Blocking A Specific Ion Channel Reduces Inflammation In Lung Cells, Becky Kendall Feb 2021

Blocking A Specific Ion Channel Reduces Inflammation In Lung Cells, Becky Kendall

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Silicosis caused by exposure to silica dust is a serious occupational health threat in the United States and worldwide. For example, artificial stone workers are exposed to dust that has a higher percentage of silica than natural stone, creating a more significant exposure in a shorter period of time and placing these workers at an enhanced risk of developing silicosis. Silicosis is an incurable lung disease marked by chronic inflammation. When silica dust is inhaled, the cells responsible for clearing it out of the lungs, macrophages, become damaged and initiate a cycle of chronic inflammation that results in lung and …

Should We Use Climate Analogs To Predict Climate Impacts? A Contemporary Validation., Svetlana Yegorova, Solomon Z. Dobrowski, Sean A. Parks

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

There is a need for location-specific, fine-grain, climate impact information to inform regional and local-level climate adaptation. However, such climate information is hard to obtain from the existing models either due to the lack of sufficient data or too coarse of a model output to be useful. Analog impact models (AIMs), provide an alternative approach. AIMs rely on climate analogs (locations in space and time that have similar climate) to forecast future climate impacts at a spatial grain as fine as a four kilometer pixel. Analog impact models assume that locations with equivalent climate (climate analogs) also share other important …

Cough Desensitization Treatment: Updates from a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Chronic cough is estimated to impact approximately 11% of Americans1 and is one of the leading reasons that patients seek medical evaluation2. For approximately 20% of patients, the typical treatments for medical causes of chronic cough fail and they are said to have refractory chronic cough (RCC)3. RCC has negative implications on a patient’s health-related quality of life4. Cough Desensitization Treatment (CDT) is a novel intervention for RCC that combines behavioral cough suppression therapy with systematic desensitization of the cough reflex using controlled …

A Hand-Held, Photogrammetric, Approach To Riparian And Stream Assessment And Monitoring, Joseph Dehnert Feb 2021

A Hand-Held, Photogrammetric, Approach To Riparian And Stream Assessment And Monitoring, Joseph Dehnert

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Over 37,000 riparian restoration projects have been reported in the United States since 1980, but only 38% of those projects are currently being monitored; 70% of those being monitored reported that the restoration actions were not accomplishing their intended purposes. Because riparian zones serve as the connection between terrestrial and flowing freshwater ecosystems, it is important to identify and quantify their structural and functional roles in natural systems and monitor the restoration efforts being implemented. A rigorous understanding of the connection between riparian, geomorphic, and hydraulic processes provides a sound ecological foundation when identifying riparian management objectives and evaluating current, …

Chapter 1.3: 3-D Topo Surface Visualization Of Acid-Base Species Distributions: Corner Buttes, Corner Pits, Curving Ridge Crests And Dilution Plains, Garon C. Smith, Md Mainul Hossain

Water Topos: A 3-D Trend Surface Approach to Viewing and Teaching Aqueous Equilibrium Chemistry

This chapter adds 3-D species distribution topos to earlier surfaces that showed pH (Chapter 1.1) and buffer capacity behavior (Chapter 1.2) during titration and dilution procedures. It constructs trend surfaces by plotting computed alpha distribution coefficients above a composition grid with “mL of NaOH” as the x-axis and overall system dilution (log C) as the y-axis. The systematic shift from protonated to deprotonated forms is clearly visualized on a linear z-axis. Because pH and buffer capacity surfaces accompany the species topos, it is easy to see their interrelationships. On the basis of their graphical appearance, features …

When Is Freshman's Dream Actually True?, Michael P. Abramson Jan 2021

When Is Freshman's Dream Actually True?, Michael P. Abramson

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We address the problem of determining what points in a field satisfy Freshman's Dream, or equivalently, when a monomial behaves additively. It is conjectured that the only additive points over the rational numbers are trivial. In the case of finite fields, we generalize well-known results about uni-variate polynomials to bivariate homogeneous polynomials in order to count the number of additive points.

