Absolute Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Ejection Of Secondary Electrons From Gases By Electron Impact. Ii. 100-500-Ev Electrons On Neon, Argon, Molecular Hydrogen, And Molecular Nitrogen, R. D. Dubois, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
Absolute doubly differential cross sections for secondary electron production by electron impact have been measured for static gas targets of neon, argon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Electron impact energies were from 100 to 500 eV. An electrostatic analyzer was used to analyze secondary electrons with energies between 4 eV and the primary electron energy minus the first ionization potential of the target. Angles of emission were 10° to 150°. The present data agree well with the data of Opal, Beaty, and Peterson at 90° but, as was observed previously for helium, the agreement becomes increasingly poorer for larger and smaller angles. …

Models Of Corporate Conduct: From The Government Dominated Corporation To The Corporate Dominated Government, Thomas L. Hazen, Bren L. Buckley
Models Of Corporate Conduct: From The Government Dominated Corporation To The Corporate Dominated Government, Thomas L. Hazen, Bren L. Buckley
Nebraska Law Review
Since 1932 there has been scholarly discussion concerning the proper role of the private corporation in society and specifically whether or not the private business entity has social responsibilities. This article examines the views of selected corporate commentators concerning the proper scope, function, and structure of corporate regulation, with emphasis on the interests to be protected by each. Examination of the individual proposals is a necessary prerequisite to answering the more overriding question of whether there should be one unitary system of regulation as opposed to the motley system that now exists.

An Immunochemical Study Of The Combining Sites Of The Second Lectin Isolated From Bandeiraea Simplicifolia (Bs Ii), Charles Wood, E. A. Kabat, S. Ebisu, Irwin J. Goldstein
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Two lectins with different binding specificities have been isolated from extracts of seeds of Bandeiraea simplicifolia. The first, Bandeiraea lectin I [11] was specific for terminal non-reducing αDGalactosyl residues. It reacted with B substances from human ovarian cysts and with several galactomannans to form precipitin lines in agar gels. Polysaccharides with terminal αDGalactosyl residues, such as larch galactan, did not react. The lectin agglutinated B erythrocytes strongly but also reacted to a lower titre with A1 and very weakly with A2 erythrocytes [15, 28] indicating that terminal non-reducing αDGalNAc [24] can …

Unequal Lovers: A Study Of Unequal Couples In Northern Art, Alison G. Stewart
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
Love between the old and the young is a theme that has interested artists and audiences since antiquity, when Plautus (d. 184 B.C.), working after Greek originals, set down in writing the first representations of this theme that have come down to us.
The scope of this work is primarily the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, a period in which conditions were such that the Unequal Lovers theme attained a new popularity and was first depicted as an independent representation in the visual arts. This popularity was most pronounced in northern Europe, especially Germany, and it is this greatest period …

Specificity Of The Trail Pheromones Of Four Species Of Fire Ants, D. P. Jouvenaz, C. S. Lofgren, D. A. Carlson, W. A. Banks
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
The species specificity of trail pheromones of fire ants, Solenopsis spp., has been studied by Wilson (1962; Anim. Behav. 10: 137-47) and Barlin, Blum, and Brand (1976; J, Insect Physiol. 22: 839-44). Our study, stimulated by taxonomic advances since Wilson's work and conducted concurrently with that of Barlin et al., is presented here to confirm and supplement the latters' observations, and to report some differences in results.

Genetic Method For The Preferential Elimination Of Females Of Anopheles Albimanus, J. A. Seawright, P. E. Kaiser, D. A. Dame, C. S. Lofgren
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Recent field experiments demonstrated the possibility of using the sterile male method for the control of Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann, the most impor- tant vector of human malaria in Central America. Until now there was no practical method for excluding females from the releases of sterile males. A genetic method was developed for the preferential elimination of females during any of the four life stages. This genetic sexing system utilizes propoxur (o-isopropoxyphenyl methyl- carbamate) susceptibility as a recessive conditional lethal, a T(Y:2R) translocation, and an In(2R) inversion. The propoxur resistance allele (dominant) was linked to the Y chromosome via a radiation-induced …
Breeding For Increased Protein Content In Milk, L. Dale Van Vleck
Breeding For Increased Protein Content In Milk, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The principles of selection are reviewed as a basis for discussing selection for protein content of milk. The correlations among components of milk will cause correlated responses in all even when selection is for only one component. Selection for fractional composition of fat or protein would lead to increases in content of fat and protein, but the expected increases in total yields of fat and protein would be much less than if selection were for yield of milk, fat, or protein. Selection should be for milk, fat, and protein yield with relative economic emphasis determined by the net economic value …
A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager
A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager
Nebraska Anthropologist
This bibliography of anthropological serials in the University of Nebraska Libraries has been undertaken primarily for two reasons. The first follows from the incredibly diverse nature of the discipline itself, for the study of man and his origins has given rise to various methods of inquiry and interdisciplinary overlays. As Sol Tax has pointed out, the study of man appears to have no natural boundaries. It comes as little surprise, therefore, that the bibliography representing the published record of such a varied field of study should itself be extremely diffuse. Add to this natural diffusion the characteristic pattern of dispersed …

