Biochemical Changes During The Growth Of Fungi: I. Nitrogen Compounds And Carbohydrate Changes In Penicillium Atrovenetum, David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten Jul 1964

Biochemical Changes During The Growth Of Fungi: I. Nitrogen Compounds And Carbohydrate Changes In Penicillium Atrovenetum, David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Changes in the biochemical constituents of cells were studied during the growth and development of Penicillium atrovenetum. Growth of the fungus, as measured by the dry weight, could be divided into four phases: lag, log, stationary, and death. The percentages of total nitrogen, cold trichloroacetic acid-soluble nitrogen, ribonucleic acid (RNA), and protein increased to a maximum during the lag phase, and subsequently decreased as the fungus aged. The percentage of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was always slightly higher in the spores than in the mycelium. The DNA in the mycelium decreased in the lag phase, and then increased slightly to …

Phytotoxic Substances From Soil Microorganisms And Crop Residues, T.M. Mccalla, F.A. Haskins Jun 1964

Phytotoxic Substances From Soil Microorganisms And Crop Residues, T.M. Mccalla, F.A. Haskins

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The role of organic matter in the growth of plants has been a subject of much investigation and controversy since the sixteenth century. During the early era, decomposition of plant residues and green and animal manures provided a primary source of minerals for plant growth. In addition, beneficial effects on soil structure and water-holding capacity were attribute to the presence of organic matter. With the development of agricultural chemistry culminating in the work of Liebig in the nineteenth century, it was discovered that plants could make satisfactory growth in the absence of added organic matter if suitable kinds and amounts …

Paleoecology Of Pseudozaphentoides Verticillatus (Barbour) In The Plattsmouth Limestone (Pennsylvanian), Robert Francis Diffendal Jr. Jun 1964

Paleoecology Of Pseudozaphentoides Verticillatus (Barbour) In The Plattsmouth Limestone (Pennsylvanian), Robert Francis Diffendal Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The purpose of this paper is to (1) delineate precisely the exact areal distribution and stratigraphic position within the Plattsmouth limestone member of any occurrence of Pseudozaphrentoides verticillatus (Barbour) and (2) to study the abiotic and biotic aspects of the Plattsmouth limestone in order to offer some inferences as to the paleoecological significance of these occurrences.

The Plattsmouth limestone in Nebraska is exposed in numerous quarries along the sides of the Weeping Water valley and along the Missouri River bluffs from Plattsmouth, Nebraska south to the Queen Hill quarry. Within the Plattsmouth, corals rapidly diminish in number away from the …

Sound In Vertebrate Pest Control, Hubert Frings Mar 1964

Sound In Vertebrate Pest Control, Hubert Frings

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

The best known vertebrate pests, as the papers presented at this meeting show, are birds and mammals. Other vertebrates, however, may become pests also: sharks, lampreys, toads (they fall into swimming pools), geckos, tortoises and snakes, for example. Without considering them, however, the depredations by birds and mammals alone are so varied that no single method of pest control can ever be all-embracing. Certainly, no one would suggest that acoustical methods would be, but, with further study, acoustical pest control should be much more widely used. I hope to point out here the possibilities and a few realities in bio-acoustics …

The Role Of Pest Control Operators In Vertebrate Pest Control, Philip J. Spear Mar 1964

The Role Of Pest Control Operators In Vertebrate Pest Control, Philip J. Spear

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 2nd (1964)

The National Pest Control Association, which I represent, accepts for membership those persons or firms which are actively engaged in the performance of structural pest control services for hire to the public at large and which are in sympathy with the purposes of the Association. The pest control operator in this context might be called a commercial pest control operator to distinguish him from those doing similar work but who are employed by governmental agencies or within large commercial organizations. Pest control is a growing industry with a gross annual income of 300-350 million dollars. It is estimated to contain …

Comparative Behavior And Relationships Of The Eiders, Paul A. Johnsgard Mar 1964

Comparative Behavior And Relationships Of The Eiders, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

Pair-forming and copulatory displays of the four species of eiders are described and illustrated, based on observations of captive and wild specimens. Behavioral differences indicate that two genera (Polysticta and Somateria) of eiders should be recognized, and that Lamponetta should be considered a synonym of Somateria. Racial differences in the displays of Somateria mollissima mollissima and S. m. v. nigra are explained on the basis of sympatry between the latter and S. fischeri, producing selection for display divergence that has not affected S. m. mollissima. Similarities in the behavior patterns of the eiders and the …

Special Text 12-160, Effective Army Writing, 1964, Us Army Adjutant General School, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Army: Training Documents

This a useful manual for writing of all types. The guide to research in an appendix is sensible. The “watchlist” is a good guide to avoiding Pentagonese. The author of this text had a sense of humor.

One unusual feature of the text is that the manual contains instructions for writing a staff study and a sample of a model staff study.

