Attribution Of Soil Surface Temperature Sensitivity To Hydro-Climatic Drivers, Sarah Khalid, Marco Maneta
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Greenhouse gas emissions caused by human economic activity are altering the global hydrologic cycle and the energy exchanges at the land surface. In large portions of the western US there is evidence of reduced summertime precipitation and increased air temperatures and longwave irradiation. At local scales, these changes can translate into more frequent and intense extreme land surface temperature events during the summer, with potential impacts on wildfire activity, forest health, soil biochemical cycles, and thermal comfort for human populations. However, because increases in radiation and sensible heat (air temperature) inputs to the land surface are confounded with changes in …

It has been suggested that hillslope topography can produce hydrologic refugia, sites where ecosystem productivity is relatively insensitive to climate variation. However, the ecological impacts and spatial distribution of these sites are poorly resolved across gradients in climate. We quantified the response of ecosystem net primary productivity to changes in the annual climatic water balance for 30 years using pixel‐specific linear regression (30‐m resolution) across the western United States. The standardized slopes of these models represent ecosystem climate sensitivity and provide a means to identify drought‐resistant ecosystems. Productive and resistant ecosystems were most frequent in convergent hillslope positions, especially in …

Helium In Stream Water As A Volcanic Monitoring Tool, W. Payton Gardner, David D. Susong

We show that synoptic sampling of streams can be used to characterize volcanic volatiles in groundwater over large spatial scales. Synoptic sampling of dissolved noble gases, 222Rn, major ions, and stream discharge was carried out along a 30 km reach of the Gibbon River, near Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, USA. Groundwater discharge location, volume, and composition were estimated by constrained calibration of a stream flow and solute transport model. Estimated groundwater composition from stream modeling was compared to shallow groundwater concentrations measured in nearby springs. 3He, 222Rn, and Cl− aq signatures in the Gibbon River are indicative …

New techniques have recently been developed and applied to capture reactive nitrogen species, including nitrogen oxides (NOx D NOCNO2), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid (HNO3), and particulate nitrate (pNO3 ), for accurate measurement of their isotopic composition. Here, we report – for the first time – the isotopic composition of HONO from biomass burning (BB) emissions collected during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments Experiment (FIREX, later evolved into FIREX-AQ) at the Missoula Fire Science Laboratory in the fall of 2016. We used our newly developed annular denuder system (ADS), which was verified to completely capture HONO associated …

This study was conducted for the Whitefish Farmers Market to provide insights into the characteristics of attendees of the 2019 Whitefish Farmers Market. There were 192 surveys completed using tablets on site during the 2019 farmers market season. Of the valid residence responses, Montana residents made up 76% of the respondents and of those Montana residents, 83% were from Whitefish. Out-of-area respondents spent an average of 5.17 nights away from home. Of those nights, an average of 5.81 nights were in Montana and 3.44 nights (on average) were in Whitefish. Rental home/cabin/condo purchases received the highest total dollars spent during …

Fake news may be trending right now, but fake news is not the only source of fake facts that we consume. We encounter fake facts every day in the historical or biographical books we read, the movies we watch, the maps we study, the tele-phone directories and dictionaries we reference, and the religious or spiritual guides we consult. While it is well-established that copyright does not protect facts because facts are discovered rather than created, fake facts are created and can often be as original and creative as fiction.

On The Structure Of Linearizations For Rational Approximations Of Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems, Maria C. Quintana
On The Structure Of Linearizations For Rational Approximations Of Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems, Maria C. Quintana
Colloquia of the Department of Mathematical Sciences
Given a nonlinear matrix-valued function F(\lambda):\mathbb{C} \longrightarrow \mathbb{C}^{m\times m}, the Non-Linear Eigenvalue Problem (NLEP) consists in computing numbers \lambda \in \mathbb{C} (eigenvalues) and non-zero vectors v \in \mathbb{C}^{m} (eigenvectors) such that
F(\lambda) v = 0,
under the regularity assumption \det(F(z)) \not\equiv 0. NLEPs arise in a variety of applications in Physics and Engineering. Nowadays, a useful approach to tackle them is based on Rational Approximation (RA), which leads to rational eigenvalue problems (REPs). Then, for solving REPs, linearizations of rational matrices are used, which is one of the most competitive methods for this task. In this talk we present the …

Diverse Conditions Support Near-Zero Growth In Yeast: Implications For The Study Of Cell Lifespan, Jordan Gulli, Emily Cook, Eugene Kroll, Adam Rosebrock, Amy Caudy, Frank Rosenzweig
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Baker’s yeast has a finite lifespan and ages in two ways: a mother cell can only divide so many times (its replicative lifespan), and a non-dividing cell can only live so long (its chronological lifespan). Wild and laboratory yeast strains exhibit natural variation for each type of lifespan, and the genetic basis for this variation has been generalized to other eukaryotes, including met-azoans. To date, yeast chronological lifespan has chiefly been studied in relation to the rate and mode of functional decline among non-dividing cells in nutrient-depleted batch culture. However, this culture method does not accurately capture two major classes …
Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Dha Diet Modification, Yoon Hee Cho
Epigenetic Biomarkers For Mwcnt Exposure And Dha Diet Modification, Yoon Hee Cho
University Grant Program Reports
Comprehensive studies of ENM toxicity and bioactivity remain challenging, despite their growing use for industrial and biomedical applications. Furthermore, mechanistic predictive models and data necessary to understand the factors contributing to their pathology are largely lacking. Epigenetic alterations are known to hold substantial potential as biomarkers for environmental exposures; this, in turn, may provide insight into mechanisms of environmentally related diseases and allow for a better understanding of disease etiology. The primary goal of this study is to determine epigenetic alterations associated with a DHA-supplemented diet and MWCNT exposure, and the relationship to decreased inflammation and development of lung disease.

Preview; Maryland Casualty Company V. The Asbestos Claims Court, And The Honorable Amy Eddy, Asbestos Claims Court Judge: What Duty Does A Workers' Compensation Insurer Owe The Employees Of Its Insured?, Hannah I. Higgins
Montana Law Review Online
This case presents two significant issues. The overarching issue is whether a Writ of Supervisory Control will be granted to resolve the underlying issue: what duty, if any, a workers’ compensation insurer owes the employees of its insured. The resolution of the underlying issue will be an important one, both within the multitude of pending asbestos claims in Montana and beyond. The Petitioner, Maryland Casualty Company, claims the Asbestos Claims Court used an improper standard in determining that Maryland Casualty Company owed a duty to the employees of its insured, W.R. Grace & Company.
