Attitudes Toward Execution: The Tragic And Grotesque Framing Of Capital Punishment In The News, Katherine Shuy Jan 2016

Attitudes Toward Execution: The Tragic And Grotesque Framing Of Capital Punishment In The News, Katherine Shuy

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This essay undertakes a detailed frame analysis of print and electronic media coverage of three nationally publicized death penalty cases between the years of 2014 and 2015. Drawing specifically from the work of Kenneth Burke (1984), this research argues that tragically framed death penalty cases reify victim/perpetrator discourses and cause the actual act of execution to be a fitting resolution within a narrative. Burke’s (1984) grotesque-mystical frame and Bakhtin’s (1984) theory of the grotesque body are used to argue that the media’s portrayal of botched executions help highlight the incongruities with the system of capital punishment, and cause audiences to …

Another Day In The Oil Patch: Narratives Of Probation Work In Montana, Ally Guldborg Jan 2016

Another Day In The Oil Patch: Narratives Of Probation Work In Montana, Ally Guldborg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Job stress has been linked to several negative outcomes for workers in human service professions. Despite a wealth of knowledge on job stress in social service occupations, relatively little is known about the job stress of probation officers. In eastern Montana and western North Dakota’s Bakken region, a recent oil extraction boom and bust cycle has caused rapid socio-demographic change. Researchers have found that oil extraction in the Bakken region has led to several challenges for social service and police agencies in the area. In this study, I use qualitative interview methods to examine the stresses and challenges involved in …

Which Came First, People Or Pollution? A Review Of Theory And Evidence From Longitudinal Environmental Justice Studies, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha Dec 2015

Which Came First, People Or Pollution? A Review Of Theory And Evidence From Longitudinal Environmental Justice Studies, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

A considerable number of quantitative analyses have been conducted in the past several decades that demonstrate the existence of racial and socioeconomic disparities in the distribution of a wide variety of environmental hazards. The vast majority of these have been cross-sectional, snapshot studies employing data on hazardous facilities and population characteristics at only one point in time. Although some limited hypotheses can be tested with cross-sectional data, fully understanding how present-day disparities come about requires longitudinal analyses that examine the demographic characteristics of sites at the time of facility siting and track demographic changes after siting. Relatively few such studies …

Which Came First, People Or Pollution? Assessing The Disparate Siting And Post-Siting Demographic Change Hypotheses Of Environmental Injustice, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha Nov 2015

Which Came First, People Or Pollution? Assessing The Disparate Siting And Post-Siting Demographic Change Hypotheses Of Environmental Injustice, Paul Mohai, Robin Saha

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Although a large body of quantitative environmental justice research exists, only a handful of studies have examined the processes by which racial and socioeconomic disparities in the location of polluting industrial facilities can occur. These studies have had mixed results, we contend, principally because of methodological differences, that is, the use of the unit-hazard coincidence method as compared to distance-based methods. This study is the first national-level environmental justice study to conduct longitudinal analyses using distance-based methods. Our purposes are to: (1) determine whether disparate siting, post-siting demographic change, or a combination of the two created present-day disparities; (2) test …

Transcending Boundaries: Achieving Success In Cooperative Management Of Natural Resources, Public Land & Resources Law Review

Public Land & Resources Law Review

This year’s conference examines the innovative management of natural resources across international, state, local, and tribal boundaries. Our panelists will share success stories of transboundary resource management on our three conference panels related to water, wildlife, and climate and energy.

Rather than review historic problems, this conference focuses on creative solutions and success stories. Our goals are to provide a national platform to present new scholarship, to examine significant current events, to foster collaboration, and to inform future policy.

