Impact Of Eating Disorder Recovery On Communication Of Identity Through Food, Rosemary F. Jeter Feb 2023

Impact Of Eating Disorder Recovery On Communication Of Identity Through Food, Rosemary F. Jeter

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Despite remaining stigmatized and regarded as taboo, eating disorders (EDs) affect millions of people around the world. They are also one of the deadliest mental health disorders, with over thousands of suicides every year being tied to EDs. Recovery from eating disorders is possible; however, there is an ongoing debate about what successful or complete recovery looks like. Most extant research about eating disorder recovery (EDR) is through clinical and biomedical perspectives. However, our understanding of how EDR impacts an individual’s identity is still lacking.

When an individual experiences an illness or mental health disorder, such as an ED, they …

Parasitic Infection In A Social Carnivore: T. Gondii Exposure Increases Risky Decision Making In Gray Wolves, Connor J. Meyer, Kira A. Cassidy, Erin Stahler, Ellen Brandell, Colby B. Anton, Daniel Stahler, Douglas W. Smith Feb 2023

Parasitic Infection In A Social Carnivore: T. Gondii Exposure Increases Risky Decision Making In Gray Wolves, Connor J. Meyer, Kira A. Cassidy, Erin Stahler, Ellen Brandell, Colby B. Anton, Daniel Stahler, Douglas W. Smith

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite capable of infecting any warm-blooded species yet, requires a feline definitive host to sexually reproduce. Experimental studies indicate that T. gondii infection increases an individual’s risky decision-making but, due to the intensive data collection and large samples sizes necessary, T. gondii’s role in ecosystem processes is understudied.

We sought to understand the role in which T. gondii exposure affects gray wolf decision-making in Yellowstone National Park. To achieve this, we used 25 years of wolf serological and behavioral data to build generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to test for a change in behavior of …

Professional Dispositions Among Counselor Education Doctoral Students, Sabina R. Sabyrkulova Feb 2023

Professional Dispositions Among Counselor Education Doctoral Students, Sabina R. Sabyrkulova

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The instructional standards of Counselor Education and Supervision programs expect doctoral students to display professional behavior as they fulfill their five main roles in the program: counseling, supervision, teaching, research, and advocacy (CACREP, 2016). A professional disposition is important because of the close working relationships that doctoral students engage in with peers, students, and faculty. These relationships directly impact learning experiences and development of professional identities for doctoral candidates. Existing studies explore professional dispositions predominantly among master-level counseling students (Guardia, 2020; Brown, 2013) and counselor educators (Brown-Rice & Furr, 2019), but only one study involves doctoral students (Brown-Rice &Furr, 2019). …

Moonlighting And Wage Differentials: A Case Study Of The Public And Formal Private Sectors In Ghana, Matilda Kabutey-Ongor Feb 2023

Moonlighting And Wage Differentials: A Case Study Of The Public And Formal Private Sectors In Ghana, Matilda Kabutey-Ongor

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In comparison to private sector workers, workers in the public sector in Ghana are far more likely to supplement their incomes by taking on additional jobs, which is also known as moonlighting. Previous research on the moonlighting phenomenon in Ghana has focused on general motives for taking on a second job, but the workers’ decision to moonlight may differ across sectors. With an increasing wage gap between private and public sector wages in Ghana, the differentials in these sectors could have a significant impact on the individual’s decision to moonlight.

This paper examines the incidence and motivations for moonlighting with …

Interpersonal Protective Factors Of Suicide Ideation And Attempt Among Adolescents, Lillian Martz, Emily Sallee, Abraham Cazares-Cervantes Feb 2023

Interpersonal Protective Factors Of Suicide Ideation And Attempt Among Adolescents, Lillian Martz, Emily Sallee, Abraham Cazares-Cervantes

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The purpose of this research study is to contribute positively to the literature and research related to the growing epidemic of suicidality among adolescents in the United States. More than one in three high school students report experiencing persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness and one in six youth report making a suicide plan in the past year. Nearly 22% of Montana teens seriously considered suicide in the past year with a full 10.2% of teens making a suicide attempt. The researchers are interested in applying the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) to the adolescent population. ITPS posits that the …

Aspectual Markers In African American English(Es), Kevin Vrla Feb 2023

Aspectual Markers In African American English(Es), Kevin Vrla

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

African American English (Or AAE, a variant of Standard American English(SAE)) has several features that allow for a diverse array of temporal information to be encoded not found in SAE. Here I touch on two such methods, both regarding past events: Been and Done. Both been and done are employed by speakers to provide additional context and I posit that they appear in various constructions providing specific pragmatic information. My analysis has been grounded in previous investigations and supported by data collected colloquially.

