Internal And External Comments On Course Evaluations And Their Relationship To Course Grades, Hilary Smith Risser

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The validity of student evaluations of courses and the relationship between evaluations and course outcomes has frequently been examined. Since many course evaluations give students an opportunity to provide answers to open-ended questions in addition to giving Likert scale ratings, it is important to understand the relationship between these responses and course outcomes. This study examined the relationship between student responses to open ended questions (specifically whether they attributed their achievement to factors within their control or factors not within their control) and their outcomes in the course. The results of the study indicate that students that identified external factors …

The New Freedom Initiative Transportation Program, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Alexandra Enders, Grace Silvia, University Of Montana Rural Institute May 2010

The New Freedom Initiative Transportation Program, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Alexandra Enders, Grace Silvia, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Rural advocates frequently cite the lack of public transportation as one of the most significant problems faced by rural Americans with disabilities (Gonzales, Stombaugh, Seekins & Kasnitz, 2006). Transportation is often critical both to accessing health care, and to becoming and staying employed (Johnson & Shaw, 2001). Section 5317, the New Freedom Initiative for Transportation, a program created by the 2005 federal transportation act (SAFETEA-LU, P.L. 109-59), is designed to “go beyond the ADA” and find new ways to provide transportation for people with disabilities. In each state, local providers compete for funding from the program. Funding may not be …

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2009-2010, Kelly Webster Jan 2010

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2009-2010, Kelly Webster

The Writing Center: Reports

The 2009-2010 academic year marked continued growth and change in The Writing Center’s services. Persistent faculty and student desire for effective writing tutoring and instruction compelled Writing Center staff to find innovative ways to keep apace the growing demand for Writing Center services. Conducting 4,053 one-to-one consultations with undergraduate and graduate student writers, The Writing Center remained flexible enough to meet students’ needs for well-informed readers and for writing instruction throughout their academic tenures. Writing Center staff facilitated more consultations and presented more in-class workshops at the invitation of faculty than in any previous academic year, a fact that speaks …

Constitutionalizing Economic, Social, And Cultural Rights In The New Millenium, Katherine Virginia Aldrich Jan 2010

Constitutionalizing Economic, Social, And Cultural Rights In The New Millenium, Katherine Virginia Aldrich

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

With the emergence of recent democracies, scholars engaged in a polemic debate about whether economic, social, and cultural rights should be included in national constitutions. Because economic, social, and cultural rights appeared to require significant political decision-making directly related to resources and economic priorities, critics contended that they were non-justiciable; treating economic, social, and cultural rights as justiciable would infringe on the balance of power among government branches. This thesis argues that constitutional entrenchment of such rights is appropriate to their realization in the twenty-first century because other methods of recognition may not sufficiently address implementation problems. Furthermore, it argues …

Evaluating And Comparing Montana's Geotravelers, Dylan Michael Boyle Jan 2010

Evaluating And Comparing Montana's Geotravelers, Dylan Michael Boyle

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Recently, the state of Montana has taken steps to manage and market its tourism industry under the principles of geotourism. Geotourism is an integrated form of sustainable tourism aimed at maintaining and enhancing the geographical character of a destination by focusing upon multiple aspects of the travel experience (Stokes, Cook, & Drew, 2003). After an initial study on geotourism in Montana (Boley & Nickerson, 2009) confirmed the presence of geotravelers in the Crown of the Continent region, research interest now lies in learning more about the geotouristic tendencies of visitors at the statewide level. The purpose of this study was …

Gender, Body, And Wilderness: Searching For Refuge, Connection, And Ecological Belonging, Angela Marie Meyer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this study was to explore, describe, and explain how people (gbtlq identified persons in particular) experience gender and body in wilderness settings. The motivations for this research include: the current context of gender and gender oppression in American society; the potential of wilderness experiences to offer different ways of being and escape from social constrictions; and gaps in the literature on gender and wilderness. A qualitative/interpretive approach was employed for this research which encompasses aspects of phenomenology, feminist methodology, and grounded theory. The results and analysis for this study yielded an analytical story about ecological belonging which …

Inbetween, Cathryn Sugg Jan 2010

Inbetween, Cathryn Sugg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

“I work in the gap between art and life.” So said Robert Rauschenberg, of his own art, decades ago. Little did I know that my experiences in graduate school, and the translation of those experiences into artworks, would be defined by “gaps”: the physical gap of 450 miles, separating me from my husband, the intellectual gap representing the types of conversation I found myself engaging in, the illusive gaps between the different “roles” I have always used to define myself. In the past three years I developed an awareness of my social situation, during which I have found (and continue …

Resource Debate In Southwest Alaska: The Bristol Bay Fishery And The Pebble Mine, Ethan Jerome Gottschalk Jan 2010

Resource Debate In Southwest Alaska: The Bristol Bay Fishery And The Pebble Mine, Ethan Jerome Gottschalk

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Bristol Bay, in Southwest Alaska, is the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world. After an almost total collapse of salmon numbers in the mid 1970’s, the salmon have returned and average in the tens of millions every year. The salmon play a vital economic, cultural, and subsistence role in the lives of the people who call Bristol Bay home. At present there is a plan to develop a low-grade, but substantial, mineral deposit that consists primarily of copper, gold, and molybdenum. The estimated value of the minerals present is more than $500 billion. This plan is known as the …

Predictors Of Posttraumatic Growth, Shame, And Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms In Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence: The Roles Of Social Support And Coping, Nancy-Jane Kimberly Doane Jan 2010

Predictors Of Posttraumatic Growth, Shame, And Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms In Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence: The Roles Of Social Support And Coping, Nancy-Jane Kimberly Doane

