Spontaneous Physical Activity In A Novel Mouse Model Of Muscular Dystrophy, Madison T. Mock
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
SPONTANEOUS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN A NOVEL MOUSE MODEL OF MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY M. Mock1, D. Moerkerke1, T. Quindry1, J. Selsby2, & J. Quindry1 1University of Montana, Missoula, MT 2Iowa State University, Ames, IA Muscular dystrophy (MD) is an incurable disease characterized by muscle degeneration. MD treatments require use of mouse models in preclinical studies. The DBA/2-congenic Dmdmdx (“D2”) mouse is a novel dystrophic model that is largely uncharacterized physiologically. Purpose: We examined physical activity (PA) in order to quantify the major movements of PA in a novel mouse model of MD. We examined whether 4-month old D2 mice (n=10) engage in …
Contrasting Two Prophylactic-Dysphagia Interventions For Patients With Head And Neck Cancer Treated With Radiotherapy With Or Without Adjunctive Chemotherapy, Maira L. Ambris
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) have a high risk of developing dysphagia resulting from radiation therapy (RT) with or without joint chemoradiation (CRT). Dysphagia reduces the quality of life (QOL) of these patients through psychosocial factors, reduction of effective swallowing, damage to the swallowing mechanism, and swallowing pain. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the effectiveness of two types of prophylactic swallowing exercises (PSE) in preventing dysphagia in patients with HNC who are receiving RT/CRT to maximize QOL by reducing the possible effects of dysphagia and related issues.
18 patients were selected based on the requirements …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Respiratory Function Within a novel Dystrophic Mice model
Purpose: Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disease resulting in progressive heart and skeletal muscle degeneration. The disease is characterized by inadequate dystrophin content in muscle cells. With no known cure, it’s essential to discover a medical intervention for DMD pathology. This research group explored variations of a nutritional based therapy as a potential treatment to DMD pathology, including respiratory dysfunction. Early results suggest that dietary quercetin supplementation may improve respiratory function but strategies for maximizing quercetin efficacy are needed. In this investigation respiratory function was examined following a new dietary …
Responding To Soil Fungal Communities: A Look At Interactions Between Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi And The Common Yellow Monkeyflower, Mariah Mcintosh
Responding To Soil Fungal Communities: A Look At Interactions Between Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi And The Common Yellow Monkeyflower, Mariah Mcintosh
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The obligate fungal mutualists arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonize the roots approximately 80% of vascular plants, generally thought to provide mineral nutrition, pathogen protection, or drought resistance to plants in exchange for photosynthetic carbon. Because of the ecological and evolutionary significance of these interactions, much work has been done to understand this symbiosis at the community level. However, much remains to be understood about how AMF affect plant fitness on an individual level. In this study, I took advantage of the tractability of the emerging model species Mimulus guttatus, the common yellow monkeyflower, to identify genetic differences in how contrasting …

SMS Parent Action iNtervention (SPAN): Using text messaging to promote child health on an American Indian Reservation
Purpose: Childhood obesity and its associated health risks are widely recognized as a major public health crisis in the United States (Johnson & Johnson, 2014; Proctor, 2008; Rogers et al, 2013; Vinci et al, 2016). Prevention efforts include focusing on educating parents with young children on healthy habits. Text messaging is an attractive means of communication because it is portable, cost-effective, accessible, and able to reach across demographic spheres to serve underserved and rural populations (Terry, 2008). The primary purpose of the SMS …

