Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Milk And Fat Yields Of Dairy Cattle In Spain And The United States, M. J. Carabano, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Wiggans, R. Alenda May 1989

Estimation Of Genetic Parameters For Milk And Fat Yields Of Dairy Cattle In Spain And The United States, M. J. Carabano, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Wiggans, R. Alenda

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Interaction of genotype with environment was studied with 10,780 Spanish production records (daughters of 210 Holstein-Friesian bulls) and two subsets of United States data (800,821 records with 1170 sires and 762,152 records with 1186 sires). Only 74 bulls had daughter records in both Spanish and United States data. Genetic and phenotypic (co)variances and correlations and heritability for milk and fat yields were estimated both within country and between countries with countries considered as separate traits (joint analysis). (Co)variance components were estimated with a REML procedure. Heritability estimates for milk and fat in the Spanish population (.16 and .14, within country; …

Agribusiness Skills Required By Agriculture Students As Perceived By Nebraska Vocational Agriculture Instructors And Agribusiness Managers, David R. Spotanski, Richard M. Foster Apr 1989

Agribusiness Skills Required By Agriculture Students As Perceived By Nebraska Vocational Agriculture Instructors And Agribusiness Managers, David R. Spotanski, Richard M. Foster

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Agribusiness instruction in vocational agriculture programs can help prepare employees for service related job opportunities in agriculture. Many employment opportunities can be found in occupations related to food and fiber production, transportation, processing, packaging, storing, advertising, and distributing. These jobs are numerous and diverse, strengthening the link between farm products and the consumer (Steward, 1987).

The need for trained employees in non-farm agricultural occupations has been well documented in the decade of the 1960's (Williams, 1971). Cooper (1985), reported there is a need for continuous expansion and revision of competencies for employment in agriculture/agribusiness occupations. Birkenholz and Stewart (1986), found …

Farm Credit Competencies Needed And Possessed By Selected Nebraska Young Farmers/Ranchers, Allen G. Blezek, Daniel H. Post

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Agriculture has changed a great deal, particularly during the past five years. Lower prices for commodities and higher production costs, including higher interest rates, have made it necessary for farmers to become better financial managers. "The farm of the future will be treated financially like any other business--it will have to demonstrate profitability before a bank will finance its operations" (Congress of the United States, 1986).

The Iowa Department of Agriculture (1985) and others concluded that rapid economic and social change is not a new phenomenon in agriculture. Agriculture has in fact been adjusting to conditions of greater efficiency since …

Habitat Use And Diet Analysis Of Breeding Common Barn Owls In Western Nebraska, Joseph A. Gubanyi M.S. Apr 1989

Habitat Use And Diet Analysis Of Breeding Common Barn Owls In Western Nebraska, Joseph A. Gubanyi M.S.

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I studied barn owl (Tyto alba) breeding biology in western Nebraska 1984-1986. I had greatest success capturing males (56% success) at night using trap doors at nest sites and females (91 % success) using hoop nets at nest sites during the day. Barn owls removed 16 of 23 tail-mounted radios. Eight birds were radio-tracked for 7-14.5 hours. The mean foraging range was 198 ha (32- 299 ha, n = 8) with < 1 % overlap among birds from adjacent nest sites. Field-tested telemetry error was high (mean displacements of radio-locations for 2 birds were 208 and 241 m). I found no relationship between percent cover in foraging habitat and reproductive success. I identified 10,140 prey items from 15 nest sites and found both annual and seasonal variation in barn owl diets. Microtus ochrogaster occurred most frequently (32.7%) and increased in the diet from 17.6 to 27.2 to 43.5% 1984-1986. M. ochrogaster and Perognathus hispidus annual frequencies were …

The Style Of Late Cenozoic Deformation At The Eastern Front Of The California Coast Ranges, Carl M. Wentworth, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The 1983 Coalinga earthquake occurred at the eastern boundary of the California Coast Ranges in response to northeast directed thrusting. Such movements over the past 2 Ma have produced Coalinga anticline by folding above the blind eastern tip of the Coalinga thrust zone. The 600-km length of the Coast Ranges boundary shares a common structural setting that involves westward upturn of Cenozoic and Cretaceou strata at the eastern front of the Coast Ranges and a major, southwest facing step in the basement surface beneath the western Great Valley. Like Coalinga anticline, Pliocene and Quaternary folding and faulting along the rest …

Semi-Implicit And Fully Implicit Shock-Capturing Methods For Nonequilibrium Flows, Helen C. Yee, Judy L. Shinn Mar 1989

Semi-Implicit And Fully Implicit Shock-Capturing Methods For Nonequilibrium Flows, Helen C. Yee, Judy L. Shinn

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Some numerical aspects of finite-difference algorithms for nonlinear multidimensional hyperbolic conservation laws with stiff nonhomogeneous (source) terms are discussed. If the stiffness is entirely dominated by the source term, a semi-implicit shock-capturing method is proposed. However, if the stiffness is not solely dominated by the source terms, a fully implicit method would be a more efficient solution procedure. The primary motivation for constructing these schemes was to address large systems of thermally and chemically nonequilibrium flows in the hypersonic regime. Due to the unique structure of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for fluid flows of this type, the computation can be …

Differential Cross Sections For Ejection Of Electrons From Rare Gases By 7.5- 150-Kev Protons, Wen-Qin Cheng, M. Eugene Rudd, Ying-Yuan Hsu Mar 1989

