Find (Y)Our Place In The Universe: Humanizing Curriculum Through Unit (Re)Design, Ashley R. Olsen, Abby Stitt, Jessica Van Kerkhove
The Montana English Journal
In this article, the authors share a revised unit from their district's core language arts program that utilizes areas of multimodality, criticality, and layered texts. The authors’ goal is to make the content accessible for all students while also incorporating marginalized perspectives. The authors describe how they drew on Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s (2020) Culturally Responsive Framework to provide a diverse unit of study that leverages the multimodal possibilities within layered text sets. The authors then emphasize the importance of humanizing the content and modes in which it is presented in order to foster a critical stance towards text.

Approaches And Tools To Solving Complex Problems In Private Land Conservation, John T. Curnyn
Approaches And Tools To Solving Complex Problems In Private Land Conservation, John T. Curnyn
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The central theme throughout my four portfolio pieces is: approaches and tools that can be used to address complex problems involving private land conservation. I consider the broader human and environmental community health to be factors in successful private land conservation. The first portfolio piece examines a number of studies of conservation easements implemented to improve water quality, as well as their utility in avoiding land use conflict. My second portfolio piece is a reflective paper on my experience conducting a stakeholder assessment for the organization OneMontana. The assessment focused on creating a shared understanding of the issues related to …

Alienation As A Global And Local Issue, Sequoia Gregorich, Cole Mathews, Daniel Ryan, Alexandra Berna, Olivia Kalvig
Alienation As A Global And Local Issue, Sequoia Gregorich, Cole Mathews, Daniel Ryan, Alexandra Berna, Olivia Kalvig
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Title: Alienation as a Global and Local Issue
Purpose: We asked questions to determine if alienation is an issue that needs to be addressed and how to address it. With the help of our University of Montana campus and experts, we now better understand alienation as it exists and doesn’t exist on campus.
Methods: We analyzed data and responses collected from a survey advertised across campus, as well as conducted interviews with students and experts in the field of alienation.
Significance: Provide valuable information and data to empower our campus community to live in such a way that eradicates and …
Storied Numbers A Review Of Alex Bellos’S Grapes Of Math: How Life Reflects Numbers And Numbers Reflect Life, John Bragelman
Storied Numbers A Review Of Alex Bellos’S Grapes Of Math: How Life Reflects Numbers And Numbers Reflect Life, John Bragelman
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Bellos’s (2010) Grapes of Math is not a book about the history of mathematics, although he includes maths histories. It is not a math textbook, although he leads the reader through a variety of mathematical concepts. It does not follow the life of a great mathematician, scientist, or philosopher, although they make their presence known throughout the book. Rather, Grapes of Math it lies at the intersection of these concepts. It is a book of stories, stories of mathematical ideas and the cultures that informed their development. And Bellos is a gifted storyteller.
Putting Math In Its Place A Review Of Cathy O’Neil’S Weapons Of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality And Threatens Democracy, Nathalie Sinclair
Putting Math In Its Place A Review Of Cathy O’Neil’S Weapons Of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality And Threatens Democracy, Nathalie Sinclair
The Mathematics Enthusiast
With its bright yellow cover and its ominous title, this book attracts attention. The subtitle, “How big data increases inequality and threatens democracy” signals very strongly that the “math” in question in the title is primarily that which relates to the statistical and computational means of collecting, analysing and using data. For some readers, the title might be surprising, because it challenges the typical understanding of mathematics as an objective and value-neutral discipline. Worse, it claims that mathematics is significantly involved in creating inequality and compromising democracy. If it is true, then the answer to the perennial student question, “when …
