Some Plant Leaves Have Orientation-Dependent Epr And Nmr Spectra, Douglas C. Mccain, Ted C. Selig, University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign, John L. Markey
Some Plant Leaves Have Orientation-Dependent Epr And Nmr Spectra, Douglas C. Mccain, Ted C. Selig, University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign, John L. Markey
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra of leaves from 50 plant species were obtained at a spectrometer frequency of 470 MHz. Water present in leaf samples gives rise to characteristic spectral patterns. Most species show only one broad 1H NMR peak; however, the leaves of some plants display complex, orientation-dependent spectra in which a common three-line pattern is discerned. The pattern varies with the angle between the leaf surface and the external magnetic field. Proton relaxation measurements show the presence of at least two water compartments in the leaves. The compartments are responsible for different components …
Selected References On Walking, Crossing Streets, And Choosing Pedestrian Routes, Michael R. Hill
Selected References On Walking, Crossing Streets, And Choosing Pedestrian Routes, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Studies on the behavior and experiences of pedestrians have continued unabated since the first major bibliography on the subject, was compiled by Dietrich Garbrecht (1971a). Numerous additions were noted in a supplement by this author (Hill, 1976a). The present bibliography summarizes and updates these earlier works. Further, it includes several related references from the environmental design research literature which significantly illuminate the general problem of understanding the pedestrian environment. References on route choice by automobile drivers have specifically been included to encourage comparisons between vehicular and pedestrian transportation modes.
This bibliography is presented without annotations. However, those seeking a summary …
Epistemology, Axiology, And Ideology In Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Epistemology, Axiology, And Ideology In Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper (a) presents a systems framework for conceptualizing epistemological issues in sociology, (b) links this framework to axiological responsibilities, and then (c) locates both the epistemological and axiological discussions within the patriarchal ideology and hierarchical power structure of American sociology. I t is argued that adopting an activist, emancipatory ideological position obligates social scientists to critically review their axiological commitments and epistemological premises. Major arguments are set in italics to permit a quick scan of the paper. These arguments form an epistemological position paper for the closing of the Twentieth Century.
"A Chart In His Way" Indian Cartography And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda
"A Chart In His Way" Indian Cartography And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The sixteenth of January 1805 was not the kind of day Lewis and Clark would have chosen for calm deliberation and the thoughtful exchange of cartographic information. On that cold Dakota day, Fort Mandan was the scene of angry words and hostile gestures as Mandans and Hidatsas traded jeers and insults. While Lewis and Clark watched helplessly, Hidatsa warriors from the village of Menetarra charged Mandans with spreading malicious rumors designed to breed fear and keep Hidatsas away from the expedition. As the tough talk flew higher, the expedition's hopes for diplomacy sank. But in the midst of the bitterness …
Correlation Of The Middle Eocene Kellogg Shale Of Northern California, John A. Barron, David Bukry, Richard Z. Poore
Correlation Of The Middle Eocene Kellogg Shale Of Northern California, John A. Barron, David Bukry, Richard Z. Poore
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The Kellogg Shale of northern California has traditionally been considered to be late Eocene in age on the basis of benthic foraminifer, radiolarian, and diatom correlations. The 30-m-thick Kellogg section exposed west of Byron, California, however, contains middle Eocene planktonic foraminifers (Zone P12), coccoliths (Subzones CP13c and CP14a), silicoflagellates (Dictyocha hexacantha Zone), and diatoms. Quantitative studies of the silicoflagellates and diatoms show a general cooling trend through the section which is consistent with paleoclimatic trends for this part of the middle Eocene (ca. 42-45 Ma) from elsewhere in the world. Seven new silicoflagellate taxa (Corbisema angularis. C, exilis, …
Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne
Glacial Chronology Of The Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range, Nevada, William J. Wayne
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Ruby Mountains-East Humboldt Range, one of the interior mountain groups of the Basin and Range Province, lies about midway between the Wasatch Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. After Blackwelder’s description in his review of glaciation in the western mountains, Sharp mapped and named the deposits of the Lamoille and Angel Lake glaciations and correlated them with early and late Wisconsin deposits of the Great Lakes area. The refinement of relative dating (RD) methods, the availability of air photos and modem topographic maps, and new road cuts have aided the restudy of these alpine glacial deposits and the basis for …
Characterizing The Lsi Yield Equation From Wafer Test Data, Sharad C. Seth, Vishwani D. Agrawal
Characterizing The Lsi Yield Equation From Wafer Test Data, Sharad C. Seth, Vishwani D. Agrawal
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
The results of production test on LSI wafers are analyzed to determine the parameters of the yield equation. Recognizing that a physical defect on a chip can produce several logical faults, the number of faults per defect is assumed to be a random variable with Poisson distribution. The analysis provides a relationship between the yield of the tested fraction of -the chip area and the cumulative fault coverage of test patterns. The parameters of the yield equation are estimated by fitting this relation to the measured yield versus fault coverage data.
Current Events In Extension Wildlife Damage Control In The United States, James E. Miller
Current Events In Extension Wildlife Damage Control In The United States, James E. Miller
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The Cooperative Extension Services (CES) within each state and territory of the United States and their federal partner, the Extension Service, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), have long recognized the need for, and responsibility of, providing educational programs in wildlife damage control to both rural and urban clientele. The system employed to implement these educational programs was established early in this century dating back to passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914. Through the years since that time, the strengths of this system have been the recognition of the need for a continuing spirit of cooperation with other federal …

