Biomass burning is a large source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and many other trace species to the atmosphere, which can act as precursors to secondary pollutants such as ozone and fine particles. Measurements performed with a proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer during the FIREX 2016 laboratory intensive were analyzed with positive matrix factorization (PMF), in order to understand the instantaneous variability in VOC emissions from biomass burning, and to simplify the description of these types of emissions. Despite the complexity and variability of emissions, we found that a solution including just two emission profiles, which are mass spectral representations of …

Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez Jul 2018

Teaching Calculus With Infinitesimals: New Perspectives, Luz Marina Hernandez, Jorge M. Lopez Fernandez

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The present research corroborates K. Sullivan's initial results as stated in her epoch making study about the effectiveness of teaching elementary calculus using Robinson's non standard approach. Our research added to her results related to the teaching of the elementary integral, with similar positive results. In this essay we propose a definition of the notion of cognitive advantage mentioned by Sullivan in expressing the dramatic differences in understanding of students of non standard calculus as opposed to those of its standard counterpart. Our proposal is based on ideas of Kitcher and Kuhn and allows us to better understand the didactics …

Justifying Euler's Formula Through Motion In A Plane, Marek Svetlik, Marija Radojicic, Slavisa Radovic, Ksenija Simic-Muller Jul 2018

Justifying Euler's Formula Through Motion In A Plane, Marek Svetlik, Marija Radojicic, Slavisa Radovic, Ksenija Simic-Muller

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper we consider motion of an object in a plane to provide a mechanical interpretation of Euler's formula. We believe that this approach contributes to a deeper and more intuitive understanding of Euler's formula and can especially be useful for students learning it and encountering complex numbers for the first time. Euler's formula can be introduced in many ways and using various approaches, but not all of these approaches help develop an intuition for where it comes from and why it works. We believe that the emphasis on physical interpretations and connections to motion can contribute to a …

Dividing An Apple Into Equal Parts – An Easy Job?, Hans Humenberger Jul 2018

Dividing An Apple Into Equal Parts – An Easy Job?, Hans Humenberger

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Theoretically seen dividing an apple (melon, potato, etc.) equally is not an easy task. For instance, with a normal knife (straight cuts) one has to hit the center so that the cut is a great circle. But there are alternatives which have strong connections to the “pizza theorem” and Cavalieri’s Principle. The established theorem could be called “apple theorem”.

Generating K-Pell Infinite Series Using Whittaker’S Formula, Raul Prisacariu Jul 2018

Generating K-Pell Infinite Series Using Whittaker’S Formula, Raul Prisacariu

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, we apply Whittaker’s formula on 2nd degree polynomial equations of the form: x2 + 2x – (k−1), where k≥2 and k∈𝑁. By applying Whittaker’s formula on these polynomial equations, we obtain infinite series for √𝑘 that involve integers belonging to specific k-Pell sequences. More specifically, the infinite series of √𝑘 will be made of terms containing the successive integers belonging to the k-Pell sequence {𝑃𝑘−1,𝑛}𝑛.

Visualizing Complex Roots, William Bauldry, Michael J. Bosse, Steven Otey Jul 2018

Visualizing Complex Roots, William Bauldry, Michael J. Bosse, Steven Otey

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Avoiding complex geometric and analytic constructions, this paper considers techniques for visualizing the location of complex roots of quadratic, cubic, and quartic real polynomial functions. This provides teachers and students of mathematics with a better understanding of the nature of these functions and their respective real and complex roots.

