Building on the base established by Robert Rutland, the 1980 numbers of the ADE Newsletter will seek to become an arena for dialogue about the craft of documentary editing. Dialogues are perhaps not always conducted in arenas, but then in his presidential address at Princeton, Arthur Link urged that we initiate "lively communication and discussion • • • to improve our standards" of selection, annotation, and methodology.

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
Thirty-four states, the District of Columbia and Canada were represented at POD's Fifth Annual Conference at Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. This introductory sentence should sound vaguely familiar to many of the Quarterly's readers, since it is numerically the same as last years' opening summary report statement. Tennessee and Canada, with 13 participants each, wrested top honors from last year's winner, Texas, which fell from 16 to 9 participants. Other double-digit states were Ohio and Virginia, with 11 each, and California and Illinois, with 10 each.

Accuracy Of First Lactation Versus All Lactation Sire Evaluations By Best Linear Unbiased Prediction, G. R. Ufford, C. R. Henderson, J. F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Variances of errors of prediction for sire evaluations which included only first records and for those with records of all lactations were compared for bulls of Ayrshire, Guernsey, Jersey, and Brown Swiss breeds used by artificial insemination with daughters having Dairy Herd Improvement records processed at the New York Dairy Records Processing Laboratory. The model for best linear unbiased prediction included fixed effects of sire group and herd-year-season of freshening and random effects of sires within group, sire-by-herd interaction (to account for environmental correlation among paternal sisters), cow within sire and herd, and residual. Variances of solutions for group effects …

An Approximate Procedure For Determining Prediction Error Variances Of Sire Evaluations, G. R. Ufford, C. R. Henderson, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Prediction errors of sire evaluations can be obtained directly from the inverse of the appropriate coefficient matrix. Considerably more effort is required to obtain the inverse in practical situations than can be justified for publication of a confidence figure. An approximate prediction error variance, k/(n + 20), is used currently in the Northeast Artificial Insemination Sire Comparison where n is the number of daughters and k is an appropriate breed constant corresponding to the residual variance. This procedure, however, does not account for distribution of sires across herds nor several lactations per daughter. Thus, the diagonal elements of the sire …

Niobrara-Missouri River Fishery Investigations, Larry W. Hesse, Gene Zeurlein, Roger Vancil, Leonard Koziol, Brad Newcomb, Leigh Ann Retelsdorf
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
The Niobrara River heads in the table lands of eastern Wyoming and flows 786 kilometers (km) eastward across Nebraska joining the Missouri River near the town of Niobrara, Nebraska. The Niobrara is the largest Missouri River tributary between the last two mainstem impoundments (Lake Francis Case and Lewis and Clark Lake). Fish movement up the Niobrara is prevented by Nebraska Public Power District's (NPPD's) Spencer Hydroelectric Dam, 63.3 km upstream from the river mouth. The lower reach of the river is turbid and carries a considerable load of sand, silt, and organic debris into the Missouri River. The mean annual …

Response And Encoding Factors In "Ignoring" Irrelevant Information, John H. Flowers, Jack L. Warner, Michael L. Polanski
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Subjects classified either the numerosity or numeric value of elements in successive stimulus displays. In separate experiments, responses were indicated by oral naming, card sorting, manual tapping, and oral "tapping." Incongruent levels of numeric value slowed naming and sorting, but not tapping, when numerosity was the cue for responding. Incongruent numerosity slowed tapping, but not naming and sorting, when numeric value was the cue. Changes in stimulus response mapping may thus critically alter the ability to ignore an irrelevant stimulus dimension.
The Biostratigraphy Of Arvicoline Rodents In North America, Larry D. Martin
The Biostratigraphy Of Arvicoline Rodents In North America, Larry D. Martin
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Arvicoline rodents are presently the most useful biostratigraphic tools in North America for the correlation of continental sediments that are Blancan in age or younger. Recent work in the Central Great Plains suggests that they also may have value for intercontinental correlations. About one-third of the Blancan genera of arvicolines became extinct at the end of Blancan time, while the earliest post-Blancan faunas contain very few arvicolines. The fauna from beneath the "type-S Pearlette Ash" at the type section of the Sappa Formation (1.2 million years B.P.) contains the earliest dated record of a Microtus-like microtine (Allophaiomys) …
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Humanities In Medical Education- The Past Ten Years, James J. Quinn
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
What has always fascinated me is an historical account that ends triumphantly but whose start-to-finish is riddled with reversals and hostile obstacles and haunted by anguishing circumstances. The history of "humanities in medical education- the past ten years" in the United States is just such a story. In the last ten years there has been a continually wider acceptance of humanities in United States medical schools, i.e., a growing number of schools introducing the humanities, a growth in the quality and scope of programs being offered, and a greater acceptance of the humanities as an integral part of the medical …
The Brain: Physiological Foundations Of Evaluation And Memory, Jeff C. Schank
The Brain: Physiological Foundations Of Evaluation And Memory, Jeff C. Schank
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Behavioristic axiomatizations of human evaluation have been well established (von Newmann and Morgenstern, 1953; Leinfellner, 1969). The axiomatization of the evaluative interpretation scheme can be applied to the historical sciences and provides a model of historical time. Newtonian time can be defined by imposing a strict serial order on temporal events by means of the relations of simultaneity and succession, which has been axiomatized recently (Leinfellner, 1966). The former axiomatization of the structure of evaluation can be combined with the latter axiomatization of the structure of temporally ordered memory, based on preference and indifference relations of an individual as he …
Energy And Angular Distributions Of Secondary Electrons From 5-100-Kev-Proton Collisions With Hydrogen And Nitrogen Molecules, M. Eugene Rudd
Energy And Angular Distributions Of Secondary Electrons From 5-100-Kev-Proton Collisions With Hydrogen And Nitrogen Molecules, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
Cross sections for the ejection of electrons from hydrogen and nitrogen by protons have been measured as a function of the energy and angle of ejection of the electrons at incident proton energies of 5-70 keV and 100 keV for hydrogen. The range of angles measured was 10-160° and the electron energy range was 1.5-300 eV. The doubly differential cross sections were also integrated over angle, over electron energy, or over both to obtain singly differential and total cross sections for electron production. Average electron energies were also calculated from the data. The angular distributions of electrons are peaked in …

