The Mexican Jaspe (Ikat) Rebozo: Comments On Its History, Significance And Prevalence, Virginia Davis
The Mexican Jaspe (Ikat) Rebozo: Comments On Its History, Significance And Prevalence, Virginia Davis
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The rebozo is a multi-function shawl worn by women in Mexico, 6 to 12 feet long and 24 to 34 inches wide. Approximately three-quarters of the length is woven; the remainder is fringe, most often elaborately worked: usually by half hitch or overhand knotting or by finger weaving. Place and identity are communicated by the yam, the color and design of the weaving, the style and technique of fringe finishing, and by the manner in which the rebozo is worn. My particular interest is the ikat rebozo. The Spanish for ikat is jaspe. Jaspe,(ikat), a system of resist dyeing a …
Cognitive Textiles Cloths: The Indigenous Classification Of Batak, Sandra A. Niessen
Cognitive Textiles Cloths: The Indigenous Classification Of Batak, Sandra A. Niessen
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
INTRODUCTION
Since completing a doctorate in anthropology on textiles produced by the Batak of North Sumatra (Niessen 1985), I have been supported by various post-doctoral scholarships (1) to produce an inventory of these same textiles. I am pleased to have this rare opportunity to tell you, a learned society of textile scholars, how I have gone about this task, my motives, goals, and methodology. I particularly would welcome feedback from you on what I see to be the theoretical underpinnings and implications of the project.
The inception of this project dates from a day in 1980 when I visited one …
Leadership And Nonverbal Behaviors Of Hispanic Females Across School Equity Environments, Helen A. Moore, Natalie K. Porter
Leadership And Nonverbal Behaviors Of Hispanic Females Across School Equity Environments, Helen A. Moore, Natalie K. Porter
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Nonverbal behaviors of Hispanic elementary school students and their peers were examined in a small-group cooperative task with a total of 202 subjects. Thirty-five randomly selected groups were videotaped in ten desegregated schools, each group was gender-homogeneous, with three Hispanic and three Anglo students. Analysis of the videotapes revealed that Hispanic females used less vertical and horizontal space than Anglo females, and were also less likely to verbally interrupt or physically intrude on other group members They had similar rates of handling the group resource cards and were given similar leadership scores by multi-ethnic trained observers. Among males, Hispanics are …

A Seed Midge Pest Of Big Bluestem, M. R. Carter, G. R. Manglitz, M. D. Rethwisch, Kenneth P. Vogel
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A Cecidomyiid midge reared from the panicles of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman (var. gerardii) at Mead, Neb., was identified as Contrarinia wattsi Gagne. This midge was previously known only from panicles of little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash) in New Mexico. In Nebraska, C. wattsi appears to have a minimum of 3 generations per season. Larvae of the earlier generations leave the florets after completing development, making it difficult to associate floret damage with the midge. Larvae of the last generation of a season remain in diapause, in the floret, throughout the winter. Evidence obtained …

Duration Of Fertility Of Turkeys Inseminated At Different Times After The Onset Of Photostimulation, M. R. Bakst
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
To investigate the relationship between photostimulation, ovary and oviduct weights, and oviducal sperm-storage tubule (SST) development and functional capacity, 33-week-old turkey hens were placed in four groups of 15 hens each. Each group was inseminated three times in 30 min with 50 × 106 spermatozoa (a total of 150 × 106 spermatozoa) on the day of photostimulation, or on Days 7, 14, or 21 after the onset of photostimulation (Groups A, B, C and D, respectively). From weeks 4 to 8 after photostimulation, 5 additional hens were inseminated each week and then killed 24 h later to determine …

An Annotated List Of The Vascular Plants Of Fontenelle Forest And Neale Woods In Eastern Nebraska, Marjorie Mueller Garabrandt
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
No detailed listing of the complete vascular flora of any woodland site along the Missouri River of east-central Nebraska has been published. This study provides a current annotated list of vascular flora at two private nature centers in the Omaha area, Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods. Totaling about 644 hectares, the two preserves are located on loess bluffs adjacent to the Missouri River valley, with Fontenelle Forest also containing floodplain forest. A total of 597 species are distributed among 100 families and 331 genera between the two sites, representing approximately one-third of the known vascular flora for Nebraska. Comparisons are …