Two Notions Of ‘Linear Function’ In Lower Secondary School And Missed Opportunities For Students’ First Meeting With Functions, Dyana Wijayanti Jul 2018

Two Notions Of ‘Linear Function’ In Lower Secondary School And Missed Opportunities For Students’ First Meeting With Functions, Dyana Wijayanti

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The notion of function is considered one of the most difficult parts of the common lower secondary curriculum. In this paper we discuss the potential role played by linear functions, invariably used as first examples of this new notion. As empirical basis we use a praxeological analysis of the function chapter in four Indonesian lower secondary textbooks. The main point of our analysis is that the class of functions of type 𝑓(𝑥)=𝑎𝑥 (where a is some given number) does not appear explicitly at the level of theory, neither in the sense of being given a name, or in the sense …

Understanding Teacher Noticing Of Students’ Prior Knowledge: Challenges And Possibilities, Gloriana Gonzalez Jul 2018

Understanding Teacher Noticing Of Students’ Prior Knowledge: Challenges And Possibilities, Gloriana Gonzalez

The Mathematics Enthusiast

I propose a new construct, teacher noticing of students’ prior knowledge, and provide examples of a professional development intervention with the goal of supporting teacher learning. The examples demonstrate that combining discussions of animations of classroom instruction, video clubs, and lesson study can help teachers to attend to students’ prior knowledge and anticipate actions that use that knowledge for promoting mathematical understanding. I discuss challenges and new questions for mathematics education researchers brought about by the new construct. I suggest that the construct is valuable for developing teachers’ professional knowledge.

Functional Reasoning And Working With Functions: Functions/Mappings In Mathematics Teaching Tradition In Hungary And Germany, Gabriella Ambrus, Andreas Filler, Odon Vancso Jul 2018

Functional Reasoning And Working With Functions: Functions/Mappings In Mathematics Teaching Tradition In Hungary And Germany, Gabriella Ambrus, Andreas Filler, Odon Vancso

The Mathematics Enthusiast

After a short survey of the genesis of the ideas behind “functional reasoning” in mathematics education at the beginning of the 20th century, the development and implementation of these ideas in both parts of Germany and in Hungary in the second half of the 20th century are discussed and compared. The ideas of Felix Klein had a strong influence in both countries. However, from the 1950’s to the 1970’s (the period of “New Math”) an attempt was made to teach functions and mappings in a more abstract sense, involving both elementary (real-valued) functions and geometric transformations. In the 1970’s and …

Locating Complex Roots Of Quintic Polynomials, Michael J. Bosse, William Bauldry, Steven Otey Jul 2018

Locating Complex Roots Of Quintic Polynomials, Michael J. Bosse, William Bauldry, Steven Otey

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Since there are no general solutions to polynomials of degree higher than four, high school and college students only infrequently investigate quintic polynomials. Additionally, although students commonly investigate real roots of polynomials, only infrequently are complex roots – and, more particularly, the location of complex roots – investigated. This paper considers features of graphs of quintic polynomials and uses analytic constructions to locate the functions’ complex roots. Throughout, hyperlinked dynamic applets are provided for the student reader to experientially participate in the paper. This paper is an extension to other investigations regarding locating complex roots (Bauldry, Bossé, & Otey, 2017).

Learning To Write Calculus Solutions: An Experiment In Latex, Brent Pohlmann

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We explore the use of LATEX to typeset solutions to calculus problems. We hypothesize that solving one problem completely, and presenting that solution properly, helps to strengthen students' overall problem solving and mathematical abilities. Several specific examples are given to demonstrate how these changes occurred within in an individual Calculus III course.

Nine Lines Are Needed To Avoid Any Three General Points, Roy Mikael Skjelnes

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We construct nine lines in the plane over the integers having the property that for any three general points in the plane over any field, at last one of the constructed lines avoids the three points. We then show that nine lines is the fewest number possible having this property.

