Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez
Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The present research corroborates K. Sullivan's initial results as stated in her epoch making study about the effectiveness of teaching elementary calculus using Robinson's non standard approach. Our research added to her results related to the teaching of the elementary integral, with similar positive results. In this essay we propose a definition of the notion of cognitive advantage mentioned by Sullivan in expressing the dramatic differences in understanding of students of non standard calculus as opposed to those of its standard counterpart. Our proposal is based on ideas of Kitcher and Kuhn and allows us to better understand the didactics …

Full Circle: Building A Local Economy Through Pollinator Enterprises In The Food System, Catherine M. Demets
Full Circle: Building A Local Economy Through Pollinator Enterprises In The Food System, Catherine M. Demets
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
As the alternative food movement gains traction in mainstream American society, it is essential to document how enterprises in the movement are building robust local economies. As Eric Holt-Giménez (2010: 1) points out, the movement “has successfully shone the spotlight on hunger and food access in the US, created a drive for more local food, and gotten better policy from the federal to the local level,” yet no assurance exists that our society’s interest in food issues is not a passing fad. Rather, we should ask: “how do we turn initial reforms into lasting food system transformation?” (Holt-Giménez 2010: 1). …

Unlike other curriculums, sex education is widely varied in the methods of teaching, what age an individual receives this education, and what specifically is taught. This problem is universal, as often times, too many sensitivities concerning the effect it will have on a student’s character influence the outcome of sex education. Because of this, students and adults go through life with an inadequate understanding of their own sexual health. Ignorance about sexual health leads to unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, as well us an unfortunate confusion about one’s own body and the bodies of others. The …
Climate Change Action: Chilean Response To An Altering Environment, Rebecca L. Levandowski
Climate Change Action: Chilean Response To An Altering Environment, Rebecca L. Levandowski
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Chile is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world and recently published a "Plan de Accion Nacional de Cambio Climatico 2017-2022" (PANCC-II). This plan, further referred to as the National Action Plan, outlines their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change impacts on their country. The ambitious goals put them on the forefront of climate change action in South America. Due to lack of research, it is difficult to implement climate action plans including restoration and reforestation of degraded areas because there is little to no data on how to achieve these goals. This …
Chasing Plenty: A Documentary On Food Security In Montana, Kurt Swimley, Colin Brust, Aspen Anderson, John Potenberg, Nathaniel Smith
Chasing Plenty: A Documentary On Food Security In Montana, Kurt Swimley, Colin Brust, Aspen Anderson, John Potenberg, Nathaniel Smith
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Chasing Plenty: A Documentary on Food Security in Montana Our GLI group aims to examine the following question: how will climate change impact food security? To address this question we are conducting interviews in Montana. Despite being an agricultural state, many Montanans struggle with food insecurity, and are left without plentiful or healthy options for food. We aim to research this issue by interviewing local community members involved in food distribution. The interview data will be compiled in a short documentary discussing current issues in food security, how these problems are likely to evolve in the future, and propose solutions …
The Impact Of Outdoor Education On Health, Tessa A. Leake
The Impact Of Outdoor Education On Health, Tessa A. Leake
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
The effect, if any, that outdoor education and experiential learning has on health was studied by interviewing students who participated in the University of Montana’s Patagonia winter session study abroad course. I interviewed participants before and after the course and asked them a series of questions about their health. Questions included how they defined health, what the greatest determinants of health are, if they have control over their health, and if they considered themselves to be in good health. Students were also asked to rate their levels of health overall, mentally, and physically in regard to themselves and compared to …
Transgender Equality And Dignity Under The Montana Constitution, Caitlin E. Borgmann
Transgender Equality And Dignity Under The Montana Constitution, Caitlin E. Borgmann
Montana Law Review
The United States is seeing a wave of explicit anti-transgender animus, expressed in the form of legislation banishing transgender individuals from full participation in public life. In Montana, such a measure was defeated in the Legislature in the 2017 session. HB 609 would have discriminated against transgender individuals by prohibiting them from using the restroom, locker room, or changing facility in a government building or under public control that corresponds with their gender identity. Following the House Judiciary Committee’s rejection of HB 609, the Montana Family Foundation began collecting signatures on ballot initiative I-183, a nearly identical measure to HB …

Getting Back On Track: Bnsf Railway Co. V. Tyrrell Clarifies Fela Jurisdiction And Venue In State Court, Molenda L. Mccarty

The Federal Employers’ Liability Act (“FELA”) holds a railroad common carrier liable for injuries sustained by employees during their course of employment. Likewise, railroad carriers are liable to an employee’s personal representative for the death of an employee during the course and scope of employment. Section 56 of FELA establishes that FELA claims can be brought in the district where: the defendant railroad resides, the action arose, or the defendant railroad conducts business. It also establishes that federal jurisdiction shall be concurrent with that of the States. Although the United States Supreme Court had previously addressed Section 56, it made …

Plant traits are both responsive to local climate and strong predictors of primary productivity. We hypothesized that future climate change might promote a shift in global plant traits resulting in changes in Gross Primary Productivity (GPP). We characterized the relationship between key plant traits, namely Specific Leaf Area (SLA), height, and seed mass, and local climate and primary productivity. We found that by 2070, tropical and arid ecosystems will be more suitable for plants with relatively lower canopy height, SLA and seed mass, while far northern latitudes will favor woody and taller plants than at present. Using a network of …