Continuous, On-Line Dna Sequencing Using Oligodeoxynucleotide Primers With Multiple Fluorophores, John A. Brumbaugh, Lyle R. Middendorf, Daniel L. Grone, J. L. Ruth
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
A method for sequencing DNA by using a difluoresceinated primer and laser excitation is described. Dideoxy protocols have been determined that provide sequences for 600 bases starting with base 1 with <1% error in a single load. Electrophoresis is at 20 W and the bands are detected 24 cm from the bottom of the loading well with a scanning fluorescence detector. Bands are imaged on a TV screen in two dimensions. The sequences can be read from the TV screen manually or semiautomatically by using a simple software program. The system allows more bases to be read with a lower error rate than any other reported automated sequencing method.
Extremely Large And Slowly Processed Precursors To The Euglena Light-Harvesting Chlorophyll A/B Binding Proteins Of Photosystem Ii, Arnon Rikin, Steven D. Schwartzbach
Extremely Large And Slowly Processed Precursors To The Euglena Light-Harvesting Chlorophyll A/B Binding Proteins Of Photosystem Ii, Arnon Rikin, Steven D. Schwartzbach
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Antibody to the Euglena light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding protein of photosystem II (LHCPII) immunoprecipitated 207-, 161-, 122-, and 110-kDa proteins from total Euglena proteins pulse-labeled for 10 min with [35S]sulfate. The 25.6- and 27.2-kDa LHCPII were barely detectable in the immunoprecipitate. During a 40-min chase with unlabeled sulfate, the amount of radioactivity in the high molecular mass proteins decreased, and the amount of radioactivity in the 25.6- and 27.2-kDa LHCPII increased with kinetics consistent with a precursor-product relationship. The half-life of the high molecular mass proteins was ≈20 min. The major proteins immunoprecipitated from a nuclease-treated rabbit reticulocyte …

To sequence long strands of DNA, cloned strands having lengths longer than 100 bases are, in one embodiment, marked on one end with biotin. These strands are divided into 4 aliquots and each aliquot: (1) is uniquely chemically treated to randomly terminate the strands at the non-biotinylated end at a selected type of base; and (2) is moved continuously by electrophoresis through a different one of four identical channels. In the one embodiment, the strands are randomly terminated at a selected base type and they are moved into avidin, which due to high affinity, combines with the biotin marked ends …
Continuation Of A Deep Borehole Stress Measurement Profile Near The San Andreas Fault 1. Hydraulic Fracturing Stress Measurements At Hi Vista, Mojave Desert, California, Stephen H. Hickman, Mark D. Zoback, John H. Healy
Continuation Of A Deep Borehole Stress Measurement Profile Near The San Andreas Fault 1. Hydraulic Fracturing Stress Measurements At Hi Vista, Mojave Desert, California, Stephen H. Hickman, Mark D. Zoback, John H. Healy
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Hydraulic fracturing stress measurements were made in a 592-m-deep well at Hi Vista, California, 32 km from the San Andreas fault in the western Mojave Desert. The relative magnitudes of the horizontal principal stresses and the calculated overburden stress indicate that the stress regime at this site is transitional between thrust faulting and strike-slip faulting. The azimuths of the induced hydraulic fractureast Hi Vista exhibit considerable scatter, and the indicated direction of them aximum horizontal principal stress ranges from north-northeast to northwest. The measured magnitudes of the horizontal principal stresses and the horizontal deviatoric stress in this well are less …

ADAPT Lessons: Physics
A group of ADAPT students took the Starship Enterprise to the planet Kunzonia. When they arrived, they felt funny. Their heads seemed light and their feet seemed heavy. To try to understand the force of gravity on this planet, they made a simple swinging device fashioned from equipment on the starship. It was a flat bar with a pivot at the top and three equally-spaced holes along its length. The students used masses of 200 g, 400 g, and 600 g (which could be attached in the holes), a meter stick, and a timer, and let the bar swing to …

Suggestions Regarding Alcoholic Bird Collections, Peter F. Cannell, Murray R. Bakst, Cheryl S. Asa
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
One third of the known species of birds are unrepresented in alcoholic collections and nearly 70% of the rest are represented by 10 or fewer specimens (Wood et al. 1982, Zusi et al. 1982). Simply put, "existing anatomical specimens do not meet present and future research needs and . .. the situation must be corrected" (Jenkinson and Wood 1985:587). Actually, current alcoholic specimen resources may be even worse than indicated by Wood et al. (1982), despite commendable recent improvements. Here, we argue the urgent need for additional alcoholic specimens, stressing in particular quality of fixation, the importance of series, documentation …

The Giant Marmot Paenemarmota Sawrockensis (New Combination) In Hemphillian Deposits Of Northeastern Nebraska, M. R. Voorhies
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Lower dentitions essentially identical to the holotype of Marmota sawrockensis Hibbard, 1964, are described from the Santee and Devils Nest Airstrip local faunas (very late Hemphillian) in Knox County, Nebraska. These, along with newly-collected upper cheekteetb (previously unknown for tbis taxon), show that the species should be transferred to the genus Paenemarmota Hibbard and Schultz, 1948. P. sawrockensis appears to be structurally intermediate between ?Marmota nevadensis of the early Hemphillian and P. barbouri, a latest Hemphillian and Blancan species.
Defense Perspective On Individual Employment Rights, Thomas H. Barnard, Martin S. List
Defense Perspective On Individual Employment Rights, Thomas H. Barnard, Martin S. List
Nebraska Law Review
This article explores certain developments in the area of individual employees' rights. Some of these developments have not yet fully matured to "doctrines" or discrete principles of law. Rather, some of these developments are still mere judicial hints of things which are, perhaps, still to come. In a number of instances these hints are gleaned from the language of courts which, while rejecting a claim, set forth standards under which such a claim could be established. Moreover, these developments are discussed not so much to present an encyclopedic detailing of the current status of the law in the areas of …