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Most modern environmentalists during their formative years have had little actual contact with wildlife under natural conditions. Their wildlife philosophies have been developed via the mass media and from experiences with animals as pets or confined in zoos. In general, modern environmentalists are sincere, dedicated, idealistic and enthusiastic, but they often lack realism and are blessed with the innocence of naivete. The majority of people in the United States now exhibit strong affection for wild animals and are deeply concerned over any actions perceived as causing pain to individual animals. These attitudes towards wild animals will impact on future wildlife …
Behavioral Ecology Of Coyotes: Implications For Reducing Predator-Livestock Conflicts, William F. Andelt
Behavioral Ecology Of Coyotes: Implications For Reducing Predator-Livestock Conflicts, William F. Andelt
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
During the past 2 decades, numerous research projects have been conducted to gain a better understanding of coyote (Canis latrans) behavior and ecology which could be used to reduce livestock losses to predators. This paper synthesizes some of these investigations to provide some insight into methods of reducing livestock losses to coyotes.
Fencing For Deer Control, William R. Bonwell
Fencing For Deer Control, William R. Bonwell
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Deer (odocoileus virginianus) depredations are a serious problem for many landowners and few landowners plan for these potential depredations. Fencing to restrict deer movements has become the most economical means of control. Several fence designs are available but the new electrified high tensile wire fences hold the most promise for deer control.
Some International Approaches To Rat Control, Walter E. Howard
Some International Approaches To Rat Control, Walter E. Howard
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
There are many basic requirements concerning the political structure, financial support needed, proper organization, staff training, public education, laws and regulations, and the keeping of good records, which must be adequately considered before a rat control program can become successful. Likewise, there are also a number of basic principles concerning rodent control that must be understood and adhered to. Some villages in Korea and the country of Kuwait will be used as examples of new rat control approaches.

Rancher Use Of Compound 1080 Toxic Collars In New Mexico, Gary A. Littauer
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Twenty-three ranchers were trained and certified to use Compound 1080 in toxic collars to control coyote ( Ca nts l a tran s predation on sheep during a 2-year experimental program conducted by the New Mexico Department of Agriculture. Fifteen ranchers employed a total of 330 collars in field use. Two used collars in preventive control schemes and success was unknown. Thirteen used collars in corrective control (i.e. predation was in progress); 6 had collared lambs attacked and killed by coyotes; 4 had 1 or more collars punctured by coyotes and in 1 case a bobcat; 3 solved specific coyote …
Workshop-Discussion Session, Joesph M. Schaefer
Workshop-Discussion Session, Joesph M. Schaefer
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The purpose of the workshop-discussion session was to establish a list of ideas that would provide the best focus and direction to improve wildlife damage control programs. During this session the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) (Delbecq et al. 1975) was used to: 1) identify and rank obstacles that limit the effectiveness of wildlife damage control efforts, and 2) generate possible solutions to the most important obstacles. This format allowed equal and full participation and was successful in generating many original ideas.

