Emphasizing “Me” Or “We”: Training Framing And Self-Concept In Network-Based Leadership Development, Theresa M. Floyd, Kristin L. Cullen-Lester, Houston F. Lester, Travis J. Grosser

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

This study explores how the motivational framing of a network training program may positively or (inadvertently) adversely impact participants' discomfort with strategic networking and motivation to network. We examine the impact of a “me-focused” framing (i.e., on the personal career benefits that individuals can accrue through strategic networking) and a “we-focused” framing (i.e., on the benefits to the team/organization of individuals' strategic networking) compared to a control group in two field-based quasi-experiments. In both studies, we found no difference between the two training frames in their effect on the two training outcomes when looking at participants' reactions, on average. However, …

A Social Network Perspective On Workplace Inclusion: The Role Of Network Closure, Network Centrality, And Need For Affiliation, Travis J. Grosser, Christopher M. Sterling, Rohit S. Piplani, Kristin L. Cullen-Lester, Theresa M. Floyd Jan 2022

A Social Network Perspective On Workplace Inclusion: The Role Of Network Closure, Network Centrality, And Need For Affiliation, Travis J. Grosser, Christopher M. Sterling, Rohit S. Piplani, Kristin L. Cullen-Lester, Theresa M. Floyd

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Organizations are increasingly recognizing the important role employee inclusion perceptions play in promoting positive employee attitudes and behaviors. Although social networks are frequently cited as being a driver of perceived inclusion, little empirical work has examined the social network conditions that give rise to it. We address this gap by examining how both network position (indegree centrality) and network structure (network closure) relate to perceived workplace inclusion. We test our hypotheses with a sample of 364 professionals in a multinational pharmaceutical firm. We find that both indegree centrality and network closure are positively related to perceived workplace inclusion. The relationship …

The concept of adaptive capacity has received significant attention within social-ecological and environmental change research. Within both the resilience and vulnerability literatures specifically, adaptive capacity has emerged as a fundamental concept for assessing the ability of social-ecological systems to adapt to environmental change. Although methods and indicators used to evaluate adaptive capacity are broad, the focus of existing scholarship has predominately been at the individual- and household- levels. However, the capacities necessary for humans to adapt to global environmental change are often a function of individual and societal characteristics, as well as cumulative and emergent capacities across communities and jurisdictions. …

Mathematical Learning Difficulties: A Subjective Production, Amanda Marina Andrade Medeiros, Cristiano Alberto Muniz Jan 2022

Mathematical Learning Difficulties: A Subjective Production, Amanda Marina Andrade Medeiros, Cristiano Alberto Muniz

The Mathematics Enthusiast

It is necessary to expand the analysis about affective processes in mathematic learning in different contexts. In Brazil this research area is still in the embryonic phase, but it is a space that has strong potential to respond the gaps that still exist in the field, leading to the understanding affective processes in mathematic learning. It is in this way that the present research aims to analyze how the mathematic learning difficulty is produced in the subjectivity of a child from the elementary school in Brazil. To understand how the student's development occurs in the school space, and how the …

Mathematics Education In Field Education Contexts, Aldinete Silvino De Lima, Iranete Maria Da Silva Lima, Carlos Eduardo Ferreira Monteiro, Liliane Maria Teixeira Lima De Carvalho

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article approaches the relationship between mathematics education and field education, based on the academic production of the research group on mathematics education in field education contexts (Gpemce) created in 2008 at the Federal University of Pernambuco. After presenting the repercussions and lines of research of the group, we reflect on the roots and principles of field education and some approximations of this domain with mathematics education. Then, we present a documentary study, whose corpus consists of 20 articles published in journals by researchers from Gpemce from 2009 to 2020. These articles are organised around four thematic categories that are …

In the United States and Canada, Native women, girls, and two-spirit people are stolen and killed at a disproportionate rate. Despite their pleas for justice, non-indigenous media are reluctant to give Indigenous voices a platform to incite change. Critically, the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) is not endemic to North America, but permeates through aboriginal life on every continent as a tool of settler colonialism. Existing literature on the topic of MMIWG2S has traced the roots of the crisis to settler colonialism and to non-Indigenous popular culture, but there is a gap in …

This article aims to present a public policy of large-scale literacy teachers continued training, the Pacto Nacional pela Alfabetização na Idade Certa (PNAIC), making a summary of the Brazilian dissertations and theses results which approached this public policy in the context of Mathematical Education. Initiated in 2012, the PNAIC involved more than three hundred thousand literacy teachers, from more than five thousand cities for five years. This article uses a qualitative research approach, in the descriptive modality, showing a status of the art of these researches. The set of works analyzed was divided into three groups, according to their …