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup Jul 2018

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this article, we explore affordances of adopting the framework of praxeology by Chevallard in the analysis of mathematics classroom communication in relation to the communication in a textbook. While adopting praxeology, we carried out detailed analysis of communication in both classroom data and textbooks. The construed praxeologies describe the organisation of knowledge expressed for the same type of task in both classroom and textbook. The praxeologies were compared, with specific attention to the teacher’s practice. This analysis illuminates how teachers’ practices, realised in classroom communication, may be compared to other texts describing the same topics, with a focus on …

Drawing Off The Page: How New 3d Technologies Provide Insight Into Cognitive And Pedagogical Assumptions About Mathematics, Oi-Lam Ng, Nathalie Sinclair, Brent Davis

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Mathematics has a history of being a two-dimensional inscribing practice. We describe the potential evolution in doing, thinking, and learning mathematics with the emergence of a technological innovation that enables real-time 3D virtual and material interactions. Using the 3D drawing pen as a simple and recently available technology, we highlight how it helps re-think long-standing assumptions and dichotomies in mathematics education including, for example, the material distinction between diagram and manipulative, the semiotic distinction between icon and index, and the developmental progression of action-icon-symbol. We then speculate on the future possibilities of the shift in technological infrastructure that 3D pens …

The chemical composition of aerosol particles is a key aspect in determining their impact on the environment. For example, nitrogen-containing particles impact atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and ecological N deposition. Instruments that measure total reactive nitrogen (Nr Combining double low line all nitrogen compounds except for N2 and N2O) focus on gas-phase nitrogen and very few studies directly discuss the instrument capacity to measure the mass of Nr-containing particles. Here, we investigate the mass quantification of particle-bound nitrogen using a custom Nr system that involves total conversion to nitric oxide (NO) across platinum and molybdenum catalysts followed by NOĝ'O3 chemiluminescence …

Science, Advocacy, Policy, Planning: Tools For Advancing Transportation Equity, Garrett S. Mcallister May 2018

Science, Advocacy, Policy, Planning: Tools For Advancing Transportation Equity, Garrett S. Mcallister

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

The theme of this portfolio is how different tools and approaches can be used for advancing transportation equity. Broadly defined, transportation equity is about fairness in transportation. There are a number of ways this fairness can be assessed. The most common way to assess transportation equity is by looking at the fairness of outcomes, distributed geographically, socially, or even by mode of transportation. Equity can also be defined by the fairness of processes. The first half of the portfolio illustrates some of the problems with the current transportation system and how it is unhealthy (Piece 1) and unjust (Piece 2). …

The Combinatorics Of The Clarinet, Cory M. Emlen Apr 2018

The Combinatorics Of The Clarinet, Cory M. Emlen

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The relationship between the individual key presses on the clarinet and the resulting frequency was studied in order to determine if it was possible to make a model to describe the resulting note by counting the keys that were pressed. Data was collected by making a recording to determine the multiplicative effect on the frequency, with a different recording being made for each key. The collection process went as follows: First, metadata was recorded in the form of verbal statement of the key number and any subsequent comments. A simple fingering was then played, followed by the pressing of the …

Music Through Math: Analyzing And Composing Scores Mathematically, Katerina N. Hall Apr 2018

Music Through Math: Analyzing And Composing Scores Mathematically, Katerina N. Hall

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Math and music have always been closely tied in the minds of great thinkers. From Pythagoras’ perfect ratios to the sinusoidal waves of various pitches, we can analyze and create music by utilizing the tools of mathematics. One such tool lies in modular arithmetic. By using a modulo twelve system, we can encompass all of the notes in a modern twelve-tone octave. Thus, we can translate notes to numbers and further, groups these number-notes into sets. Such sets describe musical patterns like chords, harmonies, and motifs, which when combined create entire compositions. While we can analyze all music in this …

Building Prime Towers To Understand Prime Number, Alexis J. Feffer

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

There has been a fair amount of research over the past several decades on teachers’ understanding of the multiplicative structure of integers. What can easily be discerned from the literature is a lack of understanding on the part of these educational professionals. It would be easy to assume that this lack of understanding is thereby held by the students in these classrooms. Yet, very little research has examined children's understanding of this mathematical idea. In this quasi-experimental study, we focus the effects of the use of a manipulative, the prime towers, in a three-day teaching experiment carried out in a …