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Research suggests that college students suffer higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) than older adults, with between 30 and 60 percent experiencing one or more violent events by their intimates (O'Hearn & Margolin, 2000). Unfortunately, IPV can result in severe psychological complications, including depression, anxiety, problems with interpersonal relationships, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and shame (Coker et al., 2002; Coker et al., 2003; Kaura & Lohman, 2007; Taylor, 2003). However, research indicates that certain religious and general coping styles and social support can serve as resilience factors, buffering victims from the negative consequences of IPV (Bosch & Schumm, 2004; …

Fuels Management Policy And Practice In The U.S. Forest Service, Erik K. Hakanson Jan 2010

Fuels Management Policy And Practice In The U.S. Forest Service, Erik K. Hakanson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This dissertation investigates the history and development of wildland fire and fuels management policy in the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the implementation of this policy in fuels management project planning at the national forest and ranger district levels. The policy guiding fuels management is broad and ambiguous but may be summarized as: 1) reducing the risks posed by wildland fire and 2) restoring or maintaining ecosystem health and sustainability. Wildland fire management policy is interagency in scope, including input from state governments and is dispersed among a multitude of policy and strategy documents, such as the 1995/2001 Federal Wildland …

Effect Of A Structured Exercise Program On Physical Activity Patterns And Assessing Relationships Between Accelerometry And Strength And Running Performance Characteristics In Male, College Students, Vernon Matthew Grant

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a supervised exercise training program on physical activity (PA) patterns. A secondary objective of the study was to determine if accelerometers can predict variables associated with strength and running performance. A total of 79 adult, male, college students completed a 12 week exercise training program that consisted of pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, and running three hours per week. The subjects trained three days/week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and conducted a performance test (PT) every Wednesday. Physical activity (average daily time spent in sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous PA), performance …

Do Traditional Sociological Variables Apply The Same In American Indian Communities? A Comparison Of The Effects Of Social Disorganization, Social Bond, And Social Learning Variables On Delinquency And Substance Use Among Merican Indian, White, And Other Race Youth, Wendy Linn Running Crane Jan 2010

Do Traditional Sociological Variables Apply The Same In American Indian Communities? A Comparison Of The Effects Of Social Disorganization, Social Bond, And Social Learning Variables On Delinquency And Substance Use Among Merican Indian, White, And Other Race Youth, Wendy Linn Running Crane

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The history and current situations of American Indians are unique and important arenas to forward the study of crime and delinquency. There may be no better group available to study the combined effects of concentrated disadvantage, social disorganization, and abrupt societal change than the modern day American Indian community. But do traditional variables constructed to test sociological theories fit the study of this population? Findings from hypotheses testing the differences in overall effects of social control, social disorganization, social bonding, and social learning variables on delinquency and substance use suggest that there are differences in their ability to account for …

ABSTRACT Garella, Jeanine Sandra, M.A., Autumn 2010 Geography Geographilia in Children’s Urban Spaces: Investigating How Children Explore Outdoor Places and Connect With Natural Objects Chairperson: Jeffrey A. Gritzner The benefits children receive from outdoor play time are well documented by scholars across many disciplines. Interacting within an unstructured natural setting can foster physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth. The lessons learned in such an environment not only help children reach developmental milestones; they also play an important role in the formation of beliefs and attitudes used in decision-making processes later in life. This is a significant point to make when …

Gender And Mathematics Education In Pakistan: A Situation Analysis, Anjum Halai

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper reports from a situation analysis of gender issues in mathematics education in Pakistan. It was undertaken at the initiation of a large scale project which aimed to understand how curriculum change in mathematics and science education may be implemented in ways that contribute to poverty alleviation and promote gender equity in disadvantaged rural settings. The paper posits that issues of access, achievement and quality of mathematics education are integrally linked with questions of equity, in this case gender equity. It identifies several questions and arenas for further research and makes recommendations for policy and practice in mathematics education.

Money Does Grow On Trees: A. B. Hammond And The Age Of The Lumber Baron, Gregory Llewellyn Gordon Jan 2010

Money Does Grow On Trees: A. B. Hammond And The Age Of The Lumber Baron, Gregory Llewellyn Gordon

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Two highly contrasting views inform our view of America's Industrial Era (1877-1920). The "captains of industry" thesis holds that America's industrial and economic might depended on creative capitalists freely pursuing individual wealth. The opposing "robber baron" perspective holds that the capitalist free-market system engendered a great disparity of wealth and resulted in social and environmental costs while accruing benefits to the few.

In seeking to understand the Industrial Era historians have traditionally looked toward the top echelon of American businessmen: Rockefeller, Gould, Morgan, and the like, largely ignoring the scores of second-tier capitalists. The era of "laissez-faire" capitalism, however, was …

The Effects Of Brief Psychoeducation On Adolescents' Depressive Symptoms And Perceptions Of Parenting, Mallory Mcbride Jan 2010

The Effects Of Brief Psychoeducation On Adolescents' Depressive Symptoms And Perceptions Of Parenting, Mallory Mcbride

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Adolescent depression is a mental health disorder that occurs during the teenage years and involves chronic and persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest in usual activities, as well as a broad range of additional physical and emotional symptoms. These maladaptive symptoms have repercussions across all areas of adolescents' functioning. One area that is affected when an adolescent is depressed is how the adolescent perceives his/her world, experiences, and situations. Research demonstrates that depressed adolescents are likely to perceive a wide variety of events and situations in overly negative ways, including their parents' parental styles and behaviors. One avenue …
