Explaining The Disclosure Of Risky Secrets: A Test Of Two Models, Stephen M. Yoshimura, Annie Hickock, Haley Powell, Bryn Sokoloski, Brenna Spurling

Communication Studies Student Scholarship

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that perceived partner responsiveness is a parsimonious theoretical predictor of secret disclosure in romantic relationships, and to compare the efficacy of the perceived partner responsiveness model against the revelation risk model. Using an online questionnaire, 95 respondents in an ongoing committed romantic relationship reported on a secret they had been keeping, responded to measures of the revelation risk model predictors and of perceived partner responsiveness, and indicated whether or not they have revealed the secret to a relationship partner. The results show that the revelation risk model was a better …

Environmental Education In Informal Learning Spaces: Integration, Design, And Access, Maya S. Gutierrez May 2023

Environmental Education In Informal Learning Spaces: Integration, Design, And Access, Maya S. Gutierrez

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

In this portfolio, I will focus on using learning spaces to facilitate environmental education and promote environmental literacy. I will discuss the incorporation of the framework of environmental education into an experiential and informal learning environment; the creation of a curriculum that fuses formal and informal learning, providing upper elementary students opportunities to participate in hands-on experiential learning opportunities of environmental education; and the direct and indirect benefits nature-based experiences can provide when implemented into a therapeutic group home. Embedded throughout is an environmental education framework that has been adapted for the diverse setting and requirements of the respective organization …

Overlap Of Cognates In The Bilingual Mental Lexicon: A Cognate Continuum Model, Ashlynn Everett, Juhi Singh, Mila Tasseva-Kurkchieva Apr 2023

Overlap Of Cognates In The Bilingual Mental Lexicon: A Cognate Continuum Model, Ashlynn Everett, Juhi Singh, Mila Tasseva-Kurkchieva

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Purpose: Cognates (i.e., words that share meanings and pronunciations in more than one language) are uniquely suited to provide insight into the bilingual mental lexicon due to their overlapping nature. Previous researchers have used a cognate/non-cognate distinction (Dijkstra & Van Heuven, 2002) or measurements of orthographic changes in words (Peeters et. al, 2013) to evaluate this overlap. By comparison, this study aimed to examine how phonological and syntactic differences between cognates impact language processing in bilinguals.

Methods: Researchers categorized cognates by level of phonological overlap as identified by listeners’ ratings of similarity. These categories were described as 1) true cognates …

Depictions Of Strikes On Social Media, Zachary D. Mangels Apr 2023

Depictions Of Strikes On Social Media, Zachary D. Mangels

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Social media provides a rich source for the study of social movements. Not only do movement organizations use social media as a platform to spread their message and organize, but users can also share their thoughts about a particular movement with ease. This project seeks to understand how the socioeconomic status and gender of a social movement’s participants affect the public’s reaction to their activities. This is done by studying how these movements are described on Twitter, and if these descriptions differ among different striking professions. The types of social movement I intend to study are all strikes which were …

Student-Athlete Mental Health: University Of Montana Case Study, Abigail M. Sherwood Apr 2023

Student-Athlete Mental Health: University Of Montana Case Study, Abigail M. Sherwood

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Student-athletes at the collegiate level experience high levels of pressure that can impact their mental health. When athletes crack under this pressure, many wonder where to draw the line between healthy and excessive pressures. Despite international examples (e.g. Naomi Osaka withdrawing from the French Open in 2021, Simone Biles withdrawing from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and many collegiate athletes taking their own lives), some backlash still remains towards athletes prioritizing their mental health. The athletic department at the University of Montana currently offers counseling sessions free to student-athletes. However, student-athletes have expressed mental health concerns; yet many of the sessions …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Title: Alienation as a Global and Local Issue

Purpose: We asked questions to determine if alienation is an issue that needs to be addressed and how to address it. With the help of our University of Montana campus and experts, we now better understand alienation as it exists and doesn’t exist on campus.

Methods: We analyzed data and responses collected from a survey advertised across campus, as well as conducted interviews with students and experts in the field of alienation.

