Anomalous Wave Dispersion In The Cyclohexanedione-Bromate Chemical Oscillator, Ryan Boger Jan 2012

Anomalous Wave Dispersion In The Cyclohexanedione-Bromate Chemical Oscillator, Ryan Boger

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A modified six-variable Oregonator model presented here successfully reproduces a significant portion of the behavior observed in the Ferroin-catalyzed cyclohexanedione variant of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (CHD-BZ) reaction. The phenomena of anomalous velocity dispersion (in which following waves may catch up to, rather than fall behind an initial excitation wave), wave-stacking, and backfiring have been successfully reproduced numerically as resulting from non-monotonic [Br-] decay to the steady state in the wake of an excitation pulse. The non-monotonic decay is seen as a "dip" in [Br-] following the passage of a chemical wave. This dip in [Br-] decay curve allows a following wave …

Psychometric Evaluations Of An Acculturation Scale And An Acculturation Stress Scale With American Indian University Students, Michael Brian Trahan Jan 2012

Psychometric Evaluations Of An Acculturation Scale And An Acculturation Stress Scale With American Indian University Students, Michael Brian Trahan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Acculturation and acculturation stress are constructs studied with various minority groups. This study tests the factor loadings for both the Native American Acculturation Scale (N.A.A.S.) and the Social, Attitudinal, Familial, and Environmental Acculturation Stress Scale (S.A.F.E.), as well as the reliability of these measures with American Indian undergraduate and graduate students in a university setting. The first hypothesis was that the factor loadings of the N.A.A.S. with this sample would not resemble the original factor structure found by Garrett and Pichette (2000). It was also believed that the N.A.A.S. would exhibit robust reliability with this sample, based upon a previous, …

Muscle-Fiber Type And Blood Oxidative Stress After Eccentric Exercise, John Quindry, Lindsey Miller, Graham Mcginnis, Megan Irwin, Charles Dumke, Meir Magal, N, Travis Triplett, Jeffrey Mcbride, Zea Urbiztondo Dec 2011

Muscle-Fiber Type And Blood Oxidative Stress After Eccentric Exercise, John Quindry, Lindsey Miller, Graham Mcginnis, Megan Irwin, Charles Dumke, Meir Magal, N, Travis Triplett, Jeffrey Mcbride, Zea Urbiztondo

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

Acute strength exercise elicits a transient oxidative stress, but the factors underlying the magnitude of this response remain unknown. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether muscle-fiber type relates to the magnitude of blood oxidative stress after eccentric muscle activity. Eleven college-age men performed 3 sets of 50 eccentric knee-extensions. Blood samples taken pre-, post-, and 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr postexercise were assayed for comparison of muscle damage and oxidative-stress biomarkers including protein carbonyls (PCs). Vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were assayed for relative percentage of slow-and fast-twitch muscle fibers. There was a mixed fiber composition (Type …

Sensitivity Of The Frozen/Melted Basal Boundary To Perturbations Of Basal Traction And Geothermal Heat Flux : Isunnguata Sermia, Western Greenland, Douglas John Brinkerhoff, Toby Warren Meierbachtol, Jesse Johnson, Joel T. Harper Dec 2011

Sensitivity Of The Frozen/Melted Basal Boundary To Perturbations Of Basal Traction And Geothermal Heat Flux : Isunnguata Sermia, Western Greenland, Douglas John Brinkerhoff, Toby Warren Meierbachtol, Jesse Johnson, Joel T. Harper

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A full-stress, thermomechanically coupled, numerical model is used to explore the interaction between basal thermal conditions and motion of a terrestrially terminating section of the west Greenland ice sheet. The model domain is a two-dimensional flowline profile extending from the ice divide to the margin. We use data-assimilation techniques based on the adjoint model in order to optimize the basal traction field, minimizing the difference between modeled and observed surface velocities. We monitor the sensitivity of the frozen/melted boundary (FMB) to changes in prescribed geothermal heat flux and sliding speed by applying perturbations to each of these parameters. The FMB …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Subglacial lakes beneath Antarctica’s fast-moving ice streams are known to undergo ~1km3 volume changes on annual timescales. Focusing on the MacAyeal Ice Stream (MacIS) lake system, we create a simple model for the response of subglacial water distribution to lake discharge events through assimilation of lake volume changes estimated from Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry. We construct a steady-state water transport model in which known subglacial lakes are treated as either sinks or sources depending on the ICESat-derived filling or drainingrates. The modeled volume change rates of five large subglacial lakes in the downstream portion …

High-Resolution Study Of Layering Within The Percolation And Soaked Facies Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Joel Brown, Joel T. Harper, W. Tad Pfeffer, Neil Humphrey, John H. Bradford

