Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli May 1981

Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Housing publications of the Bungalow era (1900 to 1930) containing over 1200 illustrated Bungalows and derivations, were compared with 717 photographed representatives in Lincoln, Nebraska. These samples were categorized by 10 types first described by writer Henry Saylor (1911). Interpretations of the style by local builders and architects in Lincoln, Nebraska, were traced to house pattern books, national and local publications, and state and city records, to determine how the style evolved locally. The search led to regional design features of the Bungalow, nearly square forms, and composite types.

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry May 1981

Frontier Subsistence: An Example Of Nineteenth Century Fur Trade Food Procurement, Leslie A. Perry

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The area of Frontier subsistence strategies holds considerable potential for explaining Euroamerican adaptation in North America between A.D. 1500 and 1900. This thesis examines the interrelationships between food procurement activities of a nineteenth century northern Plains fur trade post, Fort Union, and its environmental and economic settings. The subsistence strategy identified from ethnohistorical, archival, and archeological data illustrates the way in which inhabitants of the fort coped with a variable local environment and the demands of the fur trade. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the post's subsistence strategy indicates that both the subsistence strategy and the economic base of the …

Exercise And Stress Tolerance, Richard A. Dienstbier, James Crabbe, Glen O. Johnson, William Thorland, Julie A. Jorgensen, Mitchel M. Sadar, Dennis C. Lavelle

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Presented in this paper is research designed in part to show that although moderate running by well-trained runners plays a significant role in reducing stress response to subsequently introduced stressors, running at the level of marathon competition alters psychological and physiological dispositions in a manner not conducive to reduced stress responses. In these demonstrations, the choice of our psychological and physiological dependent measures was guided by a larger theoretical framework concerning the relationship of exercise to temperament. We will discuss this larger view first because it provides a theoretical perspective that is useful in considering our specific hypotheses. We believe …

The Heirs Of James C. Malin: A Grassland Historiography, Allan G. Bogue Apr 1981

The Heirs Of James C. Malin: A Grassland Historiography, Allan G. Bogue

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the early pages of his important novel of western life, Zury, The Meanest Man in Spring County, Joseph Kirkland brought the Prouder family to the blazed tree that marked the location of the Illinois land that was to be their new home, the "woods behind" and the "prairie before" them. Herbert Quick halted yOl1ng Jacobus Vandemark on the bluffs above Dubuque, where the first great rolling sweep of the prairie grassland lay spread before him, and reported that a great surge of emotion coursed through the boy. John Ise pictured the covered wagon of his parents, Rosie and Henry …

Social Context Affects Expression Of Conditioned Taste Aversions During Grooming By Pine Voles: Implications For Animal Damage Control, J. Russell Mason, Lynette A. Geyer, Christine A. Kornet Mar 1981

Social Context Affects Expression Of Conditioned Taste Aversions During Grooming By Pine Voles: Implications For Animal Damage Control, J. Russell Mason, Lynette A. Geyer, Christine A. Kornet

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

Rodents typically show conditioned aversions to substances previously associated with illness. Aversions can be observed when the tastant is presented in food, water and, for rats, when the tastant is smeared unilaterally on the animal's flank and ingested during auto-grooming. Such results have important implications for rodent control. For that reason, others have investigated whether voles and mice continue to groom when tastants associated with sickness are smeared on their fur. Investigations have shown that grooming persists in the presence of the conditioned stimuli even though strong aversions are shown toward the same tastants in a drinking context. The question …

A System For The Observation Of Voles Under Semi-Natural Conditions With Applications To: Social Interactions, Competition, Food Habits, Habitat Preference And Bait Accpetance., D. S. Wilkie, M. A. Novak

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

A laboratory system to study microtine rodents has been developed that avoids many of the intrinsic restrictions of earlier laboratory and field studies. The system is composed of two interconnected plexiglas tables with a soil substrate and hay cover. The system permits unconstrained visual observation of voles as they move within a runway network of their own construction. The flexibility of the system facilitates its use in various avenues of microtine research.

Trematode-Gastropod Associations In Nine Non-Lacustrine Habitats In The Mwanza Region Of Tanzania, Sam Loker, H. G. Moyo, Scott Lyell Gardner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Between August 1978 and July 1979, freshwater gastropods were collected at monthly intervals from 9 different non-lacustrine habitats in the Mwanza region of Tanzania. Of a total of 11 708 gastropods representing 14 species, 1748 (14.9 %) were infected with trematode sporocysts and/or rediae. Altogether 38 morphologically distinguishable ‘species’ of cercariae were recovered (13 furcocercous, 10 xiphidiocercaria, 6 echinostome, 4 cystophorous, 3 gymnocephalous and 2 amphistome species), 22 of which did not conform to previously described African species. The majority (63.8%) of all mature infections were xiphidiocercariae. Biomphalaria pfeifferi, B. sudanica and Ceratophallus natalensis each yielded 11 species of …

François Lamy And The Rhetoric Of Attention Of Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1981

François Lamy And The Rhetoric Of Attention Of Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

François Lamy is always mentioned in the lively polemic over rhetoric touched off in 1694 by the attack of Goibaud Dubois against pulpit eloquence. The Benedictine Lamy became the center of the controversy when a 1698 éclaircissement of his De la connaissance de soi-même (5 vols. Paris, 1694-1698) provided the most thorough critique of the ancient art the quarrel produced. Malebranche himself did not participate directly in this dispute, but since he had made similar criticisms in passing in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) his presence was constantly felt in the background. This resemblance is no coincidence. According to …

Determination Of Age And Whelping Dates Of Live Red Fox Pups, Alan B. Sargeant, Stephen H. Allen, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Public concern for large carnivores, high longhair fur prices, and recent findings of predator-prey investigations have increased interest in the management of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). A technique for assigning individuals to age-classes is necessary to understand the population dynamics and behavioral interactions of this species.