Thank you all for attending,

Public Land & Resources Law Review Editors and Staff

Katz, Mary Oschwald, Rebecca Goe, Sandra Leotti, Leah Grantham, Eddie Plourde, Janice Salomon, Rosemary Hughes, Laurie E. Powers, The Partnering With People With Disabilities To Address Violence Consortium

Rural Institute Journal Articles

Background: People with developmental disabilities (DD) are often not included as participants in research owing to a variety of ethical and practical challenges. One major challenge is that traditional measurements instruments may not be accessible to people with DD. Participatory research approaches promise to increase the participation of marginalized communities in research, but few partnerships have successfully used such approaches to conduct quantitative studies people with DD.

Objective: To use a community-based participatory search (CBPR) approach to create an accessible, computer-assisted survey about violence and health in people with DD, and to psychometrically test adapted health instruments.

Methods: Our academic-community …

Risky Research Business: Mathematics Education Research On The Margins, Erika C. Bullock Jun 2015

Risky Research Business: Mathematics Education Research On The Margins, Erika C. Bullock

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Although we would like to believe that decisions about what research to conduct and how to conduct it are based solely on researcher interest and societal need, the reality is that external political and disciplinary factors do play a role. Scientifically based research (SBR) is one example of external political pressures that shape researcher choice both directly and indirectly. Additionally, disciplines like mathematics education operate under hidden curricula that have the potential to marginalize particular research foci. The purpose of this paper is to consider the implications of such a narrow focus on a young mathematics education researcher’s choices about …

Risk—A Fundamental Condition Of Doing Mathematics, Wolff-Michael Roth, Jean-François Maheux Jun 2015

Risk—A Fundamental Condition Of Doing Mathematics, Wolff-Michael Roth, Jean-François Maheux

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The theme of this special issue is risk. But risk is not a common topic of investigation in mathematics education, lest it be an occasional interest in “at risk” students, generally defined as those who likely will fail at school. In this study, we are not interested in this rather limited use of the risk concept. Instead, we show that risk not only is a condition of human life generally, but also a necessity for teaching and learning mathematics. To show this, we develop the concept of risk with materials from a second-grade mathematics unit on geometry. Implications are drawn …

Pedagogy Of Risk: Why And How Should We Teach Risk In High School Math Classes?, Nenad Radakovic Jun 2015

Pedagogy Of Risk: Why And How Should We Teach Risk In High School Math Classes?, Nenad Radakovic

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Risk is everywhere yet the concept of risk is seldom investigated in high school mathematics. After presenting arguments for teaching risk in the context of high school mathematics, the article describes a case study of teaching risk in two grade 11 classes in Canada- an all-boy independent school (23 boys) and a publicly funded religious school (19 girls and 4 boys). The findings suggest that the students possessed intuitive knowledge that risk of an event should be assessed by both its likelihood and its impact. Following and amending pedagogic model of risk (Levinson, R., Kent, P., Pratt, D., Kapadia, R., …

Adults’ Perceptions Of Risk In The Big Data Era, Theodosia Prodromou Jun 2015

Adults’ Perceptions Of Risk In The Big Data Era, Theodosia Prodromou

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present digital era has seen rapid growth in the availability of big data; we were curious about whether such availability of data changes perceptions and assessments of risk. In this paper, we investigate adults’ (35-63 years old) perceptions of risk in the big-data era and how it figures in their everyday life. We developed decision-making scenarios for socio-economic, environmental and health topics that involve modelling with personal value systems alongside Gapminder word map data. Going beyond the idea of risk in statistical theory, we attempt to gain an understanding of the processes by which adults assess risks.

Risk Education: A Worldview Analysis Of What Is Present And Could Be, Gale L. Russell Jun 2015

Risk Education: A Worldview Analysis Of What Is Present And Could Be, Gale L. Russell

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Risk, risk analysis, risk management and risk-based decision-making are ubiquitous ideas in the modern world. Consequently, risk education is emerging as a new field of research. However, just as the defining of risk and what it entails is a contested topic, so too is the field of risk education research open to many possible approaches. In this paper notions of risk, particularly as they play out in research on risk education, are analyzed (within an ethical space) using a theoretical framework based on the Traditional Western and an Indigenous worldview. Through this analysis, along with the identification of the kinds …
