Heg83-183 Negotiating With Creditors, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue Jan 1983

Heg83-183 Negotiating With Creditors, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

At some time, almost everyone gets behind in paying a bill. This publication offers suggestions about how to deal with creditors during those times.

The Problem

Due to some unexpected event, you are behind on your bills and don't expect to be able to catch up in the next month or two. You may have lost your job, or have had large medical bills.

You make promises to pay you can't keep; checks bounce, or you receive threats from creditors (people to whom you owe money) that they will sue or turn the account over to a collection agency.

Your …

Human Adaptations In The Andes: A Look At Nutrition And Brain Function With Respect To Coca And High Altitude Physiological Adaptations, Barrett P. Brenton Jan 1983

Human Adaptations In The Andes: A Look At Nutrition And Brain Function With Respect To Coca And High Altitude Physiological Adaptations, Barrett P. Brenton

Nebraska Anthropologist

Throughout the span of human evolution the brain has allowed itself to be controlled by nutritional intake. This correlation between nutrition and the brain has led me to believe that the human brain has allowed itself to be manipulated and controlled by an individual's dietary intake in order to successfully adapt to the environment. In looking at the indigenous peoples of the South American Andes, I found surprising parallels between human physiological adaptations to high altitude hypoxia and cold stress and the correlating control of neurotransmitters to the brain by dietary intake.

In a study of this type it becomes …

Tacit Vertical Collusion And The Labor-Industrial Complex, Walter Adams, James W. Brock Jan 1983

Tacit Vertical Collusion And The Labor-Industrial Complex, Walter Adams, James W. Brock

Nebraska Law Review

In this article, we propose to test John Kenneth Galbraith's countervailing power thesis by examining labor-management conduct in four different market situations. Two of our case studies deal with "regulated" industries and two with industries in the "private" sector. We demonstrate that in all four cases, coalescing power rather than countervailing power is systematically created and maintained; that this conduct constitutes a form of tacit vertical collusion; that a central objective of this collusion is the suppression of competition in relevant product markets in order to immunize cost-price escalation by labor and management from an autonomous, exogenous control mechanism; and …

The Rhetorical Theories Of Malebranche: Persuasion Through Imitation Or Attention?, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1983

The Rhetorical Theories Of Malebranche: Persuasion Through Imitation Or Attention?, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

France's most prominent philosopher of the second half of the seventeenth century is reputed to be no friend of rhetoric. Bernard Tocanne declares, "C'est chez Malebranche que se mettent en place tous les arguments mis en oeuvre par les adversaires de la rhétorique à la fin du siècle," and Peter France calls him "a philosopher who had no love for rhetoric." The basis of such judgments is the Oratorian's attacks in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) against the use of the imagination and passions in the eloquence of Tertullian, Seneca, and Montaigne. Malebranche's critique is symptomatic of the legacy …

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott Jan 1983

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The current study is grounded in the psychological approaches to the mechanics of communication, somewhere between cybernetics and attribution.

The integration of information available in different channels is the focus of the present study. To what extent do people rely on the different channels of communication to assign meaning to their world? More specifically, what is the relative importance of the verbal and nonverbal channels of communication in the meaning creation process?

This question of channel reliance is of central import to the study of the role of information in social/psychological systems. If it can be assumed that meaning is …

Physiology Of Male Reproduction, R. P. Amann, B. D. Schanbacher Jan 1983

Physiology Of Male Reproduction, R. P. Amann, B. D. Schanbacher

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The major advances over the past 25 yr in male reproductive physiology of cattle, sheep, swine and horses are reviewed. Those findings which have allowed efficient culling of subfertile males and exploitation of the reproductive capacity of genetically superior sires are emphasized.

