Judgment Of Association Between Potential Factors And Associated Risk In 2x2 Tables: A Study With Psychology Students, Carmen Batanero, Gustavo R. Cañadas, Carmen Díaz, Maria M. Gea

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This study was aimed to evaluate the accuracy and strategies used in the estimation of association between potential factors and associated risks when data are presented in 2x2 tables. A sample of 414 undergraduate Psychology students from three different Spanish universities was given three different tasks (direct and inverse association and perfect independence) where they had to estimate such association. Most participants judged association in the task where there was perfect independence, but the data contradicted the students’ previous expectations. The estimation of association was consistent with the perception of association and the accuracy of estimates increased with correct strategies. …

Dividing A Pizza Into Equal Parts – An Easy Job?, Hans Humenberger Jun 2015

Dividing A Pizza Into Equal Parts – An Easy Job?, Hans Humenberger

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Theoretically seen dividing a pizza equally is not an easy task. For instance, with a normal knife (straight cuts) one has to hit the center so that the cut is a diameter. But there are alternatives (also for dividing equally between more than two persons) which have strong connections to elementary geometry and to integral calculus. This paper deals with these alternatives elucidating the so called “pizza theorem”.

We couple airborne, ground-based, and satellite observations; conduct regional simulations; and develop and apply an inversion technique to constrain hourly smoke emissions from the Rim Fire, the third largest observed in California, USA. Emissions constrainedwithmultiplatform data show notable nocturnal enhancements (sometimes over a factor of 20), correlate better with daily burned area data, and are a factor of 2–4 higher than a priori estimates, highlighting the need for improved characterization of diurnal profiles and day-to-day variability when modeling extreme fires. Constraining only with satellite data results in smaller enhancements mainly due to missing retrievals near the emissions source, suggesting that …

A Stabilized Finite Element Method For Calculating Balance Velocities In Ice Sheets, Douglas Brinkerhoff, Jesse Johnson May 2015

A Stabilized Finite Element Method For Calculating Balance Velocities In Ice Sheets, Douglas Brinkerhoff, Jesse Johnson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present a numerical method for calculating vertically averaged velocity fields using a mass conservation approach, commonly known as balance velocities. This allows for an unstructured grid, is not dependent on a heuristic flow routing algorithm, and is both parallelizable and efficient. We apply the method to calculate depth-averaged velocities of the Greenland Ice Sheet, and find that the method produces grid-independent velocity fields for a sufficient parameterization of horizontal plane stresses on flow directions. We show that balance velocity can be used as the forward model for a constrained optimization problem that can be used to fill gaps and …

Extracting New Periglacial Lacustrine Information From The 1970 Flathead Lake Seismic Survey Data, Christopher Casas Apr 2015

Extracting New Periglacial Lacustrine Information From The 1970 Flathead Lake Seismic Survey Data, Christopher Casas

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

On several seismic lines from the Flathead Lake Seismic Data signal, arrival patterns exhibited curving shapes that might indicate they are diffraction arrivals. This project attempted to resolve whether those patterns were the result of diffracted energy or were true reflections from subsurface features. Approximately 25 seismic lines were generated during the 1970 Flathead seismic survey and are stored online via the University of Montana Scholar Works site. I catalogued locations along various lines that fit the visual criteria for diffraction arrivals, and utilized computational engines (Python, and Awk) to calculate suites of diffraction curves taking into account the possible …

Quantifying Meltwater Refreezing Along A Transect Of Sites On The Greenland Ice Sheet, C. Cox, N. Humphrey, Joel T. Harper

Geosciences Faculty Publications

On the Greenland ice sheet, a significant quantity of surface meltwater refreezes within the firn, creating uncertainty in surface mass balance estimates. This refreezing has the potential to buffer seasonal runoff to future increases in melting, but direct measurement of the process remains difficult. We present a method for quantifying refreezing at point locations using in situ firn temperature observations. A time series of sub-hourly firn temperature profiles were collected over the course of two melt seasons from 2007 to 2009 along a transect of 11 sites in the accumulation zone of Greenland. Seasonal changes in temperature profiles combined with …

Thermal Boundary Conditions On Western Greenland: Observational Constraints And Impacts On The Modeled Thermomechanical State, Toby W. Meierbachtol, Joel T. Harper, Jesse V. Johnson, Neil F. Humphrey, Douglas John Brinkerhoff