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten Jan 2021

Secondary School Mathematics Students Exploring The Connectedness Of Mathematics: The Case Of The Parabola And Its Tangent In A Dynamic Geometry Environment, Margo Kondratieva, Christer Bergsten

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Drawing on the Semiotic-cultural approach and the Anthropological theory of the didactic, this paper discusses how exploration of historically framed conceptualizations of mathematical objects can establish bridges between different mathematical areas such as calculus and Euclidean geometry. A classroom intervention study in two secondary mathematics class-rooms involving dynamic geometry software tools to support the construction of a parabola and its tangent and aiming at the development of representational flexibility between algebraic/ functional and geometrical approaches, illustrates how students may benefit from participation in such explorations.

A Formal Justification Of The Ancient Chinese Method Of Computing Square Roots, Edilberto Najera, Leslie Cristina Najera-Benitez Jan 2021

A Formal Justification Of The Ancient Chinese Method Of Computing Square Roots, Edilberto Najera, Leslie Cristina Najera-Benitez

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper a formal justification of the ancient Chinese method for computing square roots is given. As a result, some already known properties of the square root which is computed with this method are deduced. If any other number base is used, the justification given shows that the method is applied in the same way and that the deduced properties are still being fulfilled, facts that highlight the importance of positional number systems. It also shows how to generalize the method to compute high orders roots. Although with this elementary method you can compute the square root of any …

Squaring The Circle And Doubling The Cube In Space-Time, Espen Gaarder Haug Jan 2021

Squaring The Circle And Doubling The Cube In Space-Time, Espen Gaarder Haug

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Squaring the Circle is a famous geometry problem going all the way back to the ancient Greeks. It is the great quest of constructing a square with the same area as a circle using a compass and straightedge in a finite number of steps. Since it was proven that ⇡ was a transcendental number in 1882, the task of Squaring the Circle has been considered impossible. Here, we will show it is possible to Square the Circle in space-time. It is not possible to Square the Circle in Euclidean space alone, but it is fully possible in space-time, and after …

Indigenous Culture-Based School Mathematics In Action: Part I: Professional Development For Creating Teaching Materials, Sharon Meyer, Glen Aikenhead

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This first of a pair of articles describes a professional development project that prepared four non-Indigenous mathematics teachers (Grades 5-12) to implement Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC, 2016) notion of reconciliation: cross-cultural respect through mutual understanding. The researchers collaboratively mentored the teachers to enhance their mathematics teaching with Indigenous mathematizing3. The teachers’ focus was on developing and revising lesson plans for other teachers to teach. This process explicitly and implicitly revealed precise supports that need to be in place for a teacher to succeed at innovating with this Indigenous culture-based school mathematics (ICBSM). Part I is a template for …

The Suuji Approach To Multi-Digit Addition: Using Length To Deepen Students’ Understanding Of The Base 10 Number System, Ryota Matsuura, Olaf Hall-Holt, Nancy Dennis, Michelle Martin, Sarah Sword Jan 2021

The Suuji Approach To Multi-Digit Addition: Using Length To Deepen Students’ Understanding Of The Base 10 Number System, Ryota Matsuura, Olaf Hall-Holt, Nancy Dennis, Michelle Martin, Sarah Sword

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We describe the Suuji representation of numbers which aims to deepen elementary students’ understanding of the base 10 system. (“Suuji” means “number” in Japanese.) This representation takes a two pronged approach of (1) making the place value more explicit and (2) using length to represent numbers, thus allowing students to reason spatially. We taught multi-digit addition using the Suuji representation to 20 second and third grade students. The article uses lesson descriptions and student work to illustrate the Suuji approach, as well as its impact on student learning.