Photoelectric Properties And Detection Of The Aromatic Carcinogens Benzo[A]Pyrene And Dimethylbenzanthracene, William A. Houle, Hugh M. Brown, O. Hayes Griffith
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The absolute photoelectron quantum yield spectra for benzo[ajpyrene and dimethylbenzanthracene are presented in the wavelength range 180-230 nm. These polycyclic aromatic carcinogens have photoelectron quantum yields of approximately 2 X 10-3 electrons per incident photon at 180 nm. The quantum yields fall off quickly and monotonically at wavelengths longer than 210 nm (5.9 eV). Threshold values for benzo[a]pyrene and dimethylbenzanthracene are 5.25 ± 0.06 eV and 5.27 ± 0.04 eV, respectively. The photoelectron quantum yields of benzo[a]pyrene and dimethylben-zanthracene are several orders of magnitude greater than typical components of biological membranes (amino acids, phospholipids, and polysaccharides). Preliminary micrographs of …

The influence of cortisol and prolactin on casein gene expression in the mammary gland of lactating BALB/c mice was measured by using a specific cDNA probe to 15S casein mRNA (cDNAcsn). Casein mRNA (mRNAcsn) level in the mammary gland was decreased by 85% 5 days after adrenal ablation, but then was increased 4.4-fold 12 hr after a single injection of hydrocortisone-21-acetate. An 80% decrease in serum prolactin level, induced by the prolactin inhibitor 2- bromo-α-ergocryptin (CB-154), did not alter the level of mRNAcsn in the gland. Specific transcription of the casein gene in nuclei isolated …

Biological characteristics of nodule-like alveolar lesions (NLAL) induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in organ culture of whole mammary gland (BALB/c female mice) were assessed after transplantation into gland-free mammary fat pads of syngeneic virgin mice. (i)Tissue- fragment explants from NLAL areas of the gland produced abnormal lobuloalveolar (LA) outgrowths in 3 of 10 fat pads. (ii) Transplantation of dissociated cells of NLAL-derived LA outgrowths into 36 fat pads showed 100% LA outgrowths and 3 (8%) of these 36 outgrowths produced mammary carcinomas. (iii) The explants of dissociated cells from whole mammary glands treated with DMBA …

The leaf-nosed bats of the New World family Phyllostomatidae occur from the southwestern United States through tropical Central and South America. Members of this family are also found throughout the Antilles. The ecological associations of the species in this family seem to be rather broad; species are found in humid tropical to semiarid and arid subtropical environments. Diversity in feeding is readily apparent ranging from nectivores (Glossophaga), frugivores (Artibeus), sanguivores (Desmodus), to omnivores (Phyllostomus) (see review by Glass, 1970; Gardner, this volume).
To understand better the biology of phyllostomatid bats, it is …

Freitas and Costa (1964, Arq. Esc. Vet. Univ. Fed. Minas Gerais 16:231-234) described a new species, Echinopardalis lamasi, from two acanthocephalans (1 male, 1 female) of a cat, Felis domestica (=F. catus), captured in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. These specimens have been lost (Freitas, 1975, personal communication). Until two of 127 domestic cats, F. catus, from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do SuI, captured between October 1973 and July 1976, were found to harbor respectively two and nine acanthocephalans conspecific with those described by Freitas and Costa, no additional specimens of this species were available for study. These new specimens assist …

Partially purified Met-tRNAf binding factor, eIF-2, was phosphorylated by using heme-regulated inhibitor (HRI). Phosphorylated eIF-2 was freed from HRI by phosphocellulose column chromatography. Analysis by isoelectric focusing showed 100% phosphorylation of the 38,000-dalton subunit of eIF-2. Both eIF-2 and eIF-2(P) formed ternary complexes with Met-tRNAf and GTP with almost the same efficiency, and in both cases the ternary complex formation was drastically inhibited by prior addition of Mg2+. However, whereas the ternary complexes formed with eIF-2 could be stimulated by Co-eIF-2C at 1 mM Mg2+ and dissociated by Co-eIF-2B at 5 mM Mg2+, …

O. Ralston, A. Das, M. Grace, H. Das, N. K. Gupta
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
During heme deficiency in reticulocyte lysates, a translational inhibitor (heme-regulated inhibitor, HRI) that blocks polypeptide chain initiation is activated. HRI is a protein kinase that specifically phosphorylates the 38,000-dalton subunit of the Met-tRNAfMet binding factor, eIF-2. Phosphorylation of eIF-2 by HRI prevents its interaction with at least two additional factors, resulting in a net reduction in formation of ternary complex (Met-tRNAfMet eIF-2•GTP) and AUG-dependent transfer of Met-tRNAfMet to 40S ribosomal subunits. A factor (sRF) that reverses protein synthesis inhibition in heme-deficient Iysates has been purified from reticulocyte postribosomal supernatant. sRF also reverses the inhibition …