Differential Cross Sections For Ejection Of Electrons From Rare Gases By 7.5- 150-Kev Protons, Wen-Qin Cheng, M. Eugene Rudd, Ying-Yuan Hsu

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Absolute cross sections for the ejection of electrons by ;proton impact that are differential in the angle and energy of the electrons have been measured for :helium, neon, and krypton. The primary energy ranged from 7.5 to 150 keV, the angles from 10° to 160°, and the measured energies from 1 to 550 eV. These data along with earlier data on argon are used to study the systematics of proton impact ionization of the rare gases. An analytical model is employed to correlate and systematize the cross-section differential in ejected-electron energy. For low-energy collisions the angular distribution of electrons ejected …

Animal Damage Control: The Challenge Of The 90'S, Jack H. Benymanz

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The talk identifies the challenges of the 90's as: to fully professionalize the policies and practice of animal damage control; to provide a responsible and acceptable level of control; to gain executive and legislative support; and to improve public acceptance. It points up a number of obstacles and identifies several steps necessary to meet the challenges.

Kansas Attitudes On Prairie Dog Control, Charles D. Lees, F. Robert Henderson Feb 1989

Kansas Attitudes On Prairie Dog Control, Charles D. Lees, F. Robert Henderson

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

In Kansas prairie dog management is primarily determined by private individuals and local government agencies. We conducted a mail survey of 350 affected landowners as a means to evaluate the effectiveness of current prairie dog control. The same survey was also sent to 350 randomly selected state residents within the general prairie dog range. We evaluated people's perceptions of prairie dogs, the effectiveness of control methods, costs of control, and reasons for poor response to control techniques. Results indicate people that have previously been involved in prairie dog control on lands they manage have different opinions about prairie dogs than …

Black-Footed Ferret Recovery, Dean E. Biggins, Ronald A. Crew Feb 1989

Black-Footed Ferret Recovery, Dean E. Biggins, Ronald A. Crew

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The captive population of black-footed ferrets increased from 24 to 58 animals in 1988, and was split to provide the species added protection against extinction. Experimental reintroductions may begin in 1991. In some areas, "experimental population" designations as authorized under Section 10 (j) of the Endangered Species Act may be used to provide wider management latitude. The Black-footed Ferret Interstate Coordinating Committee oversees much of the work related to reintroduction. Expanded effort to locate wild ferrets now includes a $10,000 reward offer. Research focuses on captive breeding, reintroduction techniques, disease, and habitat. A new Recovery Plan was approved in 1988.

Planning For Animal Damage Control Programs Within The Animal And Plant Health Inspection Service, Philip S. Gipson, Gary P. Combs

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The Animal Damage Control Unit (ADC) and the 10 other units of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have undergone major reorganization. Emphasis is placed on planning and risk analysis. Four levels of planning have been identified: (1) strategic planning for the Agency, (2) strategic planning for each of the 11 units, (3) program design and risk analysis, and (4) operational planning.

An Assessment Of The Urban Wildlife Problem, William D. Fitzwater Feb 1989

An Assessment Of The Urban Wildlife Problem, William D. Fitzwater

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Basic urban wildlife problems include: proper identification of species, shift from agrarian to urban society, different interpretations of humaneness, compassion for individual rather than a population as a whole, and public ignorance of urban pest management. Positive values are esthetics and environmental education opportunities. Negative values are disease transmission, life/injury-threatening situations, damage to buildings/other property, water structures/quality, petty annoyances, and indirect economics.

Transactivation Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Promoter By Human Herpesvirus 6, Rebecca Horvat, Charles Wood, N. Balachandran Feb 1989

Transactivation Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Promoter By Human Herpesvirus 6, Rebecca Horvat, Charles Wood, N. Balachandran

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are often infected with a number of other heterologous viruses in addition to the initial human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and these agents could act as potential reactivating agents of latent HIV. A new antigenically distinct herpesvirus, designated human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), has recently been isolated from patients with AIDS and has been shown to infect a number of different human cells, specifically human T cells, B cells, and glial cells. Since these are some of the same cells that harbor the AIDS virus, it is quite important to determine any interaction between this …

Biochemical And Morphological Characteristics In Maturing Achenes From Purple-Hulled And Oilseed Sunflower Cultivars, Roger W. Bullard, Paul P. Woronecki, Richard A. Dolbeer, J. Russell Mason Jan 1989

Biochemical And Morphological Characteristics In Maturing Achenes From Purple-Hulled And Oilseed Sunflower Cultivars, Roger W. Bullard, Paul P. Woronecki, Richard A. Dolbeer, J. Russell Mason

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The blackbird feeding preference for sunflower oilseed variety Jacques Discovery (JD) over purple-hulled Neagra de Cluj (NdC) has been attributed to anthocyanin. To test this hypothesis, we compared biochemical and morphological properties in the achene over the maturation period. Comparisons included total phenols, anthocyanin, tannin, fat/oil, protein, nonstructural sugars, and phytomelanin contents, as well as mass properties and moisture content. Only three differences were observed: (1) Hull mass was significantly higher for NdC than JD. (2) Anthocyanins were synthesized by NdC only. (3) JD was higher in oil content. Each of these factors may play a role in reduced preferences …
