What Forestry Has Done, Treadwell Cleaveland Jr. Jan 1908

What Forestry Has Done, Treadwell Cleaveland Jr.

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Many people in this country think that forestry had never been tried until the government began to practice it upon the national forests. Yet forestry is practiced by every civilized country in the world, except China and Turkey. It gets results which can be got in no other way, and which are necessary to the general welfare. Forestry is not a new thing. It was discussed two thousand years ago, and it has been studied and applied with increasing thoroughness ever since.

The principles of forestry are everywhere the same. They rest on natural laws, which are at work everywhere …

Forage Crops For Hogs In Kansas And Oklahoma., C. E. Quinn Jan 1908

Forage Crops For Hogs In Kansas And Oklahoma., C. E. Quinn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Farmers are more and more realizing that pasture is necessary for the most economical production of pork. Those who are raising hogs and putting them on the market with the least ·cost have their entire farms fenced" hog-tight." This enables them to give the hogs the range of the meadows and fields when the crops have been harvested. Much that would otherwise be lost is thus saved by the hogs, for they are among the best gleaners of waste grain, weed seeds, and insects in the fields.

Corneille: The Neo-Classic Tragedy And The Greek, Prosser Hall Frye Jul 1906

Corneille: The Neo-Classic Tragedy And The Greek, Prosser Hall Frye

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

It is not solely the fault of our critlcs that we have no such criticism as the French; it is also the fault of our literature. To write a history of English literature like M. Lanson's history -of French literature is, even on that small scale, impossible from the nature of the subject. . To be sure, there is no such general interest in the former as in the latter. The historian or the critic who undertakes French letters finds an opinion already formed, a canon already established. His meal is at least partly ground for him; ' he has …

On The Comparison Of Adverbs In English In The Fourteenth Century, Alma Hosic Jul 1906

On The Comparison Of Adverbs In English In The Fourteenth Century, Alma Hosic

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The following investigation deals with the comparison of adverbs in English in the fourteenth century. This century seems especially important in the history of adverb comparison, since it represents the close of the dialectal period and the beginning of the transition period from Middle to Modern English. A chief purpose has been to connect the adverbial forms of the fourteenth century with those of the preceding and following centuries.

Examples are very full but not exhaustive. The majority of the important literary monuments of the century have been examined. The examples, however, are fuller for the Northern and Midland than …

Arnold's Sources For Schrab And Rustum, Louise Pound Jan 1906

Arnold's Sources For Schrab And Rustum, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It is generally assumed, either explicitly or by inference that Matthew Arnold's Schrab and Rustum (1853) is based on the story as told in the abridgment of the Sháhnáma of Firdawsí by the Rev. J. A. Atkinson (1832), which gives in an appendix a complete rendering of the Schrab and Rustum episode in heroic couplets ; or on Sir John Malcolm's History of Persia (1815); but no one has investigated the relative use made of the two, or the exact debt of the poet to either.

On The Substantivation Of Adjectives In Chaucer, Arthur Garfield Kennedy Jul 1905

On The Substantivation Of Adjectives In Chaucer, Arthur Garfield Kennedy

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The substantivation of adjectives in English has, like most other processes of our language, been so gradual that it is difficult to fix the beginning of it in the case of any particular word or group of words, or at anyone time to measure accurately its progress. Perhaps the most satisfactory results are obtained by . comparing the data made up from the writings of authors of different periods. This investigation is offered as a study of the process of .substantivation of adjectives in the fourteenth century, as shown in the writings of Chaucer. Kellner names three ways in which …

Electric Double-Refraction In Carbon Disulphide At Low Potentials, Gustaf W. Elmen Jan 1905

Electric Double-Refraction In Carbon Disulphide At Low Potentials, Gustaf W. Elmen

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

When light polarized at an angle of forty-five degrees to the; lines of force is passed through certain dielectrics, between two parallel electrodes, they become double-refracting. The difference of phase, 0, between the two components of light at right angles and parallel to the lines of force, as represented by Kerr and verified by later investigators, is

where B is the electro-optic constant, depending on the dielectric, l the length, and a the distance between the plate electrodes in centimeters, and P the difference of potential between the electrodes in e.G.S. units.