Comparative Behavior And Relationships Of The Eiders, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1964

Comparative Behavior And Relationships Of The Eiders, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

One of the more controversial systematic problems existing in the family Anatidae concerns the taxonomic rank and evolutionary relationships of the four species of eiders, which are currently considered by the American Ornithologists’ Union (1957) to comprise three genera (Somateria, Lampronetta, and Polysticta) in the diving duck subfamily Aythyinae. In 1945, however, Delacour and Mayr included the eiders in a single genus (Somateria) within the sea duck tribe Mergini. At present, Delacour (1959) considers the eiders a separate tribe, Somateriini, distinct from the other sea ducks, and placed near the dabbling duck tribe Anatini. The erection …

Documents Of Title Under The Uniform Commercial Code—Article 7, Daniel Stubbs Jan 1964

Documents Of Title Under The Uniform Commercial Code—Article 7, Daniel Stubbs

Nebraska Law Review

Article 7 of the Uniform Commercial Code relates to documents of title in the area covered by the Uniform Warehouse Receipts Act, the Uniform Bills of Lading Act, and that part of the Uniform Sales Act dealing with documents of title. A substantial caveat is important. Section 7-103 excludes from the operation of the Act two substantial areas: (1) It does not apply where federal law is paramount, and (2) excludes matters controlled by state regulatory statutes and the tariffs, regulations, and classifications issued pursuant to them. A document of title is first, a receipt for the goods by the …

Scope Of Governor's Call As Constitutional Limitation On Business Of Special Session Of The Legislature, John E. Musselman Jan 1964

Scope Of Governor's Call As Constitutional Limitation On Business Of Special Session Of The Legislature, John E. Musselman

Nebraska Law Review

The years since World War II have been characterized by a mounting pressure on state legislatures to produce solutions to difficult problems on a moment's notice. One manifestation of this increased pressure has been a rise in the frequency of legislative special sessions called by the governor. The fact that states have been forced to turn to this device with some regularity in recent years makes appropriate the consideration of a state constitutional problem peculiar to the operation of a special session: the permissible scope of legislative business at special sessions.

I. Introduction

II. “Tests” of Validity under the Call …

The Reapportionment Cases: A Conservative Defense Of Individual Rights, Wallace M. Rudolph Jan 1964

The Reapportionment Cases: A Conservative Defense Of Individual Rights, Wallace M. Rudolph

Nebraska Law Review

The latest pronouncement of the Supreme Court in the reapportionment cases will be greeted by legal and political commentators as an example of a further usurpation of states rights by the Supreme Court. It will be shown, however, that (1) the decision was required by the equal protection clause, (2) the decision was foreordained by use of the equal protection clause, (3) the Court was not imposing its own views of political theory when it upheld the civil liberties of individuals and limited the power of political majorities, and (4) the decision will not destroy initiative or local individuality but …

Relevancy In Federal Criminal Evidence, Lester B. Orfield Jan 1964

Relevancy In Federal Criminal Evidence, Lester B. Orfield

Nebraska Law Review

It is an easy matter to state that evidence must be relevant. And it is easy to define relevancy in terms such as "prove or disprove," "probable inference," "logical as well as legal," and "pointing with compelling force." But the application of a test or test for relevant evidence is not a matter of definition and black letter law. When dealing with rules of evidence it is undeniable that "each case turns on its own facts." This article is devoted to an analysis of relevant evidence in federal criminal cases.

I. In General—The Test of Relevancy … Remoteness … Harmless …

The Nebraska Uniform Commercial Code: Article 6—Bulk Transfers, Rodney Shkolnick Jan 1964

The Nebraska Uniform Commercial Code: Article 6—Bulk Transfers, Rodney Shkolnick

Nebraska Law Review

Bulk sales legislation arose out of an attempt to protect the creditors of merchants who would sell their stock in trade and either squander or secrete the proceeds. Under the normal rules relating to fraudulent conveyances, the creditor could pursue the property transfixed if he could show that the transfer was made with the intent to hinder, delay, or defraud creditors, and that the transferee had knowledge of the transferor's design. However, since a creditor would not be entitled to relief if the transferee was an innocent purchaser for an adequate consideration, and it generally would be difficult to prove …

The Nebraska Uniform Commercial Code: An Introduction And Articles 1 And 2, William B. Davenport Jan 1964

The Nebraska Uniform Commercial Code: An Introduction And Articles 1 And 2, William B. Davenport

Nebraska Law Review

On July 5, 1963, the development of commercial law in Nebraska received a gigantic forward thrust—a thrust necessary to bring that development even with the jet age. On that date Governor Frank Morrison approved Legislative Bill No. 49 of the 73rd Session of the Nebraska Legislature enacting the Uniform Commercial Code. In one sweep of the pen, Nebraska had law (or would, in September 1965, have law) in areas where none has existed previously—either in statutory or decisional form, law which it had taken even the most important commercial states and the British common law jurisdictions hundreds of years to …

Article 9 Of The Uniform Commercial Code As It Relates To Secured Transactions In Which The Collateral Is Consumer Goods Or Equipment, Jerrold L. Strasheim Jan 1964

Article 9 Of The Uniform Commercial Code As It Relates To Secured Transactions In Which The Collateral Is Consumer Goods Or Equipment, Jerrold L. Strasheim

Nebraska Law Review

The Uniform Commercial Code becomes operative in Nebraska at midnight on September 1, 1965. From that time, Article 9 of the Code—the Article on Secured Transactions—will regulate, regardless of its form, practically any transaction within the jurisdiction of the State in which the intention is to create a security interest in personal property or fixtures. The purpose of this paper is to delineate and explain the rules of Article 9 which apply to and regulate transactions intended to create security interests in collateral which is either consumer goods or equipment.

Estate Tax—"Possession Or Enjoyment" Under 2036—O'Malley V. United States (F. Supp. 1963), Lloyd I. Hoppner Jan 1964

Estate Tax—"Possession Or Enjoyment" Under 2036—O'Malley V. United States (F. Supp. 1963), Lloyd I. Hoppner

Nebraska Law Review

As of yet the courts have not been faced squarely with the question of whether in the case of income-producing property, a retained "possession or enjoyment" is enough to tax it to one's estate under section 2036 of the Internal Revenue Code. Thus far there has either been no transfer of the property in question or the courts have found a retention of the "right to the income." It is inevitable, however, that the issue will one day have to be faced. The answer is not clear, but in looking at the reasons for the joint resolution that amended the …