Been is the word commonly used to indicate distant past events. When used in a verb …

An Rna Vaccine Protects Against Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus Infection In Mice, Shanna S. Leventhal, Kimberly Meade-White, Deepashri Rao, Elaine Haddock, Jesse Erasmus, David W. Hawman Feb 2023

An Rna Vaccine Protects Against Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus Infection In Mice, Shanna S. Leventhal, Kimberly Meade-White, Deepashri Rao, Elaine Haddock, Jesse Erasmus, David W. Hawman

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV) is commonly transmitted by ticks and has a wide geographic distribution, being endemic throughout southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Due to climate change, this range is even expanding northward. CCHFV causes a hemorrhagic disease characterized by initial non-specific illness (fever, muscle pains, nausea) followed by severe internal and external bleeding with a case fatality rate of 5-60%. As there is no licensed therapeutics or vaccines, there is great need for highly effective countermeasures. Recently, we have developed a self-replicating RNA-based vaccine which expresses two of the viral proteins: the CCHFV …

Toward A Contemporary Theory Of Figurative Realist Painting, Lily Kip Feb 2023

Toward A Contemporary Theory Of Figurative Realist Painting, Lily Kip

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

This research represents findings from an ongoing project analyzing the contemporary value of Figurative Realist Painting, i.e. the artistic depiction of the true-to-life human body. Despite its historical significance, I believe the art world lacks contemporary interest in Figurative Realist Painting due to three major phenomena. 1. The invention of photography in 1840 decreased the value of Realism in painting. 2. Abstract painting thus dominated American Art in the 20th century. 3. Contemporary art philosophies allow such wide definitions of Fine Art that traditional methods garner less critical interest.

On this basis, I suspected the continuing presence of Figurative Realist …

Beaver Dam Analogs Change Macroinvertebrate Communities In Headwater Streams, Western Montana, Michelle E. Fillion Feb 2023

Beaver Dam Analogs Change Macroinvertebrate Communities In Headwater Streams, Western Montana, Michelle E. Fillion

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Starting in the 17th century, beavers were nearly eradicated from their historic range. Though today their populations are improving, the lack of beaver dams in aquatic systems has left a lasting impact on the environment. As a result, managers of freshwater systems have turned to beaver dam analogs (BDAs) as one technique for stream restoration. BDAs are human constructed structures designed to mimic natural beaver dams and their geomorphic, hydrologic, and ecological effects. Though BDAs have proven to be a useful restoration technique, there has been little research on how they influence macroinvertebrate communities, which serve as a vital …

Seeding Resilience: An Examination Of The Impacts Of A Seed Saving Network In Western Montana, Christina Leas Feb 2023

Seeding Resilience: An Examination Of The Impacts Of A Seed Saving Network In Western Montana, Christina Leas

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Informal seed saving continues even in the context of an increasingly industrialized and globalized agricultural system. While some scholarship has focused on informal seed saving practices that continue to thrive in the global South, few studies have examined the dynamics of these practices in the global North, particularly in the American West. This thesis utilizes a resilience framework to assess a seed saving network and its impacts in western Montana, specifically the Bitterroot and Missoula Valleys. Two questions guide the inquiry: 1) How do significant actors connect within the seed saving network of the Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys, and 2) …

Unlocking Montana: A Solution To Corner-Locked Public Land, Sawyer J. Connelly Feb 2023

Unlocking Montana: A Solution To Corner-Locked Public Land, Sawyer J. Connelly

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Across the American West, 9.52 million acres of federal and state public lands are inaccessible to the public. The legality of accessing much of those public lands through corner-crossing is unclear in the law because, in the infinitesimal space where four corners of land meet in a checkerboard pattern, there is ambiguity; neither private landowners nor the public can assert an exclusive right or absolute control without infringing upon the rights of the other. This paper discusses the origins of landlocked public land, common law doctrines that inform legal actors in this space, and analyzes federal statute and state legislative …

Solenex, Llc V. Haaland, Jennifer Kieffer Jensen Feb 2023

Solenex, Llc V. Haaland, Jennifer Kieffer Jensen

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In 1982, BLM issued an oil and gas lease in the Badger-Two Medicine to Solenex’s predecessor. The Badger-Two Medicine, located in the Lewis and Clark National Forest, is an area of cultural and spiritual importance to the Blackfeet Tribe. After four decades of disagreement as to whether the lease was validly issued, the Secretary of the Interior found that the lease violated the National Historic Preservation Act. Accordingly, she canceled Solenex’s lease and revoked Solenex’s Application for Permit to Drill. The District Court for the District of Columbia held the Secretary did not possess the authority to cancel Solenex’s lease. …

Impacts Of Protected Areas On Respiratory Health In The Brazilian Amazon, Katrina Mullan Feb 2023

Impacts Of Protected Areas On Respiratory Health In The Brazilian Amazon, Katrina Mullan

University Grant Program Reports

There is growing interest in the connection between the conservation of ecosystems and human health. Protection of ecosystems is often presented by opponents to be in direct conflict with human values, on the grounds that it restricts economic opportunities. At the same time, human health is a universal value that cuts across political, economic, and social divisions. To date, the empirical evidence for the extent to which conservation or land-use policy can generate health improvements is minimal. This project contributed by focusing on one large-scale policy, Brazil’s Amazon biome Protected Area (PA) network. It provided funds for processing and analysis …