Hormones secreted by the male gonad early in gestation induce regression of potentially female structures and development of the male reproductive tract. Compartmentalization of the testis and formation of the bloodtestis barrier during prepubertal development permit the steroidogenic and gametogenic activities of the adult testes to proceed normally. The role of the central nervous system, hypothalamus and anterior …

Some Pennsylvanian Chondrichthyan Spines From Nebraska, John G. Maisey Jan 1983

Some Pennsylvanian Chondrichthyan Spines From Nebraska, John G. Maisey

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Fragmentary, dermal spines of Pennsylvanian chondrichthyans from Cass and Sarpy counties, Nebraska, are described. Forms that have been identified include the genera Acondylacanthus, Amelacanthus, Bythiacanthus, and "Physonemus" and an indeterminate hybodont. A diverse chondrichthyan fauna is therefore represented by these spines. The record of Amelacanthus is the first outside Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Miocene Burrows Of Extinct Bear Dogs: Indication Of Early Denning Behavior Of Large Mammalian Carnivores, Robert M. Hunt Jr., Xue Xiang-Xu, Joshua Kaufman Jan 1983

Miocene Burrows Of Extinct Bear Dogs: Indication Of Early Denning Behavior Of Large Mammalian Carnivores, Robert M. Hunt Jr., Xue Xiang-Xu, Joshua Kaufman

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Partial skeletons off our species of extinct carnivores have been found in their dens excavated in the floodplain of an early Miocene ephemeral braided stream at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska. Bear dogs (Carnivora: Amphicyonidae) were the principal occupants; their den dimensions and body size are similar to those of living wolves and hyenas. Discovery of this predator community extends the record of denning behavior of large mammalian carnivores to the early Miocene, 20 million years ago.

Optimal Foraging Theory And The Psychology Of Learning, Alan Kamil Jan 1983

Optimal Foraging Theory And The Psychology Of Learning, Alan Kamil

Avian Cognition Papers

The development of optimization theory has made important contributions to the study of animal behavior. But the optimization approach needs to be integrated with other methods of ethology and psychology. For example, the ability to learn is an important component of efficient foraging behavior in many species, and the psychology of animal learning could contribute substantially to testing and extending the predictions of optimal foraging theory.

The Transmission Of Learned Behavior: An Observational Study Of Father-Child Interactions During Fishing, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond Jan 1983

The Transmission Of Learned Behavior: An Observational Study Of Father-Child Interactions During Fishing, Judy Diamond, Alan B. Bond

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Mechanisms of transmission of learned behavior were described in terms of the behavioral interactions between fathers and their children as they fished from a pier on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Verbal and nonverbal behaviors were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis and the patterns of association in the behavioral repertoire were described in detail. Groupings of associated behaviors ranged from clusters suggestive of modeling or simple showing to complex combinations of behaviors involved in teaching. There were indications that the transmission behaviors varied with the content of the transmitted information and the role of the performer. Role differentiation in the transmission behaviors …

Proteolytic Activity In Soybean Root Nodules: Activity In Host Cell Cytosol And Bacteroids Throughout Physiological Development And Senescence, Nancy E. Pfeiffer, Cecilia M. Torres, Fred W. Wagner Jan 1983

Proteolytic Activity In Soybean Root Nodules: Activity In Host Cell Cytosol And Bacteroids Throughout Physiological Development And Senescence, Nancy E. Pfeiffer, Cecilia M. Torres, Fred W. Wagner

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Root nodules were harvested from chamber-grown soybean (Glycine max L. Merril cv Woodworth) plants throughout development. Apparent nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) peaked before seeds began to develop, but a significant amount of activity remained as the seeds matured. Nodule senescence was defined as the period in which residual nitrogenase activity was lost. During this time, soluble protein and leghemoglobin levels in the host cell cytosol decreased, and proteolytic activity against azocasein increased. Degradative changes were not detected in bacteroids during nodule senescence. Total soluble bacteroid protein per gram of nodule remained constant, and an increase in proteolytic activity in …

Significance Of Residual Organisms In Foods After Substerilizing Doses Of Gamma Radiation: A Review, R. B. Maxcy Jan 1983

Significance Of Residual Organisms In Foods After Substerilizing Doses Of Gamma Radiation: A Review, R. B. Maxcy

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The nature of the flora surviving substerilizing irradiation of foods is dependent on the dose applied and the conditions of applications as well as the microenvi¬ronment of the food. At a dose level low enough to preserve acceptable sensory properties of fresh food, few if any of the common contaminants of public health significance survive irradiation. Survivors are weakened and present no unique problem of acquired resistance through recycling. Those bacteria surviving a low dose treatment of a relatively contaminated product like ground beef can grow under normal storage conditions and cause obvious sensory spoilage. Thus, low dose irradiation extends …