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet, the relationship between radar-derived internal reflection horizons and the layered structure of the firm column is unclear. We conducted two small-scale ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys in conjunction with 10 m firm cores that we colleced within the percolation and soaked facies of the Greenland ice sheet. The two surveys were separated by the distance of about 50 km and about 340 m of elevation leading to about 40 days of difference in the duration of average annual melt. At the higher site (about 1997 ma.s.l.), which receives less melt, …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Heterotrimeric G protein alpha subunits are activated upon exchange of GDP for GTP at the nucleotide binding site of G alpha, catalyzed by guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs). In addition to transmembrane G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which act on G protein heterotrimers, members of the family cytosolic proteins typified by mammalian Ric-8A are GEFs for Gi/q/12/13-class G alpha subunits. Ric-8A binds to G alpha.GDP, resulting in the release of GDP. The Ric-8A complex with nucleotide-free G alpha i1 is stable, but dissociates upon binding of GTP to G alpha i1. To gain insight into the mechanism of Ric-8A-catalyzed GDP release …

Ocean acidification from anthropogenic CO2 has focused our attention on the importance of understanding the rates and mechanisms of CaCO3 formation so that changes can be monitored and feedbacks predicted. We present a method for determining the rate of CaCO3 production using in situ measureme nts of fCO(2) and pH in surface waters of the eastern subarctic Pacific Ocean. These quantities were determined on a surface mooring every 3 h for a period of about 9 months in 2007 at Ocean Station Papa (50 degrees N, 145 degrees W). We use the data in a simple surface ocean, mass balance …

Research On Practical Rationality: Studying The Justification Of Actions In Mathematics Teaching, Patricio Herbst, Daniel Chazan Jul 2011

Research On Practical Rationality: Studying The Justification Of Actions In Mathematics Teaching, Patricio Herbst, Daniel Chazan

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Building on our earlier work conceptualizing teaching as the management of instructional exchanges, we lay out a theory of the practical rationality of mathematics teaching—that is, a theory of the grounds upon which instructional actions specific to mathematics can be justified or rebuffed. We do that from a perspective informed by what experienced practitioners consider viable but also in ways that suggest operational avenues for the study of instructional improvement, in particular for improvements that enable students to do more authentic mathematical work. We show how different kinds of experiments can be used to engage in theory building and provide …

Complex Learning Through Cognitively Demanding Tasks, Lyn D. English Jul 2011

Complex Learning Through Cognitively Demanding Tasks, Lyn D. English

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The world’s increasing complexity, competitiveness, interconnectivity, and dependence on technology generate new challenges for nations and individuals that cannot be met by “continuing education as usual” (The National Academies, 2009). With the proliferation of complex systems have come new technologies for communication, collaboration, and conceptualization. These technologies have led to significant changes in the forms of mathematical thinking that are required beyond the classroom. This paper argues for the need to incorporate future-oriented understandings and competencies within the mathematics curriculum, through intellectually stimulating activities that draw upon multidisciplinary content and contexts. The paper also argues for greater recognition of children’s …

Conceptualizations And Issues Related To Learning Progressions, Learning Trajectories, And Levels Of Sophistication, Michael T. Battista

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper the nature of learning progressions and related concepts are discussed. The notions of learning progressions and learning trajectories are conceptualized and their usage is illustrated with the help of examples. In particular the nuances of instructional interventions utilizing these concepts are also discussed with implications for the teaching and learning of mathematics.

On The Idea Of Learning Trajectories: Promises And Pitfalls, Susan B. Empson Jul 2011

On The Idea Of Learning Trajectories: Promises And Pitfalls, Susan B. Empson

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Learning mathematics is a complex and multidimensional if not an inherently indeterminate process. A necessary goal of research on learning is to simplify this complexity without sacrificing the ability of research to inform teaching. This goal has been addressed in part by researchers focusing on how to represent research on learning for teachers and on how to support teachers to use and generate models of students’ learning (e.g., Franke, Carpenter, Levi, & Fennema, et al., 2001; Hammer & Schifter, 2001; Simon & Tzur, 2004; Steffe, 2004). Recently, the idea of learning trajectories has gained attention as a way to focus …

Can Dual Processing Theories Of Thinking Inform Conceptual Learning In Mathematics?, Ron Tzur

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Concurring with Uri Leron’s (2010) cross-disciplinary approach to two distinct modes of mathematical thinking, intuitive and analytic, I discuss his elaboration and adaptation to mathematics education of the cognitive psychology dual-processing theory (DPT) in terms of (a) the problem significance and (b) features of the theory he adapts. Then, I discuss DPT in light of a constructivist stance on the inseparability between thinking and learning. In particular, I propose a brain-based account of conceptual learning—the Reflection on Activity-Effect Relationship (Ref*AER) framework—as a plausible alternative to DPT. I discuss advantages of the Ref*AER framework over DPT for mathematics education.

Practical Rationality, The Disciplinary Obligation, And Authentic Mathematical Work: A Look At Geometry, Deborah Moore-Russo, Michael Weiss

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Grossman and McDonald (2008) recently argued that the research community needs to move its “attention beyond the cognitive demands of teaching … to an expanded view of teaching that focuses on teaching as a practice (p. 185).” Building on the work of Bourdieu (Bourdieu and Wacquent, 1992; Bourdieu, 1985, 1998), Herbst and Chazan (2003, 2006) have written about mathematics teaching as a practice, just as law and medicine are considered practices, in an attempt to better understand the rationality that produces, regulates, and sustains mathematics instruction. This practical rationality is the commonly held system of dispositions or the “feel for …
