Second Wind, Anne A. Yoncha Jan 2019

Second Wind, Anne A. Yoncha

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

Second Wind is a kinetic, responsive art installation which examines invisible processes taking place in and around a Ponderosa pine tree. Wind speed data, measured at 20', 25', 30', 35', and 40' in the canopy of a Ponderosa on the University of Montana campus, is translated into the gallery in real time using two Raspberry Pi single-board computers. This data determines the velocity of five fans in the gallery. Each fan interacts with a suspended vellum paper structure which moves more or less depending on wind speed. The vellum is painted with an ink made of fermented pine needles from …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa Apr 2018

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (an artifact; a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. The problem is that the object of ideological desire is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Historical Archaeologist Mark P. Leone attempted to locate such an object several times while conducting archaeological investigations into historical Mormonism, Mormon historical ecology, and technologies employed by Mormons in the arid American West. It is posited here that the object of Mormon ideological desire in the archaeological record within …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William Dale Schroeder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. This is problematic because ideology is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Archaeology’s preoccupation for over 100 years has been the systematic location, identification, and excavation of discrete artifacts; features, and sites; interpreting meanings from comparative studies and data sets; and putting the past in order all while documenting change over time. Historical archaeologist Mark P. Leone identified fences, the Plat of the ideal City of Zion, …

Vulnerable Populations' Perspectives On Climate Engineering, Wylie Allen Carr Jan 2015

Vulnerable Populations' Perspectives On Climate Engineering, Wylie Allen Carr

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Over the past decade, climate engineering—or the intentional, large-scale manipulation of the global environment to reduce or reverse anthropogenic climate change—has garnered increasing attention from scientists and policymakers. However, impacts from climate engineering will be unevenly distributed. Vulnerable populations already being disproportionately impacted by climate change might benefit or be made worse off. As such, legislators, members of the public, and academics alike have asserted that vulnerable populations deserve to have a say in the research and development of climate engineering technologies and the policies that will govern them. These calls have gone largely unfulfilled. The research presented in this …
