Making “Habitat Quality” Meaningful: Quantifying Demographic Effects Of Habitat In Two Sympatric Species, Anna Katherine Moeller Jan 2022

Making “Habitat Quality” Meaningful: Quantifying Demographic Effects Of Habitat In Two Sympatric Species, Anna Katherine Moeller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Habitat quality may be an underlying factor driving or exacerbating mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population declines across their range and concurrent white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population increases. A clearer understanding of how the two species respond to habitat variables is needed to disentangle the drivers of mule deer decline and identify opportunities to change population trajectories through habitat management. Capitalizing on extensive monitoring data for sympatric populations of mule deer and white-tailed deer, this dissertation improves understanding of habitat quality by exploring and developing modeling approaches that connect habitat and demographics in these two species.

Using a resource selection function …

Evaluating The Effects Of Tree Community Species Composition On Larix Occidentalis Growth, Christian M. Mercado Jan 2022

Evaluating The Effects Of Tree Community Species Composition On Larix Occidentalis Growth, Christian M. Mercado

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Western larch (Larix occidentalis) is an important tree species exclusive to the inland northwest region of North America. It is very intolerant of shade but managed across a range of communities with both shade-tolerant and -intolerant species. Recent works have shown that tree and stand level competition in mixed-species communities can be modified depending on how the characteristics of species in a mixture interact. Such changes can alter the growth relationship of the participant species. Western larch growth has been well-characterized in empirical growth models, where growth is typically estimated from a complex of size, competition, density, and …

Emission And Chemistry Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Western U.S. Wildifre Smoke, Wade Jeremy Permar Jan 2022

Emission And Chemistry Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Western U.S. Wildifre Smoke, Wade Jeremy Permar

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wildfires are a significant source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the western U.S., emitting hundreds to thousands of different species that play key roles in tropospheric oxidation, ozone production, and secondary organic aerosol formation. Many of these VOCs have only recently been identified and quantified in laboratory burning experiments. Consequently, little is known about their emissions from wildfires, which species are most important for plume OH oxidation chemistry, and how they evolve as smoke plumes age. This dissertation aims to improve our understanding of the emissions and chemistry of VOCs in wildfire smoke using detailed in situ measurements made …

Genetic Monitoring And Rescue In Mid-Atlantic Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Poulations, Zachary Lorn Robinson Jan 2022

Genetic Monitoring And Rescue In Mid-Atlantic Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Poulations, Zachary Lorn Robinson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) populations have experienced dramatic declines throughout their native range, in part, due to anthropogenic land use and habitat fragmentation. In the mid-Atlantic region, brook trout populations often occupy small, headwater habitat fragments in demographic and genetic isolation, making them vulnerable to inbreeding and genetic drift. My dissertation evaluates different methods for genetic assessment, monitoring, and management of small, isolated brook trout populations. First, I examined the potential value of effective number of breeders (Nb) estimates for genetic monitoring by determining whether Nb estimates were sensitive to habitat characteristics known to affect …

Bacteriophage Infection Induces Intracellular Polyamine Accumulation As A Defense Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Camilia Dornelles De Mattos Jan 2022

Bacteriophage Infection Induces Intracellular Polyamine Accumulation As A Defense Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Camilia Dornelles De Mattos

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Cells are constantly monitoring their extracellular environment for danger signals that warn of imminent threats. When cells are killed by physical or other non-infectious injuries, they release concentrated intracellular molecules into the surrounding area. These danger-associated molecules alert other cells that danger is nearby. When cells are killed by pathogens, they release both damage-associated and pathogen-associated signals. Both eukaryotic and bacterial cells sense these molecules and make threat assessments of cellular injury. Here, I show that lysis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other bacterial species releases high concentrations of polyamines that are in turn taken up by surviving cells in a …

Pre-Service To In-Service: An Interpretive Study Of Emergent Multilingual-Focused Field Placements And New Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Anya Michelle Muggli Jan 2022

Pre-Service To In-Service: An Interpretive Study Of Emergent Multilingual-Focused Field Placements And New Teachers’ Beliefs And Practices, Anya Michelle Muggli

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, over 4.9 million public school students in the United States are emergent multilingual students (also referred to as English language learners or ELLs), and by 2025, it is estimated that one in four U.S. students will be an emergent multilingual student (NCES, 2019). Research on preparing mainstream teachers to effectively work with linguistically and culturally diverse student groups has shown the promise of preservice field experiences with emerging multilingual students; however, little is known about how these experiences impact teachers’ work, especially their practices, particularly in the long term. This interpretive study …

Ghosts, Hauntings, Kinship, And Contamination: Key Tropes For Narrating Extinction In Jeff Vandermeer's Hummingbird Salamander And James Bradley's Ghost Species, Christopher Hardesty Nicholson Jan 2022

Ghosts, Hauntings, Kinship, And Contamination: Key Tropes For Narrating Extinction In Jeff Vandermeer's Hummingbird Salamander And James Bradley's Ghost Species, Christopher Hardesty Nicholson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis examines the narrative portrayals of issues pertaining to anthropogenic extinction in two contemporary speculative fiction novels: Jeff VanderMeer’s Hummingbird Salamander (2021) and James Bradley’s Ghost Species (2020). This focus leads to consideration of narrative genre, tropes, and affective resonance. The first half of this thesis centers the genres of tragedy and elegy, their tropes of ghosts and hauntings, and the affective processes of grief and horror. Within these narrative frameworks extinction is experienced as a claustrophobic site of horror in Hummingbird Salamander, and as a time-warping inspiration of grief in Ghost Species. However, in each novel …

The Changing, Sabrina B. Black Jan 2022

The Changing, Sabrina B. Black

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In poems that center on experiences of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, The Changing explores the formation of identity and the malleability of the self. Sabrina Black writes into the spaces between people—at times finding connection there and at times isolation. Throughout the collection, the speaker reflects on complicated relationships with family members, classmates, and friends; on the ways those relationships have shaped her; and, most of all, on her relationship with that elusive thing called the self.