Empowering A Feminist Ethic For Social Science Research: Nebraska Sociological Feminist Collective, Beth Hartung, Jane C. Ollenburger, Helen A. Moore, Mary Jo Deegan
Empowering A Feminist Ethic For Social Science Research: Nebraska Sociological Feminist Collective, Beth Hartung, Jane C. Ollenburger, Helen A. Moore, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
An ethic defines the general nature of the morals. rules and standards governing the conduct and choices of individuals as well as members of a profession (Oxford English Dictionary 1971). A feminist ethic for social science research specifically orders these general issues to recognize and account for wimmin's continued oppression within a patriarchal social system and academic disciplines. A feminist ethic identifies this continued oppression as a major contradiction of our research. work and social structure. Within social sciences generally, and sociology specifically. little attention is paid to the underlying patriarchal ethic which informs theory, method and substantive issues. …

Research By Bureaucracy: Hattie Plum Williams And The National Commission On Law Observance And Enforcement, 1929-1931, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper explores the bureaucratized research activities (1929-1931) of the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement (NCLOE) from the perspective of Hattie Plum Williams' sociobiographical experience. Williams was a doctoral student of George E. Howard and earned her Ph.D. in 1915 -- the ftrst doctorate in sociology awarded by the University of Nebraska. That same year, she joined the Nebraska faculty and eventually became Chair of the Department (1922-1928).2 In 1931, at age 53, this full professor was called upon be an unpaid fieldworker, gathering data according to rigid protocols stipulated by the NCLOE. Archival reconstruction of Williams' "view …
Effects Of Gender, Ethnicity, And School Equity On Students' Leadership Behaviors In A Group Game, Helen A. Moore
Effects Of Gender, Ethnicity, And School Equity On Students' Leadership Behaviors In A Group Game, Helen A. Moore
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Leadership skills and the perception of leadership by students and classroom teachers are examined in 10 desegregated elementary schools. The 10 schools were first divided into "high-equity" and "low-equity" schools based on the extent to which they met "integrative" educational criteria, such as multicultural curricula, multiethnic staff, minority parent involvement, and other factors. A random sample of 202 Hispanic and Anglo students participated in a cooperative group task in gender-segregated groups composed of 3 students from each ethnic group. Results indicate that trained observers found gender differences in nonverbal and verbal leadership behaviors among students across the schools, including higher …

Purification Of Maturation-Promoting Factor, An Intracellular Regulator Of Early Mitotic Events, Manfred J. Lohka, Marianne K. Hayes, James L. Maller
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Maturation-promoting factor causes germinal vesicle breakdown when injected into Xenopus oocytes and can induce metaphase in a cell-free system. The cell-free assay was used to monitor maturation-promoting factor during its purification from unfertilized Xenopus eggs. Ammonium sulfate precipitation and six chromatographic procedures resulted in a preparation purified >3000-fold that could induce germinal vesicle breakdown within 2 hr when injected into cycloheximide- treated oocytes. Proteins of 45 kDa and 32 kDa were correlated with fractions of highest activity in both assays. These fractions contained a protein kinase activity able to phosphorylate the endogenous 45-kDa protein, as well as histone Hi, phosphatase …

Hydraulic Fracturing In Situ Stress Measurements To 2.1 Km Depth At Cajon Pass, California, John H. Healy, Mark D. Zoback
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Stress measurements to 2.1km reveal stress changes with depth that cannot be explained by an elastic response to uniform crustal strain. The data at about 1 km depth suggest that the stress is limited by the frictional strength of rock and is perturbed at greater depths by faults which intersect the borehole. The stress
data indicate that there is little or no right-lateral shear stress acting on planes parallel to the San Andreas Fault.

Characteristics Of Buddhist Pilgrimages In Sri Lanka, Robert Stoddard
Geography Program: Faculty Publications
Although pilgrimages have been studied by geographers for many decades, we still are uncertain about the universality of certain basic geographic characteristics of this religious activity. It is true that NOLAN (1983; 1984; forthcoming) has provided a wealth of data on Christian pilgrimages, especially in Western Europe, and several geographers have analyzed aspects of the hajj. But, there have been relatively few studies about groups in many other settings, such as the Muslems in the Philippines, the Christians in India, and the Hindus in Africa. We need to expand our collective knowledge about pilgrimages by studying them in a wide …

Colorimetric Determination Of Cyanide In Enzyme-Hydrolyzed Extracts Of Dried Sorghum Leaves, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, Robert M. Hill
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to develop a simple and effective procedure for assaying large numbers of sorghum leaf samples for their potential to release cyanide. The procedure involves drying the tissue at 75 °C (this was accomplished without loss of the cyanogenic glucoside dhurrin), grinding the dry tissue, extracting with water, digesting the extract with an almond meal extract to release cyanide, and determining cyanide in the digest colorimetrically. Results obtained were comparable to those based on distillation of digested samples and potentiometric determination of cyanide in the distillates. The equipment and supplies required for the procedure are …
