The Basis Of College Recommendations On Orchard Mouse Control In New York, James W. Caslick Mar 1977

The Basis Of College Recommendations On Orchard Mouse Control In New York, James W. Caslick

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

We all depend heavily upon the advice of others, in making our day-to- day decisions. Months, and perhaps years, before the first ounce of a new rodenticide is used by an orchardist, a series of successful "convincings" must occur. A market analyst must convince his company that a new rodenticide is needed and that a suitable market exists. The company's researchers must convince management that their candidate rodenticide has potential worth exploring. Perhaps researchers outside the company then convince management that outside research services would be beneficial. Researchers must then convince regulatory agencies that the new rodenticide is effective against …

Ethnic Group Settlement On The Great Plains, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1977

Ethnic Group Settlement On The Great Plains, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The importance of foreign-born immigrants and their children for the settlement of the Great Plains has been largely overlooked by historians of the frontier and of the trans-Mississippi West. While an extensive literature exists treating Indian history and Indian-white relationships, white populations have usually been treated as homogeneous. In such a classic study as Walter Prescott Webb's The Great Plains, ethnic groups of European origin are scarcely mentioned. More recent interpretations of the region note differences between Indians, Chicanos, Orientals, and blacks, but fail to distinguish European ethnic groups, such as Norwegians, Germans, and Czechs from each other or from …

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1977

Issues Facing U.S. Farmers And Their Cooperatives, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to speak this morning to this dynamic group of young farm families. Those of .us who were actively involved in farming a few years back are continually amazed at the talent that has come along" to succeed us. Farming has indeed changed more than we realize. That is not a new discovery, for thousands of articles have been written about the technological revolution in agriculture. But relatively little attention has been given to the change in farm families themselves. without doubt, the quality level of young farmers and their wives - whether it be …

Eclipsing Systems In Star Structures. Iii. Early-Type Contact System Bh Centauri, Kam-Ching Leung, Donald P. Schneider

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Close to 1000 photoelectric observations of BH Cen in the yellow, blue, and ultraviolet regions were analyzed. The period found was 0.791616 days. The depths of minima were about equal, and were more than 1 magnitude! A photometric solution was derived with the Wilson and Devinney model. The binary is an overcontact system with primary and secondary masses equal to 10 M?. Based on its membership in IC 2944 and the size of the primary radius, BH Cen may be another example of a zero-age contact system.

Vibriosis In Fish, G. L. Bullock Jan 1977

Vibriosis In Fish, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Fish vibriosis is a systemic disease of marine, estuarine, and some freshwater fishes, caused by bacteria of the genus Vibrio (Ross et al. 1968, Ghittino et al. 1972). The disease has been known for centuries; outbreaks along the Italian coast were recorded as early as the 1500's. Terms such as "red pest," "red boil," "red plague," or "saltwater furunculosis" have been applied to vibrio infections, but vibriosis is a more specific term and is now used by most fishery workers. With the rapid development of mariculture, vibriosis has become a major cause of fish loss--sometimes to the extent of being …

Nesting By Ferruginous Hawks And Other Raptors On High Voltage Powerline Towers, David S. Gilmer, John M. Wiehe

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

High voltage powerlines form a spider-web pattern across North Dakota as they radiate outward from electric generating sources at Garrison Dam and nearby lignite-fired power plants. In 1976 there were approximately 1100 miles of high voltage powerline in the state, which required approximately 4500 large steel or aluminum towers for support (G. R. Anderson, personal communication). Moreover, officials of power cooperatives and privately-owned utilities anticipate the construction of over 900 additional miles of high voltage lines by 1981. As North Dakota coal resources are developed the powerline network will probably continue to grow.

Our interest in powerlines was stimulated several …

Argulus, A Branchiuran Parasite Of Freshwater Fishes, G. L. Hoffman Jan 1977

Argulus, A Branchiuran Parasite Of Freshwater Fishes, G. L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

"Fish lice" of the genus Argulus (suborder Branchiura) are Common parasites of freshwater fish, and may occur on frogs and salamanders. Argulids often cause severe mortality of fish in farm ponds, and sometimes in natural waters. Because information on life cycles, ecology, and host specificity is incomplete only a generalized account can be given.

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

This study investigated a wide range of water resource problems and opportunities related to the Missouri River and the six main stem dams along an area extending over 1.500 miles from Sioux City. Iowa to Three Forks. Montana. Subjects of the study were: the feasibility of installing additional hydro-power generating units both at the main stem dams and adjacent to the river; resolution of bank erosion, waterlogging, and residual flood problems; opportunities for recreation, fish and wildlife enhancement; operating plans of the main stem system considering future water use; and potential for extending navigation upstream from Sioux City. Iowa.

Wright Morris Photographs, Jane T. Anderson Jan 1977

Wright Morris Photographs, Jane T. Anderson

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

People do not appear in these photographs by Wright Morris, but they can be seen in the structures they built for living, working and worshiping, in the personal furnishings they collected to comfort their lives, in the pattern of their comings and goings marked by streets and sidewalks.
"It is my feeling that the absence of people in these photographs enhances their presence in the objects-the structures, the artifacts, even the landscape suggests its appropriate inhabitant."*

These vestiges of their existence tell more about the inhabitants than portrait photographs could. The artifacts in Eddie Cahow's Barbershop define Eddie …

G77-381 Suggestions For Making Family Farm And Ranch Operating Agreements Work, Philip A. Henderson Jan 1977

G77-381 Suggestions For Making Family Farm And Ranch Operating Agreements Work, Philip A. Henderson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Both parents and young people are interested in ways to help the younger generation get started in farming. The kinds of arrangements being used are many. No two are exactly alike. Families have different objectives; different resources are involved, and the relative contributions which involved parties make are unique to each family situation.

