The UGP small grant I received in Spring 2024 made it possible for me to make an extended research trip to Oxford, England in Spring 2025, while I was on sabbatical. While at Oxford, I held two appointed fellowships (non-stipendiary) at St Anne’s College and the Rothermere American Institute, where I undertook research for two projects.

The Chemical Calculator combines invisible ink with a sophisticated math trick. The audience is poled for digits to use in either a 2-digit or 3-digit set of calculations. Once the digits have been obtained, a difference is calculated between the original set of digits and the same digits in reverse order. That answer is added to a reversed version of itself. The chemical calculator is a solution in a spray bottle. When the spray bottle has had a chance to examine the problem, it contents are sprayed at the bottom of the sheet. The correct answer appears. This report details the wetland and riparian mapping methodologies implemented for the Wetland 38 Utah East and CO project. The project area consists of 167 1:24,000 US Geological Survey (USGS) quads across Western Colorado, with quads across Larimer, Gunnison, Eagle, La Plata, Pitkin, Garfield, Montezuma, Rio Blanco, Mesa, Saguache, Dolores, Rio Grande, Pueblo, Grand, Moffat, Teller, Hinsdale, Jackson, Montrose, Routt, and Huerfano counties. There are also quads across three Wyoming counties (Sweetwater, Albany, and Uinta) and 8 Utah counties (Duchesne, Daggett, Grand, Carbon, Uintah, Emery, San Juan, and Utah).

Montana faces a severe justice gap: nearly half of low-income residents have unmet civil legal needs, and rural counties lack attorneys. High costs, distance, and cultural barriers make traditional solutions ineffective. The Montana Legal Services Association proposes a Certified Lay Advocate Program to training community-based advocates to provide free, specialized legal help under supervision of a lawyer. This model, which has proven successful in Alaska and other states, is evidence-backed, expands access to the law, reduces costs, and delivers culturally competent assistance for critical issues like domestic violence and housing.

How can we visualize the convergence of rational approximations to any real number? We will use continued fractions, the iterative process that generates rational approximations, and the Stern-Brocot Diagram, which defines the unique structure and relationship between rationals in lowest terms. A Farey Recursive Function (F) is defined on the points of the Stern-Brocot Diagram, where the F-values of points lying on any line in the diagram satisfy a 2-term linear recurrence relation. For example, the Fibonacci sequence on the nonnegative integers can be extended across all rational numbers by a Farey Recursive Function.
