Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson
Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Teacher education has too largely concerned itself with a study of schooling rather than a study of education. In the next generation, given the concerns that I’ve talked about, we’re going to have to look much more intensively, on the one hand, at how much human beings learn as biological creatures and, on the other hand, at all the cultural and legal constraints on learning that exist. We will look at education in industry, in the community, in community action programs, in the tribal council, education through ritual, and through play, as well as through public schooling. The job of …
Comparative Studies Of Socialization, Patricia Draper
Comparative Studies Of Socialization, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
This paper will not attempt a comprehensive review of the recent literature on socialization. Rather, it will deal with four areas of the comparative study of childhood which have particular interest to this writer: systematic ethnographic reports on child life in non-Western societies; education and anthropology; cognitive style and socialization; and socialization for sex role. As a further means of narrowing the potential range of this review, the author will exclude most reports of infant, adolescent, and adult socialization.
A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Sex Differences In The Behavior Of Children Aged Three Through 11, Beatrice Whiting, Carolyn P. Edwards
A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Sex Differences In The Behavior Of Children Aged Three Through 11, Beatrice Whiting, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This paper uses the cross-cultural, systematic child observations of the Six Culture Study, led by John and Beatrice Whiting of Harvard University, to investigate the validity of the stereotypes of sex differences about nurturance, aggression, compliance, dependency, and other behaviors. The children aged 3 – 11 years, were observed in natural settings in seven different parts of the world. The analysis indicates that there are universal sex differences in the children’s behavior, but the differences are not consistent nor as great as the studies of American and Western European children would suggest. Furthermore, socialization pressure in the form of task …

Crowding Among Hunter-Gatherers: The !Kung Bushmen, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Highly crowded living conditions exist among the !Kung Bushmen, hunter-gatherers who live on the edges of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South-West Africa. The !Kung appear to be crowded by choice, and biological indicators of stress are absent. Data indicate that residential crowding alone does not produce symptoms of pathological stress.

Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton
Black Family Structures And Functions: An Empirical Examination Of Some Suggestions Made By Billingsley, J. Allen Williams Jr., Robert Stockton
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Andrew Billingsley in Black Families in White America has criticized much of the previous research on the black family, saying that social scientists have ignored the structural variation among families and have focused on a very limited number of family functions. To correct what he believes to be a distorted picture of the black family, he has suggested a typology of family structures and a large number of family functions which should be taken into consideration. This paper, based upon data collected from 321 black households, uses Billingsley’s typology to examine the association between family structures and functions. It is …
The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller
The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller
Department of English: Faculty Publications
I have offered evidence that name-calling is a linguistic act which correlates the assumption of a status-relation between speaker and addressee with the use of terms marked (+abusive). To call someone a bastard, for.this reason, is not understood as the attempt to categorize him according to some term whose meaning, in the ordinary sense, is a list of lexical features. Rather it is the attempt to categorize him as without status in relation to the speaker himself, in defiance of his expectations, and because he has himself deserved it by himself invoking such a right over the speaker. This understanding …

Early Influences In American Indian Linguistics, Sharon E. Clark
Early Influences In American Indian Linguistics, Sharon E. Clark
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Although John Wesley Powell's Indian Linguistic Families of America. North of Mexico, published in 1891 stands as the basis from which modern classifications have emerged, the study of American Indian languages had begun over two hundred and fifty years earlier.
The earliest work on American Indian languages was done by missionaries. In the spirit of conquest and conversion, the missionaries learned the Indian languages to more readily facilitate their own goals. However, as Clark Wissler notes, "a missionary might learn a language and even translate the Bible into it without concern about linguistic science: on the other hand …
Ethnoscience As A Methodology In Indian Education: A Sioux And Apache Example, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Ethnoscience As A Methodology In Indian Education: A Sioux And Apache Example, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The utility of ethnoscience as a methodology to improve American Indian education programs is discussed. Data from two native American communities is presented, focusing on the cultural conflict prevalent in their schools. The San Carlos Apache, a reservation-tribe of Western Apache in Arizona and an off-reservation community of Oglala Sioux from North-western Nebraska, are compared, emphasis being placed on the linguistic and cultural problems prohibiting effective education. Specific ethnosemantic studies are cited for their illumination of cognitive dissonance between native Americans and non-Indian teachers.
The Concept Of Caste: Cross-Cultural Applications, Bruce Labrack
The Concept Of Caste: Cross-Cultural Applications, Bruce Labrack
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The concept of caste has undergone a thorough re-examination by social scientists in the past three decades. The result has been a redefinition of caste and the application of the term 'caste' to social situations found outside the Indian subcontinent. A review of some of the varieties of caste reported in Japan, Africa, Tibet, Korea and North America are outlined and brief historical summaries illustrate the differing conditions under which these systems arose. Utilizing a broad definition of caste, the structural components and concomitants of castes are compared using the features of birth-ascription, endogamy, ritual pollution and traditional occupation. These …
Ritual Appraisement In White Singles’ Bars: From A Woman’S Perspective, Mary Jo Deegan
Ritual Appraisement In White Singles’ Bars: From A Woman’S Perspective, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Singles bars provide a unique opportunity to observe sexual norms and mores in action. This set of expectations is particularly visible in these spots because they accentuate the mobility and "meat market" aspects of selection of dating partners. The meat market bargaining process is an important part of this ritual introduction, and it is a major organizing concept in the analysis.

