Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Lung Disease, Yoon Hee Cho
Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Lung Disease, Yoon Hee Cho
University Grant Program Reports
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are engineered nano-materials being developed and used in a wide variety of medical, engineering, and personal products with many potential benefits [1]. However, MWCNT have been shown to cause significant pathological changes in animal models, particularly in the airways, raising the concern that adverse human health effects will emerge with increasing use and exposure to these materials [2-4]. Potential bioactivity of MWCNT, including in vitro and in vivo toxicity and increased inflammation and pathology, has been attributed to their unique physical and chemical characteristics such as length, diameter, contaminants and rigidity [5]. However, MWNCT toxicity and/or …

Providing Patient-Centered Enhanced Discharge Planning And Rural Transition Support: Building A Rural Transitions Network Between Regional Referral And Critical Access Hospitals, Tom Seekins, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Health and Wellness
Residents of rural and frontier counties experience significant disparities in healthcare access and outcomes when compared to their urban counterparts. The organization of health care delivery contributes significantly to these disparities. Simply put, rural residents can face many challenges when they have to go to a hospital in a distant city for treatment and then return home to recover. The transition back home is also problematic because discharge planning generally does not adequately account for limited access to care in rural areas. The specific aim of this research project was to ascertain rural patients’ actual experience of the discharge planning …

Satellite derived vegetation indices (VIs) are broadly used in ecological research, ecosystem modeling, and land surface monitoring. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), perhaps the most utilized VI, has countless applications across ecology, forestry, agriculture, wildlife, biodiversity, and other disciplines. Calculating satellite derived NDVI is not always straight-forward, however, as satellite remote sensing datasets are inherently noisy due to cloud and atmospheric contamination, data processing failures, and instrument malfunction. Readily available NDVI products that account for these complexities are generally at coarse resolution; high resolution NDVI datasets are not conveniently accessible and developing them often presents numerous technical and methodological …

Satellite Observations Of Regional Drought Severity In The Continental United States Using Grace-Based Terrestrial Water Storage Changes, Meng Zhao, A. Geruo, I. Velicogna, John S. Kimball
Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications
Drought monitoring is important for characterizing the timing, extent, and severity of drought for effective mitigation and water management. Presented here is a novel satellite-based drought severity index (DSI) for regional monitoring derived using time-variable terrestrial water storage changes from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). The GRACE-DSI enables drought feature comparison across regions and periods, it is unaffected by uncertainties associated with soil water balance models and meteorological forcing data, and it incorporates water storage changes from human impacts including groundwater withdrawals thatmodify land surface processes and impact water management. Here, the underlying algorithm is described, and the …

Age Defining Life Stage Traveling: Montana Nonresident Travel Groups, Kara Grau, Norma P. Nickerson
Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
In this analysis of the 2015 full year nonresident data set, respondents were segmented by age, or life stage, according to the age groups represented within the groups. These discrete groups were then analyzed so that differences and similarities among travel groups of differing life stages could be observed.

The Effect Of Visual Social Stimuli On Octodon Degus, Danielle Crandell
The Effect Of Visual Social Stimuli On Octodon Degus, Danielle Crandell
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Most vertebrates have evolved to recognize potential predators, prey, and social partners, but very little is known about how the brain detects and responds to such agents. One difficulty is experimentally controlling for cues that might signal agency, particularly in experimental models such as mice, which depend heavily on olfaction. We sought to test whether a more visual rodent, the diurnal, Chilean degu, would be differentially attracted or averse to social compared with non-social visual stimuli. Degus were placed in a chamber containing four, 3D printed objects made from white polylactic acid (PLA). Two objects were shaped as quadruped animals, …
Integrating Cellular Percolation Fire Spread Into An Existing Landscape Model, Michael D. Kinsey
Integrating Cellular Percolation Fire Spread Into An Existing Landscape Model, Michael D. Kinsey
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The U.S. Forest Service uses the Simulating Patterns and Processes at Landscape Scales (SIMPPLLE) application to simulate landscape ecological processes and evaluate treatment options on National Forests in Montana, Northern Idaho, and the Dakotas. Wildfires are an influential process on the landscape; therefore, the model must accurately simulate ecological processes over long time periods. OpenSIMPPLLE, an open-source version of SIMPPLLE, contains an algorithm that spreads fire in all directions, regardless of wind and elevation, resulting in rectangular fires, which does not reflect realistic fire behavior. We integrated a more accurate cellular percolation spread algorithm developed by Keane et al. (2006) …

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
For the last 500,000 years, the world climate has been in transition from warm to cold and vice versa. However, recent human-caused climate change has increased the rate of change in extreme and average climate conditions. Globally, people are facing higher than average temperatures as well as accelerated rates of drought and flooding. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC,) natural systems around the globe are being affected by regional climate change, mainly temperature increases. They IPCC found that 20-30% of plant and animal species are likely to be at increased risk of extinction if global average temperatures …
Descriptive Analysis Of Injuries Sustained By Wildland Firefighters, Taylor Purchio, Valerie Moody, Charles Palmer, Steven Gaskill

DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF INJURIES SUSTAINED BY WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS
Purchio TJ, Moody VJ, Palmer, CG, Gaskill, SE: The University of Montana
Context: Due to an incredibly dynamic work environment, Wildland Firefighters (WLFFs) find themselves at an increased risk for injury while on the job. In order to decrease the risk of injury amongst WLFFs, a thorough evaluation of equipment, terrain, work shifts, environmental factors, and mechanism of injury is necessary to address the most prominent threats to WLFF safety during physical training and on the fire line. Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop a better understanding of the …
