The Parasitic Worms Of Man And The Domestic Animals, Henry B. Ward
The Parasitic Worms Of Man And The Domestic Animals, Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
This article has been written for the general information of those engaged either on a large or on a small scale in stock raising in our own state particularly, and, while not intended to be a complete treatise on the subject, it includes references to those parasites which seem to be the most important or most likely to be found within our borders. The parasites of cattle, sheep, horse, hog, dog, cat, and man, which have many species in common, form the subject of this paper. The parasites of domestic fowl are, however, quite different from those considered here and …
The Asiatic Lung-Distome In The United States, Henry B. Ward
The Asiatic Lung-Distome In The United States, Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
In 1893 I reported the occurrence of the Asiatic distome in the lungs of a cat examined in Ann Arbor, Mich. This was the first reported find of this species on this continent, and the possibility of its being a permanent guest in this country was so serious that I urged a careful examination of all cases of lung-parasites in the domestic animals, with a view to ascertaining whether this might be an isolated instance, or whether the parasite was actually established within our land, for it is true that the Chinese, among whom the parasite is very common, regard …
The Food Supply Of The Fish In The Great Lakes, Henry B. Ward
The Food Supply Of The Fish In The Great Lakes, Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
When the early settlers made their homes along the shores of the Great Lakes, the waters of these inland seas teemed with fish. A cheap and apparently inexhaustible supply of food lay within easy reach, and they drew from it unstinted, nor was it strange that, with the increasing population and ever-widening means of communication, delicacies so tempting as the whitefish and lake trout were eagerly sought after in the markets of the neighboring cities, and that the ingenuity of generations of fishing folk was taxed to invent means of securing the fish-until finally, in the face of a growing …

The Vegetable Kingdom is in other words the plant world, or the aggregate of organisms called plants. It is co-ordinate with the animal kingdom, and these two include all forms of organic life on the earth. It is not possible to define precisely the line which separates the lower portions of these two kingdoms; we may therefore regard them as simply branches of one great group, inseparable below, but widely divergent above. In attempting to separate plants from animals the most we can do is to bring together those characters which separate the greater number of plants from animals, and …
On The Presence Of Distoma Westermanni In The United States, Henry B. Ward
On The Presence Of Distoma Westermanni In The United States, Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
Last June a piece of the lung of a cat was brought me for examination, as it contained some foreign bodies which were unknown to the finder. A cursory examination showed them to be Distomidae, and more careful study seemed to confirm the first impression that, in spite of a few slight differences, they were specimens of the Asiatic Distoma westermanni. Being somewhat in doubt and not having the literature at hand, I sent several to Dr. C. W. Stiles, helminthologist of the Bureau of Animal Industry at Washington, D. C., who wrote that there was no doubt in …

On The Parasites Of The Lake Fish: Notes On The Structure And Life History Of Distoma Opacum, N. Sp., Henry B. Ward
Studies from the University of Nebraska Zoological Laboratory
This work was done while a member of the scientific corps sent out by the Michigan Fish Commission to begin an investigation of the biological conditions in the Great Lakes. The work in 1893 was carried on at New Baltimore, on Lake St. Clair. My thanks are due to the Michigan Board of Fish Commissioners for the many conveniences placed at my disposal in carrying out the investigations on fish parasites, of which this is one result. To Professor J. E. Reighard, director of the party, I owe much for his interest and hearty cooperation in all matters pertaining to …

A New Habitat Of The Black-Throated Rock Swift, Micropus Melanoleucus, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
As curator of the museum, I have just procured for the State University of Nebraska a set of bird-skins prepared during the past summer, among which are five skins that must be of interest to ornithologists. They verify the discovery made by Professor Lawrence Bruner of the University of Nebraska, that the White-throated Rock Swift builds and breeds in the precipitous bluffs around Squaw Canon, Sioux Co., Nebraska, and, what is more likely, throughout the Pine Ridge regions, as Professor Bruner has observed them also at Crow Butte, near Crawford, Nebraska.
On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman
On Certain Facts And Principles In The Development Of Form In Literature, L. A. Sherman
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Some ten years or more ago, on first attempting to teach English Literature historically, I found my attention peculiarly drawn to the differences of form between the sentences of More, Hooker, Lyly, and other early prosaists, and of approved stylists in our own age. Here was clearly an organic and sustained development, yet without scientific recognition of a single fact or principle of change. It seemed that something might easily be done towards determining the course of an evolution so evident and remarkable. But I had, or believed I had, no leisure for serious study of the subject, and found …
On The Determination Of Specific Heat And Of Latent Heat Of Vaporization With The Vapor Calorimeter, Harold N. Allen
On The Determination Of Specific Heat And Of Latent Heat Of Vaporization With The Vapor Calorimeter, Harold N. Allen
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Joly, in 1886, and Bunsen, shortly afterwards, described two similar pieces of apparatus intended to determine the specific heat of substances by means of the condensation of water vapor upon them. The name given by Bunsen to this apparatus and adopted here is vapor calorimeter. Bunsen also intended his instrument to be used in the determination of the latent heat of vaporization of various liquids, and it is the object of the present paper to describe experiments testing the steam or vapor calorimeter in this direction. A rough experimental instrument was first constructed, combining to a certain extent the …
On The Color-Vocabulary Of Children, Harry K. Wolfe
On The Color-Vocabulary Of Children, Harry K. Wolfe
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
The very interesting investigations and discussions on the development of the color-sense in man, during historical times, have indirectly shown the deficiency of ancient languages in words for simple sensations. Even if the validity of the inference drawn by the original investigators is more than doubtful, their labor has not been in vain. In seeking evidence for the recent evolution of the sense of color, Gladstone, Geiger, and others have shown that few words denoting color are used in the earliest literature of several nations. Furthermore, most of the color-words found denote shades of red, orange, or yellow. Violet is …

