Big Events, Little Change: Extreme Climatic Events Have No Region-Wide Effect On Great Barrier Reef Governance, Amber Datta, Michele L. Barnes, Brian C. Chaffin, Theresa M. Floyd, Tiffany Morrison, Sarah Sutcliffe
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
Extreme climatic events trigger changes in ecosystems with potential negative impacts for people. These events may provide an opportunity for environmental managers and decision-makers to improve the governance of social-ecological systems, however there is conflicting evidence regarding whether these actors are indeed able to change governance after extreme climatic events. In addition, the majority of research to date has focused on changes in specific policies or organizations after crises. A broader investigation of governance actors’ activities is needed to more fully understand whether or not crises trigger change. Here we demonstrate the use of a social network analysis of management …
The Decolonial Stance In Mathematics Education: Pointing Out Actions For The Construction Of A Political Agenda, Filipe Santos Fernandes, Victor Giraldo, Diego Matos
The Decolonial Stance In Mathematics Education: Pointing Out Actions For The Construction Of A Political Agenda, Filipe Santos Fernandes, Victor Giraldo, Diego Matos
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this article, we present a decolonial stance in Mathematics Education, which is not understood as a qualification attributed to particular actions or practices as opposed to others, nor as a tendency that theoretically or methodologically constrains research production, but as a political and epistemic position of permanent transgression and insurgency concerning the patterns of world power established by the myth of Western modernity. From this understanding and towards a political agenda in Mathematics Education, we propose, with no pretensions of totality, a set of situated actions: in Mathematics, in its ontological, epistemological and methodological perspectives, problematizing the naturalization of …

Mathematic E-Textbooks In Different Didactic Configurations, José Wilson Pereira, Verônica Gitirana
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The e-textbook is one of the main resources that distance learning institutions make available in the virtual learning environment (VLE) for teachers and students. According to the Brazilian References for Distance Learning, the authors should follow some methodological, epistemological and political principles for its production: to allow students and teachers (educator and tutor) to construct knowledge through interaction with peers. In this paper we seek to map the enrichment of the content in DE carried out by teachers’ educator, from the use of e-textbook, in the light of the analysis of the teacher’s instrumental orchestrations. The theoretical framework comprised Luc …

Moving Parallel And Transversal Lines With Touches On Smartphones: A Look Through Screenrecording, Marcelo Almeida Bairral, Marcos Paulo Henrique, Alexandre Assis
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This article illustrates how videos generated through capturing touches on screens (screenrecording) can assist in analyses related to manipulation and reasoning by primary education learners in solving geometry tasks. We are presenting two protocols as ways to elucidate the use of application AZ Screen Recorder in learning about parallel lines intersected by a transversal line. In the first protocol, the interactions and the ways adopted by the subjects when analyzing the relation between corresponding angles are highlighted. In the second protocol, the relevant aspects are related to the particularities of the atmosphere of dynamic geometry used and the strategies adopted …

Didactic Engineering (De) And Professional Didactics (Pd): A Proposal For Historical Eesearch In Brazil On Recurring Number Sequences, Francisco Regis Vieira Alves
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The present work presents some examples of data originated from a set of investigations developed in Brazil, at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of the State of Ceará - IFCE, in the context of teacher education, and the consideration of elements of a historical, mathematical, and evolutionary nature. Thus, from a perspective of theoretical complementarity involving the research elements derived from the notion of the didactic engineering for development and some assumptions of the French aspect of the professional didactics, two sets of data are discussed. The first set involved research carried out between 2017 and 2020. …
It Is Necessary To Know A Specific Mathematics To Teach Mathematics, Jaqueline De Souza Pereira Grilo, Jonei Cerqueira Barbosa
It Is Necessary To Know A Specific Mathematics To Teach Mathematics, Jaqueline De Souza Pereira Grilo, Jonei Cerqueira Barbosa
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this theoretical essay we problematize the statement “To teach mathematics one must know a specific mathematics for teaching” of the discourse of specific mathematical knowledge to teach. The study was inspired by Foucaultian concepts and the analysis focused on studies in the area of Mathematical Education that mobilize discourses regarding Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching, Mathematics Teacher’s Specialized Knowledge and Mathematics for Teaching. The analysis showed that the discourses operate under two truth regimes about the mathematical knowledge needed to teach. Analyzing the enunciative intertwining, we observe an approximation with: i) the educational discourse, which deals with the inseparability between …

Ludwig Wittgenstein, Mathematics, Therapy And Life: Research From The Group On Education, Language And Cultural Practices In Brazil, Elizabeth Gomes Souza, Carolina Tamayo, Marcia Maria Bento
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This article aims to describe discursive regularities of theses and dissertations by researchers from the Group “Research, Education, Language, Cultural Practices” - Phala and their effects for / on Mathematics Education. Due to the nature of the proposed study, three axes of description emerged: (1) starting cultural archive and the literatures-traces triggered with respect to Mathematics; (2) therapeutic analog movements operated in research, and (3) aesthetics and writing style. We identified that the archives, taking deconstructionist therapy as a research lens, expand the debates about the understanding of Mathematics as a fixed, linear, compartmentalized, abstract and hierarchical set of knowledge, …
A Reynolds Number Based Sampling Technique For 3-D Vector Fields In Computational Fluid Dynamic Environments, Trent James Schweitzer
A Reynolds Number Based Sampling Technique For 3-D Vector Fields In Computational Fluid Dynamic Environments, Trent James Schweitzer
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Effective visualization of unsteady, time-dependent vector fields in a virtual environment is not a trivial task. This is due to the fact that most visualization techniques require the user to have a prior understanding of how the vector field will behave to set the parameters used to create the visualization. In this thesis we will take air flow data from a computational fluid dynamic simulations to calculate the amount of turbulence (represented as Reynolds numbers) to identify regions of interest. We then calculate wind pathlines that will intersect with these points sampled from these regions. We address the issue of …
