A Decade Of Use Of Livestock Guarding Dogs, Raymond Coppinger, Lorna Coppinger, Gail Langeloh, Lori Gettler, Jay Lorenz
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)
Results from a ten-year study of livestock guarding dogs show that the dogs are an effective tool for reducing predation. Average reduction attained by five strains of dogs (Anatolian Shepherds, Maremmas, Shar Planinetz, Anatolian/ Shars, Maremma/Shars) was 64%, with predation reduced to zero for 53% of reporting producers in 1986. Variations in trustworthy, attentive and protective behavior of the dogs were breed-specific, and offer mechanisms for improving the system.
Photographic Records — Their Importance In Today's Environmentally Sensitive Bird Management Programs, Charles W. Areson
Photographic Records — Their Importance In Today's Environmentally Sensitive Bird Management Programs, Charles W. Areson
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 13th (1988)
We are living in a day of change. Environmental awareness is a part of our everyday life in a way unprecedented in history. The courts, in their infinite wisdom, have initiated the joint and several liability (deep pocket) rules that make everyone at risk in almost all situations. Bird management programs, by their very nature, are extremely sensitive. Any project, if not evaluated, planned, carried out, and documented properly can result in adverse regulatory agency action, bad publicity, and even fines or lawsuits. Proper photographic documentation can play a vital part in helping to provide the necessary records to help …
Book Review: Managing Macroeconomic Policy: The Johnson Presidency By James E. Anderson And Jared E. Hazelton, Ann Mari May
Book Review: Managing Macroeconomic Policy: The Johnson Presidency By James E. Anderson And Jared E. Hazelton, Ann Mari May
College of Business: Faculty Publications
The emergence of active countercyclical stabilization policies in the 1960s presented politicians with the problem of formulating economically desirable policies that were politically feasible as well. Economists have traditionally concerned themselves with the technical aspects of stabilization policy, leaving the analysis of actual policy formation to political scientists. James Anderson and Jared Hazelton, in Managing Macroeconomic Policy: The Johnson Presidency, present us with an analysis of macroeconomic policy in the Johnson presidency that bridges this gap by attempting to determine how the "intermixture of economic and political considerations shaped and limited the actions of those involved in the development …
Frugivorous And Animalivorous Bats (Microchiroptera): Dental And Cranial Adaptations, Patricia W. Freeman
Frugivorous And Animalivorous Bats (Microchiroptera): Dental And Cranial Adaptations, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The most derived fruit-eating bats have small canines, wide palates and molars with a distinctive labial rim. Paracone and metacone have moved from a dilambdodont position in the middle of the tooth to the labial side of the tooth where they form the labial cutting edge. Along with the well-developed and close fitting labial cutting edges of the premolars and canines, this cutting edge skirts nearly the entire perimeter of the palate. The labial rim of the lower teeth fit inside the labial rim of the upper teeth like two cookie cutters nesting one inside the other. Frugivores have a …

Analysis Of The Virulence Of Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants In The Rat Model System, Raul G. Barletta, Suzanne M. Michalek, Roy Curtis Iii
Analysis Of The Virulence Of Streptococcus Mutans Serotype C Gtfa Mutants In The Rat Model System, Raul G. Barletta, Suzanne M. Michalek, Roy Curtis Iii
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Streptococcus mutans serotype c gtfA gene encodes a 55-kilodalton protein which catalyzes the synthesis of a small glucan (1.5 kilodaltons) from sucrose (J. P. Robeson, R. G. Barletta, and R. Curtiss III, J. Bacteriol. 153:211-221, 1983). To investigate the role of the GtfA enzyme in virulence, we constructed S. mutans gtfA mutants from three cariogenic serotype c strains. A plasmid that carried an erythromycin resistance determinant and an internal fragment of the gtfA gene but that was unable to replicate in streptococci was used to transform S. mutans. The erythromycin-resistant transformants carried a partial duplication of the internal …
Perspectives On Process In Plant Virology, Myron K. Brakke
Perspectives On Process In Plant Virology, Myron K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The editors asked that I write a chapter on landmarks in plant virology, a topic that has been covered by several authors, for example by Henderson Smith (89), Bawden (9), Holmes (51), Markham (62), Harrison (44), Black (12), and Matthews (64). In 1 938, the first of these authors, Henderson Smith (89), divided his presidential address to the Society for Applied Biology between the control of plant-virus diseases and the nature of plant viruses. Progress since then has been much more rapid in the latter than in the former area. Henderson Smith could easily understand today's literature on losses, control, …

Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer
Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer
German Language and Literature Papers
Uwe Johnson is seldom discussed as a GDR author, for it was not until after his 1959 decision «to relocate,» as he put it, to the West that Johnson became established as a literary force. Literary historians often mention Johnson along with Gunther Grass and Martin Walser when they discuss the important novelists that burst onto the literary scene in West Germany at the end of the 1950’s. But Johnson’s work—from Mutamaßsunmgen über Jakob to Jahrestage—is unthinkable without his education and experiences in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. With the posthumous publication of his first novel Ingrid …

