Genetic And Economic Implications Of Fetal Effects On The Dam, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. P. Johnson Jan 1980

Genetic And Economic Implications Of Fetal Effects On The Dam, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. P. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The genetic model for fetal effect on production of the dam is described, and studies on genetic and economic implications are reviewed. The effect on production from the sire of the cow has 1.58 to 3.02 times as much economic value as the effect from the sire of the fetus. The use of mate records in evaluating a sire in addition to daughter records could increase economic gain from selection by 1 to 2% depending on the variation from sire of fetus. Mate records alone do not appear valuable for sire selection. About 1% of the variation in milk yield …

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1980

Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. Some years later the census of 1890 revealed that in North Dakota, for example, 42.7 percent of the population of that newly admitted …

Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1980

Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …

New Species Of Coprini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) Taken From The Pelage Of Three Toed Sloths (Bradypus Tridactylus L.) (Edentata: Bradypodidae) In Central Amazonia With A Brief Commentary On Scarab-Sloth Relationships, Brett C. Ratcliffe Jan 1980

Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Two of three species of Scarabaeidae associated with the three toed sloth in the vicinity of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil are described as new: Trichillum adisi and Uroxys besti. The pupa and third stage larva of T. adisi are described. Ecological aspects of the sloth-scarab associations are discussed.

Theoretical Lattice-Dynamical Studies Of The Incommensurate Phase Transformation In K2Seo4, M. S. Haque, John R. Hardy Jan 1980

Theoretical Lattice-Dynamical Studies Of The Incommensurate Phase Transformation In K2Seo4, M. S. Haque, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

We have made detailed lattice-dynamical studies of the origin of the incommensurate phase transition in potassium selenate. These were based on a rigid-ion model with Coulomb interactions, and also short-range interactions between restricted numbers of close neighbors. The associated short-range force constants were determined using the static equilibrium conditions for the crystal and the observed Raman frequencies. The calculations were made for the room temperature structure using the quasiharmonic approximation in which the effects of varying temperature were simulated by varying the short-range force constants. In this way we were able to show that the crystal has a low-frequency optic …

Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech Jan 1980

Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The possibility of social regulation of wolf populations has been discussed in the literature for several years. Some of the first ecological studies of wolves indicated that their populations did not increase as rapidly as was theoretically possible, and that they reached a saturation point apparently not set by food. Subsequent captive studies demonstrated the existence of social mechanisms possibly capable of regulating population growth. However, the importance of these factors in wild populations has not been established. This paper has four objectives: (1) to evaluate the existing concept of "intrinsic limitation," (2) to propose that wolf population dynamics may …

The Rush Creek – Lisco Structural Basin, Garden And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1980

The Rush Creek – Lisco Structural Basin, Garden And Morrill Counties, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Detailed field mapping of outcrops in southern Garden and Morrill counties, Nebraska, has revealed a drop of more than 60 m (200 ft) in 4.8 km (3 mi) in the elevation of the contact between the Brule Formation and the Ogallala Group as exposed on the east side of Rush Creek. Beds of silt, sand, siltstone, and volcanic ash locally dip to the northwest at angles up to 8.5'. The contact between the two formations cannot be seen on the west side of Rush Creek but beds in the Ogallala Group there dip to the north and northeast. Rocks north …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The crystal and molecular structures of S-isopropyl O-methyl O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl) phosphoramidothioate, C9H12N2O2PSC13, and dimethoate [ O,O-dimethyl S-(N-methylcarbamoyl)methyl phosphorodithioate], C5HI2NO3PS2, have been determined by three-dimensional X-ray analysis. The former compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with a = 10.319 (5) Å, b = 10.730 (6) Å, c = 8.44 (4) Å, a = 99.01 (2)°, β = 114.02 (l)°, and y = 62.64 (1)° with Z = 2, and the latter compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 …

Stress Measurements At Depth In The Vicinity Of The San Andreas Fault: Implications For The Magnitude Of Shear Stress At Depth, Mark D. Zoback, Hiroaki Tsukahara, Stephen Hickman Jan 1980

Stress Measurements At Depth In The Vicinity Of The San Andreas Fault: Implications For The Magnitude Of Shear Stress At Depth, Mark D. Zoback, Hiroaki Tsukahara, Stephen Hickman