The Microcomputer And Kansas Wildlife Damage Reports, Martin Ottenheimer
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
When F. Robert Henderson, the Extension State Leader of Kansas' Wildlife Damage Control Program, asked me for assistance in setting up a microcomputer system that would enable him to organize and analyze wildlife damage reports, I was surprised. "Certainly," I thought, "it's not because I am a social anthropologist and in my travels around the world I deal with some pretty wild life" No, Bob knew about my work with microcomputers in Anthropology and since we have been friends for some years he also knew that I would talk with him about the problems in using microcomputers. He also knew …

Acoustical Signals Of Passalid Beetles: Complex Repertoires, Jack C. Schuster
Acoustical Signals Of Passalid Beetles: Complex Repertoires, Jack C. Schuster
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Adult passalids produced sounds of 7 basic structural types in at least 13 different behavioral contexts. A given type in a particular behavioral context may be termed a "signal". A total of 31 signals were recorded from 57 species. The presence of the same basic signals in both New World tribes suggests an early origin of the fundamental repertoire. The 14-signal repertoire of Odontotaenius disjunctus (Ill.) is larger than previously known for any arthropod and more extensive than those of many vertebrates. The large repertoire is associated with a high level of sociality. Dendroctonus beetles, similarly highly social, also have …

A Checklist Of Parasites Of California, Oregon, And Washington Marine And Estuarine Fishes, Milton S. Love, Mike Moser
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
This report is a summary of the published records of parasites found from the marine and estuarine fishes of California, Oregon, and Washington. Coverage has not been limited to the western United States, but rather includes parasite reports from throughout each fish's range. Included is a host-parasite list and parasite-host cross index.
We have produced this survey because we felt there was a need for a single source which would list all the parasites infecting marine and estuarine fish from California, Oregon, and Washington. Pertinent sources are scattered over a number of journals, covering many years. Workers find it time …

Talking With Young Children About Social Ideas, Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Anna Sargent Russell
Talking With Young Children About Social Ideas, Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Anna Sargent Russell
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
During the early childhood years, children’s understanding of many social and moral issues undergoes immense changes. We became interested in learning more about these changes and supporting them through our laboratory preschool curriculum. One major change, for example, is that children come to classify themselves and others into sex, age, and kinship categories and to learn social role expectations. Children also show greatly deepened understanding of such moral issues as fair sharing, obedience, authority, and friendship.
These areas of development are part of what can be called social cognition, or “children’s understanding of social behavior—what children think about their own …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The Air Force incurs over 1,900 bird strikes annually worth over 10 million dollars. Approximately 47% of all bird strikes happen in the airfield environment and as a result, the main thrust of our efforts is to control birds in that area. The Bird/Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) Team envisions expanding these efforts to include new developments which could aid in reducing bird/aircraft collisions.

Handbook On Bird Management And Control, Timothy J. Will 2 Lt.
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The US Air Force has over 200 bases world·wide. Each has its own indigenous and migratory species of birds. While the degree of hazard from these birds varies, the potential exists at all locations for damaged/destroyed equipment and health problems due to birds. To prepare Air Force pest managers on how to control birds, the Bird/Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) Team designed a reference manual called the Handbook on Bird Management and Control.
Wildlife Hazards To Aircraft, F. Nelson Swink
Wildlife Hazards To Aircraft, F. Nelson Swink
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
I am not going to talk about the past history of bird problems and the aviation industry; we're pretty well aware of what has happened. It was in 1960 that the U.S. really got some awareness because of the crash at Boston's Logan Airport. Following that was the first Fish and Wildlife Service involvement in bird problems at airports. For a number of years thereafter, the Fish and Wildlife Service Center at Laurel, Maryland had at least one staff biologist working with the FAA and specific airports to try and resolve their problems. Following the 1975 Canada incident with a …

Parakeet Damage To Sunflower In Pakistan, Abdul Aziz Khan, Shakeel Ahmad
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri (Scopoli) damage to sunflower heads was estimated in two provinces of Pakistan during the spring of 1981. In seven districts of Punjab the damage ranged from 5.0-23.28 %, with an average of 11.72 %. In rainfed areas the damge was as high as 71.43%, with average of 38.29%. In Sind the damage was on the higher order. In nine districts the damage ranged from 6.98-26.09%, with an average of 16.61 % and as high as 55% at some locations. Majority of fields (47%) had 10% damage or less, while less than 10% of fields had …

Escape From The Great Plains The Icelanders In North Dakota And Alberta, Howard Palmer
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Immigration historians in Canada and the United States are becoming aware of the need to look at immigration history within the larger context of North American history. Canadian immigration patterns have been affected, indirectly, almost as much by American immigration policy as by Canadian policy. Within many ethnic groups in North America, there has been a significant exchange of people and cultural patterns between Canada and the United States. Marcus Lee Hansen and John Brebner first looked at the interchange of people between Canada and the United States in their pioneering work, The Mingling of the Canadian and American Peoples …
