The Articulation Principle For Making Long-Term Sense Of Mathematical Expressions By How They Are Spoken And Heard: Two Case Studies, Kin Eng Chin, Fui Fong Jiew, David Tall Jun 2022

The Articulation Principle For Making Long-Term Sense Of Mathematical Expressions By How They Are Spoken And Heard: Two Case Studies, Kin Eng Chin, Fui Fong Jiew, David Tall

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The Articulation Principle explains how mathematical expressions can be given a clear and unambiguous meaning by the way in which they are spoken and heard. Leaving short pauses in speech, sub-expressions can be interpreted as operations to be carried out in time or as mental objects that can be manipulated at a more sophisticated level. This offers a fundamental foundation for the growth of meaningful mathematical thinking at all levels from young children to the wide array of adult mathematics. This paper sets the Articulation Principle in a wider long-term learning framework and provides empirical evidence for its use in …

A Methodological Proposal For Textbook Analysis, Marilena Bittar

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Research on textbooks has been carried out in different countries and with different purposes, including a set of studies that seek to know what those books convey in their texts. This type of investigation gives a view of the textbook as something that gives materiality to the proposed curriculum as a way to approach the knowledge taught and/or to identify elements that contribute to understanding reasons for some learning difficulties and persistent errors. Since the early 2000s, I have guided research studies that seeks to understand what kind of mathematics is proposed in textbooks intended for Brazilian basic education and …

Cultivating An Active Learning Environment In A Traditional And Community Based Course, Sebastian James Driver Mr.

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Learning Assistants (LAs) are undergraduate students who complete a course and return to assist instructors in creating an active learning environment. From multiple studies, pedological and active learning techniques improve student retention, exam scores, and student participation. During the fall semester of 2021, I was an LA for two introductory courses, Pre-Calculus (M151) and Introduction to Honors (HONR120). In M151, I tested new active learning activities like practice problems, whiteboard activities, and Desmos activities. M151 prepares students for calculus and advanced science courses by building on previous algebraic and geometric theorems to manipulate these processes. M151 is “traditional” because in …

High Potential Antimicrobial Hit-Rate Of A Natural Product Fragment Reassembly Library, Evelyn Schwartz Mar 2022

High Potential Antimicrobial Hit-Rate Of A Natural Product Fragment Reassembly Library, Evelyn Schwartz

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Introduction of new antibiotics into the market is important and urgent. Over the past decade there have been few novel antibiotics and cases of antimicrobial resistance infections is expected to increase. Most antibiotics have been developed with structure-based drug design of known target mechanisms, or from natural products. The limit of using natural products is that many are already diverse and complex in structure and have limited synthetic flexibility. Fragments of natural products are more synthetically pliable and can be linked together similar to amino acids in peptide synthesis. An in-slica library of natural product fragment reassembly (NPFR) would provide …

Antidepressants Reduce Silica Caused Inflammation In Lung Macrophages, Becky Kendall

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Chronic respiratory disease remains a leading cause of death around the world, and recent events have only increased respiratory disease concerns. As such, there is a growing need for effective therapeutics to combat these and other chronic diseases. While the discovery and design of new pharmaceuticals can be a lengthy process there is an abundance of FDA approved drugs that can be repurposed for use in other than their originally intended uses. For example, the use of anti-depressants has been proposed as a potential therapy for COVID after a study showed that patients regularly taking anti-depressants had fewer COVID-caused hospitalizations …

Background: Vitamin D is a hormone produced in the skin upon ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Vitamin D is a crucial regulator of calcium and phosphate levels for bone mineralization and other physiological roles. Vitamin D levels vary globally in human populations due to genetics, geography, and other demographic factors. It is estimated that 20-85 % of the variability in vitamin D levels is driven by genetic variation. To improve our understanding of contributors to vitamin D levels, we conducted a candidate-gene study in partnership with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT).

Methods: We recruited 472 CSKT study participants on …

Tracking Changes In Groundwater Storage From Gnss Geodesy In The Great Lakes Region, Baleigh A. Doyle Mar 2022

Tracking Changes In Groundwater Storage From Gnss Geodesy In The Great Lakes Region, Baleigh A. Doyle

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

The Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, Ontario, Michigan, and Erie) make up for one-fifth of the freshwater surface area on the Earth (NOAA, 2021). Displacements of the Earth’s surface are caused by quasi-static loads at or near the surface, including surface water, soil moisture and groundwater, and can be predicted by evaluating a convolution integral over the loaded region. In this study, we aim to infer changes in groundwater storage in the Great Lakes region of the central U.S. at sub-monthly time scales. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data from the Network of the Americas (NOTA; previously known as PBO) are …