Protein Synthesis In Rabbit Reticulocytes: Characteristics Of A Ribosomal Factor That Reverses Inhibition Of Protein Synthesis In Heme-Deficient Lysates, R. O. Ralston, A. Das, A. Dasgupta, R. Roy, S. Palmieri, N. K. Gupta
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
A ribosomal salt (0.5 M KCI) wash factor (RF) that reverses inhibition of protein synthesis in heme-deficient reticulocyte lysates has been resolved from the bulk of Met-tRNAtmet- binding factor (EIF-1), Co-EIF-I, and EIF-2 (ternary complex dissociation factor, TDF). The purified RF restores protein synthesis activity of heme-deficient lysates to the level observed in the presence of hemin. No direct correlation exists between amount of EIF-i activity and ability to reverse inhibition of protein synthesis in heme-deficient lysates. Homogeneous preparations of EIF-i are completely inactive in reversal of protein synthesis inhibition in heme-deficient lysates. These findings suggest that …

1903 & 1946: The Making And Remaking Of The University Of Nebraska College Of Law, Carl Circo
Nebraska Law Review
Legal education at the University of Nebraska College of Law has undergone at least two significant upheavals. In rough terms, one can be associated with the deanship of Roscoe Pound from 1903 to 1907 and the other with the years 1946 to 1950 when Frederick Beutel was dean. Both periods presented fertile opportunity for educational reorganization. It is the thesis of this commentary that the two educational revisions, and their underlying philosophies, reflect clearly identifiable conclusions about the perceived purpose of a law school. This commentary first describes the chief characteristics of the educational process at the College of Law …
Eloquence In The Defense Of Deism: Voltaire’S Histoire De Jenni, Thomas M. Carr
Eloquence In The Defense Of Deism: Voltaire’S Histoire De Jenni, Thomas M. Carr
French Language and Literature Papers
In the Histoire de Jenni (1775), his last major conte, Voltaire returns to a pattern similar in many ways to the one he had used in his first important tale, Micromégas. In both, as Vivienne Mylne has pointed out, two discussion scenes—the first near the beginning of the tale and a second more substantial one—are set in a narrative frame involving a voyage. Critics have generally attributed this return to a structure relying heavily on debate to convey his message to Voltaire’s increasing use of the philosophical dialogue in his later years. Perhaps a more fruitful approach, however, …
A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor
A Simulation Model For Ring-Necked Pheasants, Melvin W. Taylor
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
One of the most important game birds in the United States is the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). This Asian refugee has provided recreation for untold numbers of sportsmen. Its presence has meant millions of dollars for state game agency coffers, not to mention its impact on local economies. Pheasant populations have fluctuated widely in past years, but the overall trend since the early 1960's has been downward over most of the pheasant range. This decline was caused primarily by loss of habitat due to change in agricultural land use (Mohlis 1974, Dahlgren 1963, Kobriger 1972, Taylor et al. …

Analysis Of The Flehmen Display In American Bison (Bison Bison), Brian R. Mahan, Michael P. Munger, Harvey L. Gunderson
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
A tota1 of 873 Flehmen (lip curl) displays by bison (Bison bison) was recorded and statistically analyzed in relation to individual factors such as age and sex, and external factors such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and Flehmen stimulus to determine if differences between subgroups of individuals existed and if Flehmen was environmentally affected. The mean lip curl display duration for all individuals was 8.4 seconds. Statistical tests of Flehmen duration means grouped by Flehmen stimuli showed a significant difference (p < 0.05). Lip curl duration means for males (8.3 sec.) and females (9.3 sec.), "maturity classes", all age-classes, cow age-classes, and bull age-classes were significantly different (p < 0.05). Because of a marked decrease of duration means for "prime" bulls, some relationship between Flehmen duration and sexual behavior of bulls was suggested. Windspeed, humidity, and temperature were determined …
Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko
Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Mycobacteria are widely distributed in nature. They are abundant in the soil, on the surface of plants, on the skin of vertebrates, in human food (e.g., milk and butter), and in animal feeds. Most mycobacteria are saprophytic, but some species are highly pathogenic and cause diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy in humans, and similar diseases in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.
Mycobacteria that cause diseases of fishes differ considerably from those that cause diseases in humans and other mammals. Therefore, to avoid association between tuberculosis in mammals and mycobacterial infections in fishes, it is better to call the …

