Analysis Of Motility In Multicellular Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Evolved Under Predation, Margrethe Boyd, Frank Rosenzweig, Matthew D. Herron Jan 2018

Analysis Of Motility In Multicellular Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Evolved Under Predation, Margrethe Boyd, Frank Rosenzweig, Matthew D. Herron

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The advent of multicellularity was a watershed event in the history of life, yet the transition from unicellularity to multicellularity is not well understood. Multicellularity opens up opportunities for innovations in intercellular communication, cooperation, and specialization, which can provide selective advantages under certain ecological conditions. The unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has never had a multicellular ancestor yet it is closely related to the volvocine algae, a clade containing taxa that range from simple unicells to large, specialized multicellular colonies. Simple multicellular structures have been observed to evolve in C. reinhardtii in response to predation or to settling rate-based selection. Structures …

Bitterrooters For Planning, Inc. V. Montana Department Of Environmental Quality, Rebecca A. Newsom Jan 2018

Bitterrooters For Planning, Inc. V. Montana Department Of Environmental Quality, Rebecca A. Newsom

Public Land & Resources Law Review

In Bitterrooters for Planning, Inc. v. Montana Department of Environmental Quality, the Montana Supreme Court found that the Montana Department of Environmental Quality did not violate the Montana Environmental Policy Act when the department issued a wastewater discharge permit for a large retail merchandise store. This decision enforced a narrow interpretation of agency requirements under the Montana Department of Environmental Quality Act, focusing only on direct effects with a close causal connection to the agency action.

Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer Jan 2018

Building Strategic Alliances To Support Advocacy And Planning For Digital Preservation, Erin Baucom, Tammy Troup, Conor Cote, Sara Mannheimer

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

While the business benefits of digital asset management are well-documented, the benefits and importance of digital preservation are not. Digital preservation is a sustained commitment to maintenance activities which require a system of plans, policies, and implementation workflows. Coordination across departments is helpful for digital asset management, but it is mandatory for digital preservation. The Montana Digital Preservation Working Group (DPWG) operated under a five-point plan for collaboration between organizations. The plan consisted of cultivating shared knowledge, assessing the current digital preservation landscape at each institution, advocating for the value of digital preservation, implementing digital preservation practices, and sustaining the …

Energy Colonialism Powers The Ongoing Unnatural Disaster In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onis Jan 2018

Energy Colonialism Powers The Ongoing Unnatural Disaster In Puerto Rico, Catalina M. De Onis

University of Montana Staff Publications

On September 20, 2017, Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico. Blasting the Caribbean archipelago with 155-mile/h winds, this, in many ways, unnatural disaster exposed the brutal consequences of energy colonialism and an extractivist economy, as well as ongoing and increasing advocacy for decentralized solar infrastructure by many local residents and other renewables supporters. This paper argues that acknowledging colonial power relations and their consequences is essential for studying the interplay of energy systems, environments, and actors. To support this claim, this essay outlines Puerto Rico’s history as a US colony by focusing on key policies and their implications; examines …

Characterizing Permafrost Active Layer Dynamics And Sensitivity To Landscape Spatial Heterogeneity In Alaska, Yonghong Yi, John S. Kimball, Richard Chen, Mahta Moghaddam, Rolf H. Reichle, Umakant Mishra, Donatella Zona, Walter C. Oechel Jan 2018

Characterizing Permafrost Active Layer Dynamics And Sensitivity To Landscape Spatial Heterogeneity In Alaska, Yonghong Yi, John S. Kimball, Richard Chen, Mahta Moghaddam, Rolf H. Reichle, Umakant Mishra, Donatella Zona, Walter C. Oechel

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

An important feature of the Arctic is large spatial heterogeneity in active layer conditions, which is generally poorly represented by global models and can lead to large uncertainties in predicting regional ecosystem responses and climate feedbacks. In this study, we developed a spatially integrated modeling and analysis framework combining field observations, local-scale ( ∼  50 m resolution) active layer thickness (ALT) and soil moisture maps derived from low-frequency (L + P-band) airborne radar measurements, and global satellite environmental observations to investigate the ALT sensitivity to recent climate trends and landscape heterogeneity in Alaska. Modeled ALT results show good correspondence with …

Mathematical Moments: Autoethnographic Excursions With A Mathematical Outsider Sociologist, Michael Corbett Jan 2018

