, fried foods are not always advisable due to the impact of frying on the nutritional quality of food. This study was designed to assess the nutritional quality of Nile tilapia that had been fried in the same palm oil over six consecutive frying cycles. The raw fish were purchased from the Lake Hawassa fish …

Separator Of Diametral Path Graphs, Cuong Than May 2021

Separator Of Diametral Path Graphs, Cuong Than

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Nowadays, graph algorithms have been applied to many practical issues such as networking, very large-scale integration (VLSI), and transport systems, etc. Constructing an algorithm to find a maximum independent set (MIS) is one of the first NP-Hard problems which have been studied for a long time. Most scientists believe that there is no polynomial-time algorithm for this problem in general graphs. However, many efficient algorithms and approximation schemes to resolve the MIS problem are found in some special graph classes. In this thesis, we are going to introduce a separator construction for a diametral path graph. By using a property …

Materiality And Construction Of A Church In Myanmar, Sunkist Judson May 2021

Materiality And Construction Of A Church In Myanmar, Sunkist Judson

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

This is my investigation related to Theinla village church. This is an investigation of architectural impacts on a protestant religious house of worship experience through a cultural case study. Churches were built and design based on worship culture and traditions. Churches have evolved for over two thousand years due to innovation and technology and imitating previous architecture styles. The way people worship in the protestant religion is a little different in every culture. I want to find out if there is any overlap in Baptist churches in different cultures. Does material limit the manner in which the church is constructed …

Julia Morgan: Forgotten, Omitted, Overlooked, Or Celebrated, Renee Meyer May 2021

Julia Morgan: Forgotten, Omitted, Overlooked, Or Celebrated, Renee Meyer

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

Julia Morgan (1872-1957) was the first female registered architect in the state of California (1902). Despite her prolific independent practice, recognition for her work came late even for her most known project, Hearst’s Castle in San Simeon, California.

Throughout history, women have been repeatedly left out of the history of architecture and design, often being overshadowed by their male partners. This paper will seek to clarify reasons to decipher why this particular architect was left out of history and the media during her lifetime and will show that her omissions were not solely due to the fact that she was …

Investigating The Role Of Spiders In Integrated Pest Management For Biological Control Of Nebraska Crop Pests, Samantha Daniel

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As generalist predators, spiders are capable of fulfilling a wide variety of ecological niches allowing them to intercept and prey upon an array of insect species. This characteristic could be particularly advantageous within agricultural ecosystems. This project sought to reveal the composition and abundance of spider communities within cornfields in western Nebraska and the impact of agronomic practices on those communities as well as determine the potential for spider predation upon two key pests of corn. Spiders were collected from eight corn fields from May to August 2017 and four corn fields from May to August 2018. Additionally, the populations …
