A Cancer Of Environmental And Occupational Etiology And A Thigh Tumor Described By Sir Percivall Pott In The Eighteenth Century, Anne J. Krush
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Percivall Pott was born in London, England 26 December 1713. His father died when he was four, leaving Mrs. Pott with Percivall and a daughter by a previous marriage. Pott's education was thereafter financed by one of Mrs. Pott's cousins, Dr. Wilco x, Bishop of Roches· ter. Although Pott became proficient in classical literature, and although Dr. Wilcox hoped that he would choose a career in theology, he chose a career in surgery instead and was bound as an apprentice to Dr. Nourse, a surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1729. He spent 58 years at this hospital, resigning from …

José and I would sit together at a table (generally in his kitchen), each of us with a copy of Vallejo-our stump. Although in our case as translators, we were only sometimes talking around Vallejo-more often, we were talking through or with him, as if he were participant as well as obstacle. But Kelly's sense of «the shared preoccupation» leading to meaningful talk holds as a metaphor for our relationship through Vallejo. The often insurmountable difficulties of his text brought about a kind of mountain-climbing friendship. In a magical way, a heart to heart conversation, in fits and starts, before, …

Spanish Language and Literature Papers
Since the appearance in 1948 of H. Chonon Berkowitz's PioneeringPerez Galdós: Spanish Liberal Crusader, researchers have slowly been adding new facts to our knowledge of Galdós's life. But measured against major gaps in Berkowitz's information and questionable assumptions he made about Galdós, progress since 1948 towards compiling a reliable and comprehensive corpus of biographical information has been disappointing.

The Effect Of Flanking Context On Visual Classification: The Joint Contribution Of Interactions At Different Processing Levels, John H. Flowers, Noreen Wilcox
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Flanking characters that surround a target character may cause either facilitation of or interference with target classification, depending on experimental context. In three different experiments, the patterns of facilitative priming and interference were shown to change systematically as a function of onset asynchrony between flankers and target, illustrating differing time courses of the overlapping processes that each contributes to overall reaction time performance.

The Ecology Of Mutualism, Douglas H. Boucher, Sam James, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Elementary ecology texts tell us that organisms interact in three fundamen tal ways, generally given the names competition, predation, and mutualism. The third member has gotten short shrift (264), and even its name is not generally agreed on. Terms that may be considered synonyms, in whole or part, are symbiosis, commensalism, cooperation, protocooperation, mutual aid, facilitation, reciprocal altruism, and entraide. We use the term mutualism, defined as "an interaction between species that is beneficial to both," since it has both historical priority (311) and general currency. Symbiosis is "the living together of two organisms in close association," and …

Bird-Vectored Diseases, P.M. Gough, J.W. Beyer
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Although property damage and losses can be inflicted by wild birds throughout the entire year, avian-vectored diseases of livestock are primarily a winter phenomenon in the Great Plains states. Reasons for this include the following: (1) During the winter season the birds congregate in flocks of sufficient size to be of epidemiologic significance. (2) There is a high degree of interaction between birds and livestock only when limited food induces the birds to forage among confined animals and when adverse weather forces the birds to seek shelter in housing units for livestock. (3) Colder temperatures increase the time of survival …
L:Egal Problems Of Bird Damage Control - Protected Species And Practical Solutions, Ronald D. Ogden
L:Egal Problems Of Bird Damage Control - Protected Species And Practical Solutions, Ronald D. Ogden
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Legal problems in bird damage control can occur from two directions. First, most birds are protected by federal law; all birds are protected by some states and all birds can be protected by local governing agencies. Second, the method of control may be restricted by state or local governments. Some states require permits to use toxicants; shooting is prohibited in some areas by local government. The only practical solution is to know the federal and state regulations pertaining to each individual project and to check each time with local agencies for further restrictions. A federal permit is required to trap …