Common Core And Stem Opportunities, Lane H. Walker, Helene J. Sherman
The Mathematics Enthusiast
There is an increasing need for educators at all levels to equip more students with problem-solving skills that better fit our changing work force. Students are largely unaware of many science-, technology-, engineering-, and math-related (STEM) careers. They often do not understand the importance of those careers or what skills are required to pursue them. Students are exposed to some of those skills if they take Career Technical Education (CTE) classes, but rarely do they see the connections in their core math classes. Math teachers have pointed to their dense curricula as making STEM integration impractical. A study of the …
The Success Of Bottled Water: The Hidden Costs Hurt Us And The Environment, Cassandra Sevigny
The Success Of Bottled Water: The Hidden Costs Hurt Us And The Environment, Cassandra Sevigny
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Bottled water is consumed worldwide as both a matter of necessity and preference. People who need bottled water live in areas with compromised water sanitation, such as developing countries. People who prefer bottled water despite its higher price tag tend to live in areas that already have ready access to clean water, such as developing countries. These preferences for bottled water stem partly from taste and convenience, but are largely driven by advertising efforts by bottled water companies. The preference for bottled water leads to increased sales as well as increased cost. Costs include damages to health and the environment. …
Coffee Certifications As Potential Pathways To Women’S Empowerment In Costa Rica, Laura N. Stein
Coffee Certifications As Potential Pathways To Women’S Empowerment In Costa Rica, Laura N. Stein
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The market for certified coffee is rapidly expanding and influencing the environmental, economic, and social conditions of global coffee production. Overarching goals of coffee certification schemes, such as fair trade, include encouraging sustainable production practices and promoting equitable trade relations that enhance economic stability and quality of life for producers. Women play a significant role in the coffee industry; yet, they typically have little control over resources and harvest proceeds and limited participation in decision-making processes. Although some certification schemes, namely Fairtrade International, include gender equality and women’s empowerment initiatives, knowledge and understanding of how certifications can create pathways to …
The Role Of Behavior In The Effectiveness Of Indoor Air Pollution Interventions: Results From The Artis Study, Madison J. Cole
The Role Of Behavior In The Effectiveness Of Indoor Air Pollution Interventions: Results From The Artis Study, Madison J. Cole
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Using panel data from a randomized placebo-controlled trial of a wood stove changeout and air filter interventions, this study addresses the role of behavior in the efficacy of air quality interventions. The effectiveness of an intervention in improving air quality depends on how households respond to and use them. Two important responses are whether the target population complies with the requirements of the intervention and whether users adjust other behaviors that can affect air quality.
This paper’s results are consistent with prior studies in finding that in the absence of interventions, a number of behaviors can affect indoor air pollution, …
Sex Education In Montana Schools: An Assessment Of The Needs Of Sexual And Gender Minority Youth, Elizabeth A. Redinger, Annie Sondag
Sex Education In Montana Schools: An Assessment Of The Needs Of Sexual And Gender Minority Youth, Elizabeth A. Redinger, Annie Sondag
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Youth are particularly vulnerable to infection from HIV and STIs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, youth between the ages of 13 and 24 accounted for about 26% of all new HIV transmission cases in the United States in 2010, In young MSM specifically, there was a 22% increase in new infections from 2008 to 2010 (CDC, 2015). Education is one of the factors that plays a role in sexual health practices starting in high schools, yet in Montana there is no clear set of guidelines as to what is covered during sex education classes in the …

Nutritional Needs in Collegiate Female Soccer Athletes
Chairperson: Dr. Valerie Moody
Many times, athletes do not have enough time to meet their nutritional needs. They are busy going to school, attending meetings, lifting weights, receiving treatments and attending practices and may forget to eat or simply do not have enough time. Several studies suggest nutritional knowledge and habits directly impact how well an athlete will perform. Due to the rigorous training regimen of a collegiate athlete, they should be fueling their bodies throughout the day to maximize their performance. The Women’s soccer team …

Lgbtq-Inclusive Sexuality Education In Montana Public High Schools: An Assessment Of The Needs Of Health Enhancement Teachers, Andrew G. Johnson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
BACKGROUND
LGBTQ youth face many unique health challenges. Rates of depression and suicide are exponentially higher for LGBTQ youth than for their heterosexual, cisgender peers. Rates of HIV and STI infection are rising among this demographic. Comprehensive sexuality education has demonstrated the potential to address some of these health challenges. Specifically, it has been shown to delay the onset of sexual intercourse, and to reduce pregnancy and transmission rates of HIV and STIs among youth. Several studies have looked at LGBTQ-inclusive sexuality education from the perspective of LGBTQ students, but few have looked at this issue from the perspective of …