An Examination Of The Male Sex Role Model In Prime Time Television Commercials, Renee Meyers
Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Theses, Student Research, and Creative Work
The purpose of this thesis is to examine male role models in prime time television commercials. The plan for the study is as follows: Chapter Two will review research on the importance of television to our society and its influence on the socialization process through which children and adults learn appropriate role behavior and attitudes. Then a review of the research which examines the characteristics of the female role model on television will illustrate the stereotypic female models television is now portraying. Chapter Three will discuss the methods and procedures necessary for examination of the male sex role model in …
George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger
George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
There are two popular myths concerning the eminent philosopher and social psychologist George Herbert Mead: that he published little during his lifetime and that Mind, Self, and Society is his most important sociological work. This misrepresentation of Mead's contributions is partially grounded in the neglect of his work and writings on social reform. The misrepresentation of the significance of the almost seventy articles Mead wrote during his lifetime distorts the meaning of his concepts and has profound implications for symbolic interactionists who claim Mead as one of their founding fathers.
A Comparison Of The Acceptance Of Selected In-Service Training Approaches By Field-Dependent Independent Home Economics Cooperating Teacher In The State Of Nebraska, Cheryl G. Fedje
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to compare the acceptance of three competency-based teacher education modules by field-dependent-independent Nebraska home economics cooperating teachers in a group setting and in an independent learning environment. The study explored three major questions: 1. Is there a difference in the satisfaction level of field-dependent and field-independent home economics cooperating teachers in specified competency-based teacher education modules?
2. Is there a difference in the achievement level of field-dependent and field-independent home economics cooperating teachers in terms of satisfactory completion of the learning activities included in specified competency-based teacher education modules?
3. Will field-dependent home economics …
Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards
Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Relationships between stage of moral judgment and antecedent social experiences are presented for a non-Western sample of young adults. Crosssectional data are presented for two groups of Kenyan students: 52 University of Nairobi students; and 40 fourth form secondary school Ss. Critical variables are (a) family modernization, (b) attending ethnically pluralistic secondary schools, and (c) living independently away from home. The correlations between moral judgment stage and these three variables are controlled for, and compared to, correlations between stage of moral judgment and age, sex, race, and academic ability (as measured by standardized achievement tests or by grades). The …
Climatic Change And The Extinction Of Large Mammals During The Quaternary, C. Bertrand Schultz, John M. Hillerud
Climatic Change And The Extinction Of Large Mammals During The Quaternary, C. Bertrand Schultz, John M. Hillerud
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
There is an abundance of soils and paleosols as well as terraces and terrace fills and erosional forms of pediments to aid in working out a precise stratigraphic sequence for the Quaternary animals. The dating and correlation of Quaternary deposits are complex, and we must realize that there were numerous glacial advances and retreats. A continuing reexamination of the relationship of the mammalian faunas to the paleosols, terrace fills, volcanic ashes, and other geologic features must be done in order to provide a proper framework for the interpretation of the mammalian stratigraphic sequences.

The Classical European Glacial Stages: Correlation With Deep-Sea Sediments, George Kukla
The Classical European Glacial Stages: Correlation With Deep-Sea Sediments, George Kukla
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Four glacials and three interglacials, recognized by classical Alpine and North-European subdivisions of the Pleistocene, were correlated with continuous oxygen-isotope records from the oceans using loess sections and terraces as a link (Fig. 15). It was found that the Alpine "glacial" stages are represented by sediments formed during both glacial and interglacial climates, that the classical Alpine "interglacial" stages do not represent episodes of interglacial climate but probably intervals of accelerated crustal movements, and that the physical evidence on which the North-European classical subdivision is based is misinterpreted due to lengthy gaps in the record.
It is recommended to discontinue …
The Origins Of Spring Migratory Staging By Sandhill Cranes And White-Fronted Geese, Roger S. Sharpe
The Origins Of Spring Migratory Staging By Sandhill Cranes And White-Fronted Geese, Roger S. Sharpe
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A most unusual avian migratory event takes place each spring in the Platte River basin of Nebraska between 98 and 102 degrees longitude (Fig. 1). In suitable habitats throughout this area large concentrations of Sandhill Cranes, Grus canadensis, and White-fronted Geese, Anser albifrons, develop and achieve peak populations in mid to late March. This phenomenon is traditional to the migratory habits of specific populations and occurs during the spring movement from wintering grounds in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico to breeding grounds far to the north in Canada and Alaska. In both species groups of individuals drift in …

The Plio-Pleistocene: Sediments, Environments, And Geochronology Along The Karari Escarpment, East Turkana, Kenya, Carl F. Vondra, Daniel R. Burggraf Jr., Howard J. White
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The sedimentary sequence of East Turkana, Kenya, provides an excellent opportunity to document change contemporary with the Plio-Pleistocene boundary in East Africa. Within exposures along the Karari Ridge, sediments of the Fluvio-lacustrine Koobi Fora Formation record a dramatic change in depositional regime from low to high energy attributable to climate change and/or tectonic activity. The correlation of this abrupt transition with the beginning of the Pleistocene epoch is not without question, but controversy resulting from radiometric dating of volcanic ash units, paleomagnetic zonation, and paleontologic data exists and indicates that resolution of the Plio-Pleistocene boundary at East Turkana will be …
Excavations At Natural Trap Cave, Larry D. Martin, B. Miles Gilbert
Excavations At Natural Trap Cave, Larry D. Martin, B. Miles Gilbert
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Among the more important questions addressed by students of earth history are those that relate to climatic change. This is especially true of change that has taken place during the last two million years of the "Ice Age." It is not an accident that a great deal of effort has been directed towards the Late Pleistocene, and our knowledge of Late Pleistocene environmental parameters has increased markedly in the past few years. However, our knowledge of these changes is still incomplete, and we still have some uncertainty about the cause and nature of Late Pleistocene climatic change, its possible relationship …