Drought Management: The Role Of Near- Real Time Weather Data, Donald A. Wilhite, Kenneth G. Hubbard
Drought Management: The Role Of Near- Real Time Weather Data, Donald A. Wilhite, Kenneth G. Hubbard
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
The ability to collect weather data in near-real time has improved because of technological advances, enabling weather data users to obtain more weather data over wider areas, and in a more timely fashion. The number of near-real time climate networks is increasing as new applications are found for climate data. More than fifteen states in the United States have established automated weather station networks. This paper presents an overview of recent developments in automated weather data collection in the United States and gives a detailed description of the network in Nebraska.
Near-real time weather data has many applications in agricultural …

Distribution, Abundance, And Biomass Of Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) In Lake St. Clair, Thomas F. Nalepa, Jeffrey M. Gauvin
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
A mussel population survey was conducted in Lake St. Clair with divers using SCUBA to sample at 29 stations throughout the lake. Mean abundance was 2 m-2 and mean biomass was 4.4 g dry wt m-2. Of the 18 species collected, Lampsilis radiata siliquoidea was by far the most abundant, accounting for 45% of all individuals. The age-frequency distribution of L. r. siliquoidea was dominated by individuals between 9 and 12 years old. In contrast, the second most abundant species, Leptodea fragilis, showed yearly variation in recruitment with no apparent trends in year class strength. Annual …

Plans Of Action For Southeast District Issues 1988 - 1992
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
The Southeast Research and Extension District Alternative Agricultural Opportunities Team met on Thursday, September 15th and reviewed the state plan for the initiative "Increasing Diversity with Alternate Crop and Livestock Enterprises".
The team members present decided that the state plan would meet the planning needs for the Southeast District if it was supplemented with a list of enterprises which have the greatest potential for additional expansion in Southeast Nebraska.
The following alternate crop and livestock enterprises were identified by the committee as having the best opportunity for additional development in the district. In crops; asparagus, melons, and onions were identified …

Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin
Transmutations Of The Tartan: Attributed Meanings To Tartan Design, Richard Martin
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
We all associate meaning with textile designs. If we can see the principles of Revolutionary zeal and the sanction of family life and work in one textile design, we can perceive the explicit Modernism of another and realize that in the complex decisions that comprise the creation of a textile, we have fashioned our world and its values. Perhaps the textile is small, but its condensed values and meaning may be a more clarified perception about the world than most others. For many, such as Roland Barthes, textiles and clothing can thereby be described as a sign system offering a …
Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund
Designing Among The Navajo: Ethno Aesthetics In Weaving, Ann Lane Hedlund
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Navajo weaving from northeastern Arizona and contiguous areas if the American Southwest is widely recognized for colors and patterns that range from subtle shades to dynamic brilliance, from soft stripes to bold geometries to fanciful pictorials. The apparent diversity in this native textile art, developed over the past three centuries, has defied any unified description of The Navajo Style. While Navajo blankets and rugs may be superficially categorized and classified, put into chronological sequences and evolutionary schemes, when the textiles are viewed synoptically, the delineation of Navajo aesthetics remains a formidable task.
The search for a Navajo style and sense …
Reduced Co2/O2 Specificity Of Ribulose-Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase In A Temperature-Sensitive Chloroplast Mutant Of Chlamydomonas, Zhixiang Chen, Chris J. Chastain, Souhail R. Al-Abed, Raymond Chollet, Robert J. Spreitzer
Reduced Co2/O2 Specificity Of Ribulose-Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase In A Temperature-Sensitive Chloroplast Mutant Of Chlamydomonas, Zhixiang Chen, Chris J. Chastain, Souhail R. Al-Abed, Raymond Chollet, Robert J. Spreitzer
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The Chlamydomonas reinhardtii chloroplast mutant 68-4PP is phenotypically indistinguishable from wild type at 25°C but fails to grow photosynthetically at 35°C. It had about 30% of the wild-type level of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39) holoenzyme and carboxylase activity when grown at 25°C, but less than 15% when grown at 35°C. Pulse-labeling with 35S showed that the decrease in enzyme level at the restrictive temperature was not a result of reduced synthesis of enzyme subunits. The CO2/O2 specificity factor (VcKo/VoKc, where Vc and Vo are Vmax …
Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples
Can We Guarantee The Safety Of Genetically Engineered Organisms In The Environment?, Kathleen H. Keeler, Frances E. Sharples
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Can we guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms in the environment? To anticipate my remarks, the answer to the title question is “No, we cannot guarantee the safety of genetically engineered organisms released into the environment.” Indeed, it is a tenet of the scientific method that nothing can be proved, only disproved. Thus, we can never show that a release will be safe. We could only show that it would be unsafe, if that were the case. However, if the question is posed differently, for example, can we safely release genetically engineered organisms into the environment?, the answer is …

Why are so many students poor questioners -- why do they lack habits and skills in so fundamental a human activity as inquiry? And why, if it is true that the best teaching capitalizes on students' natural curiosity, do so many students appear to lack the very gift we wish to tap?
