Filling The Gaps In Accessible Transportation, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Since 1975, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has used grant programs as a mechanism to fill transportation gaps so that people with disabilities and older individuals can effectively use public transportation. The first state grants in the Section 5310 program were awarded in 1975. SAFETEA-LU (2005) created the New Freedom Program (Section 5317), and made the Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC, Section 5316) available to all states. All three programs are similarly administered at the state level and are contingent on inclusion in a locally developed coordinated public transit - human services transportation plan. Congress and the Administration have recommended …

Climate Change & Tourism Literature Review, Norma P. Nickerson, Laura Becerra, Phil Zumstein

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Climate change and global warming have become "hot" topics of research over the past decade. Tourism is intimately a part of the climate change issue. The purpose of this literature review was to identify and understand where, how much, and what type of topics related to climate change and tourism currently exist in the literature.

Research On Practical Rationality: Studying The Justification Of Actions In Mathematics Teaching, Patricio Herbst, Daniel Chazan Jul 2011

Research On Practical Rationality: Studying The Justification Of Actions In Mathematics Teaching, Patricio Herbst, Daniel Chazan

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Building on our earlier work conceptualizing teaching as the management of instructional exchanges, we lay out a theory of the practical rationality of mathematics teaching—that is, a theory of the grounds upon which instructional actions specific to mathematics can be justified or rebuffed. We do that from a perspective informed by what experienced practitioners consider viable but also in ways that suggest operational avenues for the study of instructional improvement, in particular for improvements that enable students to do more authentic mathematical work. We show how different kinds of experiments can be used to engage in theory building and provide …

Practical Rationality, The Disciplinary Obligation, And Authentic Mathematical Work: A Look At Geometry, Deborah Moore-Russo, Michael Weiss Jul 2011

Practical Rationality, The Disciplinary Obligation, And Authentic Mathematical Work: A Look At Geometry, Deborah Moore-Russo, Michael Weiss

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Grossman and McDonald (2008) recently argued that the research community needs to move its “attention beyond the cognitive demands of teaching … to an expanded view of teaching that focuses on teaching as a practice (p. 185).” Building on the work of Bourdieu (Bourdieu and Wacquent, 1992; Bourdieu, 1985, 1998), Herbst and Chazan (2003, 2006) have written about mathematics teaching as a practice, just as law and medicine are considered practices, in an attempt to better understand the rationality that produces, regulates, and sustains mathematics instruction. This practical rationality is the commonly held system of dispositions or the “feel for …

Accessibility Report Card For Missoula, Montana: Missoula's Gpa Is 3.32 – Earning A "B", University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Community infrastructure – both public and private – influences the quality of life and the health of citizens. For people with disabilities, physical accessibility is a critical aspect of infrastructure. Nonetheless, community planners often lack reliable information for assessing accessibility. Therefore, we are developing standard assessments of access1 that city planners can use to identify areas in need of improvement. To determine a town’s accessibility, we rate parking location and signage; safety and accessibility of route to the business’ entry; parking accessibility; and the accessibility of a business’ entry, door and doorway, and interior. We previously assessed the accessibility of …

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2010-2011, Kelly Webster Jan 2011

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2010-2011, Kelly Webster

The Writing Center: Reports

During the 2010-2011 academic year, The Writing Center, an Office for Student Success department, answered President Engstrom’s call for a “spirit of discourse” on the University of Montana campus. Writing Center staff engaged students in intellectual conversations, challenging students to develop as writers and thinkers who contribute to local and global conversations. Toward this end, The Writing Center (TWC) sustained its one-to-one tutoring services and implemented new initiatives aimed at improving student writing across the curriculum. These 2010-2011 academic year activities responded to and engendered student and faculty demand for TWC’s services as evidenced by TWC’s facilitation of 3,852 tutoring …

Steatite On The Juniata: Early Pottery At The Sunny Side Site (36bd267), Central Pennsylvania, Douglas H. Macdonald, Eric P. Scuoteguazza, David L. Cremeens

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Archaeological excavations recovered early steatite-tempered pottery at the Sunny Side site (36BD267), Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The Sunny Side site is on a floodplain/terrace of Yellow Creek near its confluence with the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. A 70-cm-wide hearth was excavated along with associated Selden Island steatite-tempered pottery and lithic debris at a depth of 94 cm below ground surface in a buried Ab horizon. A hickory wood charcoal sample from the hearth was dated to 3500±100 B.P. (CAL BC 2120 - 2090 and BC 2050 - 1540). The early pottery at the Sunny Side site confirms prior work …

Trading Places: What The Research Participant Can Tell The Investigator About Informed Consent, Ann Freeman Cook, Helena Hoas

Psychology Faculty Publications

The issues discussed in this article emerged from a study that explored the decision-making processes used by research participants when deciding to participate in human subjects’ research. We discuss the current research and regulatory environment and its influences on participant decision-making. The results of this study create a framework for understanding the challenges of the current informed consent process and offers insights into what may be needed to create an environment that allows research participants to make more enlightened decisions.

Effects Of Stereotype Activation On Self-Concepts: Differences Between Native American & Caucasian College Students, Laura R. John Jan 2011

Effects Of Stereotype Activation On Self-Concepts: Differences Between Native American & Caucasian College Students, Laura R. John

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Prior research has shown that when individuals are exposed to stereotype activation (SA) mechanisms, such as priming, their subsequent behavior often conforms to stereotypical expectations. Previous studies have focused on measuring stereotype activation primarily with manipulations of task completion after subjects are exposed to a prime. This study intended to expand the current research by exploring the effect of SA on an individual’s self-concept. Research was conducted with Native American and Caucasian college students using an ethnicity salient questionnaire as a means of SA. Participants then completed self-report measurements associated with Native American stereotypes. It was hypothesized that priming Native …