Mathematical Moments: Autoethnographic Excursions With A Mathematical Outsider Sociologist, Michael Corbett

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this essay I offer some reflections on the field of mathematics education, and particularly the sociopolitical analysis of mathematics education that has emerged in contemporary scholarship. Here I attempt to do two things. First of all I respond to a recent book on “disorder” in mathematics education, identifying some themes and problematics that I find intriguing and generative from my perspective outside the field. Here I reflect on the way that mathematics is positioned in educational discourse generally as a proxy for human capital and general intelligence. Next I relate stories from my life and practice as a primary …

Mathematics Education And The Juggernaut Of Capitalism, Roberto Baldino, Tania Cabral Jan 2018

Mathematics Education And The Juggernaut Of Capitalism, Roberto Baldino, Tania Cabral

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article undertakes an ideological critique of mathematics education from a capitalist perspective. By replacing ‘society’ with ‘education’ and ‘the figure of the Jew’ with ‘mathematics’ in quotations from philosopher Slavoj Žižek, we characterize mathematics as the symptom of educational ideology. From such substitutions, we get statements like: Education does not exist and Mathematics is its symptom. In order to explore the kernel of truth in these statements, we introduce two concepts: identity-quilted-speech, to specify the so-called certainty of twentieth century mathematics (M20), and qualified-labor-power, to characterize the commodity that results from school production. Through the development of these concepts, …

Vernacular: A Montage Of Mathematical Graffiti, Quotations And Commentary, David Swanson

The Mathematics Enthusiast

I am keen to offer as little explanation as possible for the above work. I can say that it is intended to be a meditation on mathematics inside and outside school and a critique of a) mathematics, b) mathematics education, c) mathematics educational research, and, d) critiques of mathematics education and mathematics educational research. The work also critique’s itself and then critiques that critique (maybe). It is deliberately contradictory.

The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki Jan 2018

The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In the early 1960s, Ursula Le Guin wrote ‘The Masters’, a short novel that offers a sharp contrast to the ‘maths for all’ discourse of contemporary mathematics education reforms. Le Guin writes of a world – Edun – where ‘mathematical prohibition’ is law. Mathematical reason is banned for all people by the Priests of Edun, and failure to obey is punishable by death. Despite the threat of this totalitarian anti-math regime, some citizens create a collective heterotopia in which they practice mathematics in secret. Le Guin’s story is an opportunity to conduct a thought experiment: ‘what if maths became forbidden?’ …

“Statistics? Forget Those Old Ladies!!” Exploring The Nonsense Of Mathematics Education, Gustavo Bruno Jan 2018

“Statistics? Forget Those Old Ladies!!” Exploring The Nonsense Of Mathematics Education, Gustavo Bruno

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The objective of this chapter is to develop a reflection on mathematics education (ME) from a socio-political perspective, through the exploration of a parody of ME using episodes from a Mexican sitcom. Different vignettes from the sitcom, consisting of absurd, nonsensical dialogues and situations of a fictional mathematics classroom, will be described, analyzed and used as illustrations of socio-political issues previously explored in ME research (MER). These illustrations allow for a reflection on the public perception of ME as a social practice. Elements from Deleuze’s The Logic of Sense will be used to analyze the scenes. One of the conclusions …

The Mathematical Continuum: A Haunting Problematic, Liz De Freitas Jan 2018

The Mathematical Continuum: A Haunting Problematic, Liz De Freitas

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The mathematical continuum has a number of formulations and technical definitions. Two of these reference the geometric line and the real number system. This conceptual coupling of line and number has been an enduring source for mathematical invention and paradox. The continuum captures the monstrous desire of mathematics, a desire to re-assemble the point with the line, the discrete with the continuous, the finite with the infinite. This paper explores how the continuum is a source of fundamental ambiguity fueling our desires and fears about mathematics.

Towards An Alternative Approach To Modelling In School Mathematics, Uwe Schuermann Jan 2018

Towards An Alternative Approach To Modelling In School Mathematics, Uwe Schuermann

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article analyses the philosophical underpinnings of mathematical modelling with the focus on the modelling cycles in mainstream mathematics education. Due to its background of epistemological representation, the main focus is set on Kantian philosophy. I argue that representational thinking leads to a problematic view on mathematics and its relation to reality. Finally, I outline an alternative approach to mathematical modelling according to Deleuze’s differential ontology.
