Nebraska Place-Names, Lilian Linder Fitzpatrick A.M. Jan 1925

Nebraska Place-Names, Lilian Linder Fitzpatrick A.M.

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

This study of Nebraska place-names is as exhaustive as I could make it. Nevertheless it is not wholly complete. There are a few town names in many counties concerning which I could obtain no accurate information. Hence they are not entered. There are other names concerning which my information is deficient despite my best efforts. Moreover Nebraska is a large state and new towns are constantly springing up, especially in the remoter counties. I would like to have the record for the state as complete as possible. Additional information and corrective or supplementary material, where these may be needed, will …

Xx. The Term "Communal", Louise Pound Jun 1924

Xx. The Term "Communal", Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I. The Doctrine of Communal Origins

The period following the French Revolution was deeply interested in "the people" as a mass conception, in all that belonged to them and all that they created. It was in this period that theorists on the origin of law, customs, religion, language, literature--particularly the folk-song and the folk-tale--liked to advocate the doctrine of spontaneous, unconscious growth "from the heart of the people," as the phrase went. Such conceptions of origin had their critics from the first; but they remained more or less orthodox throughout the nineteenth century, and they still have foothold in both …

The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es Sep 1923

The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

This casting out of a dead or at least abnormal fetus we call abortion. It constitutes the culminating accident in a process set into motion by disease or injury. To the breeder it is its most conspicuous feature, and it's more or less constant occurrence among live stock warrants us to speak of the abortion problem. It is the purpose of this publication to lay before our Nebraska breeders such information on the subject as can be gathered from the more recent literature and from observations in the field and the laboratory.

A Founder Of American Parasitology, Joseph Leidy, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

A biographical overview of American parasitologist Joseph Leidy and his work. bron September 9, 1823, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - died 1891.

Conclusion

A detailed study of his writing justifies the statement that no one has yet adequately presented or fully elucidated Leidy's contributions to helminthology and his writing will furnish rich lead to many future workers in this field. How monumental the task of preparing a record of the full life work of this extraordinary man who in the same breath as it were, in a single letter records discoveries of far reaching import on bacteria, amoebae, worms, and fossil …

Relation Of Environment And Other Factors To Potato Wilt Caused By Fusarium Oxysporum, R. W. Goss

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The present work was undertaken to determine the influence of some environmental factors on the infection and progress of the disease potato wilt. The work has not progressed to the point of determining the exact relation of each of these factors. However, the results thus far obtained are presented here in order to direct attention to the nature and distribution of the disease in relation to the environmental conditions under which certain types of infection take place.

Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith Jan 1923

Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Physiology and ecology depend for their constructive development largely upon the applications of physico-chemical concepts to living organisms and their environment, to their life processes, reactions, and interrelations. A concept is valuable biologically in so far as it can be applied and used as a tool for better understanding of the phenomena related to life. Ecology, as the study of the relations between organisms and their environment and of the interrelations of organisms, depends primarily upon the findings of physiology (Clements, 1905). But to apply physicochemical concepts and hence make them of value to the physiologist or ecologist commonly requires …

Poetic Origins And The Ballad, Louise Pound Jan 1921

Poetic Origins And The Ballad, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The leading theses of the present volume are that the following assumptions which have long dominated our thought upon the subject of poetic origins and the ballads should be given up, or at least should be seriously qualified; namely, belief in the "communal" authorship and ownership of primitive poetry; disbelief in the primitive artist; reference to the ballad as the earliest and most universal poetic form; belief in the origin of narrative songs in the dance, especially definition of the English and Scottish traditional ballad type as of dance origin; belief in the emergence of traditional ballads from the illiterate, …

Laureate Address Of John G. Neihardt Upon Official Notification Of His Choice As Poet Laureate Of Nebraska, John G. Neihardt Jan 1921

Laureate Address Of John G. Neihardt Upon Official Notification Of His Choice As Poet Laureate Of Nebraska, John G. Neihardt

Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State

I want to talk to you about the technique of Poetry and the relation of that art to education and the social process in general. In order that you may be able to judge as to the relevance of my remarks, I must first tell you what I understand by the word "education. "

Were the definition, that I hold, my own, I would not presume to offer it here; but I need only find the proper words with which to express the common opinion of many seers in many times and countries; and this, unfortunately, seems now to be …

The Embassy Of Everaard Van Weede, Lord Of Dykvelt, To England In 1687, James Muilenburg Jan 1920

The Embassy Of Everaard Van Weede, Lord Of Dykvelt, To England In 1687, James Muilenburg

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The importance of the embassy of Everaard van Weede, Lord of Dykvelt, to England in 1687, has been variously estimated by the many historians of the Revolution of 1688. Bishop Burnet, who played an important role in all the counsels of William and acted as the spiritual minister to Mary, speaks intimately of the whole affair. He gives an account of the mission which purports to be as he had it from the envoy himself. In Burnet's opinion the embassy may from one point of view be looked upon as a failure, for its ostensible objects were not attained. But …

America's Mission To Serve Humanity: (Wilson A Prophet, In A Line Of Prophets), Frank Moss Jan 1919

America's Mission To Serve Humanity: (Wilson A Prophet, In A Line Of Prophets), Frank Moss

Electronic Texts in American Studies

America's divinely-ordained mission is to serve humanity; Germany's ruler-imposed mission was to dominate mankind. America's galaxy of prophets culminates in the president, whose voice is heard throughout the earth; Germany's line of prophets crashes to ruin in the kaiser; "Deutchland ueber alles" has become a dirge, but rescued peoples are singing "Sweet land of liberty."