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Using the hydraulic fracturing technique, we have made a systematic series of in situ stress measurements in wells drilled near the San Andreas fault. In an attempt to provide constraints for the magnitude of shear stress on the San Andreas fault at depth we have measured both the variation of stress with distance from the fault in relatively shallow (~230 m) wells and the variation of stress with depth in a ~ 1 km-deep well located 4 km from the fault. The shallow wells are located along profiles roughly perpendicular to the fault in the western Mojave desert near Palmdale …

Preston Dickinson 1889·1930, Ruth Cloudman, Norman Geske Jan 1980

Preston Dickinson 1889·1930, Ruth Cloudman, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

During the decade before the first World War, many young American artists went to Europe to study. A number of them, deeply impressed by the new movements in European art, returned home to develop their own approaches to abstract form and color. Preston Dickinson was one of these. Although the contributions of these artists to the growth of abstraction in American art have been undergoing a reappraisal for some time, Dickinson's place in these developments has not been evaluated and has remained somewhat unclear. He is best known for his association with the Precisionist movement of the 1920's, but even …

A Review Of The Initial Coalescent Variant, Greg Fox Jan 1980

A Review Of The Initial Coalescent Variant, Greg Fox

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Initial Coalescent Variant of the Middle Missouri Sub-area (Lehmer 1971) poses many problems for archeologists working with the culture history of the Central/Northern Plains Areas. The Initial Coalescent should not, however, be considered as strictly confined to the localities of the Big Bend Dam and Pierre, South Dakota, as Lehmer (1971) suggests. Manifestations of this cultural complex can be found as far away as the Niobrara River valley in Boyd County, Nebraska at the Lynch Site (25BD1) (Caldwell 1966). This site has been grouped with the prototype Initial Coalescent site, the Arzberger Site (39HU6), into a taxonomic unit known …

Documentary Editing: A Bibliography, Ross W. Beales Jr. Jan 1980

Documentary Editing: A Bibliography, Ross W. Beales Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Documentary editing has achieved unprecedented importance in American historical scholarship since the publication in 1950 of the first volume of Julian P. Boyd's edition of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Thanks to the support of state and federal government, foundations, and universities and to the labors of a generation of editors, scores of letterpress and microfilm editions have been completed or are in progress. These editions are noteworthy for their comprehensiveness and high standards of scholarship as well as for their cost. The rapid expansion of documentary editing has been accompanied by the appearance of an extensive literature on all …

Where We Stand Now And Where We Might Go, Arthur S. Link Jan 1980

Where We Stand Now And Where We Might Go, Arthur S. Link

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Incomplete though my own knowledge and wisdom are, this is the time, above all others, when we need to take a hard look at ourselves and what we are doing and not doing; that what we need is honest if unpleasant self-scrutiny, not self-congratulation. The love of God is the beginning of wisdom; but we can neither love God nor acquire wisdom until we are honest about ourselves. Let me hasten to say that the following observations about our deficiencies as documentary editors apply exclusively, I think it is fair to say, to those of us who work in materials …

The "Perfect" Text: The Editor Speaks For The Author, David J. Nordloh Jan 1980

The "Perfect" Text: The Editor Speaks For The Author, David J. Nordloh

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I'd like to offer two preliminary comments about the general topic of this session, the "perfect" text, and another about the aspect of that topic which I've been asked to discuss. On the general topic, our presentations may - indeed should - overlap; no aspect of textual scholarship, theoretical or practical, can be sensibly isolated from the others. And second, the placement of "perfect" in quotation marks in the title of the session is an acknowledgment of the virtual impossibility of the task: as editors we are frustrated by a multitude of conditions - I'll be describing a few of …

Editors' Concern With Archivists In Crisis, Lester J. Cappon Jan 1980

Editors' Concern With Archivists In Crisis, Lester J. Cappon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

On 2 July 1979 a new administrator of GSA, Admiral Rowland G. Freeman III, took office after a distinguished operational and administrative career in the Navy, including a recent "college presidency" as commandant of the Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He has assembled the facts of life concerning NARS with the aid of detailed memoranda from the acting archivist, who has unobtrusively injected between the lines some much-needed advice. In pursuing his willful course the administrator does not have to contend with a knowledgeable archivist of the United States, since the position is vacant. Besides, by law …