Streptococcal Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock Jan 1981

Streptococcal Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Streptococcosis is a septicemic disease that affects both freshwater and saltwater fishes; it was first reported in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri (Hoshino et al. 1958). Additional outbreaks have since been described in cultured golden shiners (Notemigonus crysoleucas), yellowtails (Sepiola quinqueradiata), and eels (Anguilla japonious) , and in a variety of feral saltwater fishes.

Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, S. F. Snieszko Jan 1981

Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, S. F. Snieszko

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Bacterial gill disease (BGD) was first described by Davis (1926, 1927), who observed it in fry and fingerling brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) in hatcheries in Vermont. The affected trout were kept in dirt-bottom ponds and were not crowded; , daily mortalities were very low. Mortalities rapidly increased when the water temperature increased and diminished when the temperature decreased. Examination of the diseased trout revealed clubbing of gill filaments. In microscopic examination of wet mounts of the filaments" Davis found that the gill surface was covered with closely adhering strands of long, …

Proposed Editing Manual: Background, David J. Nordloh Jan 1981

Proposed Editing Manual: Background, David J. Nordloh

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

In his presidential address at the ADE meeting in Princeton in November 1979, Arthur Link suggested that the profession's most obvious need was for "an authoritative manual on documentary editing." As a first step, Lester Cappon, the incoming president, suggested the formation of a committee whose first objective would be to determine the practicability of ADE producing a manual, and whose next objective (assuming the first was decided in the affirmative) would be to prepare a set of preliminary guidelines to be discussed at the annual meeting in Williamsburg in October 1980. Richard Showman (Nathanael Greene Papers) agreed to chair …

Two Authors And A Hero: Neihardt, Sandoz, And Crazy Horse, Helen Stauffer

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The western writers John G. Neihardt and Mari Sandoz had much in common, not the least of which was their admiration for Crazy Horse, the famous Oglala Sioux chief during the Indian wars of the last century, whom both considered the "last great Sioux." The chief was a fine tactician and warrior, fighting successfully against General Crook at the Battle of the Rosebud and General Custer at the Little Bighorn in 1876, but the authors found much more to admire in his personal life. Born on the Great Plains around 1841, he remained a "hostile savage" all his life; nevertheless, …

Auditing Partnership Tax Shelters: Irs Procedures And Taxpayer Liability, Michael W. Homer Jan 1981

Auditing Partnership Tax Shelters: Irs Procedures And Taxpayer Liability, Michael W. Homer

Nebraska Law Review

During the past decade, tax shelter investments were among the most controversial planning devices used by high-bracket taxpayers. United States Treasury officials have argued that the use of shelters causes an inequitable distribution of the tax burden and introduces "significant distortions into our economy," which "can have the effect of discouraging profitable and efficient enterprise." To halt widespread investment in "abusive" shelters, the Treasury has asked Congress to enact restrictive legislation; has issued revenue rulings to limit their use; and has begun a sophisticated tax shelter audit program. The most significant substantive limitations imposed on tax shelters were enacted in …

Comparisons Of Mating Systems With Duroc, Hampshire And Yorkshire Breeds Of Swine For Efficiency Of Swine Production, E. R. Wilson, R. K. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Estimates of direct and maternal genetic and heterosis effects for purebreds and crosses among the Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire breeds were made from data on 1,243 litters from the Oklahoma crossbreeding experiment. The estimates were used to simulate the production efficiency of 21 mating systems. Each mating system was defined to include purebred, crossbred and commercial matings needed to maintain 10,000 farrowings. Linear programming was used to maximize the number of Yorkshire equivalent pigs foreach system. An index of economic weights for days to 100 kg, feed efficiency and probe backfat (traits expressed as a deviation from Yorkshire) was calculated …

Heg81-148 How To Say Yes--How To Say No, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses assertive behavior and how to become more assertive.

When you get angry with someone, are you afraid to say anything because you don't want to hurt their feelings?

When the meat you ordered at a restaurant meal is overcooked, do you eat it anyway?

When your partner does something you don't like, do you get angry and yell?

When someone pays you a compliment, do you say, "I didn't really do anything?"

Then you may wish to consider learning to express yourself in a more positive, confident and straightforward manner. Being assertive is based on the idea …

Recessive Alleles Found At R And C Loci In Maze Stalks Showing Aberrant Ratio At The A Locus, Myron K. Brakke, R. G. Samson, W. A. Compton Jan 1981

Recessive Alleles Found At R And C Loci In Maze Stalks Showing Aberrant Ratio At The A Locus, Myron K. Brakke, R. G. Samson, W. A. Compton

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Corn stocks showing virus-induced aberrant ratio (AR) at the “A” locus were found to have recessive alleles at the R and/or C loci. Since by the known pedigree these loci should be homozygous dominant, the results suggest an inactivation of maize genes by a mechanism as yet unknown. The presence of recessive alleles at these additional loci can explain the segregation ratios obtained in these particular stocks.