This address shows that a continuous voice of prophecy has rung out from American leaders, from the nation's beginning to the present time, proclaiming the mission of America to Humanity, -- culminating in the tremendous movement of 1918-19, when she undertakes to save democracy, and …

Congenital Anomalies Of The Heart, C. W.M. Poynter Jan 1919

Congenital Anomalies Of The Heart, C. W.M. Poynter

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

For a number of years I have been studying the abnormalities of the circulatory system resulting from developmental disturbances. One paper relating to the aortic arches has already appeared, Poynter (1916), and in this one I shall confine myself to the anomalies of the heart. There are few subjects which have attracted more attention among the medical profession than the irregularities in the developmen~ of the heart and great vessels, but in the case of the heart the interest is not so much from the teratological side as in the case of the arteries; its developmental defects are frequently of …

Astronomical Lore In Chaucer, Florence M. Grimm Jan 1919

Astronomical Lore In Chaucer, Florence M. Grimm

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

The conspicuousness of astronomical lore in the poetry of Chaucer is due to its importance in the life of his century. In the mediaeval period, astronomy (or 'astrology,' for the two names were used indifferently to cover the same subject) was one of the vital interests of men. The ordinary man of the Middle Ages knew much more than do most men to-day about the phenomena of the heavens; conveniences such as clocks, almanacs, and charts representing celestial phenomena were rare, and direct observations of the apparent movements and the relative positions of the heavenly bodies were necessary for the …

The Supernatural In The Tragedies Of Euripides As Illustrated In Prayers, Curses, Oaths, Oracles, Prophecies, Dreams, And Visions, Ernest Heinrich Klotsche Jul 1918

The Supernatural In The Tragedies Of Euripides As Illustrated In Prayers, Curses, Oaths, Oracles, Prophecies, Dreams, And Visions, Ernest Heinrich Klotsche

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The spirit of the Greek drama is preeminently religious. Not only in its beginnings, hut throughout the most flourishing period of its history, it was in intimate connection with the supernatural which entered into its very heart, and constituted one of its essential elements. The theatrical representations at Athens, even in the days of Euripides and Aristophanes, were constituent parts of a great religious celebration. The presence of the supernatural element in Greek tragedy involved a definite attitude toward it on the part of each individual dramatist. The strength of personality which AEschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides possessed made them voice …

A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg Jan 1918

A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Recently G. C. Young and A. Denjoy have communicated theorems—those in Denjoy's memoir are of an especially comprehensive character—dealing, in particular, with point sets where the four derivatives of a given continuous function are identical. It is the purpose of this note to treat an analogous problem that arises when "derivative" is replaced by "saltus." However, instead of confining ourselves to "saltus," we prove a more general theorem that applies essentially to all semi-continuous functions. We preface the proof of this theorem with the following

Studies Of The Etiology And Control Of Blister Canker On Apple Trees, J. Ralph Cooper Dec 1917

Studies Of The Etiology And Control Of Blister Canker On Apple Trees, J. Ralph Cooper

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The blister canker caused by Nummularia discreta Tul. is by far the most destructive disease of apple trees found in the United States. Serious damage due to this disease was first reported in Illinois in 1902. Since that time the disease has been reported to cause much damage in all apple-producing sections east of the Rocky Mountains. In Nebraska the disease is so prevalent that it is practically impossible to find an orchard free from it, and in many instances whole orchards have been destroyed thru its attacks. Because of the rapid dissemination and the destructive nature of blister canker, …

The Meeting Of The Estates-General, 1789: The Union Of The Three Orders, June 24 To June 27, Jeanette Needham Apr 1917

The Meeting Of The Estates-General, 1789: The Union Of The Three Orders, June 24 To June 27, Jeanette Needham

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The calling of the estates-general for 1789 marked the culmination of a long and bitter struggle between the king and the privileged orders, caused chiefly by the financial embarrassment of the country. The victory over the king was the signal for.a still more bitter conflict between the third estate and the privileged classes over the organization of the estates-general. It was continued after the formal opening of the estates in May, 1789, under the guise of a new contest, over the manner of verifi€ation of credentials. Although outwardly but a matter of parliamentary procedure, this question in reality veiled that …
