Marketing Health Promotion For People With Disabilities, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

Healthy People 2010 is the blueprint for improving the health and well being of all Americans. Its overall focus is to decrease health risks and to increase the proportion of people engaging in healthy behaviors. For the first time, Healthy People includes a chapter on the health of people with disabilities. Chapter Six specifically addresses secondary conditions as a public health concern. Secondary conditions are medical and psycho-social conditions people often experience following the onset of disabilities or chronic illnesses. Our research suggests people with disabilities annually experience 14 secondary conditions that limit their health and independence.

"Placing" Health Risks In The Karakoram: Local Perceptions Of Disease, Dependency, And Social Change In Northern Pakistan, Sarah Halvorson

Geography Faculty Publications

This article examines local perceptions of health risks in a mountain community in the Karakoram of Northern Pakistan. Specifically, it aims to show how the tremendous social and economic transformations taking place in this region are experienced and understood by the people most affected by them. The case study draws from ethnographic data collected through a range of methods, including personal narratives, focus groups, interviews, household surveys, conversations, and participant observations. Central to this analysis is the role that social change plays in mediating and shaping residents’ worries, and perceived vulnerabilities within this particular economic and cultural context. Furthermore, the …

Differences In Cottonwood Growth Between A Losing And A Gaining Reach Of An Alluvial Floodplain, Mary J. Harner, Jack Arthur Stanford Jun 2003

Differences In Cottonwood Growth Between A Losing And A Gaining Reach Of An Alluvial Floodplain, Mary J. Harner, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Interstitial flow of river (hyporheic) water influences algal productivity, benthic assemblages, and locations of fish spawning. However, little is known of the effects of hyporheic flow on the growth of riparian vegetation. By increasing water availability and nutrient delivery, regional upwelling of hyporheic water may increase the growth of terrestrial vegetation. We tested and accepted the hypothesis that cottonwood trees (Populus trichocarpa) in a gaining reach of an alluvial floodplain grow faster than trees in a losing reach by comparing basal areas and ages on an expansive floodplain in western Montana (USA). Trees in the gaining reach had …

Phenotypic Plasticity And Interactions Among Plants, Ragan M. Callaway, Steven C. Pennings, Christina L. Richards May 2003

Phenotypic Plasticity And Interactions Among Plants, Ragan M. Callaway, Steven C. Pennings, Christina L. Richards

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We know a great deal about the plastic responses of plant phenotypes to the abiotic and biotic environment, but very little about the consequences of phenotypic plasticity for plant communities. In other words, we know that plant traits can vary widely for a given genotype, but we know little about the importance of trait-mediated interactions (TMI) among plants. Here, we discuss three major factors that affect the expression of phenotypic plasticity: variation in the abiotic environment, variation in the presence or identity of neighbors, and variation in herbivory. We consider how plastic responses to these factors might affect interactions among …

This document reports on research conducted by the University of Montana and the University of Kansas for the Office of Disability and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The research project, conducted between August 1,1997 and July 31, 2001, was conducted in four separate but related studies. The research was conducted in eight States. We contracted with nine centers for independent living (CIL) to conduct 34 Living Well with a Disability health promotion workshops and to collect outcome measures. These programs included 246 individuals. In the first study, we evaluated the effectiveness and cost outcomes of the …

Estradiol Effects On The Growth Hormone/Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Axis In Amenorrheic Athletes, Debra L. Waters, Richard I. Dorin, Clifford R. Qualls, Brent Ruby, Richard N. Baumgartner, Robert A. Robergs

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

Disruption of the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis has been reported and studied in menopause, hypothalamic amenorrhea, and anorexia nervosa, but not in weight-stable amenorrheic athletes. We investigated the effects of short-term transdermal estradiol on basal and exercise-stimulated serum GH, IGF-1, and associated binding proteins (IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3) in seven weight-stable female amenorrheic athletes with percentage body fats greater that 12%. Each subject received a 72h placebo patch followed by 144h of transdermal estradiol. Serum samples for GH, IGF-1, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 were obtained at baseline (t1), 72hr (0), 144hr (6), and during three 90-minute trials of aerobic exercise. …

Five-Member Gene Family Of Bartonella Quintana, Michael F. Minnick, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S. Smitherman, Siv G. E. Andersson, Olof Karlberg, James A. Carroll Feb 2003

Five-Member Gene Family Of Bartonella Quintana, Michael F. Minnick, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S. Smitherman, Siv G. E. Andersson, Olof Karlberg, James A. Carroll

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella quintana, the agent of trench fever and an etiologic agent of bacillary angiomatosis, has an extraordinarily high hemin requirement for growth compared to other bacterial pathogens. We previously identified the major hemin receptor of the pathogen as a 30-kDa surface protein, termed HbpA. This report describes four additional homologues that share approximately 48% amino acid sequence identity with hbpA. Three of the genes form a paralagous cluster, termed hbpCAB, whereas the other members, hbpD and hbpE, are unlinked. Secondary structure predictions and other evidence suggest that Hbp family members are beta-barrels located in the outer membrane and contain eight …

Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter Family Members From Leishmania Donovani Are Electrogenic Proton Symporters, Alex Stein, Gayatri Vaseduvan, Nicola S. Carter, Buddy Ullman, Scott M. Landfear, Michael Kavanaugh Jan 2003

Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter Family Members From Leishmania Donovani Are Electrogenic Proton Symporters, Alex Stein, Gayatri Vaseduvan, Nicola S. Carter, Buddy Ullman, Scott M. Landfear, Michael Kavanaugh

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Leishmania donovani express two members of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family; LdNT1 encoded by two closely related and linked genes, LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2, that transport adenosine and pyrimidine nucleosides and LdNT2 that transports inosine and guanosine exclusively. LdNT1.1, LdNT1.2, and LdNT2 have been expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes and found to be electrogenic in the presence of nucleoside ligands for which they mediate transport. Further analysis revealed that ligand uptake and transport currents through LdNT1-type transporters are proton-dependent. In addition to the flux of protons that is coupled to the transport reaction, LdNT1 transporters mediate a variable constitutive proton …

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Changes to the global nitrogen cycle affect human health well beyond the associated benefits of increased food production. Many intensively fertilized crops become animal feed, helping to create disparities in world food distribution and leading to unbalanced diets, even in wealthy nations. Excessive air- and water-borne nitrogen are linked to respiratory ailments, cardiac disease, and several cancers. Ecological feedbacks to excess nitrogen can inhibit crop growth, increase allergenic pollen production, and potentially affect the dynamics of several vector-borne diseases, including West Nile virus, malaria, and cholera. These and other examples suggest that our increasing production and use of fixed nitrogen …
