G97-1326 Crabapples For Nebraska Landscapes, Don Steinegger, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the selection, care and disease possibilities of crabapples.

Many of the diminutive flowering trees are not hardy in Nebraska. One notable exception: the ornamental crabapple tree (Malus). By carefully selecting the planting site and the cultivar, the beauty of flowering crabs can be enjoyed in any part of the state.

Regardless of the season, crabapples lend landscape color and interest. The winter branch pattern and bark color are as much an asset as spring's flower color.

Ec97-277 Minerals And Vitamins For Beef Cows, Richard J. Rasby, Dennis R. Brink, Ivan G. Rush, Don C. Adams

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Introduction

Mineral supplementation programs range from elaborate, cafeteria-style delivery systems to simple white salt blocks put out periodically by producers. The reason for this diversity: little applicable research available for producers to evaluate mineral supplement programs. There is a need of information regarding mineral composition and availability from various feedstuffs (i.e. pasture grasses, hays, by-products, etc.) and the possible interactions between minerals in the digestive system. Also lacking is a data base to establish accurate estimates of mineral requirements for beef cattle.

Assessing the consequence of mineral deficiencies in the cow, calf or stocker animal is difficult because slightly lowered …

Psychological Distress And Help Seeking In Rural America, Dan R. Hoyt, Rand D. Conger, Jill Gaffney Valde, Karen Weihs

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The implications of exposure to acute and chronic stressors, and seeking mental health care, for increased psychological distress are examined. Research on eco¬nomic stress, psychological distress, and rural agrarian values each point to in¬creasing variability within rural areas. Using data from a panel study of 1,487 adults, a model predicting changes in depressive symptoms was specified and tested. Results show effects by size of place for men but not for women. Men living in rural villages of under 2,500 or in small towns of 2,500 to 9,999 people had significantly greater increases in depressive symptoms than men living in the …

Cheyenne Autumn, By Mari Sandoz, Michael R. Hill Jan 1997

Cheyenne Autumn, By Mari Sandoz, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Cheyenne Autumn is an unflinching historical portrait of a people confronting physical extermination and cultural annihilation at the hands of duplicitous government forces. This work is structurally a chapter-by-chapter chronicle of a Cheyenne outbreak starting in Oklahoma and ending in the surrender of Little Wolf and his followers hundreds of miles and six months later in Montana. The northern Cheyennes of the Yellowstone region are promised land, food, and protection in treaties signed by the U.S. Government. These agreements, however, are repeatedly and brutally broken by the government.

Hundreds of northern Cheyennes agree, under government coercion, to removal to Oklahoma …

Parts II and III provide a general overview of the bankruptcy process and the Fifth Amendment, respectively. Part IV examines whether and to what extent the privilege against self-incrimination protects corporations and their directors, officers, and shareholders. Part V offers a similar examination of the extent to which the Fifth Amendment protects against the compelled production of documents. Parts VI and VII address the closely related topics of invocation and …

The Effects Of Aeration On Amphibian Larval Growth: An Experiment With Bullfrog Tadpoles, Geoffrey R. Smith Jan 1997

The Effects Of Aeration On Amphibian Larval Growth: An Experiment With Bullfrog Tadpoles, Geoffrey R. Smith

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

I conducted an experiment to assess the effects of aeration on the growth of bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana). Tadpoles in the non-aerated treatment grew slower than tadpoles in the aerated treatment. Tadpoles in the nonaerated treatment were observed at the water's surface more often and on food resources less often than tadpoles in the aerated treatment. Oxygen concentrations in natural aquatic habitats varied greatly (encompassing the range of the experimental treatments), suggesting the results of this study may be applicable to natural situations. The results suggest oxygen content (and/or disturbance) of aquatic habitats may influence the distribution and …

Comparison Of Three Formulations Of Alphachloralose For Immobilization Of Canada Geese, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The effectiveness of an alpha-chloralose (AC)-corn oil suspension, an AC-margarine mixture, and AC tablets were compared for immobilizing Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Responses to AC immobilization also were compared in male and female Canada geese. There was no difference in mean time to first effects or mean time to capture between male and female geese dosed with 30 mg/kg AC in orally-administered bread baits. Recovery times (≤24 hr) also were similar between sexes. Mean (±SE) time to first effects for geese immobilized with AC tablets in bread baits ( 19 ± 3 mm) was significantly less than mean …

Solid-Phase Extraction Method For The Quantitative Analysis Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wildlife Urine, E. E. Petty, J . J . Johnston, S.A. Volz

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A gas chromatographic method for the analysis of nine organochlorine pesticides in wildlife urine is described. Reversedphase solid-phase extraction is utilized to extract the organochlorine pesticides from urine. The pesticides are recovered by elution with hexane-ethyl ether (1:1) and quantified by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. Method detection limits range from 1.4 to 2.7 μg/L. Mean recoveries for all pesticides are 90.6%.