There are certain principles, however, that need to be recognized in every family farm or ranch operating agreement and they are discussed here in this NebGuide.

Climatic Change And The Initial Middle Missouri Tradition, David L. Cook Jan 1977

Climatic Change And The Initial Middle Missouri Tradition, David L. Cook

Nebraska Anthropologist

It has been postulated that a favorable climatic change occurs worldwide at approximately 900 A.D. At this same time, many cultures expanded and many cultures appeared for the first time, specifically the Initial Middle Missouri Variant in North and South Dakota. In this paper, I will try to demonstrate that a climatic change did occur worldwide, that cultures do respond and change to shifts in climate, and I will try to demonstrate the responses of certain cultures to the 900 A.D. climatic change. Specifically, I will try to show what may have happened to the Initial Middle Missouri culture area …

Channel Catfish Virus Disease, John A. Plumb Jan 1977

Channel Catfish Virus Disease, John A. Plumb

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Channel catfish virus disease (CCVD) is an acute infection of cultured fry and fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The causative agent is the channel catfish virus (CCV) , a member of the herpesvirus group. Since its first identification (Fijan 1968) the virus has been isolated from infected fish collected during epizootics at catfish hatcheries in the warmer latitudes of the United States. The disease is found primarily during the summer and, with a single known exception to date, in fish less than 4 months old. The virus has been isolated only from fish taken while an epizootic was …

Claude Levi-Strauss: The Man And His Works, Susan M. Voss

Nebraska Anthropologist

"Claude Levi-Strauss, Professor of Social Anthropology at the College de France, is, by common consent, the most distinguished exponent of this particular academic trade to be found anywhere outside the English speaking world... " (Leach 1970: 7)

With this in mind, I am still wondering how I came to be embroiled in an attempt not only to understand the multifaceted theorizing of Levi-Strauss myself, but to interpret even a portion of this wide inventory to my colleagues. There is much (the majority, perhaps) of Claude Levi-Strauss which eludes me yet. To quote Edmund Leach again, "The outstanding characteristic of his …

A Late Pleistocene-Holocene Vertebrate Fauna From Red Willow County, Nebraska, R. George Corner

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Wet gravel pits in Red Willow County, Nebraska have yielded numerous fossil bones from sediments ranging in composition from black peat to coarse gravels. Glaciations to the north and northeast and in alpine situations in the Rocky Mountains may have caused a unique fauna to range into the High Plains in what is now southwestern Nebraska. The mammals recovered consist of twenty-four species. Of these twelve are extinct and six others no longer occur in the area. Geographic ranges are extended for Sangamona, Rangifer tarandus, Symbos cavifrons, Ovibos moschatus, and Ovis catclawensis. Techniques of gravel …

A Linguistic View Of Habermas' Theory Of Communicative Competence, Elisabeth Leinfellner Jan 1977

A Linguistic View Of Habermas' Theory Of Communicative Competence, Elisabeth Leinfellner

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Habermas'view of language has been widely discussed in Europe and, to some extent, by rhetoricians and philosophers in the United States. Here we will present the linguistic point of view.

Habermas' theory is heavily influenced by concepts taken from hermeneutics and Habermas' own sociological views. For instance, Habermas uses his concept of "systematic distortion" (i.e. ideological distortion in a specific sense) and introduces it into the theory of communicative competence.

Habermas calls his view of language a "theory of communicative competence"; but even though he derives "competence" from Chomsky's "linguistic competence," the former's concept of competence is not to be …

Enargeia: A Concept For All Seasons, Dennis R. Bormann Jan 1977

Enargeia: A Concept For All Seasons, Dennis R. Bormann

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Aristotle, writing in the fourth century B.C., defined rhetoric as the "faculty of discovering in the particular case what are the available means of persuasion" (Aristotle, 1932, 1:2). He then proceeded to classify proofs intrinsic to the art of speaking into three modes-logos, ethos, and pathos. Consistent with his ''scientific'' point of view, he deplored writers of the arts of speaking who ignored argument; and his treatise emphasized the logical element in persuasion. As he said, persuasion is "effected by the arguments, when we demonstrate the truth, real or apparent, by such means as inhere in particular …

The Antiquity Of Bison Latifrons (Harlan) In The Great Plains Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, John M. Hillerud

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

There is abundant evidence available which strongly supports the Middle Pleistocene (Sheridanian) stratigraphic position of the fossilized remains of Bison latifrons (Harlan) in the Great Plains of North America. This would place the geologic age of this giant beast as post-Kansas to Early Illinoian. Fourteen localities, where the bones of B. latifrons have been found in the central part of North America, have been examined for stratigraphic and geomorphologic evidence.

The Methodological Principles Of Plato And Bergson, Mark C. Timmons

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Toward A Methodology For Auditing, Jack L. Krogstad Jan 1977

Toward A Methodology For Auditing, Jack L. Krogstad

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The nature and practice of auditing is described within the context of the social, economic, and political dynamics of the last 100 years. Auditing developed upon a predominantly pragmatic foundation. Within the last decade, auditing scholars such as Mautz, Sharaf, Silvoso, Newmann, and Carmichael have attempted to undergird auditing with theoretical substance. This attempt has been hampered by the absence of an appropriate methodology. Reflection suggests that for a discipline to reach maturity, it must embrace a methodology germane to its particular needs and activities. Efforts to find such a methodology have focused exclusively on the methods of the physical …