Outwitting The House Sparrow [Passer Domesticus (Linnaeus)], William D. Fitzwater
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
With the decline of house sparrow populations during the first quarter of this century, control research attention shifted to other avian species so little new is available on either life history studies or management. Solutions to animal damage control problems are generally through (1) environmental controls, (2) protection of crops and/or sites, and (3) population reduction. In the case of sparrow problems, environmental controls are of limited application as the birds prefer the habitat modifications made by man. Protection of crops or sites relies on repellents which are generally ineffective against this particular species. The only viable population level controls …

Review Of Ho For California! Women's Overland Diaries From The Huntington Library Edited And Annotated By Sandra L. Myres, Merrill J. Mattes
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Huntington Library, located in an exclusive suburb of Pasadena, is less famous than the Rose Bowl and is probably even less wellknown than its companion, the marvelous Huntington Botanical Gardens. In the scholarly world of English literature and American history, however, the Huntington Library is distinguished for its collection of rare books and manuscripts, which place it among the foremost research libraries in the world. Included in its collections are more than 150 original manuscript diaries and letters of persons who traveled from "the States" to the Pacific Coast before the railroad revolution. From them Sandra Myres has selected …
The New Rural History: Defining The Parameters, Robert P. Swierenga
The New Rural History: Defining The Parameters, Robert P. Swierenga
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the last ten years the "new social history" and its stepchild the "new urban history" have become the dominant sub field s within the history discipline; but the "new rural history" remains an orphan child with little recognized place as yet in academic curricula or historical writings.1 Unlike urban history, which is studied as a coherent whole, aspects of rural history are usually discussed under such rubrics as the westward movement, agricultural history, land history, frontier development, Indian history, and so forth.
The implicit assumption behind this disjointed scholarly perception is that rural history is an incongruity in …
The Immigrant Church As A Symbol Of Community And Place In The Upper Midwest, Robert C. Ostergren
The Immigrant Church As A Symbol Of Community And Place In The Upper Midwest, Robert C. Ostergren
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
There can be little doubt that the church as an institution played a major role in the organization and development of community on nineteenth-century American frontiers, especially in the Middle West. Zealous missionary activity was characteristic of American Protestantism in the nineteenth century, and a good portion of that effort was expended on midwestern frontier populations. Thus the region emerged as a locus of fierce competition between the established American denominations. In addition, the Midwest was fertile ground for the establishment of new denominations. Many who settled the region were immigrants who came directly from Europe. Their uprooting severed ties …

Review Of The Explorations Of The La Verendryes In The Northern Plains, 1738-43 By G. Hubert Smith, Abraham P. Nasatir
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The La Verendrye family, father and sons, took an active part during the 1730s and 1740s in the movement of the French from Canada toward the West in the interest of the Indian fur trade, international rivalry, and the search for the Western Sea. Excellent fur traders and explorers, they moved south and west from their headquarters north of Lake Superior and pushed the line of French-Canadian posts toward the Rocky Mountains. They were the first Europeans to explore the northern plains area and to leave a record of their passage.
In 1950 the National Park Service appointed G. Hubert …

Review Of The Czechs In Oklahoma By Karel D. Bicha, Bruce M. Garver
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This booklet, one of ten in the Newcomers in a New Land series, not only addresses a popular audience but offers scholars some new information and a thoughtful examination of many aspects of the Czech-American experience in Oklahoma. Recognizing the typical American reader's unfamiliarity with the history of Czechs in Europe and the United States, Karel Bicha of Marquette University devotes the first two of his nine chapters to a survey of that history. The third chapter, organized chronologically, tells how several thousand Czechs settled in Oklahoma from 1889 to 1910. Each of the next four chapters is organized topically …
Beyond The Borderlands: Mexican Labor In The Central Plains, 1900-1930, Michael M. Smith
Beyond The Borderlands: Mexican Labor In The Central Plains, 1900-1930, Michael M. Smith
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The northern and central plains states, lying well beyond the Spanish borderlands and containing no great urban metropolises, have received scant attention in published studies of Mexican migration to and Mexican labor in the United States. Although this region did not attract Mexican immigrants in large numbers, compared to California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado and such cities as Chicago or Detroit, there was a dramatic increase in the number of Mexican immigrants to the plains states between 1900 and 1930. These persons filled a vital, yet generally ignored, role in the economic life of the region.1