Census of Hallucinations
May I ask for the publicity of your pages to aid me in procuring co-operation in a scientific investigation for which I am responsible? I refer to the "Census of Hallucinations," which was begun several years ago by the Society for Psychical Research, and of which the International Congress of Experimental Psychology at Paris, last summer, assumed the future responsibility, naming a committee in each country to carry on the work.
The object of the inquiry is twofold: lst, to get a mass of facts about hallucinations which may serve as a basis for a scientific study …
The Winnebago County (Iowa) Meteorites, George F. Kunz, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, Joseph Torrey Jr.
The Winnebago County (Iowa) Meteorites, George F. Kunz, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, Joseph Torrey Jr.
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
A remarkable meteor, or meteoric shower, passed over this State at 5.30 P.M., Friday, May 2. In spite of the brightness of the sun, shining at the time in a nearly cloudless sky, the light of the meteor was very noticeable. Its great size, powerful illumination, discharge of sparks, comet-like tail three to five degrees in length, and the great train of smoke which marked its course for a full ten minutes after its passage, made a strong and lasting impression on the minds of all who saw it. Unfortunately the clamor over an exciting game of ball prevented the …

The Corn-Stalk Disease In Cattle, Frank S. Billings

MORPHO-BIOLOGICAL CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN TWO OR MORE MICRO- ETIOLOGICAL ORGANISMS NOT SUFFICIENT GROUNDS FOR PRONOUNCING THE DISEASES WITH WHICH THEY ARE CONNECTED IDENTICAL. The details of this discussion will be found in my report on the swine-plague. It is necessary, however, to touch upon the essential points here also. As was there shown, Hueppe asserts that the European diseases previously mentioned as being caused by a member of this group of belted, ovoid germs, viz., the “ Huhne Cholera, Kaninchen Septikasmie, und Wild Seuche ’ ’ are all one and the same disease, because their micro-etiological organisms have the same form, …
Inoculation—Vaccination, Frank S. Billings
Inoculation—Vaccination, Frank S. Billings
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
When one comes to discuss this question with the members of the profession as he casually meets them, he is often surprised to find how uncertain and clouded the prevailing ideas are upon the subject. In fact, the majority of physicians do not seem to have any clear conception of the act connected with the words “ inoculation ” and “ vaccination.”

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Lincoln, Nebr. , September 19, 1888. Sir: Aside from a very limited number of species such as are always more or less injurious, the insect depredations in the State of Nebraska have been unusually few and light during the present year. Among these latter I will notice in brief the following as having attracted my attention at the time of their occurrence: Plum weevils (Conotrachelus nenuphar and Coccotorus scutellaria), the Codling Moth (Carpoeapsa pomonella), Cabbage butterflies (Pieris protodiee and P. rapai), the Army-worm (Leucania unipuncta), the Large Willow Saw-fly (Cimbex americana …

In 1855, John Brown went to Kansas “for the sole purpose of fighting if need be for liberty." He soon had occasion to teach the "Border Ruffians" that he could strike hard blows in behalf of free homes and an enslaved race. In repeated encounters, with a handful of men, he worsted the pro-slavery forces that came against him, and his success at the battle of Black .Tack, and Ossawatomie, and Lawrence made old John Brown of Ossawatomie, one of the foremost men of Kansas. The Missouri slave holders recognized him as the most vigorous and uncompromising of all their …

A Visit To Nebraska In 1662, James W. Savage
Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports
When, a few years since, a paper was read before this society,* containing some reasonable grounds for belief in the theory that Coronado, in his expedition to the mysterious kingdom of Quivira, reached the territory now embraced within the state of Nebraska, there was little foundation for an argument that the gallant and uxorious knight marched any considerable distance beyond its southern boundary. The relation of his patient and painstaking follower, Castaneda, and his own report, left him at the fortieth parallel of latitude, now the dividing line between the states of Kansas and Nebraska; and the only reason for …

Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports
Among the pioneers of this state entitled to honorable recognition, who assisted in the formation of its laws and the founding of its institutions, was E. H. Rogers. The subject of this sketch was the second son of a Methodist minister, and was born at Litchfield, Herkimer county, New York, January 12, 1830.
We have but few incidents of his early life. The meager compensation accorded to ministers generally seems to have taught him the necessity of care in the expenditure of money, and also that true happiness does not depend upon the possession of wealth. It is worthy of …

Notes On The Early Military History Of Nebraska, Edgar S. Dudley
Nebraska State Historical Society: Transactions and Reports
At the request of the secretary of the State Historical Society, Prof. Geo. E. Howard, I undertook recently to look up the military history of the state, hoping and expecting to find in the records of the state department, and especially in the adjutant general's office, all necessary data and information. But upon examination I find that, through lack .of appropriation for its proper maintenance, and for the care of the records, etc., it fails to supply what I expected, and any effort to obtain information as to the special service of Nebraska's citizens in the late war, beyond what …
