Risk And Decision Making: The “Logic” Of Probability, Manfred Borovcnik Jun 2015

Risk And Decision Making: The “Logic” Of Probability, Manfred Borovcnik

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Risk is a hot topic. There is an international trend to use examples of risk or the concept of risk in the early teaching of probability. It enriches the problems, it widens the contexts, and it motivates the students to learn probability. This paper illustrates the notion of risk as a multi-faceted concept. The diverse perceptions start with language where risk is used in very different ways. The overlap of risk and hazard is not restricted to the technical context of safety and reliability; Knight’s seminal work on risk and uncertainty has its definite impact on today’s perception of the …

Comparing Two Prophylactic Dysphagia Treatments For Patients With Head And Neck Cancer, Laurie Slovarp Apr 2015

Comparing Two Prophylactic Dysphagia Treatments For Patients With Head And Neck Cancer, Laurie Slovarp

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Introduction

Dysphagia (swallowing impairment) is the most common side effect of radiation therapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) (Greven et al., 2003; McColloch, Carroll, Magnuson, 2010). Dysphagia in this population is primarily a result of RT toxicity that includes mucositis (painful inflammation of the mucosal lining of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx), reduced taste, nausea, and dry mouth (Agarwala & Sbeitan, 2006; Gaziano, 2002; Groher & Crary, 2010; Sonis, 2004). Severe dysphagia necessitates the use of a feeding tube in many patients. Over 50% of patients remain dependent on a feeding tube at five months post …

Relactation: A Phenomenological Approach

Abstract

Background: Human breast milk is uniquely suited to the human infant’s nutritional needs. Breast milk is a live substance with immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect against a host of illnesses and diseases for both mothers and children.1 Research shows that mothers without reliable perceived support, access to breastfeeding support groups, lactation specialists, or support from family may lack the confidence to breastfeed or may discontinue breastfeeding before the recommended amount of time.2 Relactation is the process of re-establishing a breast milk supply that has diminished or ceased. Reasons women relactate include untimely …

Assessing Other Children In The Household Support Of Exercise And Healthy Eating, Samantha Dalton, Michael Tyron, Kari Jo Harris, Edward Running Rabbit, Daniel Heil, Blakely Brown Apr 2015

Assessing Other Children In The Household Support Of Exercise And Healthy Eating, Samantha Dalton, Michael Tyron, Kari Jo Harris, Edward Running Rabbit, Daniel Heil, Blakely Brown

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Childhood obesity is on the rise throughout the world. Overweight/obesity in childhood is a major risk factor for serious health consequences (Patchucki, Lovenheim, Harding, 2014). The family unit can address childhood obesity when the family works together to support each other in physical activity (PA) and healthy eating decisions. Sibling support may be particularly important due to the amount of time siblings spend with each other. Siblings’ impact on informal social behavior may be a more powerful motivator compared to formal parenting norms (Patchucki, Lovenheim, Harding, 2014). Having an obese younger sibling creates a five times greater likelihood the older …

Strategies For Mitigating Vitamin A Deficiency In Mekelle, Ethiopia, Erika Strehl, Kari Jo Harris, Blakely Brown, Gebre Meskel Mirtuse, Linnea Stanhope

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The fourth United Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDG) is to reduce worldwide child mortality by two-thirds. In the impoverished African country of Ethiopia, child mortality has declined from 123 per 1,000 in 2004/2005 to 88 per 1,000 in 2011/2012 (World Bank, 2013). Yet the rate remains alarmingly high. Micronutrient deficiencies (including iron, zinc, and vitamin A) are contributing to the worldwide child mortality rate. Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most common micronutrient. Between 250,000 and 500,000 children with vitamin A deficiency become blind each year. Within 12 months of becoming blind, half of these children die (World Health …

What Are The Impacts Of The South African Child Support Grant On Children’S Nutritional Status?, Guedem Dara Apr 2015

What Are The Impacts Of The South African Child Support Grant On Children’S Nutritional Status?, Guedem Dara

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Child malnutrition is persistent in many developing countries and is a serious problem. Shekar, Heaver and Lee (2006) found that “nearly one-third of children in the developing world are either underweight or stunted, and more than 30 percent of the developing world’s population suffers from micronutrients deficiencies” (p. ix). Children who have poor nutrition can’t do well in school, thus lowering their human capital (Aguero, et al. 2010); however, better nutrition has a significant impact on the health of children as well as their physical, and mental developmental (Plagerson, Patel, Harpham, Kielmann and Mathee 2010; Manley, Gitter, and Slavchevska (2012)). …

Faculty Research And Publication Practices, Kate Zoellner, Samantha Hines, Teressa M. Keenan, Sue Samson

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

Understanding faculty work practices can translate into improved library services. This study documents how education and behavioral science faculty locate, retrieve, and use information resources for research and writing and how they publish and store their research materials. The authors interviewed twelve professors using a structured interview instrument and analyzed the data. Findings cover the role of library services in scholarly research processes, as well as the use of software and technologies and the challenges faculty face.

Expressive Arts As A Means Of Increasing Well-Being In Children, Danielle L. Barnes-Smith, Jordan Frotz, Hanasara Ito, Johannah Kohorst, Emily Vascimini Jan 2015

Expressive Arts As A Means Of Increasing Well-Being In Children, Danielle L. Barnes-Smith, Jordan Frotz, Hanasara Ito, Johannah Kohorst, Emily Vascimini

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The purpose of this research is to discover the extent to which expressive arts increase well-being in children. Expressive arts are being defined here as theatre, dance, art, and creative writing. Well-being is defined as self-efficacy and self-worth. The project was carried out in a four-week expressive arts program designed to teach fifth grade elementary school students a variety of artistic disciplines (i.e. theatre, dance, art, and creative writing). Both before and after the workshop, the students completed measures of self-worth and self-efficacy; these measures were used to identify changes in students from the beginning of the program to the …

Farm-To-School In Montana: An Assessment Of Program Participation, Autumn Lee Jan 2015

Farm-To-School In Montana: An Assessment Of Program Participation, Autumn Lee

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Montana is a prominent player in the farm-to-school movement with its strong agricultural industry and its leadership in the farm-to-school FoodCorps program. Farm-to- school involves connecting students to food through local procurement, nutrition education, and garden immersion. Many researchers indicate that farm-to-school participation strengthens local economies, improves student health, and creates more cohesive communities, but the financial and logistical challenges of implementation signal the call for stronger policy and funding support. In this professional paper, I build upon previous research to understand the unique outcomes of farm-to-school participation in Montana and to explore the policy and funding needs specific to …
