Background
Although the current Clinical Practice Guideline recommend Motivational Interviewing for use with smokers not ready to quit, the strength of evidence for its use is rated as not optimal. The purpose of the present study is to address key methodological limitations of previous studies by ensuring fidelity in the delivery of the Motivational Interviewing intervention, using an attention-matched control condition, and focusing on unmotivated smokers whom meta-analyses have indicated may benefit most from Motivational Interviewing. It is hypothesized that MI will be more effective at inducing quit attempts and smoking cessation at 6-month follow-up than brief advice to quit …

The Writing Center Annual Report: 2011-2012, Kelly Webster
The Writing Center: Reports
During the 2011-2012 academic year, The Writing Center, an Office for Student Success department, implemented programming specifically to address the University of Montana’s identified Strategic Issues and objectives. In doing so, The Writing Center (TWC) marshaled its resources to support students, faculty, and staff in their efforts to become more independent, versatile, and effective writers across the curriculum. This programming responded not only to the University’s Strategic Plan but also to growing student and faculty demand for Writing Center services. Writing Center staff engaged students in intellectual conversations, challenging students to develop as writers and thinkers who contribute to local …

Subjective Quality Of Life In Dialysis Patients, Cindy Schaumberg
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
With the ever increasing ability of medical technology to prolong life, quality of life is an increasingly legitimate medical outcome. This is an ethnographic study on the perceived quality of life of hemodialysis dependent end stage renal disease patients. Findings addressed the utility of dialysis for patients of, patient values leading to renal replacement therapy, and issues that might make patients perceive treatment as futile.

Coping As A Mediator Between Childhood Trauma And Current Trauma Symptoms In Female Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Aryn Violet Ziehnert
Coping As A Mediator Between Childhood Trauma And Current Trauma Symptoms In Female Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Aryn Violet Ziehnert
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been estimated to affect one in four women in her lifetime (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000), and research has found that women with previous childhood abuse experiences are more likely to enter into relationships with IPV. The purpose of the current study was to investigate differences between female IPV survivors who have and who have not experienced childhood abuse. Three hundred and ninety four women, recruited through flyers across Western Montana, participated in the original study (Fiore & Kennedy, 2000). They were interviewed on different aspects of their most recent violent relationship, their past experiences with …
Implementing Montana's Indian Education For All: A Phenomenological Study On The Experiences, Beliefs, And Practices Of Outstanding Providers Of Professional Development, Anna E. Baldwin
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 1999 the state of Montana included in its educational legal code a requirement that all Montanans learn about Montana's indigenous populations and that such knowledge be transmitted in a culturally sensitive manner. This law, called Indian Education for All (IEFA), has created challenges and rewards for educators. To learn to implement the law, teachers have participated in many types of professional development, especially since the mandate was funded in 2005. In some cases, these opportunities have been exemplary and effective, and more professional development must be offered to teachers. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to describe …
Influence Of Positive Expectancies And Adaptive Goal Investment On Relationship Abuse, Geniel H. Armstrong
Influence Of Positive Expectancies And Adaptive Goal Investment On Relationship Abuse, Geniel H. Armstrong
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics 21.5% of women and 3.6% of men were identified as victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) between 2001 and 2005 (Catalano, 2007). However, it is likely that these are underestimated rates due to un-reported incidents of IPV. A national survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and prevention found that 35.6% of women and 28.5% of men reported having experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some time in their life (Black, Basile, Breiding, Smith, Walters et al., 2011). Several attempts have been made to address the problem …

The Effects Of A Career Development Course On Career And College Major Decision-Making In College Students, Sidra Tabassum Ashraf Baig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study explored the effects of a semester-long, 2 credit career development course on the undecided college students. Participants included undergraduate students enrolled in the Career Development (COUN 105) class and comparison group students enrolled in Introductory Psychology (PSYX 100), and Intimate and Family Relationship (COUN 295) classes at The University of Montana. Students were assessed at the beginning and the end of the Spring and Fall semesters, 2010 by using the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 1983), Career Orientation scale, Career Decision Scale (Osipow et al., 1976), and Decisional Process Inventory (Hartung, 1994). The main …
Off Risking: Offender Risk Assessment And The Correctional Assessment And Intervention System, Eden Heeder
Off Risking: Offender Risk Assessment And The Correctional Assessment And Intervention System, Eden Heeder
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
In 2010 the State of Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) licensed the Correctional Assessment and Intervention System (CAIS) to address the high rate of recidivism among Co-occurring and Native American offenders. Montana DOC reported a significantly lower rate of revocation among the offenders assessed by the CAIS. Quantitative and Qualitative analyses were conducted to determine what aspects of the program facilitated the lower rates of revocation. Results of this analysis determined that several factors acting in concert contributed to the lower rates of revocation with the most meaningful contribution being that of rapport built between the probation officer and offender.
Coming To The Surface: The Environment, Health, And Culture In Butte, Montana, Stacie Lynn Barry
Coming To The Surface: The Environment, Health, And Culture In Butte, Montana, Stacie Lynn Barry
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Butte is a small town in southwest Montana that was profoundly shaped by over a century of mining and smelting activities. Today, Butte is a post-industrial city that is the focal point of America's largest Superfund site as well as the nation's largest National Historic District. There are two types of remediation occurring in Butte: environmental and cultural. Environmental remediation occurs throughout the city, most notably at the operable units of the Butte Superfund sites. This remediation does not restore the environment to its original state but instead reclaims it to a level of risk deemed acceptable by the EPA. …