In Situ Studies Of Velocity In Fractured Crystalline Rocks, Daniel Moos, Mark D. Zoback Jan 1983

In Situ Studies Of Velocity In Fractured Crystalline Rocks, Daniel Moos, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A study of the effects of macroscopic fractures on P and S wave velocities has been conducted in four wells drilled in granitic rock to depths between 0.6 and 1.2km. The effect of macroscopic fractures is to decrease both Vp, and Vs and increase Vp/Vs. In wells with a relatively low density of macroscopic fractures, the in situ velocitiys similar to that of saturated core samples under confining pressure in the laboratory, and there is a clear correlation between zones with macroscopic fractures and anomalously low velocities. In wells with numerous macroscopic fractures, …

An Economic Approach To Hadley V. Baxendale: Evra Corporation V. Swiss Bank Corporation, 673 F.2d 951 (7th Cir. 1982), Larry D. Hause

Nebraska Law Review

Paralleling the technological progress found in other segments of society, the computer has revolutionized the banking industry by enabling funds to be transferred electronically. Electronic Fund Transfers (EFTs) have replaced numerous conventional uses of the check because computer transfers are a more efficient, convenient, and less costly method of transferring funds. The prevalence of EFT systems, however, raises difficult legal issues stemming from the new relationships among the participants and from the possible errors that can occur. A Seventh Circuit decision, EVRA Corporation v. Swiss Bank Corporation, highlights the legal problems involved when a party incurs a loss of …

Absolute Presidential Immunity From Civil Damages Liability: Nixon V. Fitzgerald, 102 S. Ct. 2690 (1982), Morris Woodruff Jan 1983

Absolute Presidential Immunity From Civil Damages Liability: Nixon V. Fitzgerald, 102 S. Ct. 2690 (1982), Morris Woodruff

Nebraska Law Review

In the United States, where “all men are created equal,” every person must obey the laws of the community and the nation or pay the penalty for his failure to do so. This principle, in the abstract, would go unchallenged. However, as is so often the case, when principles are translated into policies, the national consensus vanishes and disagreements arise. It can be rationally argued that the public welfare will best be served when certain persons are not subject to all the laws of the land. The concept of public officer immunity from private tort actions has been around for …

Drugs During Pregnancy: Dangerous Business—The Continued Movement To Provide Adequate Warnings For The Consumer, David Detar Newbert Jan 1983

Drugs During Pregnancy: Dangerous Business—The Continued Movement To Provide Adequate Warnings For The Consumer, David Detar Newbert

Nebraska Law Review

Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration amended its general drug labeling provisions to include warnings on numerous over-the-counter drugs. These changes are directed at protecting consumers who are either pregnant or nursing their infants. As a result, manufacturers of thousands of over-the-counter drug products have until December 5, 1983, to comply with the new labeling requirements. This Comment briefly reviews the scientific information that led to the new labeling requirements and gives a historical perspective of the government's role in protecting the American consumer from dangerous drugs. It also explores the drug manufacturer's role in the entire process …

The Desegregated School And Status Relationships Among Anglo And Hispanic Students, Peter Iadicola, Helen A. Moore Jan 1983

The Desegregated School And Status Relationships Among Anglo And Hispanic Students, Peter Iadicola, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Desgregated elementary school students display verbal and non-verbal indicators of status relationships in a structured, videotaped interaction game.  Both Hispanic and Anglo third grade student responses are analyzed across ten schools for a case study of factors that influence racial/ethnic integration outcomes.  Variance in student outcomes are primarily explained by socioeconomic dimensions of the schools.   These findings suggest that school desegregation poses a contradiction for Hispanic students.

Theories Of Piaget, Who Died This Month, Inspire Growing Band Of U.S. Professors, Robert L. Jacobson

ADAPT Program: Essays

The death of Jean Piaget this month at the age of 84 came at a time when the Swiss psychologist's theories of cognitive development were inspiring a small but growing number of innovative instructional programs in American colleges and universities. Most were started within the past few years and have yet to produce much hard evidence of their effectiveness. But participating faculty members say they are excited about what has been happening in their classrooms.

"Piagetian-based instruction," they say, offers many potential advantages over traditional methods: It facilitates communication, improves students' reasoning ability and academic achievement, boosts their self-confidence and …
