Measures Of Racetrack Performance With Regard To Breeding Evaluation Of Trotters, M. J. Ojala, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1981

Measures Of Racetrack Performance With Regard To Breeding Evaluation Of Trotters, M. J. Ojala, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Trotting records on the Finnish Horse were divided into two subsets: the total data set, with 13,000 race records on 554 horses by 206 sires, and the summary data set, with 1,378 records summarized annually for each horse. The purpose of the study was to determine whether these data could be utilized in a simple, yet useful way for the assessment of breeding value. A total of 24 measures of performance based on time at finish, money won and rank at finish were studied in the summary data set. The total data set included four traits compiled from records made …

Nebraska Law Review

In United States v. Progressive, Inc., the United States sought to enjoin the publication of an article describing the operation of thermonuclear devices. The district court concluded that portions of the article constituted "restricted data" and that publication of the article would harm the national security interests of the United States. Pursuant to section 232 of the Atomic Energy Act," the district court issued .a preliminary injunction against the magazine, The Progressive, barring publication of the article. The Progressive appealed, but publication of a letter containing similar information resulted in dismissal of the injunction. This Note will provide …

Geology And Groundwater Supplies Of Southern Dawes And Northern Sheridan Counties, Nebraska, Vernon L. Souders Jan 1981

Geology And Groundwater Supplies Of Southern Dawes And Northern Sheridan Counties, Nebraska, Vernon L. Souders

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

The upland plain in southern Dawes and northern Sheridan counties of northwest Nebraska is underlain by rocks of Tertiary age. These rocks overlie those of Cretaceous and Jurassic ages in this region of about 2250 square miles . Strata of Tertiary age are a source of groundwater for most of the irrigation, municipal, stock, and rural-domestic needs of the area.

Nine stratigraphic units of Tertiary.age were defined by examination of test hole samples and logs and by examining electric logs of oil and gas tests, driller's logs of irrigation wells, and outcrops. Stratigraphic correlations are difficult in the area because …

Intercellular Communication In Plants: Evidence For A Rapidly Generated, Bidirectionally Transmitted Wound Signal, Eric Davies, Anne Schuster Jan 1981

Intercellular Communication In Plants: Evidence For A Rapidly Generated, Bidirectionally Transmitted Wound Signal, Eric Davies, Anne Schuster

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Wounding (whether by excision, abrasion, or puncture) elicited rapid, massive, and enduring formation of polysomes in aged pea stems and other mature tissues. The response depended on temperature and severity of wounding but not on water uptake, and it occurred in tissues adjacent to, distant from, above, and below the site of injury. The kinetics of polysome formation were similar in tissues adjacent to or up to 150 mm distant from the point of injury. The wound-induced increases in proteinsynthesizing capacity of the polysomes both in vivo and in vitro were much greater than the increases in rRNA and poly(A) …

Pseudogymnophallus Alcae Gen. N. Et Sp. N. (Trematoda: Gymnophallidae) From Alcids (Charadriiformes) In Subarctic Seas, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Pseudogymnophallus alcae gen. n. et sp. n. is described for trematodes from alcids (Charadriiformes: Alcidae) from the North Pacific region (Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and Chukchi Sea): horned puffin, Fratercula corniculuta; tufted puffin, Lunda cirrhuta; parakeet auklet, Cvclorrhvnchus psittacula, and least auklet, Aethia pusilla; and from the western North Atlantic Ocean, (Gulf of St. Lawrence): razorbill, Alca torda. Pseudogymnophallus is distinguished from other genera of Gymnophallidae by the intertesticular position of the ovary; a cylindrical, undivided seminal vesicle; and by an intestinal diverticulum dorsal to the arch of each cecum.

The Short Happy Thesis Of G. Thomas Tanselle, Don L. Cook

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

You will be relieved to know that the sheaf of pages I hold in my hand does not constitute the paper I intend to inflict upon you this morning. It is instead a Xerox copy of Tom Tanselle's article "The Editing of Historical Documents" as it appeared in the 1978 volume of Studies in Bibliography. I display it in this way for two contrasting reasons. First, it provides the physical evidence of one salient fact of Tom's critical scholarship. That is, when he writes on a topic he writes on all of it. There is an encyclopedic quality to his …

Vengeance And Mercy: Implications Of Psychoanalytic Theory For The Retributive Theory Of Punishment, Kent A. Wilson

Nebraska Law Review

This article extends the merger of law and social science to the areas of retribution and criminal punishment. More specifically, it examines the concept of retribution from historical, philosophical, and psychological points of view. The goal is to develop an integrated concept of retribution, and to discern variables that psychological theory and research indicate are relevant to legal theories and practices in the area of retributive punishment.

A Time For Change: A Critical Analysis Of The Nebraska Administrative Procedure Act, Steven L. Willborn Jan 1981

A Time For Change: A Critical Analysis Of The Nebraska Administrative Procedure Act, Steven L. Willborn

Nebraska Law Review

This article is a critical analysis of the Nebraska Administrative Procedure Act (APA). The analysis demonstrates that the Act has been rendered obsolete. This obsolescence is not accounted for solely by tho existence of legislative indecision or by the legislature's ill-advised decisions over the past thirty-six years, although those have certainly been contributing factors. In addition, Nebraska's administrative superstructure has greatly increased in size and complexity since 1945; there has been considerable experience at the state legislative level with administrative procedures; and there has been a veritable explosion of scholarly work in the area. The time for change is at …

Factors Affecting Insecticide-Induced Resurgence Of The Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata Lugens On Rice, S. Chelliah, E. A. Heinrichs Dec 1980

