Psychological Adjustment And Relational Development In Ethiopian Adoptees And Their Families, Waganesh Zeleke
Psychological Adjustment And Relational Development In Ethiopian Adoptees And Their Families, Waganesh Zeleke
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The number of American families choosing to adopt a child from Ethiopia has increased exponentially since 2004. Over the past five years alone, between 2006 and 2011, 13.5% of internationally adopted children in the U.S. came from Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to examine psychological adjustment and relational development of Ethiopian adoptees who have been adopted during 2007 -2010 and their families who reside in Montana.
Using a convenience-sampling method, data were collected from 25 adoptive parents who adopted a total of 35 children from Ethiopia. All families live in Montana and responded to questions through an online …
Relationships Between Childhood Trauma And Eating Pathology, Lindsay Katherine Crosby
Relationships Between Childhood Trauma And Eating Pathology, Lindsay Katherine Crosby
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Past research has demonstrated that a correlation exists between trauma exposure and eating disorder pathology. Specifically, sexual abuse has been implicated in the development of eating disorders, with particular attention focused on bulimia nervosa. However, the relationship between other types of trauma exposure and eating pathology has yet to be delineated, particularly how different types of trauma exposure may be related to disordered eating behaviors. The current study explored this relationship. Results showed while some experiences of trauma history predicted a proportion of the variance associated with disordered eating behaviors, others showed a positive but not significant correlation. Clinical implications, …

Independent Living and Community Participation
Ultimately, the challenge of health care reform is the challenge of building community (Shortell et al., 1996). It makes little sense to discuss health without also discussing environment. Environments may be toxic physical environments due to pollution, noise and crime, or toxic social environments that promote health risk behavior like smoking and sedentary living. Alternatively, environments may be constructed to promote health behavior (e.g., physical activity) or reduce health risks (e.g., indoor smoking policy). In either case, the population’s health status is shaped by their environment. Rural people are less healthy than urban people (Institute of Medicine, 2005). Rural environments …

Implementation & Evaluation Of A Peer Mentor Walking Program For Transitionally Housed Women In Missoula, Mt, Emily Jane Williams
Implementation & Evaluation Of A Peer Mentor Walking Program For Transitionally Housed Women In Missoula, Mt, Emily Jane Williams
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Single women and families with children are rapidly growing segments of the homeless population (NCH, 2009b). Homeless women generally report a lower quality of life, and are at a greater risk for various physical and mental health issues than their housed counterparts (NCH, 2009a). Mental illness, including depression and anxiety, impacts 20 to 25% of the homeless population in the United States, compared to 6% of the general population (NCH, 2009b). Social support can serve as a mediating factor between undesirable life events and depression (La Gory, Ritchey, Mullis, 1990). Unfortunately, the social support system among homeless individuals is sometimes …

The Relationship Among Washington State County Commissioners Knowledge And Perceptions Of Washington State University Extension And Their Willingness To Fund Wsu Extension, James Hilmer Lindstrom
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The study determined the relationship between perceptions that the Washington State county commissioners' hold of WSU Extension and their knowledge of WSU Extension. In addition, the study determined whether their perceptions, knowledge, and/or understanding of Extension are related to and thereby may have predictability to their willingness to provide the essential local funding to continue the educational programs Extension delivers. The study addressed the interest Washington State county commissioners/county council members have in funding WSU Extension, which directly affects the critical element of maximizing Extension's impact on society. As a publicly funded educational organization, WSU Extension faces an uncertain fiscal …

Changing Attitudes: Congressional Rhetoric, Race, And Education Inequalities, Jennifer Kathleen Richert
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Richert, Jennifer Kathleen, M.A., May 2007 IYFD Changing Attitudes: Congressional Rhetoric, Race, and Education Inequalities Chairperson: Otto Koester Through an analysis of Congressional rhetoric regarding public school in the context of racial equality, three terms emerge as reoccurring concepts that drive discussions on contemporary educational conversations: narrowing the gap, disadvantaged students, and accountability. I have designed this study to determine whether the way politicians in U.S. Congress use these terms have racial undertones that ultimately work to maintain a culture of minority oppression. This study opens with an introduction describing my personal interest, followed with an extensive literature review regarding …

The Nature Of Nonprofit Professional Development And Training In Montana, Jenni Johanna Pohjoispuro
The Nature Of Nonprofit Professional Development And Training In Montana, Jenni Johanna Pohjoispuro
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Since sociology of nonprofit professionals and organizations is new and sociologists have not yet been able to theorize or adequately address the strategies and behavior of nonprofit organizations, this study is to give an in-depth view on the nature of nonprofit professional development and training in Montana. The research examines the similarities and differences between rural and urban nonprofit organizations and professionals in the United States depending upon the degree of rural setting, values, attitudes, culture, and challenges. To address the research topic, institutional theories on organizational behavior are applied to this study. The social capital theory is used to …