An English Version Of Oehlenschlaeger's Hakon Jarl, James Christian Lindberg Jan 1905

An English Version Of Oehlenschlaeger's Hakon Jarl, James Christian Lindberg

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The tragedy Hakon Jarl the Mighty was completed toward the latter part of the year 1805 at Halle, Germany. The author, Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlaeger, wrote the work in Danish and later on translated it into German. It was first published in November, 1807, in Nordiske Digte, and was presented for the first time at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, January 30, 1808. Before this, Oehlenschlaeger had used the same materials in his poem, The Death of Hakon Jarl, which appeared in 1802 .. These materials were taken from the fragments of old Icelandic court poetry as given in the …

Notes On Tennyson's Lancelot And Elaine, Louise Pound Feb 1904

Notes On Tennyson's Lancelot And Elaine, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The chief sources of Tennyson's Idylls are, as so well known, Malory's Morte Darthur and the Mabinogion. Secondary sources are the chronicles of Geoffrey of Monmouth, from whom the poet derived a few name-forms like Igerne and Gorlois, and stray touches in the handling, and the anonymous history, ascribed to Nennius, from which (Lancelot and Elaine, ll. 284-315) he derived his account of Arthur's twelve battles. In 1889, Dr. Walther Wüllenweber pointed out that Tennyson seems also to have drawn upon Ellis' Specimens of Early English Metrical Romances, for a few proper names, like Bellicent and Anguisant, not found elsewhere. …

Mont-Saint-Michel And Chartres, Henry Adams, Ralph Adams Cram

Electronic Texts in American Studies

FROM the moment when, through the courtesy of my friend Barrett Wendell, I came first to know Mr. Henry Adams's book, MontSaint- Michel and Chartres, I was profoundly convinced that this privately printed, jealously guarded volume should be withdrawn from its hiding-place amongst the bibliographical treasures of collectors and amateurs and given that wide publicity demanded alike by its intrinsic nature and the cause it could so admirably serve. To say that the book was a revelation is inadequately to express a fact; at once all the theology, philosophy, and mysticism, the politics, sociology, and economics, the romance, literature, and …

Italian Villas And Their Gardens, Edith Wharton, Maxfield Parrish Jan 1904

Italian Villas And Their Gardens, Edith Wharton, Maxfield Parrish

Electronic Texts in American Studies

Edith Wharton’s Italian Villas and their Gardens (1904) followed her debut novel, The Valley of Decision (1902). Century magazine commissioned Wharton for a series of six articles on Italian architecture and an accompanying book-length collection. Wharton embarked out of Boston in January 1903, disembarked near Genoa, and proceeded to tour widely — Viterbo up to Orvieto; Siena, Florence, Rome, and Venice — following recommendations from Vernon Lee, the book’s dedicatee, who “better than anyone else, has understood and interpreted the garden-magic of Italy.” The book analyzes more than eighty wonders, intercut with fifty-two illustrations: wide-angle photographs and evocative color compositions …

Some Foreign Botanical Gardens And Parks, Charles E. Bessey

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Last summer I had the privilege of visiting a number of botanical gardens and parks in different parts of Europe. The American visitor abroad is constantly reminded of the abundance of parks and botanical gardens in not only the larger cities but even in the small cities and towns. Hyde Park, Regent's Park, St. James Park and Green Park, London; Kew Gardens; Thiergarten, Berlin; Prater Park, Vienna; Moscow; Kislovodsk; Vladikavkaz, Tiflis; Erivan; Batum; Odessa.

Coming now to our own city of Lincoln, a city which has many things about it which are very attractive, one'is made to drop his head …

The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor Jan 1902

The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor

Zea E-Books in American Studies

Ida Craddock took her own life in October 1902, rather than face the 5-year federal prison term she seemed certain to receive following her conviction for distributing this work through the U.S. Mail. It is a short (24-page) pamphlet addressed to young women and men about to embark on a sexual relationship and an honest and frank effort to alleviate the ignorance which both sexes often brought to the marriage union. Craddock's discussion of the "sexual act" stressed that empathy and consideration for one's partner were the vital elements for an enduring marriage. Craddock neither shrank from the description of …

Another Version Of The Ballad Of Lord Randal, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

THE following version of the familiar ballad known variously as "Lord Randal," "Lord Ronald," and so on, was discovered by Mr. H. C. House, of Kingfisher College, Oklahoma, sung in a railroad camp at Geary, Colorado. It should be added to the fifteen or so versions, some of them American, of which Prof. Child makes an exhaustive study, English and Scottish Popular Ballads, I, 151 ff. The identity of the ballad is unmistakable. All the conventional features, the poison, the legacy, the iteration, and the dialogue are present. modified to suit altered local conditions.

Wells And Windmills In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

United States Geological Survey: Publications

SIR :

I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Wells and Windmills in Nebraska," prepared by Erwin Hinckley Barbour, professor of geology in the University of Nebraska and acting State geologist. The data for this manuscript were obtained by Professor Barbour incidental to his studies of the geology of the State, and have been rounded out by special work carried on under his direction. The original manuscript as prepared consisted of two parts the first upon wells, and the second upon homemade windmills but owing to delays in printing the first part, it has been considered advisable …