Using Records Of Practice To Bridge From Teachers’ Mathematical Problem Solving To Classroom Practice, Davida D. Fischman, Iris M. Riggs Jan 2021

Using Records Of Practice To Bridge From Teachers’ Mathematical Problem Solving To Classroom Practice, Davida D. Fischman, Iris M. Riggs

The Mathematics Enthusiast

It is often the case that high quality mathematics education professional development involves enhancing both teachers’ content knowledge and their pedagogical skills, specifically for teaching mathematics. However, when teachers are immersed in their own learning of mathematics, they are often unaware of the facilitators’ instructional decisions and moves that influence their own learning outcomes, as well as how these might apply to their future teaching. Thus, while the teachers can appreciate their new understanding of content, they may not have added significantly to their understanding of the instructor’s pedagogical moves that facilitated their growth. As a result, teachers may leave …

Dancesport And Power Values, Diana Cheng, Peter Coughlin Jan 2021

Dancesport And Power Values, Diana Cheng, Peter Coughlin

The Mathematics Enthusiast

DanceSport is a competitive form of ballroom dancing. At a DanceSport event, couples perform multiple dances in front of judges. This paper shows how a goal for a couple and the judges' evaluations of the couple's dance performances can be used to formulate a weighted simple game. We explain why couples and their coaches may consider a variety of goals. We also show how prominent power values can be used to measure the contributions of dance performances to achieving certain goals. As part of our analysis, we develop novel visual representations of the Banzhaf and Shapley-Shubik index profiles for different …

Flattening The Curve, Peter Zizler, Mandana Sobhanzadeh Jan 2021

Flattening The Curve, Peter Zizler, Mandana Sobhanzadeh

The Mathematics Enthusiast

We quantify flattening the curve under the assumption of a soft quarantine in the spread of a contagious viral disease in a society. In particular, the maximum daily infection rate is expected to drop by twice the percentage drop in the virus reproduction number. The same percentage drop is expected for the maximum daily hospitalization or fatality rate. A formula for the expected maximum daily fatality rate is given.

The Works Of Omar Khayyam In The History Of Mathematics, Thomas Bisom Jan 2021

The Works Of Omar Khayyam In The History Of Mathematics, Thomas Bisom

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The exact time when the mathematician Omar Khayyam lived is not well-defined, but it is generally agreed upon that he lived from the end of the 11th century to the beginning of the 12th century C.E. in Nishapur, which is in modern-day Iran and Afghanistan (Struik, 1958). Other than mathematics, Omar Khayyam also made considerable contributions to other fields, such as astronomy, philosophy, and poetry (Struik, 1958). He is probably most famous for his poem titled Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which was translated by Edward Fitzgerald (Struik, 1958). Although famous for his poetry, he was professionally inclined to astronomy and …

Polya: A Tool For Adjudicating Competing Annotations Of Biological Sequences, Kaitlin Carey Jan 2021

Polya: A Tool For Adjudicating Competing Annotations Of Biological Sequences, Kaitlin Carey

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Annotation of a biological sequence is usually performed by aligning that sequence to a database of known sequence elements. When that database contains elements that are highly similar to each other, the proper annotation may be ambiguous, because several entries in the database produce high-scoring alignments. Typical annotation methods work by assigning a label based on the candidate annotation with the highest alignment score; this can overstate annotation certainty, mislabel boundaries, and fails to identify large scale rearrangements or insertions within the annotated sequence. Here, I present a new software tool, PolyA, that adjudicates between competing alignment-based annotations by computing …

Soda: An Open-Source Library For Visualizing Biological Sequence Annotation, Jack W. Roddy, Travis J. Wheeler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Genome annotation is the process of identifying and labeling known genetic sequences or features within a genome. Across the various subfields within modern molecular biology, there is a common need for the visualization of such annotations. Genomic data is often visualized on web browser platforms, providing users with easy access to visualization tools without the need for installing any software or, in many cases, underlying datasets. While there exists a broad range of web-based visualization tools, there is, to my knowledge, no lightweight, modern library tailored towards the visualization of genomic data. Instead, developers charged with the task of producing …