In a series of “Dear Advice Columnist” poems scattered throughout the manuscript, Black shifts focus away from personal experience, adopting the persona …

Sunbaby, Katelyn Eva Garcia Jan 2022

Sunbaby, Katelyn Eva Garcia

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Above all else, Sunbaby is a project concerned with that which is passed down from a mother to her daughters. Less interested in writing into the center of violent acts, this series of poems aims instead to consider all the things – both physical and psychological – that exist of the edges of violence. What happens to a body in the wake of violent acts? What informs the trauma of families? These are questions Sunbaby asks its reader to grapple with.

Set to background of the desert and mountain West, Sunbaby lingers on bodies (human and other) subjected to environmental …

Sexual Whatever, Madeline Rose Tecmire Jan 2022

Sexual Whatever, Madeline Rose Tecmire

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A rerouting of gendered power, Sexual Whatever unleashes femininity repressed in America’s nuclear families. This collection of narrative poetry puts pressure on patriarchal traditions of Christianity through persona, Madonna—a radical culmination of the Madonna-Whore Complex—resisting systemic domination of female sexuality in both public and private spaces. While Madonna dismantles the patriarchy, she investigates the mechanisms of domestic violence, emotional manipulation, the very value of a proper Christian woman.

This book dares to demean female characters through love, sex, and family, while still giving voice to abusers, creating webs of confusion around the many definitions of domestic violence. More characters question …

Prologue /The Lake Within

I am a fisherman. Every time I raise my arm to cast, I’m searching for an answer.

What is a lake?

I throw my lure at the lilies of my childhood, the sunken log of my crib. With every cast I hope the truth will follow it back, this little piece of me I offer to the mystery.

My earliest memories are at the bus stop, where a shroud of mist swirled about me and I listed side-to-side, six-AM eyes drooping while I waited for that big yellow ship to bust through the fog and …

In an effort to both analyze how COVID-19 has impacted traditionally isolated communities and prevent loneliness, we have created a pen-pal program between UM students and senior adults. We have implemented a pilot pen-pal program to create lasting social bonds without exposing seniors to COVID-19. The program is currently running through the Davidson Honors College “Intro to Honors” course, with plans to leave the program self-sustaining in future semesters. To pair partners, we distributed interest surveys and matched relevant interests. To inform people of how loneliness affects seniors, we created a brochure that highlights our research, with plans to distribute …

A Comparison Of Predicted And Observed Ocean Tidal Loading Displacements Around The Puget Sound, Tanessa Caitlyn Morris

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Around coastlines and in shallow oceans, models of ocean tidal loading (OTL) are not highly accurate and can create sources of error in OTL analysis. OTL is tides moving ocean water that cause the surface of Earth to deform. In this study, forward-modelled predictions of OTL are compared to observations from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data to explore the elastic deformation response of Earth to OTL around the Puget Sound. Data from 75 stations were processed to yield position estimates at intervals of 5 minutes for a year. The OTL model used for comparison was the FES2014b ocean-tide model …

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Our understanding of the science of anthropogenic climate change and its immediate and indirect impacts has grown within the last decade.Alongside anincrease in concern for the inequities within the industrialized food system, climate change is impacting agriculture and the communities that depend on it in myriad ways. These challenges have catalyzed investment in sustainable agriculture, “eat local” food movements, and rethinking of all aspects of food systems, including consumers, producers, retailers, and distributors. The body of literature on food systems primarily focuses on the connection between consumers and retailers; however, there is a notable absence of literature on the relationships …

Arctic Greening: Characterizing Tundra Vegetation From In-Situ And Remotely Sensed Observations, Shira Ann Ellenson Jan 2022

Arctic Greening: Characterizing Tundra Vegetation From In-Situ And Remotely Sensed Observations, Shira Ann Ellenson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As the Arctic has warmed at twice the rate of the global average, vegetation productivity has also been increasing. While satellite remote sensing is useful for summarizing Arctic-wide trends, changes in tundra species heights, densities, composition, and distribution can be missed at coarse resolution. Smaller, plot-scale studies are necessary to better understand vegetation dynamics at fine scales occurring on the ground.

In 1995, high-resolution traditional aerial photographs and in-situ measurements of vegetation characteristics were taken at a series of plots established on the Alaskan North Slope. Repeat field surveys in 2021 revealed increases in plant cover for deciduous shrubs and …

Getting To Know You: Relationship Formation Across Development In Octodon Degus, Amber Lynn Thatcher Jan 2022

Getting To Know You: Relationship Formation Across Development In Octodon Degus, Amber Lynn Thatcher

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Social relationships are a necessary part of group formation and cohesion across many animal species and can increase the health and fitness of the individuals involved. These benefits are seen across the lifespan, although the exact advantages and functions differ across developmental stages. Our current understanding of how relationships are formed and maintained is incomplete. Previous findings suggest that a measure of stability may be a useful method for understanding how relationships are formed and how this process may differ across development. The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the variability of social interactions over time and how it …