Significance: Provide valuable information and data to empower our campus community to live in such a way that eradicates and …

The Benefits Of School-Community Partnership In Indigenous Communities, Caitlin Carvalho, Susie Michalek, Tori Horton Apr 2023

The Benefits Of School-Community Partnership In Indigenous Communities, Caitlin Carvalho, Susie Michalek, Tori Horton

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Research has shown that a more effective learning environment is established for students to thrive when there is a collaborative relationship between schools and community members (i.e., administrators, teachers, parents, community representatives). One author defines this type of relationship by saying that, “using k’é as a framework to discuss community and school community partnerships...community is an ongoing system of recognizing and maintaining harmonious relationships that can support the youth through partnerships based on relationships” (Kulago, 73). K’é encapsulates the complexity of relationships and how partnerships can be beneficial towards the members of the community. Kulago also discusses how these relationships …

Effects Of Cultural Matching And Identity Safety: An Examination Of Indigenous Student’S School Experiences, Tori Horton, Susie Michalek, Caitlin Carvalho Apr 2023

Effects Of Cultural Matching And Identity Safety: An Examination Of Indigenous Student’S School Experiences, Tori Horton, Susie Michalek, Caitlin Carvalho

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Cultural matching refers to the reflection of one’s own culture in day-to-day life, which is critical for nurturing one’s sense of acceptance and identity in the world (Rip et.al., 2020). Identity safety is when one’s social identity is welcomed and valued rather than viewed as a barrier to success The presence of cultural matching and identity safety is important in educational settings throughout childhood and adolescence, as both are crucial to students’ overall well-being and identity. Opportunities to express one’s culture in the classroom is essential for a sense of belonging and safety (Steele & Cohen-Vargas, 2013); however, Indigenous students …

Addressing Eco-Emotions: An Initiative For Coping With Climate-Induced Emotional Distress, Kaitlyn M. Blume, Cassie Berg, Sylvia Wood, Jack Person, Sylvia Luceno, Alis Auch, Siena Cysewski

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

"Addressing Eco-Emotions: An Initiative for Coping with Climate-Induced Emotional Distress" is a research project aimed at tackling the growing challenge of eco-emotions, such as eco-grief or eco-anxiety, brought about by the impacts of climate change. Despite the complex and widespread nature of the issue, and the limited training of the group in the field of mental health, the goal is to raise awareness about eco-emotions and provide a supportive space for individuals to process their feelings related to the climate crisis. Through hosting a week-long series of events, each tailored to a different coping mechanism for eco-emotions, the project aims …

Storied Numbers A Review Of Alex Bellos’S Grapes Of Math: How Life Reflects Numbers And Numbers Reflect Life, John Bragelman Apr 2023

Storied Numbers A Review Of Alex Bellos’S Grapes Of Math: How Life Reflects Numbers And Numbers Reflect Life, John Bragelman

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Bellos’s (2010) Grapes of Math is not a book about the history of mathematics, although he includes maths histories. It is not a math textbook, although he leads the reader through a variety of mathematical concepts. It does not follow the life of a great mathematician, scientist, or philosopher, although they make their presence known throughout the book. Rather, Grapes of Math it lies at the intersection of these concepts. It is a book of stories, stories of mathematical ideas and the cultures that informed their development. And Bellos is a gifted storyteller.

The Birth Of A Review Or (How Villani Both Reinforces And Challenges Our Beliefs About Mathematics) A Review Of Cédric Villani’S Birth Of A Theorem: A Mathematical Adventure, Manon Leblanc Apr 2023

The Birth Of A Review Or (How Villani Both Reinforces And Challenges Our Beliefs About Mathematics) A Review Of Cédric Villani’S Birth Of A Theorem: A Mathematical Adventure, Manon Leblanc

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In the book Birth of a Theorem: A Mathematical Adventure, Cédric Villani paints a portrait of himself, from the (dare I say) obsessed mathematician who works until the wee hours of the night, to the ordinary citizen, enjoying an impressive variety of music, to the slightly odd man sporting an ornamental spider daily. From Lyon to Paris, through the despair of not being able to eat quality cheese, Villani takes us on a journey, revisiting the path that led him to win the Fields Medal. He takes us back in time and punctuates his account with anecdotes or stories of …