Rocks cropping out along the North Platte River valley at Lake McConaughy provide a glimpse into Nebraska's geologic past. Here are excellent exposures of the Ogallala Group, which consists of continental sedimentary rocks deposited during the Miocene epoch of the Tertiary period of geologic time. This group of rocks extends throughout much of Nebraska (see geologic bedrock map on outside back cover) but is overlain in most places by younger stream and wind deposits of Pliocene(?) and Pleistocene age. Easily accessible, the Ogallala outcrops contain locally abundant fossils of seeds, casts of pedotubules, and occasional fossils of vertebrate animals such …

Social Roles And Moral Reasoning: A Case Study In A Rural African Community, Sara Harkness, Carolyn P. Edwards, Charles Super
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
This study explores relationships among moral reasoning (as measured by the Kohlberg scale of moral development), social roles, and cultural context among the elders in a small, traditional Kipsigis community of western Kenya. Six traditional leaders—men who were considered morally outstanding by their neighbors and who were frequently called on to help settle local disputes—were interviewed, using an adapted version of the Kohlberg moral dilemmas; six men who were similar to the leaders in age, education, religion, and wealth but who were not considered moral leaders were also interviewed. The leaders scored slightly but significantly higher than the nonleaders on …

Friends And Allies: The Tonkawa Indians And The Anglo-Americans, 1823-1884, Thomas W. Dunlay
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Historical models of Indian-white contact on the frontier emphasize conflict and hostility, yet historians are not unaware that whites and Indians interacted in many different ways in different regions and time periods. Even in cases of Indian-white conflict, it was not at all uncommon to find Indians fighting beside the whites against other Indians, often greatly enhancing the capabilities of the white forces. Some tribes were notable for their long-standing alliance with whites against other Indian tribes; examples include the Catawbas of South Carolina, the Pawnees of Nebraska, the Wyoming Shoshonis led by Chief Washakie, and the Crows of Montana. …

Review Of The British And Irish In Oklahoma By Patrick J. Blessing, Wilbur S. Shepperson
Review Of The British And Irish In Oklahoma By Patrick J. Blessing, Wilbur S. Shepperson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
To suggest accurately the impact of the British-Irish immigration on Oklahoma is a difficult and perhaps an impossible task. Eighteenth-century Americans were primarily of British-Irish stock, and the immigration movement increased throughout the nineteenth century. Between 1815 and 1914 some 14 million persons from the United Kingdom arrived in the United States. The British-Irish were also the most heterogeneous of all immigrant groups. They rarely cooperated in attempting American settlement, and their speech, culture, and ideology have rendered them the most difficult nationality to isolate and study historically. As a whole, migrants from the United Kingdom found immigration a less …
Review Of Folklore From Kansas: Customs, Beliefs, And Superstitions By William E. Koch, Roger L. Welsch
Review Of Folklore From Kansas: Customs, Beliefs, And Superstitions By William E. Koch, Roger L. Welsch
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The labor that Bill Koch has put into this volume is heroic. For those of us who study the plains, it is truly a valuable contribution. There are more than five thousand items, maps, tables, charts, and an astonishing inventory of collectors and informants. Each item is documented by sex, age, urban-rural orientation of the informant, and the year the item was collected. I am delighted that this impressive corpus has been made available to us. There is no question but that scholars will long be grateful to Koch for his effort.
Now, anyone who reads book reviews regularly knows …

A Landowner's Guide To Woodcock Management In The Northeast, Greg F. Sepik, Ray B. Owen Jr, Malcom W. Coulter, Howard L. Mendall
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Preface
The American woodcock holds a special place among birds of eastern North America. The woodcock’s unique courtship performance has made it a favorite of bird watchers. Also, its tendency to remain immobile or “freeze” in time of danger has made it a favorite of sportsmen who seek their quarry with highly trained pointing dogs.
For nearly five decades wildlife biologists have studied the life history of the woodcock and the factors affecting its welfare. The ultimate aim has been to insure that woodcock can be maintained in adequate numbers, in the face of increasing human demands on natural resources, …