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The surface and basal boundary conditions exert an important control on the thermodynamic state of the Greenland Ice Sheet, but their representation in numerical ice sheet models is poorly constrained due to the lack of observations. Here we investigate a land-terminating sector of western Greenland and (1) quantify differences between new observations and commonly used boundary condition data sets and (2) demonstrate the impact of improved boundary conditions on simulated thermodynamics in a higher-order numerical flow model. We constrain near-surface temperature with measurements from two 20mboreholes in the ablation zone and 10m firn temperature from the percolation zone. We constrain …

A Solution In Search Of A Problem: The Difficulty With State Constitutional "Right To Hunt" Amendments, Stacey Gordon Mar 2015

A Solution In Search Of A Problem: The Difficulty With State Constitutional "Right To Hunt" Amendments, Stacey Gordon

Public Land & Resources Law Review

This article explores the facets of hunting amendments. Part I traces the legal history of protections for hunting, from early laws to preserve hunting for the people to modern hunter harassment statutes. Part II analyzes the forms of hunting amendments—some guarantee a right, others only recognize a heritage; some are fundamental rights, others are less strong; some are limited by private property rights, others are absolute. Nonetheless, they have a common source. Part III considers the impacts— possibly unintended consequences—of hunting amendments. Finally, Part IV suggests that while there are unrecognized common values between hunters and animal welfare groups that …

Dendritic Distributions Of LH Channels In Experimentally-Derived Multi-Compartment Models Of Oriens-Lacunosum/Moleculare (O-Lm) Hippocampal Interneurons, Vladislav Sekulic, Tse-Chiang Chen, J. Josh Lawrence, Frances K. Skinner Feb 2015

Dendritic Distributions Of LH Channels In Experimentally-Derived Multi-Compartment Models Of Oriens-Lacunosum/Moleculare (O-Lm) Hippocampal Interneurons, Vladislav Sekulic, Tse-Chiang Chen, J. Josh Lawrence, Frances K. Skinner

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The O-LM cell type mediates feedback inhibition onto hippocampal pyramidal cells and gates information flow in the CA1. Its functions depend on the presence of voltage-gated channels (VGCs), which affect its integrative properties and response to synaptic input. Given the challenges associated with determining densities and distributions of VGCs on interneuron dendrites, we take advantage of computational modeling to consider different possibilities. In this work, we focus on hyperpolarization-activated channels (h-channels) in O-LM cells. While h-channels are known to be present in O-LM cells, it is unknown whether they are present on their dendrites. In previous work, we used ensemble …

Identification And Quantification Of Gaseous Organic Compounds Emitted From Biomass Burning Using Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography–Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, L. E. Hatch, W. Luo, J. F. Pankow, Robert Yokelson, C. Stockwell, K. C. Barsanti Feb 2015

Identification And Quantification Of Gaseous Organic Compounds Emitted From Biomass Burning Using Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography–Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, L. E. Hatch, W. Luo, J. F. Pankow, Robert Yokelson, C. Stockwell, K. C. Barsanti

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The current understanding of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation within biomass burning (BB) plumes is limited by the incomplete identification and quantification of the non-methane organic compounds (NMOCs) emitted from such fires. Gaseous organic compounds were collected on sorbent cartridges during laboratory burns as part of the fourth Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment (FLAME-4) and analyzed by two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC-ToFMS). The sensitivity and resolving power of GC x GC-ToFMS allowed the acquisition of the most extensive data set of BB NMOCs to date, with measurements from 708 positively or tentatively identified compounds. Estimated emission factors …

Characterization Of Biomass Burning Emissions From Cooking Fires, Peat, Crop Residue, And Other Fuels With High-Resolution Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, C. Stockwell, P. Veres, J. Williams

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We deployed a high-resolution proton-transferreaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) to measure biomass-burning emissions from peat, crop residue, cooking fires, and many other fire types during the fourth Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment (FLAME-4) laboratory campaign. A combination of gas standard calibrations and composition sensitive, mass-dependent calibration curves was applied to quantify gas-phase non-methane organic compounds (NMOCs) observed in the complex mixture of fire emissions. We used several approaches to assign the best identities to most major “exact masses”, including many high molecular mass species. Using these methods, approximately 80–96% of the total NMOC mass detected by the PTR-TOFMS and Fourier …

Open biomass burning is a significant source of primary air pollutants such as particulate matter and non-methane organic gases. However, the physical and chemical atmospheric processing of these emissions during transport is poorly understood. Atmospheric 5 transformations of biomass burning emissions have been investigated in environmental chambers, but there have been limited opportunities to investigate these transformations in the atmosphere. In this study, we deployed a suite of real-time instrumentation on a Twin Otter aircraft to sample smoke from prescribed fires in South Carolina, conducting measurements at both the source and downwind to character10 ize smoke evolution with atmospheric aging. …