Experiment At Nebraska The First Two Years Of A Cluster College, Robert E. Knoll, Robert D. Brown
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
In November 1968 the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska was asked to react to a document coming from a faculty-student committee charged with examining the feasibility of establishing an innovating college on the Lincoln campus. It attempted to spell out the need for such innovation, and it offered a plan for fulfilling the need that it delineated. This is that document:
1
Within the past generation a new kind of student, a new kind of faculty, and a new kind of university have developed. To meet the challenges which these changes present and to provide for an …

The Oregon Ground Squirrel In Northeastern California; Its Adaptation To A Changing Agricultural Environment, Loring White
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 5th (1972)
As early as 1918, populations of the Oregon ground squirrel [Citellus oregonus (Merriam)] were reported to be increasing in northeastern California, presumably because of “the extensive clearing of the sagebrush and seeding of these clearings to grain and hay." Populations of this locally important field rodent have continued to increase since that time with the further development of agriculture. Observations of the author during the past quarter of a century indicate that ground squirrels in the most intensively farmed areas are changing their habits; and may be evolving into an ecotype markedly dissimilar to that which existed in the pristine …

Residential Environment Studies Relevant For Research Programs. An Annotated Bibliography. Economic, Aesthetic And Environmental Aspects Of Family Housing, Florence S. Walker
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
At the time NCR-54 Committee was activated in 1966, the membership was charged with recommending new directions for housing research by home economists and others associated with Agricultural Experiment Stations. Basic to this charge, the committee determined to compile a list of housing research publications which had had an impact on the teaching and research responsibilities as perceived by the committee members. The compilation took the form of abstracts of research on selected aspects of housing: i.e., design and aesthetic, physical-physiological and socioeconomic, as well as influential general studies.
Seriation Of Certain Arikara Villages, J.J. Hoffman
Seriation Of Certain Arikara Villages, J.J. Hoffman
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Selected villages of 18th century Arikara Indians are seriated on the basis of presumably sensitive pottery traits. Two agreeing temporal models, one statistical and one graphical, are derived from the manipulated data. The statistical model is further abstracted to present a relative temporal placement of the individual villages. The models and their interpretations differ somewhat from previous work on the subject. Certain ideas regarding modification of the techniques employed are discussed. A few thoughts are also injected regarding the use of temporal models, seriation, and statistics in general for the interpretation of past behavior.

Thermal, Turbidity, And Ph Conditions Of The Upper White River: Sioux And Dawes Counties, Nebraska., Steve Cassells
Thermal, Turbidity, And Ph Conditions Of The Upper White River: Sioux And Dawes Counties, Nebraska., Steve Cassells
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Research indicates inverse correlations between pH and turbidity when the sediment is primarily of an organic nature. Siliceous sediment does not follow the same curve. Definite influences of cultivated lands on water turbidity are shown in the lower portion of the study area. Temperatures vary considerably within short distances, with the cause only speculative at this time. The study gives basis for the inferences on preferred habitats of trout and catfish.
Time, Space, And Climate In The Middle Missouri, John E. Ehrenhard
Time, Space, And Climate In The Middle Missouri, John E. Ehrenhard
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
It has been postulated that some cultural movements or conditions may be correlated with climatic episodes. One area where such correlations can be attempted lies in the Dakotas along the Missouri River mainstem where there is an apparent correspondence between dates of certain widespread climatic events and sequential episodes of native cultural history. During the period ranging from A.D. 700-1200 and from A.D. 1300 on into the nineteenth century significant changes of a climatic nature may have affected Indian societies.
The correlation of some climatic episodes or conditions with cultural movements is being attempted in an area of the Dakotas …

Melvin Randolph Gilmore, Incipient Cultural Ecologist: A Biographic Analysis, David L. Erickson
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This thesis will be a study in microcosm of Melvin R. Gilmore’s Nebraska research. The study analyzes his ethnobiological field work and writings in terms of biographic factors.Gilmore’s ethnobiological research manifests both bioecological and cultural ecological rationales. The thesis shows that Gilmore’s pioneering work in ethnobiology, together with studies by Harrington and others, laid the groundwork for modern cultural ecology as practiced by Julian Steward and others. The author of the thesis used original documents from the Nebraska State Historical Society in his research.
While in Nebraska Gilmore developed an interest in ethnobiology. His initial ethnobotanical field work was related …

A Bibliography Of The Aboriginal Archeology Of Nebraska, Donald J. Blakeslee
Nebraska Anthropologist
I have tried to make this Bibliography as complete as possible, including material from surrounding states pertinent to the archeological problems of Nebraska and references which pertain more to the history of Nebraska archeology than to its content.
In compiling this list, I have used previous bibliographies by Robert W. Neuman (1962b, 1968) and Jerome E. Petsche (1968) which deal in part with Nebraska archeology.

The Teaching Of Economics - A Radical Approach To Economics: Basis For A New Curriculum, Richard C. Edwards, Arthur Macewan
The Teaching Of Economics - A Radical Approach To Economics: Basis For A New Curriculum, Richard C. Edwards, Arthur Macewan
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to outline a radical approach to economics and to suggest how several important social problems might be dealt with in that framework. Our effort to develop a new curriculum is motivated by the conviction that the orthodox approach to economics cannot deal with the important problems of modern society.
Orthodox economic analysis as presented from the elementary course through the graduate seminar is based upon an acceptance of the status quo in social relations. Microanalysis presupposes the individualistic ownership and decision-making systems typical of capitalist societies, and in this narrow context the pecuniary behavior …
Trapping - The Oldest Profession, William D. Fitzwater
Trapping - The Oldest Profession, William D. Fitzwater
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)
While trapping is probably the oldest pursuit of man, predating hunting and agriculture, it has not undergone many drastic changes since the first primitive attempts. An arbitrary classification of traps [improvised traps, snares-and nets, cage traps, spring traps and glues] is discussed and examples of each group given. As the behavioral and physical characteristics of vertebrate animals vary so much, it is impossible to discuss trapping procedures in any detail, but certain principles apply to most situations. These are: (1) need for an understanding of the target species' habit patterns, (2) selection of a trap size and design suitable for …
