Mother Courage 2021: Making Art In The Age Of Coronavirus, Shane Bridger Lutz
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
The force of the coronavirus pandemic found American theatres and artistic venues shuttered and closed - indefinitely - for business. The need to limit social contact implored the performance community to cease all activities that could bring virus exposure to the cast, the crew, and the audiences they serve. However, like a bird must sing to be a bird, artists must make art. The standards for theatre have radically changed in the months since the pandemic started, and not only do rehearsals require a fresh set of safety protocols, but the entire artistic process must be examined in order to …

Calf Boss Ribs V. Blackfeet Tribal Court, 20-Ap-03 (Blkft. Tr. Ct. App., Feb. 16, 2021), Blackfeet Appellate Court
Court Decisions
In the Blackfeet Tribal Court of Appeals, the Court dismissed a motion for reconsideration of a lower court decision when new evidence was discovered by the appellant. The Court noted that the evidence must be presented to the lower court. The Appellate Court of the Blackfeet Nation will not overturn the Tribal Court’s judgement based upon factual findings unless a review of the entire record shows that such judgement was not supported by substantial evidence. Motion for reconsideration is dismissed. The case was remanded to the lower court for a new hearing and the Court advised the lower court to …

Increasing Inclusion Through Audio Described Exhibits: A Case Study, Camryn Vaughn, Erin Baucom, Teressa M. Keenan
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
Adding audio and/or touch components to library exhibits has been reported to improve accessibility. Audio description replaces important visual content with equivalent spoken information. While initially implemented to assist people who are blind or have low vision, audio description is beneficial for a broader audience. The concise and objective translation of visual content promotes new ways of learning, helps individuals with language development and strengthens writing skills. This case study describes an audio description pilot project and the authors’ successful exploration into developing a cost-effective method of adding an audio description component to library displays and exhibits.

Background: The serine/threonine protein phosphatase, PP2A, is thought to play a central role in the molecular pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and the activity and substrate specificity of PP2A is regulated, in part, through methylation and demethylation of its catalytic subunit. Previously, we found that transgenic overexpression of the PP2A methyltransferase, LCMT-1, or the PP2A methylesterase, PME-1, altered the sensitivity of mice to impairments caused by acute exposure to synthetic oligomeric amyloid-β (Aβ).
Objective: Here we sought to test the possibility that these molecules also controlled sensitivity to impairments caused by chronically elevated levels of Aβ produced in vivo. …

Cellular oxidants are primarily managed by the thioredoxin reductase-1 (TrxR1)- and glutathione reductase (Gsr)-driven antioxidant systems. In mice having hepatocyte-specific codisruption of TrxR1 and Gsr (TrxR1/Gsr-null livers), methionine catabolism sustains hepatic levels of reduced glutathione (GSH). Although most mice with TrxR1/Gsr-null livers exhibit long-term survival, ~25% die from spontaneous liver failure between 4- and 7-weeks of age. Here we tested whether liver failure was ameliorated by ascorbate supplementation. Following ascorbate, dehydroascorbate, or mock treatment, we assessed survival, liver histology, or hepatic redox markers including GSH and GSSG, redox enzyme activities, and oxidative damage markers. Unexpectedly, rather than providing protection, ascorbate …

Background: Microbial evolution experiments can be used to study the tempo and dynamics of evolutionary change in asexual populations, founded from single clones and growing into large populations with multiple clonal lineages. High-throughput sequencing can be used to catalog de novo mutations as potential targets of selection, determine in which lineages they arise, and track the fates of those lineages. Here, we describe a long-term experimental evolution study to identify targets of selection and to determine when, where, and how often those targets are hit. Results: We experimentally evolved replicate Escherichia coli populations that originated from a mutator/nonsense suppressor ancestor …

Independent Living and Community Participation
In these times of stay-at-home orders, physical distancing, and remote teaching and learning, we need to nurture ourselves. In this issue of Montana Voices Amplified, members of the Rural Institute Consumer Advisory Council share the strategies they use to reinvigorate and replenish themselves. Maybe you can use these strategies to “fill your cup” too!

Independent Living and Community Participation
How can families address all the needs of their special needs child(ren) and typically developing child(ren)? As human beings and as parents, it is physically, emotionally, and logistically impossible to meet every need of each member of your family. But, here are some suggestions.