Factors Affecting Insecticide-Induced Resurgence Of The Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata Lugens On Rice, S. Chelliah, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Resurgence of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) on rice was induced by applications of decamethrin, methyl parathion, and diazinon. Differential mortality of predators and hoppers did not appear to be the primary factor for resurgence. Hoppers appeared to be attracted to methyl parathion and decamethrin treated plants because of plant growth. Improved plant growth, however, did not compensate for the increased feeding of the insecticide-treated hopper population, and plants treated with resurgence-causing insecticides succumbed to feeding injury earlier than untreated plants. Population increases were due in part to stimulation of reproduction of the hopper, either by contact action of …

The Impact Of Moral Theories On Cheating: Studies Of Emotion Attribution And Schema Activation, Richard A. Dienstbier, Lynn R. Kahle, Keith A. Willis, Gilbert B. Tunnell Sep 1980

The Impact Of Moral Theories On Cheating: Studies Of Emotion Attribution And Schema Activation, Richard A. Dienstbier, Lynn R. Kahle, Keith A. Willis, Gilbert B. Tunnell

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This research series began as a test of an emotion-attribution approach to moral behavior. However, in the early studies, college students who read about morality were subsequently more likely to cheat on a vocabulary test than were control subjects who read materials irrelevant to morality. We hypothesized that resentment toward the test constructors interacted with the moral schemas activated by the reading task. To reduce resentment, in Study III the vocabulary test was presented as the experimenter's doctoral research. As predicted, compared to controls, those subjects who read about morality cheated less. Study IV was a quasi-experiment that confirmed the …

The Wpa Federal Writers' Project In Nebraska, Richard C. Witt Aug 1980

The Wpa Federal Writers' Project In Nebraska, Richard C. Witt

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Economic conditions during the 1930s caused unprecedented problems for the American people. The most obvious feature of the Depression--high unemployment--was particularly discouraging since no group of workers was spared from the realities of hard times. After experiencing relatively prosperous and comfortable lives during the Twenties, thousands of professionals and service personnel joined blue-collar workers in soup lines and charity programs.

This study concerns itself with one response the federal government made to deal with jobless white-collar personnel during the depression decade. As part of the Works Progress Administration's program to hire unemployed persons in the fields of art, music, theater, …

Focusing Faculty Development: Targeting, John Sharpham, Lanny Morreau

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Faculty development programs usually provide a variety of services for interested faculty. Much of what is provided is stressed as a service, available on a walk-in, voluntary basis, and tends to be focused on the university faculty as a whole. This approach requires the faculty to be initiators, asking them to avail themselves of the services available, and therefore supports active, self-motivated teachers. Centra's findings on faculty development practices underlined this when he identified "... teachers who wanted to get better" as the group "most involved, while those needed improvement were seen as least involved" (1976, p. 29).

Also, the …

Using A Content / Behavior Matrix In The Instructional Planning Process, Michael Koffman Apr 1980

Using A Content / Behavior Matrix In The Instructional Planning Process, Michael Koffman

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

Instruction is more likely to be successful when the instructor is clear about his/her goals. Upon this axiom, a large number of instructional practices are based. One derivative of this axiom is the following: instruction is more likely to be efficient and effective when the instructor can state his/her instructional goals in clear behavioral objectives. To further clarify the instructor's goals, one might undertake a task analysis, job analysis, content analysis, an analysis of competencies, a needs analysis and/or a learning hierarchy. The results of such "front-end" analyses are usually displayed in the form of page after page of goals, …

Sarcocystis Of Passerine Birds: Sexual Stages In The Opossum (Didelphis Virginiana), Edith D. Box, Donald W. Duszynski Apr 1980

Sarcocystis Of Passerine Birds: Sexual Stages In The Opossum (Didelphis Virginiana), Edith D. Box, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Sexual stages of a Sarcocystis of passerine birds were demonstrated by feeding muscle cysts from cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and grackles (Cassidix mexicanus) to opossums (Didelphis virginiana). Opossums were examined at necropsy at 36 h, 13.5 days, and 29.5 days post-inoculation (PI). Large numbers of macro- and microgamonts were present in the small intestine 36 h PI, while only sporocysts and oocysts were present 13 days or more PI. Microgamonts in different stages of development were in the intestinal epithelium above the nucleus and macrogamonts were at the base of the epithelial cells or in …

An Ecological Strategy For Controlling Bovine Rabies Through Elimination Of Vampire Bats, Rexford D. Lord Mar 1980

An Ecological Strategy For Controlling Bovine Rabies Through Elimination Of Vampire Bats, Rexford D. Lord

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 9th (1980)

Because of the limited resources of most Latin American countries, an ecological strategy for controlling bovine rabies through elimination of vampire bats is proposed instead of attempting total eradication. The strategy is essentially a combination of one or more of the anticoagulant control techniques applied with knowledge of the epizootiology of vampire rabies. Since rabies outbreaks in vampire bats are migratory, each outbreak is studied to determine the direction and velocity of its course, then an area is selected in its path where vampires are eliminated, forming a barrier and resulting in elimination of the outbreak.

Take A Beetle To Lunch Today Or The Natural History Of Dung Beetles, Brett C. Ratcliffe Jan 1980

Take A Beetle To Lunch Today Or The Natural History Of Dung Beetles, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

The appellation "dung beetles" refers to those scarab beetles that are usually found with animal feces either feeding on or depositing eggs in it. While this at first may seem like an incredibly unsavory topic, the fact remains that numerous creatures exist that feed on the waste products of other animals. And, as it turns out, it's a good thing they do.

The Scarabaeidae, or scarabs, is one of the larger families of beetles; it has 30,000 plus species worldwide and approximately 15,000 species in North America. (See my Museum Notes of March 1970.) The family is divided into subfamilies …

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1980

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. Some years later the census of 1890 revealed that in North Dakota, for example, 42.7 percent of the population of that newly admitted …

Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1980

Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …
